We report on the core-collapse supernova simulation we conducted for a 11.2 M progenitor model in three-dimensional space up to 20 ms after bounce, using a radiation hydrodynamics code with full Boltzmann neutrino transport. We solve the six-dimensional Boltzmann equations for three neutrino species and the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations with Furusawa and Togashi's nuclear equation of state. We focus on the prompt convection at 10 ms after bounce and investigate how neutrinos are transported in the convective matter. We apply a new analysis based on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Eddington tensor and make a comparison between the Boltzmann transport results and the M1 closure approximation in the transition regime between the optically thick and thin limits. We visualize the eigenvalues and eigenvectors using an ellipsoid, in which each principal axis is parallel to one of the eigenvectors and has a length proportional to the corresponding eigenvalue. This approach enables us to understand the difference between the Eddington tensor derived directly from the Boltzmann simulation and the one given by the M1 prescription from a new perspective. We find that the longest principal axis of the ellipsoid is almost always nearly parallel to the energy flux in the M1 closure approximation whereas in the Boltzmann simulation it becomes perpendicular in some transition regions, where the mean free path is 0.1 times the radius. In three spatial dimensions, the convective motions make it difficult to predict where this happens and to possibly improve the closure relation there.
In this paper we study the dynamics of flavor transformation for neutrinos propagating in the very dense environment of astrophysical compact objects as Type II supernova in post collapse phase and proto-neutron stars. The analysis is based on the generalized Boltzmann equation, which incorporates the neutrinoneutrino interaction. We focus the analysis on the possible collective flavor dynamics, which can displays bipolar and synchronized flavor oscillations, and the associated transition from single-angle to multi-angle regime. To solve the kinetic equations we use an expansion in Legendre po…
A critical mass ONe core with a high ignition density is considered to end in gravitational collapse leading to neutron star formation. Being distinct from a Fe core collapse, the final evolution involves combustion flame propagation, in which complex phase transition from ONe elements into the nuclear-statistical-equilibrium (NSE) state takes place. We simulate the core evolution from the O+Ne ignition until the bounce shock penetrates the whole core, using a state-of-the-art 1D Lagrangian neutrino-radiation-hydrodynamic code, in which important nuclear burning, electron capture, and neutrino…
For a suite of fourteen core-collapse models during the dynamical first second after bounce, we calculate the detailed neutrino "light" curves expected in the underground neutrino observatories Super-Kamiokande, DUNE, JUNO, and IceCube. These results are given as a function of neutrino-oscillation modality (normal or inverted hierarchy) and progenitor mass (specifically, post-bounce accretion history), and illuminate the differences between the light curves for 1D (spherical) models that don't explode with the corresponding 2D (axisymmetric) models that do. We are able to identify clear signat…
Using full Boltzmann neutrino transport, we performed two-dimensional (2D) core-collapse supernova simulations in axisymmetry for two progenitor models with 11.2M and 15.0M both rotational and non-rotational. We employed the results obtained in the early post-bounce phase (t < 20 ms) to assess performance under rapid rotation of some closure relations commonly employed in the truncated moment method. We first made a comparison in 1D under spherical symmetry, though, of the Eddington factor p defined in the fluid rest frame (FR). We confirmed that the maximum entropy closure for the Fermionic d…
We study gravitational waves (GWs) from a set of two-dimensional multi-group neutrino radiation hydrodynamic simulations of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Our goal is to systematize the current knowledge about the post-bounce CCSN GW signal and recognize the templatable features that could be used by the ground-based laser interferometers. We demonstrate that starting from ~400ms after core bounce the dominant GW signal represents the fundamental quadrupole (l=2) oscillation mode (f-mode) of the proto-neutron star (PNS), which can be accurately reproduced by a linear perturbation analysis o…
We study the impact of rotation on the multimessenger signals of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) with the occurrence of a first-order hadron-quark phase transition (HQPT). We simulate CCSNe with the \texttt{FLASH} code starting from a 20~$M_\odot$ progenitor with different rotation rates, and using the RDF equation of state from \textit{Bastian} 2021 that prescribes the HQPT. Rotation is found to delay the onset of the HQPT and the resulting dynamical collapse of the protocompact star (PCS) due to the centrifugal support. All models with the HQPT experience a second bounce shock which leads t…
We explore the influence of progenitor mass and rotation on the gravitational-wave (GW) emission from core-collapse supernovae, during the postbounce, preexplosion, accretion-phase. We present the results from 15 two-dimensional (2D) neutrino radiation-hydrodynamic simulations from initial stellar collapse to $\sim$300 ms after core bounce. We examine the features of the GW signals for four zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) progenitor masses ranging from 12 $M_\odot$ to 60 $M_\odot$ and four core rotation rates from 0 to 3 rad s$^{-1}$. We find that GW strain immediately around core bounce is fair…

The present article investigates the impact of muons on core-collapse supernovae, with particular focus on the early muon neutrino emission. While the presence of muons is well understood in the context of neutron stars, until the recent study by Bollig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 242702 (2017)] the role of muons in core-collapse supernovae had been neglected--electrons and neutrinos were the only leptons considered. In their study, Bollig et al. disentangled the muon and tau neutrinos and antineutrinos and included a variety of muonic weak reactions, all of which the present paper follows c…
We study the consequences of a hadron-quark phase transition (PT) in failing core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) which give birth to stellar-mass black holes (BH). We perform a suite of neutrino-transport general-relativistic hydrodynamic simulations in spherical symmetry with 21 progenitor models and a hybrid equation of state (EoS) including hadrons and quarks. We find that the effect of the PT on the CCSN postbounce dynamics is a function of the bounce compactness parameter $ξ_{2.2}$. For $ξ_{2.2}\gtrsim0.24$, the PT leads to a second dynamical collapse of the protocompact star (PCS). While BH…
Recent studies have highlighted the sensitivity of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) models to electron-capture (EC) rates on neutron-rich nuclei near the N=50 closed-shell region. In this work, we perform a large suite of one-dimensional CCSN simulations for 200 stellar progenitors using recently updated EC rates in this region. For comparison, we repeat the simulations using two previous implementations of EC rates: a microphysical library with parameterized N=50 rates (LMP), and an older independent-particle approximation (IPA). We follow the simulations through shock revival up to several s…
We present the first results of our spatially axisymmetric core-collapse supernova simulations with full Boltzmann neutrino transport, which amount to a time-dependent 5-dimensional (2 in space and 3 in momentum space) problem in fact. Special relativistic effects are fully taken into account with a two-energy-grid technique. We performed two simulations for a progenitor of 11.2M, employing different nuclear equations-of-state (EOS's): Lattimer and Swesty's EOS with the incompressibility of K = 220MeV (LS EOS) and Furusawa's EOS based on the relativistic mean field theory with the TM1 paramete…
The CHIMERA code is a multi-dimensional multi-physics engine dedicated primarily to the simulation of core collapse supernova explosions. One of the most important aspects of these explosions is their capacity to produce gravitational radiation that is detectable by Earth-based laser-interferometric gravitational wave observatories such as LIGO and VIRGO. We present here preliminary gravitational signatures of two-dimensional models with non-rotating progenitors. These simulations exhibit explosions, which are followed for more than half a second after stellar core bounce.
This paper is a sequel to our previous one (Kato et al.2015), which calculated the luminosities and spectra of electron-type anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$'s) from the progenitors of core-collapse supernovae. Expecting that a capability to detect electron-type neutrinos ($ν_e$'s) will increase dramatically with the emergence of liquid-argon detectors such as DUNE, we broaden the scope in this study to include all-flavors of neutrinos emitted from the pre-bounce phase. We pick up three progenitor models of an electron capture supernova (ECSN) and iron-core collapse supernovae (FeCCSNe). We find that…
By using an average heavy nuclei model, the effects of the electron screening on electron capture (EC) in core-collapse supernovae are investigated. A one-dimension code based on the Ws15$M_{\sun}$ progenitor model is utilized to test the effects of electron screening during the collapsing process. The results show that, at high densities, the effects of EC on electron capture becomes significant. During the collapsing stage, the EC rate is decreased, the collapse timescale is prolonged and the leakage of the neutrino energy is increased. These effects lead to an appreciable decrease in the in…
We draw attention to recent high explosive (HE) experiments which provide compression of macroscopic amount of matter to high, even record, values of pressure in comparison with other HE experiments. The observed bounce after the compression corresponds to processes in core-collapse supernova explosions after neutrino trapping. Conditions provided in the experiments resemble those in core-collapse supernovae, permitting their use for laboratory astrophysics. A unique feature of the experiments is compression at low entropy. The values of specific entropy are close to those obtained in numerica…
The mechanism driving core-collapse supernovae is sensitive to the interplay between matter and neutrino radiation. However, neutrino radiation transport is very difficult to simulate, and several radiation transport methods of varying levels of approximation are available. We carefully compare for the first time in multiple spatial dimensions the discrete ordinates (DO) code of Nagakura, Yamada, and Sumiyoshi and the Monte Carlo (MC) code Sedonu, under the assumptions of a static fluid background, flat spacetime, elastic scattering, and full special relativity. We find remarkably good agreeme…
We discuss the possible impact of strange quark matter on the evolution of core-collapse supernovae with emphasis on low critical densities for the quark-hadron phase transition. For such cases the hot proto-neutron star can collapse to a more compact hybrid star configuration hundreds of milliseconds after core-bounce. The collapse triggers the formation of a second shock wave. The latter leads to a successful supernova explosion and leaves an imprint on the neutrino signal. These dynamical features are discussed with respect to their compatibility with recent neutron star mass measurements w…
It has been suggested that the observed rotation periods of radio pulsars might be induced by a non-axisymmetric spiral-mode instability in the turbulent region behind the stalled supernova bounce shock, even if the progenitor core was not initially rotating. In this paper, using the three-dimensional AMR code CASTRO with a realistic progenitor and equation of state and a simple neutrino heating and cooling scheme, we present a numerical study of the evolution in 3D of the rotational profile of a supernova core from collapse, through bounce and shock stagnation, to delayed explosion. By the en…
Neutrinos are densely populated deep inside the core of massive stars after their gravitational collapse to produce supernova explosions and form compact stars such as neutron stars (NS) and black holes (BH). It has been considered that they may change their flavor identities through so-called fast-pairwise conversions induced by mutual forward scatterings. If that is really the case, the dynamics of supernova explosion will be influenced, since the conversion may occur near the neutrino sphere, from which neutrinos are effectively emitted. In this paper, we conduct a pilot study of such possi…
We have explored the impact of sterile neutrino dark matter on core-collapse supernova explosions. We have included oscillations between electron neutrinos or mixed $μ,τ$ neutrinos and right-handed sterile neutrinos into a supernova model. We have chosen sterile neutrino masses and mixing angles that are consistent with sterile neutrino dark matter candidates as indicated by recent x-ray flux measurements. Using these simulations, we have explored the impact of sterile neutrinos on the core bounce and shock reheating. We find that, for ranges of sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle consisten…
We propose a novel numerical method for solving multi-dimensional, special relativistic Boltzmann equations for neutrinos coupled to hydrodynamics equations. It is meant to be applied to simulations of core-collapse supernovae. We handle special relativity in a non-conventional way, taking account of all orders of v/c. Consistent treatment of advection and collision terms in the Boltzmann equations is the source of difficulties, which we overcome by employing two different energy grids: Lagrangian remapped and laboratory fixed grids. We conduct a series of basic tests and perform a one-dimensi…
We report on a set of long-term general-relativistic three-dimensional (3D) multi-group (energy-dependent) neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations of core-collapse supernovae. We employ a full 3D two-moment scheme with the local M1 closure, three neutrino species, and 12 energy groups per species. With this, we follow the post-core-bounce evolution of the core of a nonrotating $27$-$M_\odot$ progenitor in full unconstrained 3D and in octant symmetry for $\gtrsim$$ 380\,\mathrm{ms}$. We find the development of an asymmetric runaway explosion in our unconstrained simulation. We test the res…
We introduce a new discrete-ordinate scheme for solving the general relativistic Boltzmann transport equation in the context of core-collapse supernovae. Our algorithm avoids the need to spell out the complicated advection terms in energy and angle that arise when the transport equation is formulated in spherical polar coordinates, in the comoving frame, or in a general relativistic spacetime. We instead approach the problem by calculating the advection of neutrinos across momentum space using an intuitive particle-like approach that has excellent conservation properties and fully accounts for…
The explosion outcome and diagnostics of core-collapse supernovae depend sensitively on the nature of the stellar progenitor, but most studies to date have focused exclusively on one-dimensional, spherically-symmetric massive star progenitors. We present some of the first core-collapse supernovae simulations of three-dimensional massive star supernovae progenitors, a 12.5- and a 15-M$_{\odot}$ model, evolved in three-dimensions from collapse to bounce through explosion with the radiation-hydrodynamic code F{\sc{ornax}}. We compare the results using those starting from three-dimensional progeni…
We study the multi-dimensional properties of neutrino transfer inside supernova cores by solving the Boltzmann equations for neutrino distribution functions in genuinely six dimensional (6D) phase space. Adopting representative snapshots of the post-bounce core from other supernova simulations in three dimensions, we solve the temporal evolutions to stationary states of neutrino distribution functions by our Boltzmann solver. Taking advantage of the multi-angle and multi-energy feature realized by the S$_n$ method in our code, we reveal the genuine characteristics of spatially three dimensiona…

We performed 2D, axisymmetric, MHD simulations with Cosmos++ in order to examine the growth of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in core--collapse supernovae. We have initialized a non--rotating 15 solar mass progenitor, infused with differential rotation and poloidal magnetic fields. The collapse of the iron core is simulated with the Shen EOS, and the parametric Ye and entropy evolution. The wavelength of the unstable mode in the post--collapse environment is expected to be only ~ 200 m. In order to achieve the fine spatial resolution requirement, we employed remapping technique after …
We study the dependence of the delayed neutrino-heating mechanism for core-collapse supernovae on the equation of state. Using a simplified treatment of the neutrino physics with a parameterized neutrino luminosity, we explore the relationship between explosion time, mass accretion rate, and neutrino luminosity for a 15 Msun progenitor in 1D and 2D. We test three different equations of state commonly used in core-collapse simulations: the models of Lattimer & Swesty (1991) with incompressibility of 180 MeV and 220 MeV, and the model of Shen et al. (1998), in order of increasing stiffness. We f…
We investigate the final collapse of rotating and non-rotating pulsational pair-instability supernova progenitors with zero-age-main-sequence masses of 60, 80, and 115$\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and iron cores between 2.37$\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and 2.72$\mathrm{M}_\odot$ by 2D hydrodynamics simulations. Using the general relativistic NADA-FLD code with energy-dependent three-flavor neutrino transport by flux-limited diffusion allows us to follow the evolution beyond the moment when the transiently forming neutron star (NS) collapses to a black hole (BH), which happens within 350$-$580 ms after bounce in al…
Using the Boltzmann-radiation-hydrodynamics code, which solves the Boltzmann equation for neutrino transport, we present the results of the simulations with the nuclear equations of state (EOSs) of Lattimer and Swesty (LS) and Furusawa and Shen (FS). We extend the simulation time of the LS model and conduct thorough investigations, though our previous paper briefly reported some of the results. Only the LS model shows the shock revival. This seems to originate from the nuclear composition: the different nuclear composition results in the different energy loss by photodissociation and hence the…
We present a first study of the progenitor star dependence of the three-dimensional (3D) neutrino mechanism of core-collapse supernovae. We employ full 3D general-relativistic multi-group neutrino radiation-hydrodynamics and simulate the post-bounce evolutions of progenitors with zero-age main sequence masses of $12$, $15$, $20$, $27$, and $40\,M_\odot$. All progenitors, with the exception of the $12\,M_\odot$ star, experience shock runaway by the end of their simulations. In most cases, a strongly asymmetric explosion will result. We find three qualitatively distinct evolutions that suggest a…
Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) emit powerful gravitational waves (GWs). Since GWs emitted by a source contain information about the source, observing GWs from CCSNe may allow us to learn more about CCSNs. We study if it is possible to infer the iron core mass from the bounce and early ring-down GW signal. We generate GW signals for a range of stellar models using numerical simulations and apply machine learning to train and classify the signals. We consider an idealized favourable scenario. First, we use rapidly rotating models, which produce stronger GWs than slowly rotating models. Second,…
We investigate the protoneutron star (PNS) convection using our newly developed general relativistic Boltzmann neutrino radiation-hydrodynamics code. This is a pilot study for more comprehensive investigations later. As such, we take a snapshot of a PNS at 2.3 seconds after bounce from a 1D PNS cooling calculation and run our simulation for $\sim160\,\mathrm{ms}$ in 2D under axisymmetry. The original PNS cooling calculation neglected convection entirely and the initial condition is linearly unstable to convection. We find in our 2D simulation that convection is instigated there indeed and expa…
We propose to employ the circular polarization of gravitational waves emitted by core-collapse supernovae as an unequivocal indication of rapid rotation deep in their cores. It has been demonstrated by three dimensional simulations that non-axisymmetric accretion flows may develop spontaneously via hydrodynamical instabilities in the post-bounce cores. It is not surprising then that the gravitational waves emitted by such fluid motions are circularly polarized. We show in this letter that a network of the second generation detectors of gravitational waves worldwide may be able to detect such p…
We investigate the emergence of hyperons in black-hole-forming failed supernovae, which are caused by the dynamical collapse of nonrotating massive stars. We perform neutrino-radiation hydrodynamical simulations in general relativity adopting realistic hyperonic equation-of-state (EOS). Attractive and repulsive cases are examined for the potential of Σ hyperons. Since hyperons soften the EOS, they shorten the time interval from the bounce to black hole formation, which corresponds to the duration of neutrino emission. This effect is larger for the attractive case than the repulsive case becaus…
The impact of electron-capture (EC) cross sections on neutron-rich nuclei on the dynamics of core-collapse during infall and early post-bounce is studied performing spherically symmetric simulations in general relativity using a multigroup scheme for neutrino transport and full nuclear distributions in extended nuclear statistical equilibrium models. We thereby vary the prescription for EC rates on individual nuclei, the nuclear interaction for the EoS, the mass model for the nuclear statistical equilibrium distribution and the progenitor model. In agreement with previous works, we show that t…
The gravitational collapse, bounce, the explosion of an iron core of an 11.2 $M_{\odot}$ star is simulated by two-dimensional neutrino-radiation hydrodynamic code. The explosion is driven by the neutrino heating aided by multi-dimensional hydrodynamic effects such as the convection. Following the explosion phase, we continue the simulation focusing on the thermal evolution of the protoneutron star up to $\sim$70 s when the crust of the neutron star is formed using one-dimensional simulation. We find that the crust forms at high-density region ($ρ\sim10^{14}$ g cm$^{-3}$) and it would proceed f…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a class of hypothetical pseudoscalar particles which feebly interact with ordinary matter. The hot plasma of core-collapse supernovae is a possible laboratory to explore physics beyond the standard model including ALPs. Once produced, some of the ALPs can be absorbed by the supernova matter and affect energy transfer. In this study, we calculate the ALP emission in core-collapse supernovae and the backreaction on supernova dynamics consistently. It is found that the stalled bounce shock can be revived if the coupling between ALPs and photons is as high as g_{ag}…
Herein, we review the nuclear equations of state (EOSs) %for core-collapse supernova simulations and the constituent nuclei of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and their roles in CCSN simulations. Various nuclei such as deuterons, iron, and extremely neutron-rich nuclei compose in the central engines of CCSNe. The center of a collapsing core is dominated by neutron-rich heavy nuclei prior to the occurrence of core bounce. Their weak interactions significantly affect the neutrino emission and the size of the produced proto-neutron star. After a core bounce, heavy nuclei are dissolved to protons…
We present analysis of neutrino and GW signals based on three-dimensional (3D) core-collapse supernova simulations of a rapidly rotating 27 $M_{\odot}$ star. We find a new neutrino signature that is produced by a lighthouse effect where the spinning of strong neutrino emission regions around the rotational axis leads to quasi-periodic modulation in the neutrino signal. Depending on the observer's viewing angle, the time modulation will be clearly detectable in IceCube and the future Hyper-Kamiokande. The GW emission is also anisotropic where the GW signal is emitted, as previously identified, …
The stationary accretion shock instability (SASI) plays a central role in modern simulations of the explosion phase of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). It may be key to realizing neutrino powered explosions, and possibly links birth properties of pulsars (e.g., kick, spin, and magnetic field) to supernova dynamics. Using high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we study the development of turbulence, and subsequent amplification of magnetic fields in a simplified model of the post-bounce core-collapse supernova environment. Turbulence develops from secondary instabilities induced by t…
We present results of new three-dimensional (3D) general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of rapidly rotating strongly magnetized core collapse. These simulations are the first of their kind and include a microphysical finite-temperature equation of state and a leakage scheme that captures the overall energetics and lepton number exchange due to postbounce neutrino emission. Our results show that the 3D dynamics of magnetorotational core-collapse supernovae are fundamentally different from what was anticipated on the basis of previous simulations in axisymmetry (2D). A strong bipol…
In this paper we study in detail the dynamics of flavor transformation for neutrinos propagating in the very dense environment of astrophysical compact objects as Type II supernova in post collapse phase and proto-neutron stars. The analysis is based on the formalism by Strack and Burrows, who introduced the generalized Boltzmann equation for Wigner phase space density. In appropriate limits the formalism reduces to the usual evolution equations for the wave functions or for density matrix elements of Liouville equation. We incorporate the most important aspects of neutrino propagation physics…
This is a status report on our endeavor to reveal the mechanism of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) by large-scale numerical simulations. Multi-dimensionality of the supernova engine, general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, energy and lepton number transport by neutrinos emitted from the forming neutron star as well as nuclear interactions there, are all believed to play crucial roles in repelling infalling matter and producing energetic explosions. These ingredients are nonlinearly coupled with one another in the dynamics of core-collapse, bounce, and shock expansion. Serious quantitative …
We have made core-collapse supernova simulations that allow oscillations between electron neutrinos (or their anti particles) with right-handed sterile neutrinos. We have considered a range of mixing angles and sterile neutrino masses including those consistent with sterile neutrinos as a dark matter candidate. We examine whether such oscillations can impact the core bounce and shock reheating in supernovae. We identify the optimum ranges of mixing angles and masses that can dramatically enhance the supernova explosion by efficiently transporting electron anti-neutrinos from the core to behind…
Core collapse supernova simulations can be sensitive to neutrino interactions near the neutrinosphere. This is the surface of last scattering. We model the neutrinosphere region as a warm unitary gas of neutrons. A unitary gas is a low density system of particles with large scattering lengths. We calculate modifications to neutrino scattering cross sections because of the universal spin and density correlations of a unitary gas. These correlations can be studied in laboratory cold atom experiments. We find significant reductions in cross sections, compared to free space interactions, even at r…
We investigate $r$-process nucleosynthesis in three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of jet-driven supernovae resulting from rapidly rotating, strongly magnetized core-collapse. We explore the effect of misaligning the pre-collapse magnetic field with respect to the rotation axis by performing four simulations: one aligned model and models with 15, 30, and 45 degree misalignments. The simulations we present employ a microphysical finite-temperature equation of state and a leakage scheme that captures the overall energetics and lepton number exchange due to post-…
Understanding gravitational wave emission from core-collapse supernovae will be essential for their detection with current and future gravitational wave detectors. This requires a sample of waveforms from modern 3D supernova simulations reaching well into the explosion phase, where gravitational wave emission is expected to peak. However, recent waveforms from 3D simulations with multi-group neutrino transport do not reach far into the explosion phase, and some are still obtained from non-exploding models. We therefore calculate waveforms up to 0.9\,s after bounce using the neutrino hydrodynam…
In this study, we conduct three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations systematically to investigate the flow patterns behind the accretion shock waves that are commonly formed in the post-bounce phase of core-collapse supernovae. Adding small perturbations to spherically symmetric, steady, shocked accretion flows, we compute the subsequent evolutions to find what flow pattern emerges as a consequence of hydrodynamical instabilities such as convection and standing accretion shock instability (SASI) for different neutrino luminosities and mass accretion rates. Depending on these two controlling p…
Massive stars can explode as supernovae at the end of their life cycle, releasing neutrinos whose total energy reaches $10^{53}$ erg. Moreover, neutrinos play key roles in supernovae, heating and reviving the shock wave as well as cooling the resulting protoneutron star. Therefore, neutrino detectors are waiting to observe the next galactic supernova and several theoretical simulations of supernova neutrinos are underway. While these simulation concentrate mainly on only the first one second after the supernova bounce, the only observation of a supernova with neutrinos, SN 1987A, revealed that…
We study the three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics of the post-core-bounce phase of the collapse of a 27-solar-mass star and pay special attention to the development of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI) and neutrino-driven convection. To this end, we perform 3D general-relativistic simulations with a 3-species neutrino leakage scheme. The leakage scheme captures the essential aspects of neutrino cooling, heating, and lepton number exchange as predicted by radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. The 27-solar-mass progenitor was studied in 2D by B. Mueller et al. (ApJ 761:72, 2012), wh…
