We investigate an effective model of proximity modified graphene (or symmetrylike materials) with broken time-reversal symmetry. We predict the appearance of quantum anomalous Hall phases by computing bulk band gap and Chern numbers for benchmark combinations of system parameters. Allowing for staggered exchange field enables quantum anomalous Hall effect in flat graphene with Chern number $C=1$. We explicitly show edge states in zigzag and armchair nanoribbons and explore their localization behavior. Remarkably, the combination of staggered intrinsic spin-orbit and uniform exchange coupling gives topologically protected (unlike in time-reversal systems) pseudohelical states, whose spin is opposite in opposite zigzag edges. Rotating the magnetization from out of plane to in plane makes the system trivial, allowing to control topological phase transitions. We also propose, using density functional theory, a material platform---graphene on Ising antiferromagnet MnPSe$_3$---to realize staggered exchange (pseudospin Zeeman) coupling.
We have a comparative study of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effects induced by non-magnetic and magnetic staggered potentials respectively and show that they have the same effect in driving the topological phase transition. The result implies that both time-reversal (${\cal T}$) preserving and breaking systems can host QSH effect. We also investigate the stability of the resulting QSH effect to disorder and find that for ${\cal T}$ invariant system the edge states are always robust while those of ${\cal T}$ breaking system are also robust if there is additional symmetry in the system.
Proximity effects resulting from depositing a graphene layer on a TMD substrate layer change the dynamics of the electronic states in graphene, inducing spin orbit coupling (SOC) and staggered potential effects. An effective Hamiltonian that describes different symmetry breaking terms in graphene, while preserving time reversal invariance, shows that an inverted mass band gap regime is possible. The competition of different perturbation terms causes a transition from an inverted mass phase to a staggered gap in the bilayer heterostructure, as seen in its phase diagram. A tight-binding calculat…
In this work, the investigation of magnetic proximity effect was extended to Ta which has been reported to have a negative spin Hall angle. Magnetoresistance and Hall measurements for in-plane and out-of-plane applied magnetic field sweeps were carried out at room temperature. The size of the MR ratio observed (~10-5) and its magnetization direction dependence are similar to that reported in Pt/YIG, both of which can be explained by the spin Hall magnetoresistance theory. Additionally, a flip of magnetoresistance polarity is observed at 4 K in the temperature dependent measurements, which can …
We demonstrate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single-layer graphene exchange-coupled to an atomically flat yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferromagnetic thin film. The anomalous Hall conductance has magnitude of ~0.09(2e2/h) at low temperatures and is measurable up to ~ 300 K. Our observations indicate not only proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene/YIG with large exchange interaction, but also enhanced spin-orbit coupling which is believed to be inherently weak in ideal graphene. The proximity-induced ferromagnetic order in graphene can lead to novel transport phenomena such as the quanti…
Quantum anomalous Hall effect(QAHE) can only be realized at extremely low temperatures in magnetically doped topological insulators(TIs) due to limitations inherent with the doping precess. In an effort to boost the quantization temperature of QAHE, magnetic proximity effect in magnetic insulator/TI heterostructures has been extensively investigated. However, the observed anomalous Hall resistance has never been more than several Ohms, presumably owing to the interfacial disorders caused by the structural and chemical mismatch. Here, we show that, by growing (BixSb1-x)2Te3(BST) thin films on s…
We study electric transport along an integer quantum Hall edge where the proximity effect is induced due to a coupling to a superconductor. Such an edge exhibits two Majorana-Weyl fermions with different group velocities set by the induced superconducting pairing. We show that this structure of the spectrum results in interference fringes that can be observed in both the two-terminal conductance and shot noise. We develop a complete analytical theory of such fringes for an arbitrary smooth profile of the induced pairing.
The intrinsic spin Hall effect plays an important role in spintronics applications, such as spin-orbit torque-based memory. The bulk space group symmetry determines the form of the bulk spin current conductivity tensor. This paper considers materials for which the local point group symmetry of individual atoms is lower than the global (bulk) symmetry. This enables a position-dependent spin current response, with additional tensor components allowed relative to the bulk response. We present a general method to compute the position-dependent intrinsic spin Hall conductivity, with similar computa…
We propose realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect by proximity coupling graphene to an antiferromagnetic insulator that provides both broken time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate our idea by performing ab initio calculations for graphene adsorbed on the (111) surface of BiFeO3. In this case, we find that the proximity-induced exchange field in graphene is about 70 meV, and that a topologically nontrivial band gap is opened by Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The size of the gap depends on the separation between the graphene and the thin film substrate, which can be tune…
Quantum anomalous Hall state is expected to emerge in Dirac electron systems such as graphene under both sufficiently strong exchange and spin-orbit interactions. In pristine graphene, neither interaction exists; however, both interactions can be acquired by coupling graphene to a magnetic insulator (MI) as revealed by the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we show enhanced magnetic proximity coupling by sandwiching graphene between a ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) which also serves as a top gate dielectric. By sweeping the top-gate voltage, we o…
Bilayer quantum Hall states support a flow of nearly dissipationless staggered current which can only decay through collective channels. We study the dominant finite-temperature dissipation mechanism which in narrow bars is driven by thermal nucleation of pseudospin solitons. We find the finite-temperature resistivity, predict the resulting staggered current-voltage characteristics, and calculate the associated zero-temperature critical staggered current and gate voltage.
We investigate the superconducting proximity effect through graphene in the long diffusive junction limit, at low and high magnetic field. The interface quality and sample phase coherence lead to a zero resistance state at low temperature, zero magnetic field, and high doping. We find a striking suppression of the critical current near graphene\rq{}s charge neutrality point, which we attribute to specular reflexion of Andreev pairs at the interface of charge puddles. This type of reflexion, specific to the Dirac band structure, had up to now remained elusive. At high magnetic field the use of …
Realizations of some topological phases in two-dimensional systems rely on the challenge of jointly incorporating spin-orbit and magnetic exchange interactions. Here, we predict the formation and control of a fully valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect in bilayer graphene, by separately imprinting spin-orbit and magnetic proximity effects in different layers. This results in varying spin splittings for the conduction and valence bands, which gives rise to a topological gap at a single Dirac cone. The topological phase can be controlled by a gate voltage and switched between valleys by…
We investigate the transport properties in a zigzag silicene nanoribbon in the presence of an external electric field. The staggered sublattice potential and two kinds of Rashba spin-orbit couplings can be induced by the external electric field due to the buckled structure of the silicene. A bulk gap is opened by the staggered potential and gapless edge states appear in the gap by tuning the two kinds of Rashba spin-orbit couplings properly. Furthermore, the gapless edge states are spin-filtered and are insensitive to the non-magnetic disorder. These results prove that the quantum spin Hall ef…
Chiral topological superconductors are expected to appear as intermediate states when a quantum anomalous Hall system is proximity coupled to an s-wave superconductor and the magnetization direction is reversed. In this paper we address the edge state properties of ordinary quantum Hall systems proximity coupled to s-wave superconductors, accounting explicitly for Landau quantization. We find that the appearance of topological superconducting phases with an odd number of Majorana edge modes is dependent on the structure of the system's vortex lattice. More precisely, vortex lattices containing…
Spin, anomalous, and valley Hall effects in graphene-based hybrid structures are studied theoretically within the Green function formalism and linear response theory. Two different types of hybrid systems are considered in detail: (i) graphene/boron nitride/cobalt(nickel), and (ii) graphene/YIG. The main interest is focused on the proximity-induced exchange interaction between graphene and magnetic substrate and on the proximity-enhanced spin-orbit coupling. The proximity effects are shown to have a significant influence on the electronic and spin transport properties of graphene. To find the …
We argue that by inducing superconductivity in graphene via the proximity effect, it is possible to observes the "quantum valley Hall effect". In the presence of magnetic field, supercurrent causes "valley pseudospin" to accumulate at the edges of the superconducting strip. This, and the structure of the superconducting vortex core, provide possibilities to experimentally observe aspects of the "deconfined quantum criticality".
In a heterostructure of graphene and the ferromagnetic insulator EuO, the Eu atoms induce proximity exchange and inter-valley interactions in the graphene layer. Constrained by the lattice symmetries, and guided by ab initio calculations, a model Hamiltonian is constructed that describes the low-energy bands. Band parameters such as proximity induced exchange splitting, spin orbit coupling, and inter-valley interaction are determined. Calculations of the Chern number identify the conditions under which the hetero-structures exhibit topologically non-trivial bands that give rise to the quantum …
We consider theoretically staggered honeycomb lattices for photons which can be viewed as photonic analogs of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayers. We propose a simple realization of a photonic Quantum Valley Hall effect (QVHE) at the interface between two TMD analogs with opposite staggering on each side. This results in the formation of valley-polarized propagating modes whose existence relies on the difference between the valley Chern numbers, which is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. We show that the magnitude of the photonic spin-orbit coupling based on the energy sp…
We investigate the magneto-transport properties of electrons on a square lattice under a magnetic field with the alternate flux strength $ϕ\pmΔϕ$ in neighboring plaquettes. A new peculiar behavior of the Hall conductance has been found and is robust against weak disorder: if $ϕ={p\over{2N}}\times{2π}$ ($p$ and $2N$ are coprime integers) is fixed, the Chern numbers of Landau subbands will be redistributed between neighboring pairs and hence the total quantized Hall conductance exhibits a direct transition by $\pm{N}e^2/h$ at critical fillings when $Δϕ$ is increased from 0 up to a critical value…
In this paper we investigate the occurrence of quantum phase transitions in topological systems out of equi- librium. More specifically, we consider graphene with a sizable spin-orbit coupling, irradiated by circularly- polarized light. In the absence of light, the spin-orbit coupling drives a quantum spin Hall phase where edge currents with opposite spins counter-propagate. On the other hand, the light generates a time-dependent vector potential, which leads to a hopping parameter with staggered time-dependent phases around the benzene ring. The model is a dynamical version of the Haldane mod…
Compared to monolayer graphene, electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) have an additional layer degree of freedom, offering a platform for developing {\it layered spintronics} with the help of proximity-induced magnetism. Based on an effective phenomenological model, we systematically study the effect of this magnetism on the spin-dependent band structure near the Fermi energy and identify the magnetic phases induced in BLG by proximity with magnets. We show that spin polarization can develop in BLG due to this proximity effect. This spin polarization depends strongly on the layer …
Anomalous Hall-like signals in platinum in contact with magnetic insulators are common observations that could be explained by either proximity magnetization or spin Hall magnetoresistance. In this work, longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances are measured in a pure gold thin film on the ferrimagnetic insulator Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG). We show that both the longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances have quantitatively consistent scaling in YIG/Au and in a YIG/Pt reference system when applying the Spin Hall magnetoresistance framework. No contribution of an an…
Tunnelling of electrons in graphene-based junctions is studied theoretically. Graphene is assumed to be deposited either directly on a ferromagnetic insulator or on a few atomic layers of boron nitride which separate graphene from a metallic ferromagnetic substrate. Such junctions can be formed by appropriate external gating of the corresponding system. To describe low-energy electronic states near the Dirac points, certain effective Hamiltonians available in the relevant literature are used. These Hamiltonians include staggered potential and exchange interaction due to ferromagnetic substrate…
We report anisotropic magnetoresistance in Pt|Y3Fe5O12 bilayers. In spite of Y3Fe5O12 being a very good electrical insulator, the resistance of the Pt layer reflects its magnetization direction. The effect persists even when a Cu layer is inserted between Pt and Y3Fe5O12, excluding the contribution of induced equilibrium magnetization at the interface. Instead, we show that the effect originates from concerted actions of the direct and inverse spin Hall effects and therefore call it "spin Hall magnetoresistance."
A van der Waals heterostructure combined with intrinsic magnetism and topological orders have recently paved attractive avenues to realize quantum anomalous Hall effects. In this work, using first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that the robust quantum anomalous Hall states with sizable band gaps emerge in the van der Waals heterostructure of germanene/Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. This heterostructure possesses high thermodynamic stability, thus facilitating its experimental fabrication. Furthermore, we uncover that the proximity effect enhances the coupling between the…
We study the anomalous Hall-like effect (AHLE) and the effective anisotropic magnetoresistance (EAMR) in antiferromagnetic γ -IrMn3/Y3Fe5O12(YIG) and Pt/YIG heterostructures. For γ -IrMn3/YIG, the EAMR and the AHLE resistivity change sign with temperature due to the competition between the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) induced by the interfacial antiferromagnetic uncompensated magnetic moment. In contrast, for Pt/YIG the AHLE resistivity changes sign with temperature whereas no sign change is observed in the EAMR. This is because the MPE and the SMR …
We study the anomalous Hall effect in monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides 2H-$MX_2$ ($M$=Mo, W, and $X$=S, Se, Te) under a proximity effect of ferromagnetic substrate. If a proximity-induced exchange field is introduced, the spin-polarized energy bands in $K$ and $K'$ valleys are shifted in the opposite directions, and it causes the Hall effect by breaking time-reversal symmetry. The induced Hall effect is the most prominent in the valence band which has a large intrinsic spin splitting. Moreover, we find that tilting the magnetization from the perpendicular direction gives rise to …
Graphene properties can be manipulated by a periodic potential. Based on the tight-binding model, we study graphene under a one-dimensional (1D) modulated magnetic field which contains both a uniform and a staggered component. New chiral current-carrying edge states are generated at the interfaces where the staggered component changes direction. These edge states lead to an unusual integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene, which can be observed experimentally by a standard four-terminal Hall measurement. When Zeeman spin splitting is considered, a novel state is predicted where the electr…
Graphene is an excellent material for long distance spin transport but allows little spin manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides imprint their strong spin-orbit coupling into graphene via proximity effect, and it has been predicted that efficient spin-to-charge conversion due to spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein effects could be achieved. Here, by combining Hall probes with ferromagnetic electrodes, we unambiguously demonstrate experimentally spin Hall effect in graphene induced by MoS$_2$ proximity and for varying temperature up to room temperature. The fact that spin transport and spin …
We investigate topological properties of models that describe graphene on realistic substrates which induce proximity spin-orbit coupling in graphene. A $\mathbb{Z}_2$ phase diagram is calculated for the parameter space of (generally different) intrinsic spin-orbit coupling on the two graphene sublattices, in the presence of Rashba coupling. The most fascinating case is that of staggered intrinsic spin-orbit coupling which, despite being topologically trivial, $\mathbb{Z}_2 = 0$, does exhibit edge states protected against time-reversal scattering for zigzag ribbons as wide as micrometers. We c…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is an exotic quantum phenomenon originating from dissipation-less chiral channels at the sample edge. While the QAHE has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs), exploiting magnetic proximity effect on the TI surface from adjacent ferromagnet layers may provide an alternative approach to the QAHE by opening an exchange gap with less disorder than that in the doped system. Nevertheless, the engineering of a favorable heterointerface that realizes the QAHE based on the magnetic proximity effect remains to be achieved. Here, we rep…
The quantum entanglement between two qubits is crucial for applications in the quantum communication. After the entanglement of photons was experimentally realized, much effort has been taken to exploit the entangled electrons in solid-state systems. Here, we propose a Cooper-pair splitter, which can generate spatially-separated but entangled electrons, in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator proximity-coupled with a superconductor. After coupling with a superconductor, the chiral edge states of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator can still survive, making the backscattering impossible. Thus, t…
We study self-consistently a microscopic interface between a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) and a superconductor (SC), focusing on properties related to Majorana fermion creation. For an $s$-wave SC we show that odd-in-momentum, or $p$-wave, order parameters exist for all doping levels of the QSHI and that they can be related to different spinless Cooper pair amplitudes. Despite this, the induced superconducting gap in the QSHI always retains its $s$-wave character, validating the commonly used effective model for superconductivity in a topological insulator. For a $d_{xy}$-wave SC, we sho…
We study the quantum anomalous Hall effect described by a class of two-component Haldane models on square lattices. We show that the latter can be transformed into a pseudospin triplet p+ip-wave paired superfluid. In the long wave length limit, the ground state wave function is described by Halperin's (1,1,-1) state of neutral fermions analogous to the double layer quantum Hall effect. The vortex excitations are charge e/2 abelian anyons which carry a neutral Dirac fermion zero mode. The superconducting proximity effect induces `tunneling' between `layers' which leads to topological phase tran…
We study a two-terminal graphene Josephson junction with contacts shaped to form a narrow constriction, less than 100nm in length. The contacts are made from type II superconducting contacts and able to withstand magnetic fields high enough to reach the quantum Hall (QH) regime in graphene. In this regime, the device conductance is determined by edge states, plus the contribution from the constricted region. In particular, the constriction area can support supercurrents up to fields of ~2.5T. Moreover, enhanced conductance is observed through a wide range of magnetic fields and gate voltages. …
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) state was recently demonstrated in monolayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T'-WTe$_2$ and is characterized by a band gap in the two-dimensional (2D) interior and helical one-dimensional (1D) edge states. Inducing superconductivity in the helical edge states would result in a 1D topological superconductor, a highly sought-after state of matter. In the present study, we use a novel dry-transfer flip technique to place atomically-thin layers of WTe$_2$ on a van der Waals superconductor, NbSe$_2$. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS)…
Graphene is the first model system of two-dimensional topological insulator (TI), also known as quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. The QSH effect in graphene, however, has eluded direct experimental detection because of its extremely small energy gap due to the weak spin-orbit coupling. Here we predict by ab initio calculations a giant (three orders of magnitude) proximity induced enhancement of the TI energy gap in the graphene layer that is sandwiched between thin slabs of Sb2Te3 (or MoTe2). This gap (1.5 meV) is accessible by existing experimental techniques, and it can be further enhanced …

The recent synthesis of two-dimensional staggered materials opens up burgeoning opportunities to study optical spin-orbit interactions in semiconducting Dirac-like systems. We unveil topological phase transitions in the photonic spin Hall effect in the graphene family materials. It is shown that an external static electric field and a high frequency circularly polarized laser allow for active on-demand manipulation of electromagnetic beam shifts. The spin Hall effect of light presents a rich dependence with radiation degrees of freedom, material properties, and features non-trivial topological…
Graphene on an insulating ferromagnetic substrate---ferromagnetic insulator or ferromagnetic metal with a tunnel barrier---is expected to exhibit giant proximity exchange and spin-orbit couplings. We use a realistic transport model of charge-disorder scattering and solve the linearized Boltzmann equation numerically exactly for the anisotropic Fermi contours of modified Dirac electrons to find magnetotransport signatures of these proximity effects: proximity anisotropic magnetoresistance, inverse spin-galvanic effect, and the planar Hall resistivity. We establish the corresponding anisotropies…
We propose a topological understanding of the quantum spin Hall state without considering any symmetries, and it follows from the gauge invariance that either the energy gap or the spin spectrum gap needs to close on the system edges, the former scenario generally resulting in counterpropagating gapless edge states. Based upon the Kane-Mele model with a uniform exchange field and a sublattice staggered confining potential near the sample boundaries, we demonstrate the existence of such gapless edge states and their robust properties in the presence of impurities. These gapless edge states are …
The extreme versatility of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials derives from their ability to exhibit new electronic properties when assembled in proximity with dissimilar crystals. For example, although graphene is inherently non-magnetic, recent work has reported a magnetic proximity effect in graphene interfaced with magnetic substrates, potentially enabling a pathway towards achieving a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and chromium trihalide magnetic insulators (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$, and CrCl$_3$). Surprisingly, we are …
Graphene has remarkable opportunities for spintronics due to its high mobility and long spin diffusion length, especially when encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Here, for the first time, we demonstrate gate-tunable spin transport in such encapsulated graphene-based spin valves with one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic edge contacts. An electrostatic backgate tunes the Fermi level of graphene to probe different energy levels of the spin-polarized density of states (DOS) of the 1D ferromagnetic contact, which interact through a magnetic proximity effect (MPE) that induces ferromagnet…
The search of novel topological phases, such as the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) or the axion insulator, has motivated different schemes to introduce magnetism into topological insulators. One scheme is to introduce ferromagnetic dopants in topological insulators. However, it is generally challenging and requires carefully engineered growth/heterostructures or relatively low temperatures to observe the QAHI due to issues such as the added disorder with ferromagnetic dopants. Another promising scheme is using the magnetic proximity effect with a magnetic insulator to magnetize the to…
The proximity-induced couplings in graphene due to the vicinity of a ferromagnetic insulator are analyzed. We combine general symmetry principles and simple tight-binding descriptions to consider different orientations of the magnetization. We find that, in addition to a simple exchange field, a number of other terms arise. Some of these terms act as magnetic orbital couplings, and others are proximity-induced spin-orbit interactions. The couplings are of similar order of magnitude, and depend on the orientation of the magnetization. A variety of phases, and anomalous Hall effect regimes, are …
Proximity orbital and spin-orbital effects of graphene on monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are investigated from first-principles. The Dirac band structure of graphene is found to lie within the semiconducting gap of TMDCs for sulfides and selenides, while it merges with the valence band for tellurides. In the former case the proximity-induced staggered potential gaps and spin-orbit couplings (all on the meV scale) of the Dirac electrons are established by fitting to a phenomenological effective Hamiltonian. While graphene on MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and WS$_2$ has a topologically …
Time-reversal (T) symmetry breaking is a fundamental physics concept underpinning a broad science and technology area, including topological magnets, axion physics, dissipationless Hall currents, or spintronic memories. A best known conventional model of macroscopic T-symmetry breaking is a ferromagnetic order of itinerant Bloch electrons with an isotropic spin interaction in momentum space. Anisotropic electron interactions, on the other hand, have been a domain of correlated quantum phases, such as the T-invariant nematics or unconventional superconductors. Here we report discovery of a brok…
We consider recent experiments on wide superconductor-quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI)-superconductor Josephson junctions, which have shown preliminary evidence of proximity-induced superconductivity at the edge-modes of the QSHI system based on an approximate analysis of the observed Fraunhofer spectra of the Josephson critical current as a function of the applied magnetic field. Using a completely independent exact numerical method involving a non-linear constrained numerical optimization, we calculate the supercurrent profiles, comparing our results quantitatively with the experimental Fr…
