We introduce and demonstrate a scheme for eliminating the inhomogeneous dephasing of a collective quantum state. The scheme employs off-resonant fields that continuously dress the collective state with an auxiliary sensor state, which has an enhanced and opposite sensitivity to the same source of inhomogeneity. We derive the optimal conditions under which the dressed state is fully protected from dephasing, when using either one or two dressing fields. The latter provides better protection, circumvents qubit phase rotation, and suppresses the sensitivity to drive noise. We further derive expressions for all residual, higher-order, sensitivities. We experimentally study the scheme by protecting a collective excitation of an atomic ensemble, where inhomogeneous dephasing originates from thermal motion. Using photon storage and retrieval, we demonstrate complete suppression of inhomogeneous dephasing and consequently a prolonged memory time. Our scheme may be applied to eliminate motional dephasing in other systems, improving the performance of quantum gates and memories with neutral atoms. It is also generally applicable to various gas, solid, and engineered systems, where sensitivity to variations in time, space, or other domains limits possible scale-up of the system.
Although the Gaussian-noise assumption is widely adopted in the study of qubit decoherence, non-Gaussian noise sources, especially the strong discrete fluctuators, have been detected in many qubits. It remains an important task to further understand and mitigate the distinctive decoherence effect of the non-Gaussian noise. Here, we study the qubit dephasing caused by the non-Gaussian fluctuators, and predict a symmetry-breaking effect that is unique to the non-Gaussian noise. This broken symmetry results in an experimentally measurable mismatch between the extremum points of the dephasing rate…
We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the adiabatic evolution of degenerate open quantum systems, where the dynamics is induced by time-dependent fluctuating loop paths in control parameter space. For weak system-bath coupling, the fluctuations around a deterministic base path obey Gaussian statistics, where we assume that the quantum adiabatic theorem is also satisfied for fluctuating paths. We show that universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contributions are contained in the fluctuation-averaged evolution operator. This operator plays a key role in all experimental protoco…
Long-lived storage of arbitrary transverse multimodes is important for establishing a high-channel-capacity quantum network. Most of the pioneering works focused on atomic diffusion as the dominant impact on the retrieved pattern in an atom-based memory. In this work, we demonstrate that the unsynchronized Larmor precession of atoms in the inhomogeneous magnetic field dominates the distortion of the pattern stored in a cold-atom-based memory. We find that this distortion effect can be eliminated by applying a strong uniform polarization magnetic field. By preparing atoms in magnetically insens…
In order to achieve the high-fidelity quantum control needed for a broad range of quantum information technologies, reducing the effects of noise and system inhomogeneities is an essential task. It is well known that a system can be decoupled from noise or made insensitive to inhomogeneous dephasing dynamically by using carefully designed pulse sequences based on square or delta-function waveforms such as Hahn spin echo or CPMG. However, such ideal pulses are often challenging to implement experimentally with high fidelity. Here, we uncover a new geometrical framework for visualizing all possi…
Transport of excitons through transfer networks is a unique example where the interplay between quantum coherence and environment-induced dephasing leads to non-trivial effects. One exciting example is the "environment-assisted quantum transport", (ENAQT), where, counter intuitively, the environment interrupts quantum transport in a way that enhances the transfer efficiency. Here we show that the interplay between dephasing and quantum coherence can lead to an additional function in exciton transport - photo-protection, that is the reduction of current upon increased excitation. We start by de…
Quantum spin dephasing is caused by inhomogeneous coupling to the environment, with resulting limits to the measurement time and precision of spin-based sensors. The effects of spin dephasing can be especially pernicious for dense ensembles of electronic spins in the solid-state, such as for nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond. We report the use of two complementary techniques, spin bath control and double quantum coherence, to enhance the inhomogeneous spin dephasing time ($T_2^*$) for NV ensembles by more than an order of magnitude. In combination, these quantum control techniques…
We show that continuous dynamical decoupling can protect a two-qubit entangled state from sudden death at finite temperature due to uncorrelated dephasing, bit flipping, and dissipation. We consider a situation where an entangled state shared between two non-interacting qubits is initially prepared and left evolve under the environmental perturbations and the protection of external fields. To illustrate the protection of the entanglement, we solve numerically a master equation in the Born approximation, considering independent boson fields at the same temperature coupled to the different error…
System consisting of a number of trapped atoms evolving under the influence of external inhomogenous magnetic field undergoes spin dephasing: classically, since each atom feels different field along its trajectory, the spin rotation rates differ; as a result the average spin decays. In a quantum mechanical context this corresponds to entanglement of spin and spatial degrees of freedom and nontrivial internal spin dynamics. The spin dephasing can be prevented by tuning the interaction between the atoms. This phenomenon, called spin self-rephasing, has been observed experimentally and can increa…
We demonstrate active control of inhomogeneous dephasing and rephasing for single collective atomic spin excitations (spin-waves) created by spontaneous Raman scattering in a quantum memory based on cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The control is provided by a reversible external magnetic field gradient inducing an inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic hyperfine levels. We demonstrate experimentally that active rephasing preserves the single photon nature of the retrieved photons. Finally, we show that the control of the inhomogeneous dephasing enables the creation of time-separated spin-waves in a sing…
We show that dissipative quantum state preparation processes can be protected against qubit dephasing by interlacing the state preparation control with dynamical decoupling (DD) control consisting of a sequence of short $π$-pulses. The inhomogeneous broadening can be suppressed to second order of the pulse interval, and the protection efficiency is nearly independent of the pulse sequence but determined by the average interval between pulses. The DD protection is numerically tested and found to be efficient against inhomogeneous dephasing on two exemplary dissipative state preparation schemes …
We have developed and characterized a symmetry-protected superconducting qubit that offers simultaneous exponential suppression of energy decay from charge and flux noise, and dephasing from flux noise. The qubit consists of a Cooper-pair box (CPB) shunted by a superinductor, thus forming a superconducting loop. Provided the offset charge on the CPB island is an odd number of electrons, the qubit potential corresponds to that of a $\cos ϕ/ 2$ Josephson element, preserving the parity of fluxons in the loop via Aharonov-Casher interference. In this regime, the logical-state wavefunctions reside …
The efficient detection of a single spin is a significant goal of improving the sensitivity of quantum magnetic-field sensors. Recent results show that a specific type of entanglement such as Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states can be used as a resource to improve the performance of single spin detection. However, scalable generation of the GHZ states is experimentally difficult to realize. It is desirable to use a practical entangled state that can be easily generated. In this paper, we propose the efficient detection of a single spin with Dicke states. We show a way to prepare and measu…
Hybrid systems consisting of different types of qubits are promising for building quantum computers if they combine useful properties of their constituent qubits. However, they also pose additional challenges if one type of qubits is more susceptible to environmental noise than the others. Dynamical decoupling can help to protect such systems by reducing the decoherence due to the environmental noise, but the protection must be designed such that it does not interfere with the control fields driving the logical operations. Here, we test such a protection scheme on a quantum register consisting…
We consider protecting a Hadamard operation from independent dephasing, bit flipping, and dissipation. These environment-induced errors are represented by three uncorrelated reservoirs of thermalized bosons and we show that the protection is achievable through continuous dynamical decoupling. We find that, to decouple the Hadamard evolution from the environmental influence, we need a control field of higher frequency if the boson spectral density is super-ohmic than if it is ohmic. We also study the relevance of bit flipping and dissipation to the gate fidelity when it is protected from dephas…
We analyze the disorder-perturbed transport of quantum states in the absence of backscattering. This comprises, for instance, the propagation of edge-mode wave packets in topological insulators, or the propagation of photons in inhomogeneous media. We quantify the disorder-induced dephasing, which we show to be bound. Moreover, we identify a gap condition to remain in the backscattering-free regime despite disorder-induced momentum broadening. Our analysis comprises the full disorder-averaged quantum state, on the level of both populations and coherences, appreciating states as potential carri…
We demonstrate that reversible dephasing via inhomogeneous broadening can greatly reduce collective quantum state rotation errors, and observe the suppression of rotation errors by more than 21 dB in the context of collective population measurements of the spin states of an ensemble of $2.1 \times 10^5$ laser cooled and trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms. The large reduction in rotation noise enables direct resolution of spin state populations 13(1) dB below the fundamental quantum projection noise limit. Further, the spin state measurement projects the system into an entangled state with 9.5(5) dB of di…
We experimentally emulate, in a controlled fashion, the non-Markovian dynamics of a pure dephasing spin-boson model at zero temperature. Specifically, we use a randomized set of external radio-frequency fields to engineer a desired noise power-spectrum to effectively realize a non-Markovian environment for a single NMR qubit. The information backflow, characteristic to the non-Markovianity, is captured in the nonmonotonicity of the decoherence function and von Neumann entropy of the system. Using such emulated non-Markovian environments, we experimentally study the efficiency of the Carr-Purce…
Various parameters of a trapped collection of cold and ultracold atoms can be determined non--destructively by measuring the phase shift of an off--resonant probe beam, caused by the state dependent index of refraction of the atoms. The dispersive light--atom interaction, however, gives rise to a differential light shift (AC Stark shift) between the atomic states which, for a nonuniform probe intensity distribution, causes an inhomogeneous dephasing between the atoms. In this paper, we investigate the effects of this inhomogeneous light shift in non--destructive measurement schemes. We interpr…
Decoherence largely limits the physical realization of qubits and its mitigation is critical to quantum science. Here, we construct a robust qubit embedded in a decoherence-protected subspace, obtained by hybridizing an applied microwave drive with the ground-state electron spin of a silicon carbide divacancy defect. The qubit is protected from magnetic, electric, and temperature fluctuations, which account for nearly all relevant decoherence channels in the solid state. This culminates in an increase of the qubit's inhomogeneous dephasing time by over four orders of magnitude (to > 22 millise…
Fast quantum oscillations of a charge qubit in a double quantum dot fabricated in a Si/SiGe heterostructure are demonstrated and characterized experimentally. The measured inhomogeneous dephasing time T2* ranges from 127ps to ~2.1ns; it depends substantially on how the energy difference of the two qubit states varies with external voltages, consistent with a decoherence process that is dominated by detuning noise(charge noise that changes the asymmetry of the qubit's double-well potential). In the regime with the shortest T2*, applying a charge-echo pulse sequence increases the measured inhomo…
We study the occurrence of errors in a continuously decoupled two-qubit state during a $\sqrt{SWAP}$ quantum operation under decoherence. We consider a realization of this quantum gate based on the Heisenberg exchange interaction, which alone suffices for achieving universal quantum computation. Furthermore, we introduce a continuous-dynamical-decoupling scheme that commutes with the Heisenberg Hamiltonian to protect it from the amplitude damping and dephasing errors caused by the system-environment interaction. We consider two error-protection settings. One protects the qubits from both ampli…
Topological quantum computation encodes quantum information nonlocally by nucleating non-Abelian anyons separated by distances $L$, typically spanning the qubit device size. This nonlocality renders topological qubits exponentially immune to dephasing from all sources of classical noise with operator support local on the scale of $L$. We perform detailed analytical and numerical analyses of a time-domain Ramsey-type protocol for noisy Majorana-based qubits that is designed to validate this coveted topological protection in near-term devices such as the so-called `tetron' design. By assessing d…
We solve the long-standing central spin problem for a general set of inhomogeneous bath couplings and a large class of initial bath states. We compute the time evolution of the coherence of a central spin coupled to a spin bath by resumming all orders of the time-convolutionless master equation, thus avoiding the need to assume weak coupling to the bath. The fully quantum, non-Markovian solution is obtained in the large-bath limit and is valid up to a timescale set by the largest coupling constant. Our result captures the full decoherence of an electron spin qubit coupled to a nuclear spin bat…
Fault-tolerant quantum computation with depolarization error often requires demanding error threshold and resource overhead. If the operations can maintain high noise bias -- dominated by dephasing error with small bit-flip error -- we can achieve hardware-efficient fault-tolerant quantum computation with a more favorable error threshold. Distinct from two-level physical systems, multi-level systems (such as harmonic oscillators) can achieve a desirable set of bias-preserving quantum operations while using continuous engineered dissipation or Hamiltonian protection to stabilize to the encoding…
We re-examine a scheme generalized by [R. Finkelstein et al, Phys. Rev. X 11, 011008 (2021)], whose original purpose was to remove the effects of static Doppler broadening from an ensemble of non-interacting two-level systems (qubits). This scheme involves the simultaneous application of red and blue detuned drives between a qubit level and an auxiliary level, and by carefully choosing the drive amplitudes and detunings, the drive-induced energy shifts can exactly compensate the inhomogeneous static Doppler-induced frequency shifts - effectively removing the inhomogeneous Doppler broadening. W…
We apply our recently developed resonance perturbation theory to describe the dynamics of magnetization in paramagnetic spin systems interacting simultaneously with local and collective bosonic environments. We derive explicit expressions for the evolution of the reduced density matrix elements. This allows us to calculate explicitly the dynamics of the macroscopic magnetization, including characteristic relaxation and dephasing time-scales. We demonstrate that collective effects (i) do not influence the character of the relaxation processes but merely renormalize the relaxation times, and (ii…
We introduce a figure of merit for a quantum memory which measures the preservation of entanglement between a qubit stored in and retrieved from the memory and an auxiliary qubit. We consider a general quantum memory system consisting of a medium of two level absorbers, with the qubit to be stored encoded in a single photon. We derive an analytic expression for our figure of merit taking into account Gaussian fluctuations in the Hamiltonian parameters, which for example model inhomogeneous broadening and storage time dephasing. Finally we specialize to the case of an atomic quantum memory wher…
Understanding fully the dynamics of coupled electron-nuclear spin systems, which are important for the development of long-lived qubits based on solid-state systems, remains a challenge. We show that in a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot with inhomogeneous hyperfine coupling, the nuclear spins relatively strongly coupled to the electron spin form a polarized core during the dynamical polarization process. The polarized core provides a protection effect against the electron spin relaxation, reducing the decay rate by a factor of $N_1$, the number of the nuclear spins in the polarized co…
High-fidelity quantum entanglement is a key resource for quantum communication and distributed quantum computing, enabling quantum state teleportation, dense coding, and quantum encryption. Any sources of decoherence in the communication channel however degrade entanglement fidelity, thereby increasing the error rates of entangled state protocols. Entanglement purification provides a method to alleviate these non-idealities, by distilling impure states into higher-fidelity entangled states. Here we demonstrate the entanglement purification of Bell pairs shared between two remote superconductin…

In Heisenberg models with exchange anisotropy, transverse spin components are not conserved and can decay not only by transport, but also by dephasing. Here we utilize ultracold atoms to simulate the dynamics of 1D Heisenberg spin chains, and observe fast, local spin decay controlled by the anisotropy. Additionally, we directly observe an effective magnetic field created by superexchange which causes an inhomogeneous decay mechanism due to variations of lattice depth between chains, as well as dephasing within each chain due to the twofold reduction of the effective magnetic field at the edges…
A recently developed theory for eliminating decoherence and design constraints in quantum computers, ``encoded recoupling and decoupling'', is shown to be fully compatible with a promising proposal for an architecture enabling scalable ion-trap quantum computation [D. Kielpinski et al., Nature 417, 709 (2002)]. Logical qubits are encoded into pairs of ions. Logic gates are implemented using the Sorensen-Molmer (SM) scheme applied to pairs of ions at a time. The encoding offers continuous protection against collective dephasing. Decoupling pulses, that are also implemented using the SM scheme d…
Inhomogeneous dephasing from uncontrolled environmental noise can limit the coherence of a quantum sensor or qubit. For solid state spin qubits such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a dominant source of environmental noise is magnetic field fluctuations due to nearby paramagnetic impurities and instabilities in a magnetic bias field. In this work, we use ac stress generated by a diamond mechanical resonator to engineer a dressed spin basis in which a single NV center qubit is less sensitive to its magnetic environment. For a qubit in the thermally isolated subspace of this prote…
We propose an optimal set of quantum gates for a singlet-triplet qubit in a double quantum dot with two electrons utilizing the $S$-$T_-$ subspace. Qubit rotations are driven by the applied magnetic field and an orthogonal field gradient provided by a micromagnet. We optimize the fidelity of this qubit as a function of magnetic fields, taking advantage of "sweet spots" where the rotation frequencies are independent of the energy level detuning, providing protection against charge noise. We simulate gate operations and qubit rotations in the presence of quasistatic noise from charge and nuclear…
We investigate the performance of inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles as quantum memories under continuous dynamical decoupling. The role of the continuous driving field is two-fold: first, it decouples individual spins from magnetic noise; second and more important, it suppresses and reshapes the spectral inhomogeneity of spin ensembles. We show that a continuous driving field, which itself may also be inhomogeneous over the ensemble, can enhance the decay of the tails of the inhomogeneous broadening distribution considerably. This fact enables a spin ensemble based quantum memory to exp…
Encoding a qubit in logical quantum states with wavefunctions characterized by disjoint support and robust energies can offer simultaneous protection against relaxation and pure dephasing. Using a circuit-quantum-electrodynamics architecture, we experimentally realize a superconducting $0-π$ qubit, which hosts protected states suitable for quantum-information processing. Multi-tone spectroscopy measurements reveal the energy level structure of the system, which can be precisely described by a simple two-mode Hamiltonian. We find that the parity symmetry of the qubit results in charge-insensiti…
We study quantum dynamics of many-qubit systems strongly coupled to a quantized electromagnetic cavity field in the presence of decoherence and dissipation for both fermions and cavity photons, and taking into account the varying coupling strength of different qubits to the cavity field and the spread of their transition frequencies. Compact analytic solutions for time-dependent quantum state amplitudes and observables are derived for a broad class of open quantum systems in Lindblad approximation with the use of the stochastic Schroedinger equation approach. We show that depending on the init…
We study the parametric interaction between a single Nitrogen-Vacancy electronic spin and a diamond mechanical resonator in which the spin is embedded. Coupling between spin and oscillator is achieved by crystal strain, which is generated upon actuation of the oscillator and which parametrically modulates the spins' energy splitting. Under coherent microwave driving of the spin, this parametric drive leads to a locking of the spin Rabi frequency to the oscillator mode in the megahertz range. Both the Rabi oscillation decay time and the inhomogeneous spin dephasing time increase by two orders o…
