The present article investigates the impact of muons on core-collapse supernovae, with particular focus on the early muon neutrino emission. While the presence of muons is well understood in the context of neutron stars, until the recent study by Bollig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 242702 (2017)] the role of muons in core-collapse supernovae had been neglected--electrons and neutrinos were the only leptons considered. In their study, Bollig et al. disentangled the muon and tau neutrinos and antineutrinos and included a variety of muonic weak reactions, all of which the present paper follows closely. Only then does it becomes possible to quantify the appearance of muons shortly before stellar core bounce and how the post-bounce prompt neutrino emission is modified
We have explored the impact of sterile neutrino dark matter on core-collapse supernova explosions. We have included oscillations between electron neutrinos or mixed $μ,τ$ neutrinos and right-handed sterile neutrinos into a supernova model. We have chosen sterile neutrino masses and mixing angles that are consistent with sterile neutrino dark matter candidates as indicated by recent x-ray flux measurements. Using these simulations, we have explored the impact of sterile neutrinos on the core bounce and shock reheating. We find that, for ranges of sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle consisten…

We discuss the possible impact of strange quark matter on the evolution of core-collapse supernovae with emphasis on low critical densities for the quark-hadron phase transition. For such cases the hot proto-neutron star can collapse to a more compact hybrid star configuration hundreds of milliseconds after core-bounce. The collapse triggers the formation of a second shock wave. The latter leads to a successful supernova explosion and leaves an imprint on the neutrino signal. These dynamical features are discussed with respect to their compatibility with recent neutron star mass measurements w…
Supernovae are Nature's high-energy, high density laboratory experiments, reaching densities in excess of nuclear densities and temperatures above 10MeV. Astronomers have built up a suite of diagnostics to study these supernovae. If we can utilize these diagnostics, and tie them together with a theoretical understanding of supernova physics, we can use these cosmic explosions to study the nature of matter at these extreme densities and temperatures. Capitalizing on these diagnostics will require understanding a wide range of additional physics. Here we review the diagnostics and the physics ne…
We explain the early excess emission of the Type Ia supernova 2018oh by an interaction of the supernova ejecta with disk-originated matter (DOM). Such DOM can form in the merger process of two white dwarfs (WDs) in the double degenerate scenario of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We find that an ejecta-DOM interaction can fit the early light curve of SN 2018oh better than an ejecta-companion interaction in the single degenerate scenario. By composing the DOM from two components that were ejected in the merger process with two different velocities, we show that the ejecta-DOM interaction can accou…
We show that the blue and UV excess emission at the first few days of some type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can be accounted for in the double degenerate (DD) scenario by the collision of the SN ejecta with circumstellar matter that was blown by the accretion disk formed during the merger process of the two white dwarfs (WDs). We assume that in cases of excess early light the disk blows the circumstellar matter, that we term disk-originated matter (DOM), hours to days before explosion. To perform our analysis we first provide a model-based definition for early excess light, replacing the definition…
We carry out 3D-hydrodynamical calculations for the interaction of expanding supernova ejecta with the dense circumstellar matter (CSM) and the rarefied interstellar medium (ISM) outside. The CSM is composed of the stellar wind matter from the progenitor in its pre-supernova phase, and assumed to be axially symmetric: more matter around the equator than in the polar direction driven by rotation of the progenitor. Because of high density of the CSM, the ionization state of the shock-heated ejecta quickly becomes equilibrium with the electron temperature. When the blast wave breaks out of the CS…
We explore the impact of magnetic field on neutrino-matter interactions in core-collapse supernova. We first derive the modified source terms for neutrino-nucleon scattering and neutrino absorption and emission processes in the moment formalism. Then we perform full relativistic three-dimensional, magnetorotational core-collapse supernova simulations of a 20 $M_\odot$ star with spectral neutrino transport. Our simulations treat self-consistently the parity violation effects of weak interaction in the presence of external magnetic field. The result shows a significant global asymmetry, mostly c…
Recent supernova searches revealed a number of fast-evolving luminous transients. We perform radiation hydrodynamic simulations of light curves of several models of supernova from super--asymptotic giant branch (super-AGB, SAGB) stars with low mass envelopes ($M_{\rm env}$ $\sim$ $0.05-1.25$ $M_{\odot}$). The differences in the light curves found among the models are used to link the observed events to the most appropriate models. In particular, we propose that KSN 2015K is an electron-capture supernova. We assume "optically" thick CSM around SAGB and the circumstellar interaction powers the p…
We calculate synchrotron radio emission and gamma-ray emission due to bremsstrahlung, inverse-Compton scattering and $pi^0$-decay from the remnant of supernova which exploded in the circumstellar matter (CSM) formed by the progenitor's stellar wind. This sort of situation is a possible origin of mixed-morphology supernova remnants (SNRs) like W49B, which exhibit recombination-radiation spectra in X-ray emission. We assume that the CSM of 1.5 $M_{odot}$ exists at 0.07--3 pc away from the supernova in the interstellar medium (ISM) of density 0.016 cm$^{-3}$. When the blast wave breaks out of the…
Dark matter direct detection experiments have poor sensitivity to a galactic population of dark matter with mass below the GeV scale. However, such dark matter can be produced copiously in supernovae. Since this thermally-produced population is much hotter than the galactic dark matter, it can be observed with direct detection experiments. In this paper, we focus on a dark sector with fermion dark matter and a heavy dark photon as a specific example. We first extend existing supernova cooling constraints on this model to the regime of strong coupling where the dark matter becomes diffusively t…
We present simulations of thermonuclear supernovae admixed with an extended component of fermionic cold dark matter. We consider the explosion of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf using the deflagration model with deflagration-detonation transition with spherical symmetry. The dark matter component is comparable in size with that of the normal matter, and so the system is described by two-fluid, one-dimensional Eulerian hydrodynamics. The explosion leaves all the dark matter trapped as a remnant compact dark star in all of our considered models. The presence of dark matter lengthens the deflagr…
In this review article we discuss selected developments regarding the role of the equation of state (EOS) in simulations of core-collapse supernovae. There are no first-principle calculations of the state of matter under supernova conditions since a wide range of conditions is covered, in terms of density, temperature and isospin asymmetry. Instead, model EOS are commonly employed in supernova studies. These can be divided into regimes with intrinsically different degrees of freedom: heavy nuclei at low temperatures, inhomogeneous nuclear matter where light and heavy nuclei coexist together wi…
An influence of a magnetic field on beta-processes is investigated under conditions of a core-collapse supernova. For realistic magnetic fields reachable in astrophysical objects we obtain simple analytical expressions for reaction rates of beta-processes as well as the energy and momentum transferred from neutrinos and antineutrinos to the matter. Based on the results of one-dimensional simulations of a supernova explosion, we found that, in the magnetic field with the strength $B \sim 10^{15}$ G, the quantities considered are modified by a few percents only and, as a consequence, the magneti…
We summarize the impact of sterile neutrino dark matter on core-collapse supernova explosions. We explore various oscillations between electron neutrinos or mixed $μ-τ$ neutrinos and right-handed sterile neutrinos that may occur within a core-collapse supernova. In particular, we consider sterile neutrino masses and mixing angles that are consistent with sterile neutrino dark matter candidates as indicated by recent X-ray flux measurements. We find that the interpretation of the observed 3.5 keV X-ray excess as due to a decaying 7 keV sterile neutrino that comprises 100\% of the dark matter wo…
As a solution to the well-known problem that the shock wave potentially responsible for the explosion of a supernova actually tends to stall, we propose a new energy source arising from our model for dark matter. Our earlier model proposed that dark matter should consist of cm-large white dwarf-like objects kept together by a skin separating two different sorts of vacua. These dark matter balls or pearls will collect in the middle of any star throughout its lifetime. At some stage during the development of a supernova the balls will begin to take in neutrons and then other surrounding material…
It was recently demonstrated that asymmetric dark matter can ignite supernovae by collecting and collapsing inside lone sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs, and that this may be the cause of Type Ia supernovae. A ball of asymmetric dark matter accumulated inside a white dwarf and collapsing under its own weight, sheds enough gravitational potential energy through scattering with nuclei, to spark the fusion reactions that precede a Type Ia supernova explosion. In this article we elaborate on this mechanism and use it to place new bounds on interactions between nucleons and asymmetric dark matte…
We study Earth matter effect in oscillation of supernovae neutrinos. We show that detecting Earth matter effect gives an independent measurement of spectra of supernovae neutrinos, i.e. the flavor difference of the spectra of supernovae neutrinos. We study the effect of energy resolution and angular resolution of final electron or positron on detecting the signal of Earth matter effect. We show that varying the widths of energy bins in analysis can change the signal strength of Earth matter effect and the statistical fluctuation. A reasonable choice of energy bins can both suppress the statist…
Light dark matter($\simeq 1-30~\rm{MeV}$) particles pair produced in electron-positron annihilation $ e^-e^+ \stackrelγ{\longrightarrow} χ\barχ$ inside the supernova core can take away the energy released in the supernova SN1987A explosion. Working within the formalism of $q$-deformed statistics (with the average value of the supernovae core temperature(fluctuating) being $T_{SN} = 30~\rm{MeV}$) and using the Raffelt's criterion on the emissivity for any new channel $\dot{\varepsilon}(e^+ e^- \to χ\overlineχ) \le 10^{19}~{erg~g^{-1}s^{-1}}$, we find that as the deformation parameter $q$ change…
Dark Matter particles can be detected directly via their elastic scattering with nuclei. Next generation experiments can eventually find physical evidences about dark matter candidates. With this motivation in mind, we have calculated the expected signals of dark matter particles in xenon detectors. The calculations were performed by considering different masses and parameters within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Since the detectors can also detect neutrinos, we have analyzed the supernova neutrino signal including a sterile neutrino in the formalism. Using this 3+1 scheme, we mak…
We generalize our virial approach to study the neutral current neutrino response of nuclear matter at low densities. In the long-wavelength limit, the virial expansion makes model-independent predictions for neutrino-nucleon scattering rates and the density S_V and spin S_A responses. We find S_A is significantly reduced from one even at low densities. We provide a simple fit S_A^f(n,T,Y_p) of the axial response as a function of density n, temperature T and proton fraction Y_p. This fit reproduces our model independent virial results at low densities and reproduces the Burrows and Sawyer rando…
Dark matter (DM) which sufficiently heats a local region in a white dwarf will trigger runaway fusion, igniting a type Ia supernova (SN). In a companion paper, this instability was used to constrain DM heavier than $10^{16}$ GeV which ignites SN through the violent interaction of one or two individual DM particles with the stellar medium. Here we study the ignition of supernovae by the formation and self-gravitational collapse of a DM core containing many DM particles. For non-annihilating DM, such a core collapse may lead to a mini black hole that can ignite SN through the emission of Hawking…
The flow of fallback matter being shocked and repelled back by an energy deposition from a central object is discussed by using newly found self-similar solutions. We show that there exists a maximum mass accretion rate if the adiabatic index of the flow is less than or equal to 4/3. Otherwise we can find a solution with an arbitrarily large accretion rate by appropriately shrinking the energy deposition region. Applying the self-similar solution to supernova fallback, we discuss how the fate of newborn pulsars or magnetars depends on the fallback accretion and their spin-down power. Combining…
We compare two classes of hybrid equations of state with a hadron-to-quark matter phase transition in their application to core collapse supernova simulations. The first one uses the quark bag model and describes the transition to three-flavor quark matter at low critical densities. The second one employs a Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model with parameters describing a phase transition to two-flavor quark matter at higher critical densities. These models possess a distinctly different temperature dependence of their transition densities which turns out to be crucial for th…
A light hidden gauge boson with kinetic mixing with the usual photon is a popular setup in theories of dark matter. The supernova cooling via radiating the hidden boson is known to put an important constraint on the mixing. I consider the possible role dark matter, which under reasonable assumptions naturally exists inside supernova, can play in the cooling picture. Because the interaction between the hidden gauge boson and DM is likely unsuppressed, even a small number of dark matter compared to protons inside the supernova could dramatically shorten the free streaming length of the hidden bo…
Dark matter is believed to be a major component of our universe. In this paper we propose a new mechanism based on dark matter inspired super-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf to explain the recent observation of super luminous type Ia supernovae explosions. Our calculation shows when a white dwarf accretes enough dark matter, due to the Pauli exclusive principle between fermionic dark matter particles, the mass of corresponding dark white dwarf (which means the white dwarf mixed with dark matters) can significantly exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit. Moreover, we investigate some physical observabl…
Some features of the physics of radiation-dominated shock waves are discussed with emphasis on the peculiarities which are important for correct numerical modeling of shock breakouts in supernova. With account of those peculiarities, a number of models for different supernova types is constructed based on multigroup radiation transfer coupled to hydrodynamics. We describe the implementation of a new algorithm RADA, designed for modeling photon transfer at extremely-relativistic motions of matter, into our older code STELLA. The results of numerical simulations of light curves, and continuum sp…
We study the influence of hot and dense matter in core-collapse supernovae by adopting up-to-date nuclear equation of state (EOS) based on the microscopic nuclear many-body frameworks. We explore effects of EOS based on the Dirac Brueckner Hartree-Fock theory through comparisons with those based on the variational method. We also examine effects of the differences in the composition of nuclei and nucleons by using the same EOS by the variational method but employing two different treatments in computations of nuclear abundances. We perform numerical simulations of core-collapse supernovae adop…
We investigate the emergence of hyperons in black-hole-forming failed supernovae, which are caused by the dynamical collapse of nonrotating massive stars. We perform neutrino-radiation hydrodynamical simulations in general relativity adopting realistic hyperonic equation-of-state (EOS). Attractive and repulsive cases are examined for the potential of Σ hyperons. Since hyperons soften the EOS, they shorten the time interval from the bounce to black hole formation, which corresponds to the duration of neutrino emission. This effect is larger for the attractive case than the repulsive case becaus…
Matter mixing is one important topic in the study of core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosions. In this paper, we perform two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to reproduce the high velocity $^{56}$Ni clumps observed in SN 1987A. This is the first time that large density perturbation is proposed in the CCSN progenitor to generate Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability and make the effective matter mixing. In the case of a spherical explosion, RT instability is efficient at both C+O/He and He/H interfaces of the SN progenitor. Radial coherent structures shown in perturbation patterns are important…
We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of aspherical core-collapse supernovae focusing on the matter mixing in SN 1987A. The impacts of four progenitor (pre-supernova) models and parameterized aspherical explosions are investigated. The four pre-supernova models include a blue supergiant (BSG) model based on a slow merger scenario developed recently for the progenitor of SN 1987A (Urushibata et al. 2018). The others are a BSG model based on a single star evolution and two red supergiant (RSG) models. Among the investigated explosion (simulation) models, a model with the binary m…

We revisit the rates of neutrino pair emission and absorption from nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung in supernova matter using the $T$-matrix formalism in the long-wavelength limit. Based on two-body potentials of chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), we solve the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the $T$-matrix including non-diagonal contributions. We consider final-state Pauli blocking and hence our calculations are valid for nucleons with an arbitrary degree of degeneracy. We also explore the in-medium effects on the $T$-matrix and find that they are relatively small for supernova matter. We c…
Hot matter with nucleons can be produced in the inner region of the neutrino-dominated accretion flow in gamma-ray bursts or during the proto-neutron star birth in successful supernova. The composition and equation of state of the matter depend on the dynamic $β$ equilibrium under various neutrino opacities. The strong interaction between nucleons may also play an important role. We plan to extend the previous studies by incorporating these two aspects in our model. The modification of the $β$-equilibrium condition from neutrino optically thin to thick has been modeled by an equilibrium factor…
Optical polarimetry is an effective way of probing the environment of supernova for dust. We acquired linear HST ACS/WFC polarimetry in bands $F475W$, $F606W$, and $F775W$ of the supernova (SN) 2014J in M82 at six epochs from $\sim$277 days to $\sim$1181 days after the $B$-band maximum. The polarization measured at day 277 shows conspicuous deviations from other epochs. These differences can be attributed to at least $\sim$ 10$^{-6} M_{\odot}$ of circumstellar dust located at a distance of $\sim5\times10^{17}$ cm from the SN. The scattering dust grains revealed by these observations seem to be…
We perform two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations for the thermonuclear explosion of Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs with dark matter (DM) cores in Newtonian gravity. We include a 19-isotope nuclear reaction network and make use of the pure turbulent deflagration model as the explosion mechanism in our simulations. Our numerical results show that the general properties of the explosion depend quite sensitively on the mass of the DM core M$_{\rm DM}$: a larger M$_{\rm DM}$ generally leads to a weaker explosion and a lower mass of synthesized iron-peaked elements. In particular, the total mass…
Dark matter could have a small electromagnetic charge, provided the charge-to-mass ratio is much less than that of electrons or protons. This candidate, commonly known as millicharged dark matter (mDM), would form a plasma and interact with the interstellar medium and electromagnetic fields within galaxies. In general, understanding the dynamics of mDM requires consideration of collective plasma effects. It has been proposed that mDM can be accelerated in supernova remnants, forming a dark cosmic ray population that would leave distinct experimental signatures. In this work, we study a microph…
Neutrinos produced in the hot and dense interior of the next galactic supernova would be visible at dark matter experiments in coherent elastic nuclear recoils. While studies on this channel have focused on successful core-collapse supernovae, a thermonuclear (Type Ia) explosion, or a core-collapse that fails to explode and forms a black hole, are as likely to occur as the next galactic supernova event. I show that generation-3 noble liquid-based dark matter experiments such as DARWIN and ARGO, operating at sub-keV thresholds with ionization-only signals, would distinguish between (a) leading …
We investigate the collective neutrino oscillations under the three flavor multi-angle approximation in a spherically symmetric simulation of failed supernovae. A failed supernova emits high neutrino fluxes in a short time, while intense accretion proceeds with high electron density enough to experience re-collapse into a black hole. Our results show that matter-induced effects completely dominate over neutrino self-interaction effects and multi-angle matter suppression occurs at all time snapshots we studied. These facts suggest us that only MSW resonances affect the neutrino flavor conversio…
The observation of Earth matter effects in the spectrum of neutrinos coming from a next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) could, in principle, reveal if neutrino mass ordering is normal or inverted. One of the possible ways to identify the mass ordering is through the observation of the modulations that appear in the spectrum when neutrinos travel through the Earth before they arrive at the detector. These features in the neutrino spectrum depend on two factors, the average neutrino energies, and the difference between the primary neutrino fluxes of electron and other flavors produced in…
We explain the excess of the antiproton fraction recently reported by the AMS-02 experiment by considering collisions between cosmic-ray protons accelerated by a local supernova remnant (SNR) and the surrounding dense cloud. The same "$pp$-collisions" provide the right ratio of daughter particles to fit the observed positron excess simultaneously in the natural model parameters. The supernova happened in relatively lower metalicity than the major cosmic-ray sources. The cutoff energy of electrons marks the supernova age of $\sim 10^{5}$ years, while the antiproton excess may extend to higher e…
We present a review of a broad selection of nuclear matter equations of state (EOSs) applicable in core-collapse supernova studies. The large variety of nuclear matter properties, such as the symmetry energy, which are covered by these EOSs leads to distinct outcomes in supernova simulations. Many of the currently used EOS models can be ruled out by nuclear experiments, nuclear many-body calculations, and observations of neutron stars. In particular the two classical supernova EOS describe neutron matter poorly. Nevertheless, we explore their impact in supernova simulations since they are comm…
We follow the mass expelled during the WD-WD merger process in a particular case of the Double-Degenerate (DD) scenario for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and find that the interaction of the SN ejecta with the resulting wind affects the early (first day) light curve in a way that may be in conflict with some SN Ia observations, if the detonation occurs shortly after the merger (i.e., $10^3~{\rm sec} \lesssim t_{\rm exp} \lesssim 1~{\rm day}$). The main source of the expelled mass is a disk-wind, or jets that are launched by the accretion disk around the more massive WD during the viscous phase …
We compute a new equation of state table including Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons for core collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. Nuclei and interacting nucleons in non-uniform matter is described in an extended version of the nuclear statistical equilibrium model including excluded volume effects whereas the uniform matter at higher densities is treated in the relativistic hadron field theory with density dependent couplings. The equation of state table is generated for a wide range of density ($10^{-12}$ to $\sim 1$ fm$^{-3}$), positive charge fraction (0.01 to 0…
We explore the appearance of light clusters at high densities of collapsing stellar cores. Special attention is paid to the unstable isotope H4, which was not included in previous studies. The importance of light clusters in the calculation of rates for neutrino matter interaction is discussed. The main conclusion is that thermodynamic quantities are only weakly sensitive to the chemical composition. The change in pressure and hence the direct change in collapse dynamics will be minor. But the change in neutrino heating and neutronization processes can be significant.

The future detection and measurement of the diffuse neutrino supernova background will shed light on the rate of supernovae events in the Universe, the star formation rate and the neutrino spectrum from each supernova. Little has been said about what those measurements will tell us about the expansion history of the universe. The purpose of this article is to show that the detection of the diffuse supernova neutrino background will be a complementary tool for the study and possible discrimination of cosmological models. In particular, we study three different cosmological models: the $Λ$ Cold …

The equation of state and composition of matter are calculated for conditions typical for pre-collapse and early collapse stages in core collapse supernovae. The composition is evaluated under the assumption of nuclear statistical equilibrium, when the matter is considered as an `almost' ideal gas with corrections due to thermal excitations of nuclei, to free nucleon degeneracy, and to Coulomb and surface energy corrections. The account of these corrections allows us to obtain the composition for densities a bit below the nuclear matter density. Through comparisons with the equation of state (…
The observed burst duration and energies of the neutrinos from Supernova 1987A strongly limit the possibility of any weakly-interacting light particle species being produced in the proto-neutron star (PNS) core and leading to efficient energy loss. We reexamine this constraint on Weinberg's Higgs portal model, in which the dark radiation particles (the Goldstone bosons) and the dark matter candidate (a Majorana fermion) interact with Standard Model (SM) fields solely through the mixing of the SM Higgs boson and a light Higgs boson. In order for the Goldstone bosons to freely stream out of the …
We study the influence of density-dependent symmetry energy at high densities in simulations of core-collapse supernovae, black hole formation and proto-neutron star cooling by extending the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory used for the Shen EOS table. We adopt the extended RMF theory to examine the density dependence of the symmetry energy with a small value of the slope parameter $L$, while the original properties of the symmetric nuclear matter are unchanged. In order to assess matter effects at high densities, we perform numerical simulations of gravitational collapse of massive stars …
