This work is part of a program of development of asymptotically sharp geometric rigidity estimates for thin domains. A thin domain in three dimensional Euclidean space is roughly a small neighborhood of regular enough two dimensional compact surface. We prove an asymptotically sharp geometric rigidity interpolation inequality for thin domains with little regularity. In contrast to that celebrated Friesecke-James-Müller rigidity estimate [\textit{Comm. Pure Appl. Math.,} 55(11):1461-1506, 2002] for plates, our estimate holds for any proper rotations $\BR\in SO(3).$ Namely, the estimate bounds the $L^p$ distance of the gradient of any $\By\in W^{1,p}(Ω,\mathbb R^3)$ field from any constant proper rotation $\BR\in SO(3)$, in terms of the average $L^p$ distance (nonlinear strain) of the gradient $\nabla\By$ from the rotation group $SO(3)$, and the average $L^p$ distance of the field itself from the set of rigid motions corresponding to the rotation $\BR$. There are several remarkable facts about the estimate: 1. The constants in the estimate are sharp in terms of the domain thickness scaling for any thin domains with the required regularity. 2. In the special cases when the domain has positive or negative Gaussian curvature, the inequality reduces the problem of estimating the gradient $\nabla\By$ in terms of the prototypical nonlinear strain $\int_Ω\mathrm{dist}^p(\nabla\By(x),SO(3))dx$ to the easier problem of estimating only the vector field $\By$ in terms of the nonlinear strain without any loss in the constant scalings as the Ansätze suggest. The later will be a geometric rigidity Korn-Poincaré type estimate. This passage is major progress in the thin domain rigidity problem. 3. For the borderline energy scaling (bending-to-stretching), the estimate implies improved strong compactness on the vector fields for free.
We consider a nonlocal equation set in an unbounded domain with the epigraph property. We prove symmetry, monotonicity and rigidity results. In particular, we deal with halfspaces, coercive epigraphs and epigraphs that are flat at infinity.
This paper is devoted to the Lin-Ni conjecture for a semi-linear elliptic equation with a super-linear, sub-critical nonlinearity and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We establish a new rigidity result, that is, we prove that the unique positive solution is a constant if the parameter of the problem is below an explicit bound that we relate with an optimal constant for a Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequality and also with an optimal Keller-Lieb-Thirring inequality. Our results are valid in a sub-linear regime as well. The rigidity bound is obtained by nonlinear flow meth…
For smooth surfaces properly immersed in the unit ball of $\RR^n$ with density close to one and small Willmore energy, the optimal a priori estimate(bi-Lipschitz and $W^{2,2}$ parametrization)is provided. We also discuss the quantitative rigidity for $L^2$-almost CMC surfaces.
This paper is devoted to rigidity results for some elliptic PDEs and related interpolation inequalities of Sobolev type on smooth compact connected Riemannian manifolds without boundaries. Rigidity means that the PDE has no other solution than the constant one at least when a parameter is in a certain range. This parameter can be used as an estimate for the best constant in the corresponding interpolation inequality. Our approach relies in a nonlinear flow of porous medium / fast diffusion type which gives a clear-cut interpretation of technical choices of exponents done in earlier works. We a…
This note is devoted to optimal spectral estimates for Schrödinger operators on compact connected Riemannian manifolds without boundary. These estimates are based on the use of appropriate interpolation inequalities and on some recent rigidity results for nonlinear elliptic equations on those manifolds.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be an open, bounded and Lipschitz set. We consider the torsion problem for the Laplace operator associated to $Ω$ with Robin boundary conditions. In this setting, we study the equality case in the Talenti-type comparison, proved in arXiv:1909.11950. We prove that the equality is achieved only if $Ω$ is a disk and the torsion function $u$ is radial.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an open, bounded and Lipschitz set. We consider the Poisson problem for the $p-$Laplace operator associated to $Ω$ with Robin boundary conditions. In this setting, we study the equality case in the Talenti-type comparison stated in \cite{AGM}. We prove that the equality is achieved only if $Ω$ is a ball and both the function $u$ and the right hand side $f$ of the Poisson equation are radial.
Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is $L^p$-close to the set of proper rotations is necessarily $L^p$-close to a fixed rotation, and is one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity. In several applications, as for example in the theory of plasticity, energy densities with mixed growth appear. We show here that geometric rigidity holds also in $L^p+L^q$ and in $L^{p,q}$ interpolation spaces. As a first step we prove the corresponding linear inequality, which generalizes Korn's inequality to these spaces.
This paper is devoted to sharp interpolation inequalities on the sphere and their proof using flows. The method explains some rigidity results and proves uniqueness in related semilinear elliptic equations. Nonlinear flows allow to cover the interval of exponents ranging from Poincaré to Sobolev inequality, while an intriguing limitation (an upper bound on the exponent) appears in the carré du champ method based on the heat flow. We investigate this limitation, describe a counter-example for exponents which are above the bound, and obtain improvements below.
Let $f:[0,+\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ be a (locally) Lipschitz function and $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ a $C^{1,α}$ domain whose boundary is unbounded and connected. If there exists a positive bounded solution to the overdetermined elliptic problem $$ \left\{\begin{array} {ll} Δu + f(u) = 0 & \mbox{in }\; Ω \\ u= 0\, \, \, , \, \, \, \frac{\partial u}{\partial \vecν}=1 &\mbox{on }\; \partial Ω\end{array}\right. $$ we prove that $Ω$ is a half-plane. In particular, we obtain a partial answer to a question raised by H. Berestycki, L. Caffarelli and L. Nirenberg in 1997.
This paper is devoted to an extension of rigidity results for nonlinear differential equations, based on carr{é} du champ methods, in the one-dimensional periodic case. The main result is an interpolation inequality with non-trivial explicit estimates of the constants in W1,p(S1) with p $\ge$ 2. Mostly for numerical reasons, we relate our estimates with issues concerning periodic dynamical systems. Our interpolation inequalities have a dual formulation in terms of generalized spectral estimates of Keller-Lieb-Thirring type, where the differential operator is now a p-Laplacian type operator. It…
We consider shells in three dimensional Euclidean space which have bounded principal curvatures. We prove Korn's interpolation (or the so called first and a half\footnote{The inequality first introduced in [6]}) and second inequalities on that kind of shells for $\Bu\in W^{1,2}$ vector fields, imposing no boundary or normalization conditions on $\Bu.$ The constants in the estimates are optimal in terms of the asymptotics in the shell thickness $h,$ having the scalings $h$ or $O(1).$ The Korn interpolation inequality reduces the problem of deriving any linear Korn type estimate for shells to si…
We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.
We consider shells of non-constant thickness in three dimensional Euclidean space around surfaces which have bounded principal curvatures. We derive Korn's interpolation (or the so called first and a half (The inequality first introduced in [Gra.Har.1])) and second inequalities on that kind of domains for $\Bu\in H^1$ vector fields, imposing no boundary or normalization conditions on $\Bu.$ The constants in the estimates are asymptotically optimal in terms of the domain thickness $h,$ with the leading order constant having the scaling $h$ as $h\to 0.$ This is the first work that determines the…
A full interpolation theory for Sobolev functions with smoothness between 0 and 1 and vanishing trace on a part of the boundary of an open set is established. Geometric assumptions are of mostly measure theoretic nature and reach beyond Lipschitz regular domains. Previous results were limited to regular geometric configurations or Hilbertian Sobolev spaces. Sets with porous boundary and their characteristic multipliers on smoothness spaces play a major role in the arguments.
We study second order equations and systems on non-Lipschitz domains including mixed boundary conditions. The key result is interpolation for suitable function spaces. From this, elliptic and parabolic regularity results are deduced by means of Sneiberg's isomorphism theorem.
In a bounded domain $Ω$, we consider a positive solution of the problem $Δu+f(u)=0$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is a locally Lipschitz continuous function. Under sufficient conditions on $Ω$ (for instance, if $Ω$ is convex), we show that $\partialΩ$ is contained in a spherical annulus of radii $r_i<r_e$, where $r_e-r_i\leq C\,[u_ν]_{\partialΩ}^α$ for some constants $C>0$ and $α\in (0,1]$. Here, $[u_ν]_{\partialΩ}$ is the Lipschitz seminorm on $\partialΩ$ of the normal derivative of $u$. This result improves to Hölder stability the logarithmic estimate obtain…
