Motivated by experiments on the double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, we study the magnetism of spin-orbit coupled j=1/2 iridium moments on the three-dimensional, geometrically frustrated, face-centered cubic lattice. The symmetry-allowed nearest-neighbor interaction includes Heisenberg, Kitaev, and symmetric off-diagonal exchange. A Luttinger-Tisza analysis shows a rich variety of orders, including collinear A-type antiferromagnetism, stripe order with moments along the [111]-direction, and incommensurate non-coplanar spirals, and we use Monte Carlo simulations to determine their magnetic ordering temperatures. We argue that existing thermodynamic data on these iridates underscores the presence of a dominant Kitaev exchange, and also suggest a resolution to the puzzle of why La2ZnIrO6 exhibits `weak' ferromagnetism, but La2MgIrO6 does not.
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the weakly distorted face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ and La$_2$MgIrO$_6$, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The powder inelastic neutron scattering data on these geometrically frustrated $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulators provide clear evidence for gapped spin wave excitations with very weak dispersion. The INS results and thermodynamic data on these materials can be reproduced by conventional Heisenberg-Ising models wi…
We investigate magnetic properties of a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice and exchange interactions between the nearest- and next-nearest neighbours, J1 and J2. In a collinear phase with the wave vector Q = (pi,pi,pi) the equations of the self-consistent spin-wave theory for the sublattice magnetization and the average short range order parameter are obtained and numerically solved. The dependence of the Neel temperature T_N on the ratio J2/J1 is obtained. It is shown, that at strong enough frustration there is a wide temperature region above T_N wi…
We report the characterisation of natural samples of the cubic pyrite mineral MnS2 using very high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques. At low temperatures we find a new low temperature polymorph, which results from coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. Below the magnetic ordering temperature T_N= 48 K, we detect a pseudo-tetragonal distortion with a tiny c/a ratio of 1.0006. The structure can be refined in the space group Pbca. The symmetry lowering reduces magnetic frustration in the fcc Mn2+ lattice and is likely responsible for the previously reported lo…
The geometrically frustrated double perovskite Ba2YMoO6 is characterized by quantum s=1/2 spins at the Mo5+ sites of an undistorted face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. Previous low-temperature characterization revealed an absence of static long-range magnetic order and suggested a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state. We report new time-of-flight and triple-axis neutron spectroscopy of Ba2YMoO6 that shows a 28 meV spin excitation with a bandwidth of ~4 meV, which vanishes above ~125 K. We identify this as the singlet-triplet excitation out of a singlet ground state, and further identify a wea…
Spin wave dispersion in the frustrated fcc type-III antiferromagnet MnS$_2$ has been determined by inelastic neutron scattering using a triple-axis spectrometer. Existence of multiple spin wave branches, with significant separation between high-energy and low-energy modes highlighting the intrinsic magnetic frustration effect on the fcc lattice, is explained in terms of a spin wave analysis carried out for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for this $S=5/2$ system with nearest and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Comparison of the calculated dispersion with spin wave measuremen…
The geometrically frustrated double perovskite Ba2YRuO6 has magnetic 4d3 Ru5+ ions decorating an undistorted face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. This material has been previously reported to exhibit commensurate long-range antiferromagnetic order below T_N = 36K, a factor f = 15 times lower than its Curie-Weiss temperature Theta_CW = -522 K, and purported short-range order to T* = 47K. We report new time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy of Ba2YRuO6 which shows the development of a 5 meV spin gap in the vicinity of the [100] magnetic ordering wavevector below T_N = 36K, with the transition to long…
We establish the double perovskite Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ as a nearly ideal model system for j=1/2 moments, with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering indicating a deviation of less than 1% from the ideally cubic j=1/2 state. The local j=1/2 moments form an fcc lattice and are found to order antiferromagnetically at $T_N$=14K, more than an order of magnitude below the Curie-Weiss temperature. Model calculations show that the geometric frustration of the fcc Heisenberg antiferromagnet is further enhanced by a next-nearest neighbor exchange, indicated by ab initio theory. Magnetic order is driven by a bo…
We report the crystal structure, magnetization and neutron scattering measurements on the double perovskite Ba$_2$YOsO$_6$. The $Fm\overline{3}m$ space group is found both at 290~K and 3.5~K with cell constants $a_0 = 8.3541(4)$~Å and $8.3435(4)$~Å, respectively. Os$^{5+}$ ($5d^3$) ions occupy a non-distorted, geometrically frustrated face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattice. A Curie-Weiss temperature $θ= -772$~K suggests the presence of a large antiferromagnetic interaction and a high degree of magnetic frustration. A magnetic transition to long range antiferromagnetic order, consistent with a Type …

The Heisenberg model on a face center cubic (fcc) lattice is a typical three-dimensional frustrated spin system expected to have magnetization plateaus and supersolid phases. There are model compounds $A_2$CoTeO$_6$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Pb) for the fcc lattice but with lattice distortions. Motivated by the presence of the compounds, we investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a tetragonally distorted fcc lattice in the magnetic field using a large-size cluster mean-field method for the sake of finding new supersolid phases. We find five supersolid phases in …
Spin waves in the type-III ordered antiferromagnetic state of the frustrated $t$-$t'$ Hubbard model on the fcc lattice are calculated to investigate finite-$U$-induced competing interaction and frustration effects on magnetic excitations and instabilities. Particularly strong competing interactions generated due to interplay of fcc lattice geometry and magnetic order result in significant spin wave softening. The calculated spin wave dispersion is found to be in qualitative agreement with the measured spin wave dispersion in the pyrite mineral $\rm Mn S_2$ obtained from inelastic neutron scatt…
Neutron diffraction on the double perovskite Sr2YRuO6 with a quasi-face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice of Ru moments reveals planar magnetic correlations that condense into a partial long-range ordered state with coupled alternate antiferromagnetic (AFM) YRuO4 square layers coexisting with short-range correlations below T{N1}=32 K. A second transition to a fully ordered AFM state below T{N2}=24 K is observed. These observations are ascribed to the cancellation of the magnetic coupling between consecutive AFM square layers in FCC antiferromagnets, notably the simplest three-dimensional frustrated…
The formation of coplanar spin spirals is a common motif in the magnetic ordering of many frustrated magnets. For classical antiferromagnets, geometric frustration can lead to a massively degenerate ground state manifold of spirals whose propagation vectors can be described, depending on the lattice geometry, by points (triangular), lines (fcc), surfaces (frustrated diamond) or completely flat bands (pyrochlore). Here we demonstrate an exact mathematical correspondence of these spiral manifolds of classical antiferromagnets with the Fermi surfaces of free-fermion band structures. We provide an…
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The neutron scattering data, which reveal gapped spin wave excitations with a very weak dispersion, are shown to be well-described by theoretical calculations on a model Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions. Our surprising finding shows that in contrast to honeycomb materials, where the Kitaev interaction manifests itself via comple…
Neutron scattering experiment on NiS2 single crystal revealed a honeycomb pattern of the intensity distribution in reciprocal lattice space (continuous-line structure along the fcc zone boundary) providing the first direct evidence for nearly frustrated antiferromagnetism (AF) on the face centered cubic (fcc) lattice. A small but finite lattice distortion below 30.9 K lifts the degeneracy of the magnetic ground state due to the frustration and eventually result in the coexistence of the type I and the type II AF long range orderings, which are mutually incompatible in the fcc symmetry at highe…
Double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6 usually involve a transition metal ion, B, with a large magnetic moment, and a non magnetic ion B'. While many double perovskites are ferromagnetic, studies on the underlying model reveal the possibility of antiferromagnetic phases as well driven by electron delocalisation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic ground state and T_c scales of the minimal double perovskite model in three dimensions using a combination of spin-fermion Monte Carlo and variational calculations. In contrast to two dimensions, where the effective magne…
One of the signatures of the face-centered cubic (fcc) antiferromagnet as a typical example of a geometrically frustrated system is the large ground state degeneracy of the classical nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg (isotropic) model on this lattice. In particular, collinear states are degenerate with non-collinear and non-coplanar ones: this degeneracy is accidental and is expected to be lifted by anisotropic exchange interactions. In this work, we derive the most general nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange model allowed by the space-group symmetry of the noncentro…
As materials with suppressed ordering temperatures and enhanced ground state entropies, frustrated magnetic oxides are ideal candidates for cryogenic magnetocaloric refrigeration. While previous materials design has focused on tuning the magnetic moments, their interactions, and density of moments on the lattice, there has been relatively little attention to frustrated lattices. Prior theoretical work has shown that the magnetocaloric cooling rate at the saturation field is proportional to a macroscopic number of soft mode excitations that arise due to the classical ground state degeneracy. Th…
In frustrated magnetic systems with competing interactions fluctuations can lift the residual accidental degeneracy. We argue that the state selection may have different outcomes for quantum and thermal order by disorder. As an example, we consider the semiclassical Heisenberg fcc antiferromagnet with only the nearest-neighbor interactions. Zero-point oscillations select the type 3 collinear antiferromagnetic state at T=0. Thermal fluctuations favor instead the type 1 antiferromagnetic structure. The opposite tendencies result in a finite-temperature transition between the two collinear states…
The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5\textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment μ$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests …
We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the geometrically frustrated face centered cubic (FCC) lattice, using an auxiliary field based real space technique. The low temperature state is a paramagnetic metal at weak interaction, an antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) with flux like order at intermediate interaction, and an AFI with `C type' order at very strong interaction. Remarkably, there is a narrow window between the paramagnetic metal and the AFI where the system exhibits spin glass behaviour arising from the presence of disordered but `frozen' local moments. The spin glass state is metal…
Neutron scattering experiments on frustrated fcc - antiferromagnet HoB$_{12}$ have been performed above T$_{N}$ = 7.4 K. Diffuse scattering patterns indicate that above Neel temperature correlations between neighboring magnetic moments of Ho - ions appear, similar to the appearance of coupled spin-pairs (dimers) in low dimensional magnets. Moreover, the diffuse patterns show a symmetry reduction from fcc to simple cubic. Analogous behavior in 3D systems is not known, although it was predicted by theory. The role of various interactions leading to this behavior is being analyzed and discussed.
$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic catio…
Sr$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ would be a ferromagnetic (FM) insulator in terms of the common superexchange mechanism between the first nearest neighboring (1NN) magnetic ions Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_{2g}^{6}e_{g}^{2}$) and Ir$^{6+}$ ($t_{2g}^{3}$). However, the observed antiferromagnetic (AF) order questions this viewpoint. In this work, we present first-principles calculations and find that while the 1NN Ni$^{2+}$-Ir$^{6+}$ exchange is indeed FM, the 2NN and 3NN couplings in the fcc Ir (and Ni) sublattice are AF. Moreover, the 2NN AF Ir-Ir coupling turns out to be even stronger than the 1NN FM Ni-Ir coupling, th…
Materials with strong spin-orbit interactions are presently a main target in the search for systems with novel magnetic properties. Magnetic anisotropies can be very large in such compounds, ranging from strongly frustrated Kitaev exchange in honeycomb iridates and the associated spin-liquid states to robust antisymmetric couplings in square-lattice Sr_2IrO_4 . Here we predict from ab initio quantum chemistry calculations that another highly unusual regime is realized in pyrochlore iridium oxides: the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction can vanish whilst the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii- M…

We formulate and study a spin-orbital model for a family of cubic double perovskites with $d^1$ ions occupying a frustrated fcc sublattice. A variational approach and a complimentary analytical analysis reveal a rich variety of phases emerging from the interplay of Hund's and spin-orbit couplings (SOC). The phase digram includes non-collinear ordered states, with or without net moment, and, remarkably, a large window of a non-magnetic disordered spin-orbit dimer phase. The present theory uncovers the physical origin of the unusual amorphous valence bond state experimentally suggested for Ba$_2…
In 5$d^2$ Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, the lowest pseudospin states form a non-Kramers doublet, which carries quadrupolar and octupolar moments. A family of double perovskites where magnetic ions form a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice was suggested to unveil an octupolar order offering a rare example in $d$-orbital systems. The proposed order requires a ferromagnetic (FM) octupolar interaction, since the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Ising model is highly frustrated on the fcc lattice. A microscopic model was recently derived for various lattices: for an edge-sharing octahedra …
Properties of thin films of geometrically frustrated ABC stacked antiferromagnetic kagome layers are examined using Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of having an easy-axis anisotropy on the surface layers and cubic anisotropy in the interior layers is explored. The spin structure at the surface is shown to be different from that of the bulk 3D fcc system, where surface axial anisotropy tends to align spins along the surface [111] normal axis. This alignment tendency then propagates only weakly to the interior layers through exchange coupling. Results are shown for the specific he…
Frustrated lanthanide oxides with dense magnetic lattices are of fundamental interest for their potential in cryogenic refrigeration due to a large ground state entropy and suppressed ordering temperatures, but can often be limited by short-range correlations. Here, we present examples of frustrated fcc oxides, Ba$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and Sr$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and the new site-disordered analog Ca$_2$GdSbO$_6$ ([CaGd]$_A$[CaSb]$_B$O$_6$), in which the magnetocaloric effect is influenced by minimal superexchange ($J_1 \sim 10$ mK). We report on the crystal structures using powder x-ray diffraction and the bu…
We have studied the Heisenberg antiferromagnets characterized by the magnetic structures with the periods being two times larger than the lattice period. We have considered all the types of the Bravais lattices (simple cubic, bcc and fcc) and divided all these antiferromagnets into 7 classes i.e. 3 plus 4 classes denoted with symbols A and B correspondingly. The order parameter characterizing the degeneracies of the magnetic structures is an ordinary Neel vector for A classes and so-called 4-complex for B classes. We have taken into account the fluctuation corrections for these states within t…
We perform extensive classifications of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids on the simple cubic, body centered cubic, and face centered cubic lattices using a spin-rotation invariant fermionic projective symmetry group approach. Taking into account that all three lattices share the same point group $O_h$, we apply an efficient gauge where the classification for the simple cubic lattice can be partially carried over to the other two lattices. We identify hundreds of projective representations for each of the three lattices, however, when constructing short-range mean-field models for the fermio…
The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and time scales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($μ^+$SR) microscopic technique and bulk AC/DC magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO$_6$ double perovskite. As a result we are able to discern and report a newly found dynamic phase transition and the formation of magnetic domains below and above the known magnetic transitio…
We carried out AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy on the cubic double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, down to 50 mK. Below ~1 K the muon relaxation is typical of a magnetic insulator with a spin-liquid type ground state, i.e. without broken symmetries or frozen moments. However, the AC susceptibility revealed a dilute-spin-glass like transition below ~ 1 K. Antiferromagnetically coupled Mo5+ 4d1 electrons in triply degenerate t2g orbitals are in this material arranged in a geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. Bulk magnetic susceptibility data has previously bee…
Hybrid transition metal oxides continue to attract attention due to their multiple degrees of freedom ($e.g.$, lattice, charge, spin, and orbital) and versatile properties. Here we investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the newly synthesized double perovskite Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$, using crystal field theory, superexchange model analysis, density functional calculations, and parallel tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) simulations. Our results indicate that Ba$_2$NiIrO$_6$ has the Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_{2g}^{6}e_{g}^{2}$)-Ir$^{6+}$ ($t_{2g}^{3}$) charge states. The first nearest-neighboring (1NN) Ni…
