We prove Price's law with an explicit leading order term for solutions $ϕ(t,x)$ of the scalar wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes including subextremal Kerr black holes. Our precise asymptotics in the full forward causal cone imply in particular that $ϕ(t,x)=c t^{-3}+\mathcal O(t^{-4+})$ for bounded $|x|$, where $c\in\mathbb C$ is an explicit constant. This decay also holds along the event horizon on Kerr spacetimes and thus renders a result by Luk-Sbierski on the linear scalar instability of the Cauchy horizon unconditional. We moreover prove inverse quadratic decay of the radiation field, with explicit leading order term. We establish analogous results for scattering by stationary potentials with inverse cubic spatial decay. On the Schwarzschild spacetime, we prove pointwise $t^{-2 l-3}$ decay for waves with angular frequency at least $l$, and $t^{-2 l-4}$ decay for waves which are in addition initially static. This definitively settles Price's law for linear scalar waves in full generality.
The heart of the proof is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies. Rather than constructing its Schwartz kernel explicitly, we proceed more directly using the geometric microlocal approach to the limiting absorption principle pioneered by Melrose and recently extended to the zero energy limit by Vasy.
We obtain estimates on the rate of decay of a solution to the wave equation on a stationary spacetime that tends to Minkowski space at a rate $O(\lvert x \rvert^{-κ}),$ $κ\in (1,\infty) \backslash \mathbb{N}.$ Given suitably smooth and decaying initial data, we show a wave locally enjoys the decay rate $O(t^{-κ-2+ε})$.
It is well known that Korn inequality plays a central role in the theory of linear elasticity. In the present work we prove new asymptotically sharp Korn and Korn-like inequalities in thin curved domains with a non-constant thickness. This new results will be useful when studying the buckling of compressed shells, in particular when calculating the critical buckling load.
The purpose of this article is twofold. First we give a very robust method for proving sharp time decay estimates for the most classical three models of dispersive Partial Differential Equations, the wave, Klein-Gordon and Schr{ö}dinger equations, on curved geometries, showing under very general assumptions the exact same decay as for the Euclidean case. Then we also extend these decay properties to the case of boundary value problems.
We study the high energy estimate for the resolvent $R(λ)$ of the Laplacian on non-trapping asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds (AHM). In the literature, polynomial bound of the form $\|R(λ)\| = O(|λ|^{N})$ for $|λ|$ large and $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ in strips where $R(λ)$ is holomorphic was established for some $N > -1$. We prove the optimal bound $O(|λ|^{-1})$ under the non-positive sectional curvature assumption by taking into account the oscillatory behavior of the Schwartz kernel of the resolvent.
On a class of asymptotically conical manifolds, we prove two types of low frequency estimates for the resolvent of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The first result is a uniform $ L^2 \rightarrow L^2 $ bound for $ \langle r \rangle^{-1} (- Δ_G - z)^{-1} \langle r \rangle^{-1} $ when $ \mbox{Re}(z) $ is small, with the optimal weight $ \langle r \rangle^{-1} $. The second one is about powers of the resolvent. For any integer $N$, we prove uniform $ L^2 \rightarrow L^2 $ bounds for $ \langle εr \rangle^{-N} (-ε^{-2} Δ_G - Z)^{-N} \langle εr \rangle^{-N} $ when $ \mbox{Re}(Z) $ belongs to a compact…
We obtain the Strichartz inequalities $$ \| u \|_{L^q_t L^r_x([0,1] \times M)} \leq C \| u(0) \|_{L^2(M)}$$ for any smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ which is asymptotically conic at infinity (with either short-range or long-range metric perturbation) and non-trapping, where $u$ is a solution to the Schrödinger equation $iu_t + {1/2} Δ_M u = 0$, and $2 < q, r \leq \infty$ are admissible Strichartz exponents ($\frac{2}{q} + \frac{n}{r} = \frac{n}{2}$). This corresponds with the estimates available for Euclidean space (except for the endpoint $(q,r) = (2, \frac{2n}{n-2})$ when $n > …
We consider shells in three dimensional Euclidean space which have bounded principal curvatures. We prove Korn's interpolation (or the so called first and a half\footnote{The inequality first introduced in [6]}) and second inequalities on that kind of shells for $\Bu\in W^{1,2}$ vector fields, imposing no boundary or normalization conditions on $\Bu.$ The constants in the estimates are optimal in terms of the asymptotics in the shell thickness $h,$ having the scalings $h$ or $O(1).$ The Korn interpolation inequality reduces the problem of deriving any linear Korn type estimate for shells to si…
This work is part of a program of development of asymptotically sharp geometric rigidity estimates for thin domains. A thin domain in three dimensional Euclidean space is roughly a small neighborhood of regular enough two dimensional compact surface. We prove an asymptotically sharp geometric rigidity interpolation inequality for thin domains with little regularity. In contrast to that celebrated Friesecke-James-Müller rigidity estimate [\textit{Comm. Pure Appl. Math.,} 55(11):1461-1506, 2002] for plates, our estimate holds for any proper rotations $\BR\in SO(3).$ Namely, the estimate bounds t…
In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a $t^{-3}$ local uniform decay rate (Price's law \cite{MR0376103}) for linear waves. As a corollary, we also prove Price's law for certain small perturbations of the Kerr metric. This result was previously established by the second author in \cite{Tat} on stationary backgrounds. The present work was mo…
Suppose that $f$ is a $K$-quasiconformal ($(K,K')$-quasiconformal resp.) self-mapping of the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$, which satisfies the following: $(1)$ the inhomogeneous polyharmonic equation $Δ^{n}f=Δ(Δ^{n-1} f)=φ_{n}$ $(φ_{n}\in \mathcal{C}(\overline{\mathbb{D}}))$, (2) the boundary conditions $Δ^{n-1}f|_{\mathbb{T}}=φ_{n-1},~\ldots,~Δ^{1}f|_{\mathbb{T}}=φ_{1}$ ($φ_{j}\in\mathcal{C}(\mathbb{T})$ for $j\in\{1,\ldots,n-1\}$ and $\mathbb{T}$ denotes the unit circle), and $(3)$ $f(0)=0$, where $n\geq2$ is an integer and $K\geq1$ ($K'\geq0$ resp.). The main aim of this paper is to prove that $f…
We investigate the large-time dynamics of solutions of multi-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearities. We consider solutions which are in some sense locally persistent at large time and initial data which asymptotically oscillate around the ignition threshold. We show that, as time goes to infinity, any solution either converges uniformly in space to a constant state, or spreads with a finite speed uniformly in all directions. Furthermore, the transition between these two behaviors is sharp with respect to the period vector of the asymptotic profile of the ini…
In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a $t^{-3}$ local uniform decay rate for linear waves. This work was motivated by open problems concerning decay rates for linear waves on Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds, where such a decay rate has been conjectured by R. Price. Our results apply to both of these cases.
In this paper we verify the Strauss conjecture for semilinear wave equations on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds when n=3,4, we also give an almost sharp life span for the subcritical case $2\le p<p_c$ when n=3. The main ingredients include a KSS type estimate with $0<μ<1/2$ and weighted Strichartz estimates of order two.
We consider in this work the asymptotics of a Maxwell field in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. In any subextremal Kerr spacetime, we show energy and pointwise decay estimates for all components under an assumption of a basic energy and Morawetz estimate for spin $\pm 1$ components. If restricted to slowly rotating Kerr, we utilize the basic energy and Morawetz estimates proven in an earlier work to further improve these decay estimates such that the total power of decay for all components of Maxwell field is $-7/2$. In the end, depending on if the Newman--Penrose constant vanishes or not, w…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of blow up and sharp upper bound estimates of the lifespan for the solutions to the semilinear wave equations, posed on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. Here the metric is assumed to be exponential perturbation of the spherical symmetric, long range asymptotically Euclidean metric. One of the main ingredients in our proof is the construction of (unbounded) positive entire solutions for $Δ_{g}ϕ_λ=λ^{2}ϕ_λ$, with certain estimates which are uniform for small parameter $λ\in (0,λ_0)$. In addition, our argument works equally well for semilinear damped w…
