We study the weak decay of the $Λ_b$ baryon into $J/ψ ϕ Λ$, a process that is particularly well suited to analyze the physics of some of the recently observed or theoretically predicted exotic hadrons, as one expects to see their signature in all three final two-body channels. In the $J/ψ\, ϕ$ invariant mass spectrum we study the interplay between the $X(4140)$ and the $X(4160)$ resonances. The $J/ψ\, Λ$ mass spectrum may help to identify the strange partner of the hidden-charm pentaquark recently observed by the LHCb collaboration, the existence of which has been predicted by a chiral unitary approach. We conclude that this strange pentaquark has a good chance of experimental detection if it is present in the range between $4450-4500$ MeV. Finally, in the $ϕ\, Λ$ spectrum we expect a contribution from a dynamically generated resonance at around $2160$ MeV, but with the present model parameters there is little chance for its experimental detection.
The observation of many unexpected states decaying into heavy quarkonia has challenged the usual QQbar interpretation. One of the most studied exotic states, the X(3872), happens to be copiously produced in high-energy hadron collisions. We discuss how this large prompt production cross-section disfavors a loosely-bound molecule interpretation for this particle. This is supported by Monte Carlo simulations, and by a comparison with extrapolated light nuclei data by ALICE.
We investigate on exotic tetraquark hadrons of the kind [cs][cbar sbar] by computing their spectrum and decay modes within a constituent diquark-antidiquark model. We also compare these predictions with the present experimental knowledge.
We study the exotic decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson ($h$) into a pair of light spin-0 particles ($ϕ$) which subsequently decays and results in a $4b$ final state. This decay mode is well motivated in the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) and extended Higgs sector models. Instead of searching at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) which are beset by large Standard Model (SM) backgrounds, we investigate this decay channel at the much cleaner Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC). With some simple selection cuts this channel …
Nucleus-nucleus collisions offer a great opportunity for analyzing and determining the intrinsic nature of heavy and exotic hadrons. In this sense, here we discuss how the production and dissociation of hadron states are affected by reactions during the expansion of hadronic matter in a heavy-ion collision environment. We give emphasis to recent works on exotic states, revisiting as a case study the time evolution of the abundances of the $X_{0,1}(2900)$ states.
The molecular picture and the constituent-quark model of exotic hadrons are reviewed, with application to the states recently discovered in the hidden-charm and hidden beauty sectors, and to other configurations.
Based on chiral dynamics, existence of exotic hadrons is discussed in the SU(3) symmetric limit. The low energy s-wave interaction of the Nambu-Goldstone boson with a hadron is known to be determined model-independently, which has been used to generate some hadron resonances in nonexotic channels. We show that this interaction in any exotic channels is not strong enough to generate a bound state.
Exotic hadrons are important because their existence or absence can provide important clues to understanding how QCD makes hadrons from quarks and gluons. The first experimentally confirmed exotic will be the first hadron containing both $qq$ and $\bar q q$ pairs and the first hadron containing color sextet and color octet pairs. Theoretical models are not very useful because there is no accepted model for multiquark systems with color-space correlations. The constituent quark model is the only phenomenological model with predictive power that has given experimentally tested universal predicti…
I classify exotic hadrons into two types, "genuine" and "hidden" exotics, and propose that the "hidden" exotics would be interpreted as "chiralons" in the ~U(12)_SF times O(3,1)_L-classification scheme of hadrons. Based upon this conjecture I investigate the mass spectrum of 1S, 1P, and 2S states for the ccbar system by use of a phenomenological mass formula with the spin-dependent interactions and present possible assignments for exotic neutral charmonium-like states which were recently discovered. It is also mentioned that some J^PC-exotic states predicted in this scheme might correspond to …
Exotic stable massive particles (SMP) are proposed in a number of scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model. It is important that LHC experiments are able to detect hadronic SMP with masses around the TeV scale. To do this, an understanding of the interactions of SMPs in matter is required. In this paper a Regge-based model of $R$-hadron scattering is extended and implemented in Geant-4.
We classify the meson and baryon long lived resonances considering quarks with electric charge 5/3 and $-4/3$ (in units of $\vert e\vert$) predicted by some 3-3-1 models. Some of these exotic resonances have the usual electric charges $0,\pm1$, others have $\pm(3,4,5)$, and the lightest ones decaying only into leptons plus known resonances. We propose another heavy $SU(3)_H$ global symmetry under which hadrons involving only exotic quarks can be constructed.
The philosophy on production of exotic hadrons (multi-quark states) in the framework of quark combination model is investigated, taking $f_0(980)$ as an example. The production rate and $p_T$ spectra of $f_0(980)$ considered as $(s\bar s)$ or $(s\bar q\bar s q)$ respectively, are calculated and compared in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200GeV$. The unitarity of various combination models, when open for exotic hadron production, is addressed.
Revisiting the QCD sum-rule description of exotic hadron states, we argue that, in order to arrive at trustable analyses of, for instance, strong decay widths of multiquarks, it is inevitable to adopt the QCD sum-rule approach beyond the leading perturbative level.
We discuss the specific features of extracting properties of the exotic polyquark hadrons (tetraquarks, pentaquarks) compared to the usual hadrons by the QCD sum-rule approach. In the case of the ordinary hadrons, already the one-loop leading-order correlation functions provide the bulk of the hadron observables, e.g., of the form factor; inclusion of radiative corrections modifies already nonzero one-loop contributions. In the case of an exotic hadron, the situation is qualitatively different: discussing strong decays of an exotic tetraquark meson, which provide the main contribution to its w…
We present the estimates of the order $O(α^{4}_{s})$ QCD corrections to $R(s)$, $R_τ$ and to the deep-inelastic scattering sum rules, namely to the non-polarized and polarized Bjorken sum rules and to the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule. The estimates are obtained in the $\overline{MS}$-scheme using the principle of minimal sensitivity and the effective charges approach.
Hadronic production of nonrelativistic boundstates of $b^{\prime}$ or isosinglet quarks D with suppressed weak decays is investigated for LHC and SSC energies. QCD corrections to production and decay rates are incorporated. Large rates for final states from $η_{b^{\prime}}\rightarrow HZ$ are predicted.
An exotic approach to hadrons is discussed. It is based on the recently developed open-closed string duality explicitly conjectured as the AdS/CFT correspondence. Mesons as well as pentaquarks are studied in this approach. Spins are introduced as distribution functions over the string, and a second quantization method of string theory is examined and used to estimate the mass and decay width of various hadrons. This approach provides a way to understand the structure of flavor by a configuration of probe branes.
The most common search channel for heavy neutral Higgses in models with an extension of the Standard Model Higgs sector is $A/H^0\rightarrow ττ$, which becomes ineffective when new decay modes of $A/H^0$ open. In this paper, we analyzed two such channels involving charged Higgses in the final states: $A/H^0 \rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp$ and $H^0 \rightarrow H^+H^-$. With the consequent decay of $H^\pm\rightarrow τν$, we found that the limits for $σ\times{BR}(gg \rightarrow A/H^0 \rightarrow W^\pm H^\mp)\times {BR}(H^\pm \rightarrow τν)$ vary from 30 to 10 fb for $m_{A/H^0}$ between 300 and 1000 GeV…
In this talk, multiquarks are studied microscopically in a standard quark model. In pure ground-state pentaquarks the short-range interaction is computed and it is shown to be repulsive, a narrow pentaquark cannot be in the groundstate. As a possible excitation, an additional quark-antiquark pair is then considered, and this is suggested to produce linear molecular system, with a narrow decay width. This excitation may be energetically favourable to the p-wave excitation suggested by the other pentaquark models. Here, the quarks assemble in three hadronic clusters, and the central hadron provi…
I report on the state of hadronic physics and spectroscopy as reflected in contributions to the HEP2005 Europhysics Conference. Topics of interest include lattice field theory calculations of the hadron spectrum, the continuing quest to account for the proton's spin, pentaquarks, high-statistics Dalitz-plot analyses, excited charmed--strange mesons, quarkonium spectroscopy, and the new levels associated with the charmonium spectrum. I also reflect on the goals of hadronic physics and assess the current state of the art.
We present predictions for the inclusive productions of the D meson originating from bottom hadrons at the CERN LHC in the general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme at next-to-leading order. We present results using two methods to describe the transition for $b\rightarrow D$: a two-step transition $b\rightarrow B \rightarrow D$, based on the $b\rightarrow B$ fragmentation functions and the spectra for $B\rightarrow D$ as measured by CLEO and a one-step transition based on the fragmentation functions for $b\rightarrow D$. The results of both approaches are compared.
We apply the diabatic formalism, an extension of the adiabatic approximation inherent to the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approach of atomic physics, to the problem of mixing between exotic multiquark hadrons and their nearby di-hadron thresholds. The unperturbed BO eigenstates are obtained using the dynamical diquark model, while the diabatic calculation introduces a mixing potential between these states and the threshold states. We solve the resulting coupled Schrödinger equations numerically for hidden-charm tetraquarks of both open and closed strangeness to obtain physical mass eigenvalues, and e…
Exotic mesons are striking predictions of quantum chromodynamics that go beyond the quark model. They can provide great insight into understanding phenomena such as asymptotic freedom, confinement, and dynamical symmetry breaking. This work analyzes hadronic decays of exotic mesons, with a focus on the lightest one, the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ $π_{1}$, in a fully relativistic formalism. The relativistic spin wave functions of normal and exotic mesons are constructed based on unitary representations of the Poincare group. The radial wave functions are obtained from phenomenological considerations of th…
Results from a model study on the formation of exotic quark clusters at the hadronization stage of a heavy ion collision are presented. The dynamical quark molecular dynamics (qMD) model which is used is sketched, and results for exotica made of up to six (anti-)quarks are shown. The second part focuses on pentaquarks. The rapidity distribution are shown, and the distribution of strangeness is found to yield an indicator of thermalization and homogenisation of the deconfined quark system. Relative Theta^+ yields are found to be lower than thermal model estimates.
Cross-section distributions are calculated for the reaction $e^+ e^- \rightarrow J/ψ\rightarrow \barΛ(\rightarrow \bar{p}π^+) Λ(\rightarrow pπ^-)$, and related annihilation reactions mediated by vector mesons. The hyperon-decay distributions depend on a number of structure functions that are bilinear in the, possibly complex, psionic form factors $G_M^ψ$ and $G_E^ψ$ of the Lambda hyperon. The relative size and relative phase of these form factors can be uniquely determined from the unpolarized joint-decay distributions of the Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons. Also the decay-asymmetry parameters…
Models of electroweak symmetry breaking with extended Higgs sectors are theoretically well motivated. In this study, we focus on the Two Higgs Doublet Model with a low energy spectrum containing scalars $H$ and a pseudoscalar $A$. We study the decays $A\rightarrow HZ$ or $H\rightarrow AZ$, which could reach sizable branching fractions in certain parameter regions. With detailed collider analysis, we obtain model independent exclusion bounds as well as discovery reach at the 14 TeV LHC for the process: $gg\rightarrow A/H\rightarrow HZ/AZ$, looking at final states bbll, ττll and ZZZ(4l2j) for l …
We examine the prospects for observing weak flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) decays of \B\ mesons at hadron colliders, including effects of anomalous $WWZ$~vertices. Since it is very difficult to measure the inclusive rate $B \rightarrow X_s \, \lp \lm$ one should consider exclusive modes such as \BKsmumu\ and \BKmumu. Even though this requires one to compute hadronic matrix elements, we show that experimentally observable quantities (ratios of decay rates) are not strongly parametrisation dependent. Some possibilities for reducing the theoretical uncertainties from other experimental d…
Limits on an exotic heavy quark $T$ are broadly generalized by considering the full range of $T\rightarrow Wb, th$ or $tZ$ branching ratios. We combine results of specific $T\rightarrow tZ$ and $T\rightarrow Wb$ searches with limits on various combinations of decay modes evaluated by re-interpreting other searches. We find strong bounds across the entire space of branching ratios, ranging from $m_T > 415$ GeV to $m_T > 557$ GeV at 95% confidence level.
We have investigated the Regge trajectories of exotic hadrons by considering different possible pentaquark configurations with finite quark mass in the flux tube model. Signifi- cant deviation is observed in the linear behavior of the Regge trajectories for pentaquark systems in view of the universal value of the Regge slope parameter for hadrons. The modified Regge trajectories are also compared with the available experimental and lat- tice data. It is observed that the non-linear Regge trajectories of such pentaqurk systems can be well described by the relativistic corrections in view of the…
The Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian model is used to calculate masses for selected J^{PC} states consisting of exotic combinations of quarks and gluons: ggg glueballs (oddballs), q bar{q} g hybrid mesons and q bar{q} q bar{q} tetraquark systems. An odderon Regge trajectory is computed for the J^{--} glueballs with intercept much smaller than the pomeron, explaining its nonobservation. The lowest 1^{-+} hybrid meson mass is found to be just above 2.2 GeV while the lightest tetraquark state mass with these exotic quantum numbers is predicted around 1.4 GeV consistent with the observed pi(1400).
The non-relativistic wave function framework is applied to study the production and decay of the exotic hadrons which can be effectively described as bound states of other hadrons. Employing the factorized formulation, we investigate the production of exotic hadrons in the multiproduction processes at high energy hadronic colliders with the help of event generators. This study provides crucial information for the measurements of the relevant exotic hadrons.
Caution is suggested on the comparison of the spin-singlet charmonium P-state with the centre of gravity of triplet states, when the mass splitting is of the order of a few MeV. The physics of new hidden-charm states X and Y is briefly reviewed. Perspectives for producing double-charm baryons and double-charm exotic mesons are discussed.
It is well known that M. Gell-Mann, introducing quarks in 1964 to describe the known mesons and baryons, hinted at the existence of further $qq\bar q\bar q$ mesons (tetraquarks) and $qqqq\bar q$ baryons (pentaquarks). In 1977, R. Jaffe proposed a model of the lightest scalar mesons as diquark-antidiquark pairs and A. de Rujula, H. Georgi and S. Glashow coined the term hadron molecules, to describe possible hadrons made by meson-antimeson pairs bound by the familiar nuclear forces, also an overall tetraquark system. The two alternative pictures have been employed to interpret the unexpected had…
New almost-degenerate charged and neutral heavy leptons are a feature of a number of theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The prospects for detecting these at the Large Hadron Collider using a time-of-flight technique are considered, along with any cosmological or experimental constraints on their masses. Based on a discovery criterion of 10 detected exotic leptons we conclude that, with an integrated luminosity of 100 fb-1, it should be possible to detect such leptons provided their masses are less than 950 GeV. It should also be possible to use the angular distribution of the produ…
In this contribution we discuss the adequate treatment of the $4-$ and $5-$body dynamics within a constituent quark framework. We stress that the variational and Born-Oppenheimer approximations give energies rather close to the exact ones, while the diquark approximation might be rather misleading. Hall-Post inequalities provide very useful lower bounds that exclude possible stable states for some mass ratios and color wave functions.
Several years ago we have proposed a manifestly covariant $\tilde{U}(12)_{SF}$-classification scheme of hadrons, which maintains the successful $SU(6)_{SF}\otimes O(3)_{L}$ framework in Non-Relativistic Quark Model and is also reconcilable with the mechanism of Spontaneously-Broken Chiral Symmetry in Relativistic Field Theoretical Models. The essential point here is to notice the overlooked freedom of the $SU(2)_ρ$-spin for (confined) light quarks, which leads to existence of new type of ``exotic'' hadrons, called ``chiralons'' and to a selection rule, $ρ_{3}$-line rule, on the spectator quark…
The nonleptonic decays of $Ξ_c^0$ and $Λ_c^+$ that are dominated by $W$-exchange are studied. In particular, we anlayse the decay modes $Ξ_c^0 \rightarrow Ξ^{*-} π^+, Σ^{*+}K^-, Ω^-K^+$ and $Λ_c^+\rightarrow Σ^0π^+, Ξ^0 K^+$, $Ξ^0_c\rightarrow Σ^+K^-$.
On the basis of existing data, we suggest such a mechanism of production for exotic hadrons that can explain, at least qualitatively, why the Theta+-baryon is seen in some experiments and not in others. With our hypothesis, production of exotic hadrons is a new kind of hard processes. We also can propose new experiments to check (and confirm?) existence of exotics and to provide new important information about both exotic and conventional hadrons [The talk is based on the papers by Ya. Azimov, K. Goeke, and I. Strakovsky, Phys Rev D 76, 074013 (2007)]
Based on the color-spin interaction in diquarks, we argue that charmed multiquark hadrons are likely to exist. Because of the appreciable number of charm quarks produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, production of charmed multiquark hadrons is expected to be enhanced in these collisions. Using both the quark coalescence model and the statistical hadronization model, we estimate the yield of charmed tetraquark meson $T_{cc}$ and pentaquark baryon $Θ_{cs}$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We further discuss the decay modes of these charmed exotic ha…
The anomalous dimensions of hadronic interpolators contain dynamical information on the properties of the associated hadron states. We point out that they provide, in particular, a link by which gauge-invariant information on exotic contributions to hadronic wavefunctionals can be obtained from approximate gravity duals for QCD. This is demonstrated by the holographic description of a dominant tetraquark component in the lightest scalar mesons.
We analyzed the invariant mass spectrum of near-threshold exotic states for one-channel candidates with a deep neural network. It can extract the scattering length and effective range, which would shed light on the nature of given states, from the experimental mass spectrum. As an application, the mass spectrum of the $X(3872)$ and the $T_{cc}^+$ are studied. The obtained scattering lengths, effective ranges, and most relevant thresholds are consistent with those from fitting to the experimental data. The advantage of the neural network is that it is more stable than the fitting, especially fo…
A selected survey is presented of the recent progress in hadron spectroscopy. This includes spin-singlet charmonium states, excitations of charmonium and open-charm mesons, double-charm baryons, and pentaquark candidates. Models proposing exotic bound states or resonances are reviewed. The sector of exotic mesons with two heavy quarks appears as particularly promising.
The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model (SM) Higgses in models with extended Higgs sectors have the potential to serve as powerful search channels to explore the space of Two-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) that cannot be studied effectively using conventional decay channels. Once kinematically allowed, heavy Higgses could decay into pairs of light non-SM Higgses, or a non-SM Higgs and a SM gauge boson, with branching fractions that dominate those of the conventional decay modes to SM particles. In this study, we focus on the prospects of probing exotic decay channels at the LHC and a future…
Exotic decays of top partners in new bosons are the norm in realistic models of a composite Higgs. We focus on the custodial charge-$5/3$ partner, which normally decays exclusively into $tW^+$. The new channels include a colour-sextet, $X_{5/3} \to \bar{b} π_6$, as well as singly and doubly charged scalars, $X_{5/3} \to t ϕ^+$, $b ϕ^{++}$. We use existing same-sign lepton searches to show that the new final states are constrained at the same level as the standard one. At the same time, exotic final states also offer opportunities for improvement: examples include a hard photon in $X_{5/3}\righ…
The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model Higgses can serve as powerful search channels to explore the parameter space of extended Higgs sectors. In this Snowmass contribution, we illustrate this using the Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) as an example. We first review the current experimental constraints on the parameter space of a Type-II 2HDM arising from existing searches for the exotic Higgs decay mode $A/H\rightarrow HZ/AZ$. We then present the sensitivity of future colliders to discover addition Higgs bosons using the exotic decay channels $A\rightarrow HZ$, $A\rightarrow H^\pm W^\mp$ …
The pair production of charged heavy leptons via two photon fusion is considered for hadron collisions at SSC and LHC energies. Rates for the inelastic process $pp \rightarrow γγX \rightarrow L^+L^-X$ and the elastic process $pp \rightarrow γγpp \rightarrow L^+L^- pp$ are given in a Weizsäcker-Williams approximation and compared with production via the gluon fusion and Drell-Yan mechanisms
We study the decay process of $J/ψ\rightarrow e^+e^- ϕ$ where the relatively clean electromagnetic (EM) transitions appear at leading order at tree level while the hadronic contributions only emerge via hadronic loop transitions. We include the low-lying scalar $f_0(980)$ and pseudoscalar $η/η'$ as the dominant contributions in the evaluation of the hadronic loop contributions. It is found that the hadronic effects are negligible comparing with the EM contributions. The decay width of $J/ψ\rightarrow e^+e^- ϕ$ is determined to be about $2.12\times 10^{-6}$ keV if there is no any other leading …
A review of QCD-based theory approaches to study the heavy-flavor and exotic hadrons is given. The focus is on the results from lattice QCD and from lattice QCD complemented by effective field theories. Both approaches are first briefly introduced and applied in few examples. Then the status of various hadrons sectors is presented.
In this paper, we study the anomalous flavor changing neutral current Yukawa interactions between the top quark, the Higgs boson, and either an up or charm quark ($\rm tqH, q=u, c$). We probe these couplings in $\rm e^- p\rightarrow ν_e \bar{t} \rightarrow ν_e H \bar{q}$ and the channel $\rm e^- p \rightarrow ν_e H b$. Both channels are induced by charged current interactions through $\rm e^- p$ collision at the Large Hadron Electron Collider(LHeC). We study the signatures with the Higgs decay modes $\rm H\rightarrow γγ, b\bar{b}$ and $τ^+τ^-$. Our results show that the flavor changing couplin…
Hadron spectroscopy represented in the past a major tool for understanding the fundamental symmetries of strong forces. More recently, the interest on this topic has been revitalized by the discovery of new quarkonium-like resonances, that do not fit in the standard picture and whose understanding could improve our mastery of quantum chromodynamics. I review here the experimental signatures of these exotic hadrons, at present and future e+e- and hadron collider experiments.
Many new exotic hadrons, that do not fit into the existing naming scheme for hadrons, have been discovered over the past few years. A new scheme is set out, extending the existing protocol, in order to provide a consistent naming convention for these newly discovered states, and other new hadrons that may be discovered in future.
