We study the relationship between functional inequalities for a Markov kernel on a metric space $X$ and inequalities of transportation distances on the space of probability measures $\mathcal{P}(X)$. Extending results of Luise and Savaré on Hellinger--Kantorovich contraction inequalities for the particular case of the heat semigroup on an $RCD(K,\infty)$ metric space, we show that more generally, such contraction inequalities are equivalent to reverse Poincaré inequalities. We also adapt the "dynamic dual" formulation of the Hellinger--Kantorovich distance to define a new family of divergences on $\mathcal{P}(X)$ which generalize the Rényi divergence, and we show that contraction inequalities for these divergences are equivalent to the reverse logarithmic Sobolev and Wang Harnack inequalities. We discuss applications including results on the convergence of Markov processes to equilibrium, and on quasi-invariance of heat kernel measures in finite and infinite-dimensional groups.
We discuss transportation cost inequalities for uniform measures on convex bodies, and connections with other geometric and functional inequalities. In particular, we show how transportation inequalities can be applied to the slicing problem, and give a new log-Sobolev-type inequality for bounded domains in R^n.
We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^β(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $\be\in\dR$) which lead to new concentration inequalities. These modified inequalities share common properties with usual logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as tensorisation or perturbation, and imply as well Poincaré inequality. We also study the link between these new modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities.
This work is devoted to direct mass transportation proofs of families of functional inequalities in the context of one-dimensional free probability, avoiding random matrix approximation. The inequalities include the free form of the transportation, Log-Sobolev, HWI interpolation and Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for strictly convex potentials. Sharp constants and some extended versions are put forward. The paper also addresses two versions of free Poincaré inequalities and their interpretation in terms of spectral properties of Jacobi operators. The last part establishes the corresponding inequ…
We prove the transportation inequality with the uniform norm for the laws of diffusion processes with Lipschitz and/or dissipative coefficients and apply them to some singular stochastic differential equations of interest.
We prove that for a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$, the Poincaré inequality for convex functions is equivalent to the weak transportation inequality with a quadratic-linear cost. This generalizes recent results by Gozlan et al. and Feldheim et al., concerning probability measures on the real line. The proof relies on modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities of Bobkov-Ledoux type for convex and concave functions, which are of independent interest. We also present refined concentration inequalities for general (not necessarily Lipschitz) convex functions, complementing recent results by …
We show that the quadratic transportation cost inequality $T_2$ is equivalent to both a Poincaré inequality and a strong form of the Gaussian concentration property. The main ingredient in the proof is a new family of inequalities, called modified quadratic transportation cost inequalities in the spirit of the modified logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities by Bobkov and Ledoux \cite{BL97}, that are shown to hold as soon as a Poincaré inequality is satisfied.
In this paper, one investigates the following type of transportation-information $T_cI$ inequalities: $α(T_c(ν,μ))\le I(ν|μ)$ for all probability measures $ν$ on some metric space $(\XX, d)$, where $μ$ is a given probability measure, $T_c(ν,μ)$ is the transportation cost from $ν$ to $μ$ with respect to some cost function $c(x,y)$ on $\XX^2$, $I(ν|μ)$ is the Fisher-Donsker-Varadhan information of $ν$ with respect to $μ$ and $α: [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty]$ is some left continuous increasing function. Using large deviation techniques, it is shown that $T_cI$ is equivalent to some concentration ineq…
Let $G$ be a countable discrete group with an orthogonal representation $α$ on a real Hilbert space $H$. We prove $L_p$ Poincaré inequalities for the group measure space $L_\infty(Ω_H,γ)\rtimes G$, where both the group action and the Gaussian measure space $(Ω_H, γ)$ are associated with the representation $α$. The idea of proof comes from Pisier's method on the boundedness of Riesz transform and Lust-Piquard's work on spin systems. Then we deduce a transportation type inequality from the $L_p$ Poincaré inequalities in the general noncommutative setting. This inequality is sharp up to a constan…
The aim of this paper is to show that a probability measure concentrates independently of the dimension like a gaussian measure if and only if it verifies Talagrand's $\T_2$ transportation-cost inequality. This theorem permits us to give a new and very short proof of a result of Otto and Villani. Generalizations to other types of concentration are also considered. In particular, one shows that the Poincaré inequality is equivalent to a certain form of dimension free exponential concentration. The proofs of these results rely on simple Large Deviations techniques.
In this work, we connect the problem of bounding the expected generalisation error with transportation-cost inequalities. Exposing the underlying pattern behind both approaches we are able to generalise them and go beyond Kullback-Leibler Divergences/Mutual Information and sub-Gaussian measures. In particular, we are able to provide a result showing the equivalence between two families of inequalities: one involving functionals and one involving measures. This result generalises the one proposed by Bobkov and Götze that connects transportation-cost inequalities with concentration of measure. M…
In this note we introduce and prove local and potential independent transportation, Log-Sobolev and HWI inequalities in one dimensional free probability on compact intervals which are sharp. We recover using this approach a free transportation inequality on the whole real line which was put forward recently by M. Maida and E. Maurel-Segala.
Quantum functional inequalities (e.g. the logarithmic Sobolev- and Poincaré inequalities) have found widespread application in the study of the behavior of primitive quantum Markov semigroups. The classical counterparts of these inequalities are related to each other via a so-called transportation cost inequality of order 2 (TC2). The latter inequality relies on the notion of a metric on the set of probability distributions called the Wasserstein distance of order 2. (TC2) in turn implies a transportation cost inequality of order 1 (TC1). In this paper, we introduce quantum generalizations of …
We develop the optimal transportation approach to modified log-Sobolev inequalities and to isoperimetric inequalities. Various sufficient conditions for such inequalities are given. Some of them are new even in the classical log-Sobolev case. The idea behind many of these conditions is that measures with a non-convex potential may enjoy such functional inequalities provided they have a strong integrability property that balances the lack of convexity. In addition, several known criteria are recovered in a simple unified way by transportation methods and generalized to the Riemannian setting.
We study various transport-information inequalities under three different notions of Ricci curvature in the discrete setting: the curvature-dimension condition of Bakry and Émery, the exponential curvature-dimension condition of Bauer \textit{et al.} and the coarse Ricci curvature of Ollivier. We prove that under a curvature-dimension condition or coarse Ricci curvature condition, an $L_1$ transport-information inequality holds; while under an exponential curvature-dimension condition, some weak-transport information inequalities hold. As an application, we establish a Bonnet-Meyer's theorem u…
We study coercive inequalities in Orlicz spaces associated to the probability measures on finite and infinite dimensional spaces which tails decay slower than the Gaussian ones. We provide necessary and sufficient criteria for such inequalities to hold and discuss relations between various classes of inequalities.
This paper builds upon several recent works, where semigroup proofs of Brascamp-Lieb inequalities are provided in various settings (Euclidean space, spheres and symmetric groups). Our aim is twofold. Firstly, we provide a general, unifying, framework based on Markov generators, in order to cover a variety of examples of interest going beyond previous investigations. Secondly, we put forward the combinatorial reasons for which unexpected exponents occur in these inequalities.
We study functional inequalities for Markov chains on discrete spaces with entropic Ricci curvature bounded from below. Our main results are that when curvature is non-negative, but not necessarily positive, the spectral gap, the Cheeger isoperimetric constant and the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant of the chain can be bounded from below by a constant that only depends on the diameter of the space, with respect to a suitable metric. These estimates are discrete analogues of classical results of Riemannian geometry obtained by Li and Yau, Buser and Wang.
We prove in this article the generalizations on the exponential Orlicz spaces Markov's - Bernstein's inequalities for algebraic polynomials and rational functions.
In the setting of reversible continuous-time Markov chains, the $CD_Υ$ condition has been shown recently to be a consistent analogue to the Bakry-Émery condition in the diffusive setting in terms of proving Li-Yau inequalities under a finite dimension term and proving the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality under a positive curvature bound. In this article we examine the case where both is given, a finite dimension term and a positive curvature bound. For this purpose we introduce the $CD_Υ(κ,F)$ condition, where the dimension term is expressed by a so called $CD$-function $F$. We derive f…
In this work, we discuss generalizations of the classical Bernstein and Markov type inequalities for polynomials and we present some new inequalities for the $k$th Fréchet derivative of homogeneous polynomials on real and complex $L_{p}(μ)$ spaces. We also give applications to homogeneous polynomials and symmetric multilinear mappings in $L_{p}(μ)$ spaces. Finally, Bernstein's inequality for homogeneous polynomials on both real and complex Hilbert spaces has been discussed.
Quantum Markov semigroups characterize the time evolution of an important class of open quantum systems. Studying convergence properties of such a semigroup, and determining concentration properties of its invariant state, have been the focus of much research. Quantum versions of functional inequalities (like the modified logarithmic Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities) and the so-called transportation cost inequalities, have proved to be essential for this purpose. Classical functional and transportation cost inequalities are seen to arise from a single geometric inequality, called the Ricci lo…
For a real-valued measurable function $f$ and a nonnegative, nondecreasing function $ϕ$, we first obtain a Chebyshev type inequality which provides an upper bound for $\displaystyle ϕ(λ_{1}) μ(\{x \in Ω: f(x) \geq λ_{1} \}) + \sum_{k=2}^{n}\left(ϕ(λ_{k})- ϕ(λ_{k-1})\right) μ(\{x \in Ω: f(x) \geq λ_{k}\}) ,$ where $0 < λ_1 < λ_2 \cdots λ_n < \infty$. Using this, generalizations of a few concentration inequalities such as Markov, reverse Markov, Bienaymé-Chebyshev, Cantelli and Hoeffding inequalities are obtained.
The Markov-Bernstein type inequalities between the norms of functions and of their derivatives are analysed for complex exponential polynomials. We establish a relation between the sharp constants in those inequalities and the stability problem for linear switching systems. In particular, the maximal discretization step is estimated. We prove the monotonicity of the sharp constants with respect to the exponents, provided those exponents are real. This gives asymptotically tight uniform bounds and the general form of the extremal polynomial. The case of complex exponent is left as an open probl…
This note contains some estimates for tail spaces on Hamming cube. We use analytic paraproduct operator for that purpose. We also show several types of Bernstein--Markov inequalities for Banach space valued functions on Hamming cube. Here the novelty is in getting rid of some irritating logarithms and in proving Bernstein--Markov inequalities for $|\nabla f|_X$ rather than for $Δ^{1/2} f$ for $X$ valued polynomials on Hamming cube.
