We present TraDE, a self-attention-based architecture for auto-regressive density estimation with continuous and discrete valued data. Our model is trained using a penalized maximum likelihood objective, which ensures that samples from the density estimate resemble the training data distribution. The use of self-attention means that the model need not retain conditional sufficient statistics during the auto-regressive process beyond what is needed for each covariate. On standard tabular and image data benchmarks, TraDE produces significantly better density estimates than existing approaches such as normalizing flow estimators and recurrent auto-regressive models. However log-likelihood on held-out data only partially reflects how useful these estimates are in real-world applications. In order to systematically evaluate density estimators, we present a suite of tasks such as regression using generated samples, out-of-distribution detection, and robustness to noise in the training data and demonstrate that TraDE works well in these scenarios.

Accurately estimating uncertainties in neural network predictions is of great importance in building trusted DNNs-based models, and there is an increasing interest in providing accurate uncertainty estimation on many tasks, such as security cameras and autonomous driving vehicles. In this paper, we focus on the two main use cases of uncertainty estimation, i.e. selective prediction and confidence calibration. We first reveal potential issues of commonly used quality metrics for uncertainty estimation in both use cases, and propose our new metrics to mitigate them. We then apply these new metri…

Vision transformer architectures have been demonstrated to work very effectively for image classification tasks. Efforts to solve more challenging vision tasks with transformers rely on convolutional backbones for feature extraction. In this paper we investigate the use of a pure transformer architecture (i.e., one with no CNN backbone) for the problem of 2D body pose estimation. We evaluate two ViT architectures on the COCO dataset. We demonstrate that using an encoder-decoder transformer architecture yields state of the art results on this estimation problem.

Accuracy and Diversity are two essential metrizable manifestations in generating natural and semantically correct captions. Many efforts have been made to enhance one of them with another decayed due to the trade-off gap. In this work, we will show that the inferior standard of accuracy draws from human annotations (leave-one-out) are not appropriate for machine-generated captions. To improve diversity with a solid accuracy performance, we exploited a novel Variational Transformer framework. By introducing the "Invisible Information Prior" and the "Auto-selectable GMM", we instruct the encoder…

Kalman Filter requires the true parameters of the model and solves optimal state estimation recursively. Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm is applicable for estimating the parameters of the model that are not available before Kalman filtering, which is EM-KF algorithm. To improve the preciseness of EM-KF algorithm, the author presents a state estimation method by combining the Long-Short Term Memory network (LSTM), Transformer and EM-KF algorithm in the framework of Encoder-Decoder in Sequence to Sequence (seq2seq). Simulation on a linear mobile robot model demonstrates that the new meth…
We consider a linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) estimation framework with model mismatch where the assumed model order is smaller than that of the underlying linear system which generates the data used in the estimation process. By modelling the regressors of the underlying system as random variables, we analyze the average behaviour of the mean squared error (MSE). Our results quantify how the MSE depends on the interplay between the number of samples and the number of parameters in the underlying system and in the assumed model. In particular, if the number of samples is not sufficie…

The problem of travel time estimation is widely considered as the fundamental challenge of modern logistics. The complex nature of interconnections between spatial aspects of roads and temporal dynamics of ground transport still preserves an area to experiment with. However, the total volume of currently accumulated data encourages the construction of the learning models which have the perspective to significantly outperform earlier solutions. In order to address the problems of travel time estimation, we propose a new method based on transformer architecture - TransTTE.
One of the problems with automated audio captioning (AAC) is the indeterminacy in word selection corresponding to the audio event/scene. Since one acoustic event/scene can be described with several words, it results in a combinatorial explosion of possible captions and difficulty in training. To solve this problem, we propose a Transformer-based audio-captioning model with keyword estimation called TRACKE. It simultaneously solves the word-selection indeterminacy problem with the main task of AAC while executing the sub-task of acoustic event detection/acoustic scene classification (i.e., keyw…
Transformer and its variants have shown state-of-the-art results in many vision tasks recently, ranging from image classification to dense prediction. Despite of their success, limited work has been reported on improving the model efficiency for deployment in latency-critical applications, such as autonomous driving and robotic navigation. In this paper, we aim at improving upon the existing transformers in vision, and propose a method for self-supervised monocular Depth Estimation with Simplified Transformer (DEST), which is efficient and particularly suitable for deployment on GPU-based plat…
Transformer has become ubiquitous due to its dominant performance in various NLP and image processing tasks. However, it lacks understanding of how to generate mathematically grounded uncertainty estimates for transformer architectures. Models equipped with such uncertainty estimates can typically improve predictive performance, make networks robust, avoid over-fitting and used as acquisition function in active learning. In this paper, we introduce BayesFormer, a Transformer model with dropouts designed by Bayesian theory. We proposed a new theoretical framework to extend the approximate varia…

Treatment effect estimation, which refers to the estimation of causal effects and aims to measure the strength of the causal relationship, is of great importance in many fields but is a challenging problem in practice. As present, data-driven causal effect estimation faces two main challenges, i.e., selection bias and the missing of counterfactual. To address these two issues, most of the existing approaches tend to reduce the selection bias by learning a balanced representation, and then to estimate the counterfactual through the representation. However, they heavily rely on the finely hand-c…
We propose a Transformer-based framework for 3D human texture estimation from a single image. The proposed Transformer is able to effectively exploit the global information of the input image, overcoming the limitations of existing methods that are solely based on convolutional neural networks. In addition, we also propose a mask-fusion strategy to combine the advantages of the RGB-based and texture-flow-based models. We further introduce a part-style loss to help reconstruct high-fidelity colors without introducing unpleasant artifacts. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of t…

The estimation of speaker characteristics such as age and height is a challenging task, having numerous applications in voice forensic analysis. In this work, we propose a bi-encoder transformer mixture model for speaker age and height estimation. Considering the wide differences in male and female voice characteristics such as differences in formant and fundamental frequencies, we propose the use of two separate transformer encoders for the extraction of specific voice features in the male and female gender, using wav2vec 2.0 as a common-level feature extractor. This architecture reduces the …
Learning based 6D object pose estimation methods rely on computing large intermediate pose representations and/or iteratively refining an initial estimation with a slow render-compare pipeline. This paper introduces a novel method we call Cascaded Pose Refinement Transformers, or CRT-6D. We replace the commonly used dense intermediate representation with a sparse set of features sampled from the feature pyramid we call OSKFs(Object Surface Keypoint Features) where each element corresponds to an object keypoint. We employ lightweight deformable transformers and chain them together to iterativel…

The task of 2D human pose estimation is challenging as the number of keypoints is typically large (~ 17) and this necessitates the use of robust neural network architectures and training pipelines that can capture the relevant features from the input image. These features are then aggregated to make accurate heatmap predictions from which the final keypoints of human body parts can be inferred. Many papers in literature use CNN-based architectures for the backbone, and/or combine it with a transformer, after which the features are aggregated to make the final keypoint predictions [1]. In this …

Recent years have seen big advances in the field of sentence-level quality estimation (QE), largely as a result of using neural-based architectures. However, the majority of these methods work only on the language pair they are trained on and need retraining for new language pairs. This process can prove difficult from a technical point of view and is usually computationally expensive. In this paper we propose a simple QE framework based on cross-lingual transformers, and we use it to implement and evaluate two different neural architectures. Our evaluation shows that the proposed methods achi…
Monocular depth estimation plays a critical role in various computer vision and robotics applications such as localization, mapping, and 3D object detection. Recently, learning-based algorithms achieve huge success in depth estimation by training models with a large amount of data in a supervised manner. However, it is challenging to acquire dense ground truth depth labels for supervised training, and the unsupervised depth estimation using monocular sequences emerges as a promising alternative. Unfortunately, most studies on unsupervised depth estimation explore loss functions or occlusion ma…

We consider the reconstruction of a phylogeny from multiple genes under the multispecies coalescent. We establish a connection with the sparse signal detection problem, where one seeks to distinguish between a distribution and a mixture of the distribution and a sparse signal. Using this connection, we derive an information-theoretic trade-off between the number of genes, $m$, needed for an accurate reconstruction and the sequence length, $k$, of the genes. Specifically, we show that to detect a branch of length $f$, one needs $m = Θ(1/[f^{2} \sqrt{k}])$.

Most studies on word-level Quality Estimation (QE) of machine translation focus on language-specific models. The obvious disadvantages of these approaches are the need for labelled data for each language pair and the high cost required to maintain several language-specific models. To overcome these problems, we explore different approaches to multilingual, word-level QE. We show that these QE models perform on par with the current language-specific models. In the cases of zero-shot and few-shot QE, we demonstrate that it is possible to accurately predict word-level quality for any given new la…

Egocentric 3D human pose estimation (HPE) from images is challenging due to severe self-occlusions and strong distortion introduced by the fish-eye view from the head mounted camera. Although existing works use intermediate heatmap-based representations to counter distortion with some success, addressing self-occlusion remains an open problem. In this work, we leverage information from past frames to guide our self-attention-based 3D HPE estimation procedure -- Ego-STAN. Specifically, we build a spatio-temporal Transformer model that attends to semantically rich convolutional neural network-ba…

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a widely used method for studying brain white matter development and degeneration. However, standard DTI estimation methods depend on a large number of high-quality measurements. This would require long scan times and can be particularly difficult to achieve with certain patient populations such as neonates. Here, we propose a method that can accurately estimate the diffusion tensor from only six diffusion-weighted measurements. Our method achieves this by learning to exploit the relationships between the diffusion signals and tensors in neighboring voxels. Ou…
