Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of non-magnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. We also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$.
Remarkably, doping isovalent $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations onto the $B$'' site in $A_2B$'$B$''O$_6$ double perovskites has the power to direct the magnetic interactions between magnetic $B$' cations. This is due to changes in orbital hybridization, which favors different superexchange pathways, and leads to the formation of alternative magnetic structures depending on whether $B$'' is $d^{10}$ or $d^0$. Furthermore, the competition generated by introducing mixtures of $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations can drive the material into the realms of exotic quantum magnetism. Here, a W$^{6+}$ $d^0$ dopant was i…
The isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$CuWO$_6$ are shown by theory and experiment to be frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnets with opposing dominant magnetic interactions. This is driven by differences in orbital hybridisation of Te$^{6+}$ and W$^{6+}$. A spin-liquid-like ground state is predicted for Ba$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ solid solution similar to recent observations in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$.
The magnetic structure of the double perovskite compound Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ was determined from neutron powder diffraction data. This material is magnetically described as an $S\,{=}\,1/2$ quasi-two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm N}\,{\simeq}\,29\,$ K. The spin structure below $T_{\rm N}$ is Néel antiferromagnetic on the square lattice, which means that the nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_1$) is stronger than the next-nearest-neighbor inter…
The evolution of spin- and orbital-ordered states has been systematically investigated for a series of insulating perovskites $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$=La,Pr,Nd,...). $R$MnO$_3$ with a large GdFeO$_3$-type distortion is regarded as a frustrated spin system having ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic (AF) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions within a MnO$_2$ plane. The staggered orbital order associated with the GdFeO$_3$-type distortion induces the anisotropic NNN interaction, and yields the unique sinusoidal and $E$-type ("up-up-down-down") AF ordered states in the distorted perovsk…
Double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6 usually involve a transition metal ion, B, with a large magnetic moment, and a non magnetic ion B'. While many double perovskites are ferromagnetic, studies on the underlying model reveal the possibility of antiferromagnetic phases as well driven by electron delocalisation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic ground state and T_c scales of the minimal double perovskite model in three dimensions using a combination of spin-fermion Monte Carlo and variational calculations. In contrast to two dimensions, where the effective magne…
We report on the magnetic properties of the layered perovskite PbVO(3). The results of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements as well as band structure calculations consistently suggest that the S=1/2 square lattice of vanadium atoms in PbVO(3) is strongly frustrated due to next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The ratio of next-nearest-neighbor (J(2)) to nearest-neighbor (J(1)) exchange integrals is estimated to be J(2)/J(1)\approx 0.2-0.4. Thus, PbVO(3) is within or close to the critical region of the J(1)-J(2) frustrated square lattice. Supporting this, no si…
The double-perovskite compounds Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are magnetically described as quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1{-}J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets with predominant $J_1$ and $J_2$ exchange interactions, respectively. We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with randomness in the magnitudes of $J_1$ and $J_2$. It was found that the low-temperature specific heat for $0.1\leq x \leq 0.5$ has a large component proportional to the temperature $T$ above 1.2 K, although the low-temperature specific heat for the two parent s…
Interesting magnetic structure found experimentally in a series of manganites RMnO$_3$, where R is a rare earth, was explained, ostensibly, by Kimura et al, in terms of a classical Heisenberg model with an assumed set of exchange parameters, nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, $J_n$. They calculated a phase diagram as a function of these parameters for the ground state, in which the important "up-up-down-down" or E-phase occurs for finite ratios of the $J_n$. In this Comment we show that this state does not occur for such ratios; the error is traced to an incorrect method …
The structural and magnetic properties of the face-centered cubic double perovskite Ba2MnWO6 were investigated using neutron powder diffraction, DC-magnetometry, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering. Ba2MnWO6 undergoes Type II long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at a Neel temperature of 8(1) K with a frustration index, f = 8. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to identify the magnetic coupling constants J1 and J2, which were found to equal -0.080 meV and -0.076 meV respectively. This indicated that both of the magnetic coupling constants were antiferromagnetic with simila…
Oxide double perovskites wherein octahedra formed by both 3d elements and sp-based heavy elements give rise to unconventional magnetic ordering and correlated quantum phenomena crucial for futuristic applications. Here, by carrying out experimental and first principles investigations, we present the electronic structure and magnetic phases of Ba2MnTeO6, where Mn^2+ ions with S = 5/2 spins constitute a perfect triangular lattice. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a large Curie- Weiss temperature -152 K suggesting the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn^2+ moments in t…

A dense phase of a post-layered perovskite Sr3Co2O6 was created by a high-pressure and high-temperature synthetic route and quenched to ambient conditions. The structure of Sr3Co2O6 was determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Sr3Co2O6 crystallizes in the K4CdCl6-type structure (an infinite chain-type structure), which is 6% denser than the known, iso-compositional layered perovskite Sr3Co2O7-d (d~1). The K4CdCl6-type Sr3Co2O6 shows complex magnetic behavior reflecting the spin-chain nature as well as the analogue oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6, whose microscopic magnetic origin is s…
We consider the superexchange in `frustrated' Jahn-Teller systems, such as the transition metal oxides NaNiO_2, LiNiO_2, and ZnMn_2O_4, in which transition metal ions with doubly degenerate orbitals form a triangular or pyrochlore lattice and are connected by the 90-degree metal-oxygen-metal bonds. We show that this interaction is much different from a more familiar exchange in systems with the 180-degree bonds, e.g. perovskites. In contrast to the strong interplay between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom in perovskites, in the 90-degree exchange systems spins and orbitals are decoupled…
Quantum magnetic properties in a geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, such as quantum spin liquid or solid and the associated spin fractionalization, are considered key in developing a new phase of matter. The feasibility of observing the quantum magnetic properties, usually found in geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, in a perovskite material with controlled disorder is demonstrated. It is found that the controlled chemical disorder, due to the chemical substitution of Ru ions by Co-ions, in a simple perovskite CaRuO3 creates a random prototype configuration o…
Several double perovskite materials of the form A_2BB'O_6 exhibit high ferromagnetic T_c, and significant low field magnetoresistance. They are also a candidate source of spin polarized electrons. The potential usefulness of these materials is, however, frustrated by mislocation of the B and B' ions, which do not organise themselves in the ideal alternating structure. The result is a strong dependence of physical properties on preparative conditions, reducing the magnetization and destroying the half-metallicity. We provide the first results on the impact of spatially correlated antisite disor…
Two B-site ordered double perovskites, La2LiMoO6 and Ba2YMoO6, based on the S = 1/2 ion, Mo5+, have been investigated in the context of geometric magnetic frustration. Powder neutron diffraction, heat capacity, susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(_SR), and 89Y NMR- including MAS NMR- data have been collected. La2LiMoO6 deviates strongly from simple Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior below 150K and zero-field cooled/ field cooled (ZFC/FC)irreversibility occurs below 20K with a weak, broad susceptibility maximum near 5K in the ZFC data. A Curie-Weiss fit shows a reduced mu_eff=1.42μ_B, (spin onl…
Nontrivial magnetic orders in the inverse-perovskite manganese nitrides are theoretically studied by constructing a classical spin model describing the magnetic anisotropy and frustrated exchange interactions inherent in specific crystal and electronic structures of these materials. With a replica-exchange Monte-Carlo technique, a theoretical analysis of this model reproduces the experimentally observed triangular Γ^{5g} and Γ^{4g} spin ordered patterns and the systematic evolution of magnetic orders. Our work solves a 40-year-old problem of nontrivial magnetism for the inverse-perovskite mang…
A quantum spin liquid state has long been predicted to arise in spin-1/2 Heisenberg square-lattice antiferromagnets at the boundary region between Néel (nearest-neighbor interaction dominates) and columnar (next-nearest-neighbor dominates) antiferromagnetic order. However, there are no known compounds in this region. Here we use $d^{10}$-$d^0$ cation mixing to tune the magnetic interactions on the square lattice while simultaneously introducing disorder. We find spin-liquid-like behavior in the double perovskite Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, where the isostructural end phases Sr$_2$CuTeO…
We formulate and study a spin-orbital model for a family of cubic double perovskites with $d^1$ ions occupying a frustrated fcc sublattice. A variational approach and a complimentary analytical analysis reveal a rich variety of phases emerging from the interplay of Hund's and spin-orbit couplings (SOC). The phase digram includes non-collinear ordered states, with or without net moment, and, remarkably, a large window of a non-magnetic disordered spin-orbit dimer phase. The present theory uncovers the physical origin of the unusual amorphous valence bond state experimentally suggested for Ba$_2…
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The neutron scattering data, which reveal gapped spin wave excitations with a very weak dispersion, are shown to be well-described by theoretical calculations on a model Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions. Our surprising finding shows that in contrast to honeycomb materials, where the Kitaev interaction manifests itself via comple…
The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temp…
While double perovskites A2BB'O6, if ordered, usually form a rock-salt-type structure with a checkerboard B/B' ordering, it is surprising that Ca2FeMnO6 has alternate FeO2 and MnO2 layers in its perovskite structure. Here we demonstrate, using density functional calculations, that this unusual layered ordering facilitates, and is largely helped by, the Fe3+-Fe5+ charge disproportionation (CD) of the formal Fe4+ ions, which would otherwise be frustrated in the common rock salt structure. To further verify the important role of the CD for stabilization of this layered ordering, we carry out a co…
Motivated by experiments on the double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, we study the magnetism of spin-orbit coupled j=1/2 iridium moments on the three-dimensional, geometrically frustrated, face-centered cubic lattice. The symmetry-allowed nearest-neighbor interaction includes Heisenberg, Kitaev, and symmetric off-diagonal exchange. A Luttinger-Tisza analysis shows a rich variety of orders, including collinear A-type antiferromagnetism, stripe order with moments along the [111]-direction, and incommensurate non-coplanar spirals, and we use Monte Carlo simulations to determine their magnet…
Neutron diffraction on the double perovskite Sr2YRuO6 with a quasi-face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice of Ru moments reveals planar magnetic correlations that condense into a partial long-range ordered state with coupled alternate antiferromagnetic (AFM) YRuO4 square layers coexisting with short-range correlations below T{N1}=32 K. A second transition to a fully ordered AFM state below T{N2}=24 K is observed. These observations are ascribed to the cancellation of the magnetic coupling between consecutive AFM square layers in FCC antiferromagnets, notably the simplest three-dimensional frustrated…
The geometrically frustrated double perovskite Ba2YMoO6 is characterized by quantum s=1/2 spins at the Mo5+ sites of an undistorted face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. Previous low-temperature characterization revealed an absence of static long-range magnetic order and suggested a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state. We report new time-of-flight and triple-axis neutron spectroscopy of Ba2YMoO6 that shows a 28 meV spin excitation with a bandwidth of ~4 meV, which vanishes above ~125 K. We identify this as the singlet-triplet excitation out of a singlet ground state, and further identify a wea…
Frustrated lanthanide oxides with dense magnetic lattices are of fundamental interest for their potential in cryogenic refrigeration due to a large ground state entropy and suppressed ordering temperatures, but can often be limited by short-range correlations. Here, we present examples of frustrated fcc oxides, Ba$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and Sr$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and the new site-disordered analog Ca$_2$GdSbO$_6$ ([CaGd]$_A$[CaSb]$_B$O$_6$), in which the magnetocaloric effect is influenced by minimal superexchange ($J_1 \sim 10$ mK). We report on the crystal structures using powder x-ray diffraction and the bu…
We theoretically investigate magnetic properties of Sr$_2$TcO$_4$, a 4d transition-metal layered perovskite of the K$_2$NiF$_4$-type with half-filled t$_{2g}$ states. The effect of local Coulomb repulsion between the t$_{2g}$ orbitals is included within the density-functional theory (DFT)+U and DFT+dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) methods. The DFT+DMFT predicts paramagnetic Sr$_2$TcO$_4$ to be close to the Mott insulator-to-metal transition, similarly to the cubic compound SrTcO$_3$. The inter-site exchange interactions computed within the DFT+DMFT framework point to a strong antiferromagnet…
Spin-reorientation phase transitions that involve the rotation of a crystal$'$s magnetization have been well characterized in distorted-perovskite oxides such as the orthoferrites. In these systems spin reorientation occurs due to competing rare-earth and transition metal anisotropies coupled via $f$-$d$ exchange. Here, we demonstrate an alternative paradigm for spin reorientation in distorted perovskites. We show that the $R_2\mathrm{CuMnMn_4O_{12}}$ (R = Y or Dy) triple A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskites have three ordered magnetic phases and up to two spin-reorientation phase tra…
We report the crystal structure, magnetization and neutron scattering measurements on the double perovskite Ba$_2$YOsO$_6$. The $Fm\overline{3}m$ space group is found both at 290~K and 3.5~K with cell constants $a_0 = 8.3541(4)$~Å and $8.3435(4)$~Å, respectively. Os$^{5+}$ ($5d^3$) ions occupy a non-distorted, geometrically frustrated face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattice. A Curie-Weiss temperature $θ= -772$~K suggests the presence of a large antiferromagnetic interaction and a high degree of magnetic frustration. A magnetic transition to long range antiferromagnetic order, consistent with a Type …
The geometrically frustrated double perovskite Ba2YRuO6 has magnetic 4d3 Ru5+ ions decorating an undistorted face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. This material has been previously reported to exhibit commensurate long-range antiferromagnetic order below T_N = 36K, a factor f = 15 times lower than its Curie-Weiss temperature Theta_CW = -522 K, and purported short-range order to T* = 47K. We report new time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy of Ba2YRuO6 which shows the development of a 5 meV spin gap in the vicinity of the [100] magnetic ordering wavevector below T_N = 36K, with the transition to long…
The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and time scales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($μ^+$SR) microscopic technique and bulk AC/DC magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO$_6$ double perovskite. As a result we are able to discern and report a newly found dynamic phase transition and the formation of magnetic domains below and above the known magnetic transitio…
In 5$d^2$ Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, the lowest pseudospin states form a non-Kramers doublet, which carries quadrupolar and octupolar moments. A family of double perovskites where magnetic ions form a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice was suggested to unveil an octupolar order offering a rare example in $d$-orbital systems. The proposed order requires a ferromagnetic (FM) octupolar interaction, since the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Ising model is highly frustrated on the fcc lattice. A microscopic model was recently derived for various lattices: for an edge-sharing octahedra …
Sr$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ would be a ferromagnetic (FM) insulator in terms of the common superexchange mechanism between the first nearest neighboring (1NN) magnetic ions Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_{2g}^{6}e_{g}^{2}$) and Ir$^{6+}$ ($t_{2g}^{3}$). However, the observed antiferromagnetic (AF) order questions this viewpoint. In this work, we present first-principles calculations and find that while the 1NN Ni$^{2+}$-Ir$^{6+}$ exchange is indeed FM, the 2NN and 3NN couplings in the fcc Ir (and Ni) sublattice are AF. Moreover, the 2NN AF Ir-Ir coupling turns out to be even stronger than the 1NN FM Ni-Ir coupling, th…
We establish the double perovskite Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ as a nearly ideal model system for j=1/2 moments, with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering indicating a deviation of less than 1% from the ideally cubic j=1/2 state. The local j=1/2 moments form an fcc lattice and are found to order antiferromagnetically at $T_N$=14K, more than an order of magnitude below the Curie-Weiss temperature. Model calculations show that the geometric frustration of the fcc Heisenberg antiferromagnet is further enhanced by a next-nearest neighbor exchange, indicated by ab initio theory. Magnetic order is driven by a bo…
The double-exchange model, which has been extensively studied in the context of colossal magneto-resistance in perovskite manganese oxides, is known to exhibit a ferromagnetic metallic state at low temperatures because of the interplay between localized moments and itinerant electrons through the Hund's-rule coupling. Here we investigate numerically the ferromagnetic transition in the double-exchange model defined on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice as a simple model for ferromagnetic pyrochlore oxides. We demonstrate that the finite-size corrections are largely reduced by implementing averag…
The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5\textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment μ$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests …

The role of rare-earth (R) ions on the magnetodielectric (MD) coupling is always intriguing and markedly different for different systems. Although many reports are available concerning this aspect in frustrated 3d-transition metal oxides, no such reports exist on higher d (4d/5d)-orbital based systems due to the rare availability of highly insulating 4d/5d-systems. Here, we systematically investigated the magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetodielectric behavior of the 6H-perovskites Ba3RRu2O9 for different R-ions, namely, R= Sm, Tb and Ho, which magnetically order at 12, 9.5 and 10.2…
$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic catio…
Hybrid transition metal oxides continue to attract attention due to their multiple degrees of freedom ($e.g.$, lattice, charge, spin, and orbital) and versatile properties. Here we investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the newly synthesized double perovskite Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$, using crystal field theory, superexchange model analysis, density functional calculations, and parallel tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) simulations. Our results indicate that Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$ has the Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_{2g}^{6}e_{g}^{2}$)-Ir$^{6+}$ ($t_{2g}^{3}$) charge states. The first nearest-neighboring (1NN) Ni…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites RMnO3 are theoretically studied by focusing on crucial roles of the symmetric magnetostriction or the Peierls-type spin-phonon coupling through extending our previous work [M. Mochizuki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037205 (2010)]. We first construct a microscopic classical Heisenberg model for RMnO3 including the frustrated spin exchanges, single-ion anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We also incorporate the lattice degree of freedom coupled to the Mn spins via the Peierls-type magnetostriction. By analyzing t…
We carried out AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy on the cubic double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, down to 50 mK. Below ~1 K the muon relaxation is typical of a magnetic insulator with a spin-liquid type ground state, i.e. without broken symmetries or frozen moments. However, the AC susceptibility revealed a dilute-spin-glass like transition below ~ 1 K. Antiferromagnetically coupled Mo5+ 4d1 electrons in triply degenerate t2g orbitals are in this material arranged in a geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. Bulk magnetic susceptibility data has previously bee…
Using detailed synchrotron diffraction, magnetization, thermodynamic and transport measurements, we investigate the relationship between the mixed valence of Ir, lattice strain and the resultant structural and magnetic ground states in the geometrically frustrated triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$NaIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$. We observe a complex interplay between lattice strain and structural phase co-existence, which is in sharp contrast to what is typically observed in this family of compounds. The low temperature magnetic ground state is characterized by the absence of long range order, and points t…
The layered β-NaMnO2, a promising Na-ion energy-storage material has been investigated for its triangular lattice capability to promote complex magnetic configurations that may release symmetry restrictions for the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic orders. The complexity of the neutron powder diffraction patterns underlines that the routinely adopted commensurate structural models are inadequate. Instead, a single-phase superspace symmetry description is necessary, demonstrating that the material crystallizes in a compositionally modulated q= (0.077(1), 0, 0) structure. Here, Mn3+ Jahn…

The spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg model is predicted to have a quantum disordered ground state when magnetic frustration is maximized by competing nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ interactions ($J_2/J_1 \approx 0.5$). The double perovskites Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are isostructural spin-1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnets with Néel ($J_1$ dominates) and columnar ($J_2$ dominates) magnetic order, respectively. Here we characterize the full isostructural solid solution series Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) tunable from Néel order to quant…
In the past years, magnetism-driven ferroelectricity and gigantic magnetoelectric effects have been reported for a number of frustrated magnets with spiral magnetic orders. Such materials are of high current interest due to their potential for spintronics and low-power magnetoelectric devices. However, their low magnetic order temperatures (typically <100K) greatly restrict their fields of application. Here we demonstrate that the stability domain of the spiral phase in the perovskite YBaCuFeO5 can be enlarged by more than 150K through a controlled manipulation of the Fe/Cu chemical disorder. …
We review the consequences of intrinsic frustration of the orbital superexchange and of spin-orbital entanglement. While Heisenberg perturbing interactions remove frustration in the compass model, the lowest columnar excitations are robust in the nanoscopic compass clusters and might be used for quantum computations. Entangled spin-orbital states determine the ground states in some cases, while in others concern excited states and lead to measurable consequences, as in the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites. On-site entanglement for strong spin-orbit coupling generates the frustrated Kitaev-Heisenberg mode…
We study effects of disorder (randomness) in a 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ quantum spin system, the $J$-$Q$ model with a 6-spin interaction $Q$ supplementing the Heisenberg exchange $J$. In the absence of disorder the system hosts antiferromagnetic (AFM) and columnar valence-bond-solid (VBS) ground states. The VBS breaks $Z_4$ symmetry, and in the presence of arbitrarily weak disorder it forms domains. Using QMC simulations, we demonstrate two kinds of such disordered VBS states. Upon dilution, a removed site leaves a localized spin in the opposite sublattice. These spins form AFM order. For ran…
The concept of spin-orbital entanglement on superexchange bonds in transition metal oxides is introduced and explained on several examples. It is shown that spin-orbital entanglement in superexchange models destabilizes the long-range (spin and orbital) order and may lead either to a disordered spin-liquid state or to novel phases at low temperature which arise from strongly frustrated interactions. Such novel ground states cannot be described within the conventionally used mean field theory which separates spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Even in cases where the ground states are disentan…
We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on…
