Exotic stable massive particles (SMP) are proposed in a number of scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model.
It is important that LHC experiments are able to detect hadronic SMP with masses around the TeV scale. To do this, an understanding of the interactions of SMPs in matter is required. In this paper a Regge-based model of $R$-hadron scattering is extended and implemented in Geant-4.
The observation of many unexpected states decaying into heavy quarkonia has challenged the usual QQbar interpretation. One of the most studied exotic states, the X(3872), happens to be copiously produced in high-energy hadron collisions. We discuss how this large prompt production cross-section disfavors a loosely-bound molecule interpretation for this particle. This is supported by Monte Carlo simulations, and by a comparison with extrapolated light nuclei data by ALICE.
We investigate on exotic tetraquark hadrons of the kind [cs][cbar sbar] by computing their spectrum and decay modes within a constituent diquark-antidiquark model. We also compare these predictions with the present experimental knowledge.
Nucleus-nucleus collisions offer a great opportunity for analyzing and determining the intrinsic nature of heavy and exotic hadrons. In this sense, here we discuss how the production and dissociation of hadron states are affected by reactions during the expansion of hadronic matter in a heavy-ion collision environment. We give emphasis to recent works on exotic states, revisiting as a case study the time evolution of the abundances of the $X_{0,1}(2900)$ states.
The molecular picture and the constituent-quark model of exotic hadrons are reviewed, with application to the states recently discovered in the hidden-charm and hidden beauty sectors, and to other configurations.
Based on chiral dynamics, existence of exotic hadrons is discussed in the SU(3) symmetric limit. The low energy s-wave interaction of the Nambu-Goldstone boson with a hadron is known to be determined model-independently, which has been used to generate some hadron resonances in nonexotic channels. We show that this interaction in any exotic channels is not strong enough to generate a bound state.
Exotic hadrons are important because their existence or absence can provide important clues to understanding how QCD makes hadrons from quarks and gluons. The first experimentally confirmed exotic will be the first hadron containing both $qq$ and $\bar q q$ pairs and the first hadron containing color sextet and color octet pairs. Theoretical models are not very useful because there is no accepted model for multiquark systems with color-space correlations. The constituent quark model is the only phenomenological model with predictive power that has given experimentally tested universal predicti…
I classify exotic hadrons into two types, "genuine" and "hidden" exotics, and propose that the "hidden" exotics would be interpreted as "chiralons" in the ~U(12)_SF times O(3,1)_L-classification scheme of hadrons. Based upon this conjecture I investigate the mass spectrum of 1S, 1P, and 2S states for the ccbar system by use of a phenomenological mass formula with the spin-dependent interactions and present possible assignments for exotic neutral charmonium-like states which were recently discovered. It is also mentioned that some J^PC-exotic states predicted in this scheme might correspond to …
We investigate the production, signatures and backgrounds of a pair of heavy-exotic charged leptons and a heavy-exotic neutrino together with the exotic charged lepton in the framework of the vector singlet model, vector doublet model, and fermion-mirror-fermion model, at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We still show that the cross-sections for the case of the production of a pair of heavy exotic leptons are competitive with the ones for the single production of exotic leptons.
The philosophy on production of exotic hadrons (multi-quark states) in the framework of quark combination model is investigated, taking $f_0(980)$ as an example. The production rate and $p_T$ spectra of $f_0(980)$ considered as $(s\bar s)$ or $(s\bar q\bar s q)$ respectively, are calculated and compared in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200GeV$. The unitarity of various combination models, when open for exotic hadron production, is addressed.
Revisiting the QCD sum-rule description of exotic hadron states, we argue that, in order to arrive at trustable analyses of, for instance, strong decay widths of multiquarks, it is inevitable to adopt the QCD sum-rule approach beyond the leading perturbative level.
We discuss the specific features of extracting properties of the exotic polyquark hadrons (tetraquarks, pentaquarks) compared to the usual hadrons by the QCD sum-rule approach. In the case of the ordinary hadrons, already the one-loop leading-order correlation functions provide the bulk of the hadron observables, e.g., of the form factor; inclusion of radiative corrections modifies already nonzero one-loop contributions. In the case of an exotic hadron, the situation is qualitatively different: discussing strong decays of an exotic tetraquark meson, which provide the main contribution to its w…
We investigate the production and signatures of a single, pair of heavy-exotic leptons via the electron-positron induced process and a pair of heavy exotic leptons via the Drell-Yan process at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show that the cross-section for the case of the production of heavy pair exotic leptons are competitive with the ones for the single production of exotic leptons. We also exhibit some kinematical distributions.
Hadronic production of nonrelativistic boundstates of $b^{\prime}$ or isosinglet quarks D with suppressed weak decays is investigated for LHC and SSC energies. QCD corrections to production and decay rates are incorporated. Large rates for final states from $η_{b^{\prime}}\rightarrow HZ$ are predicted.
An exotic approach to hadrons is discussed. It is based on the recently developed open-closed string duality explicitly conjectured as the AdS/CFT correspondence. Mesons as well as pentaquarks are studied in this approach. Spins are introduced as distribution functions over the string, and a second quantization method of string theory is examined and used to estimate the mass and decay width of various hadrons. This approach provides a way to understand the structure of flavor by a configuration of probe branes.
In this talk, multiquarks are studied microscopically in a standard quark model. In pure ground-state pentaquarks the short-range interaction is computed and it is shown to be repulsive, a narrow pentaquark cannot be in the groundstate. As a possible excitation, an additional quark-antiquark pair is then considered, and this is suggested to produce linear molecular system, with a narrow decay width. This excitation may be energetically favourable to the p-wave excitation suggested by the other pentaquark models. Here, the quarks assemble in three hadronic clusters, and the central hadron provi…
I report on the state of hadronic physics and spectroscopy as reflected in contributions to the HEP2005 Europhysics Conference. Topics of interest include lattice field theory calculations of the hadron spectrum, the continuing quest to account for the proton's spin, pentaquarks, high-statistics Dalitz-plot analyses, excited charmed--strange mesons, quarkonium spectroscopy, and the new levels associated with the charmonium spectrum. I also reflect on the goals of hadronic physics and assess the current state of the art.
We apply the diabatic formalism, an extension of the adiabatic approximation inherent to the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approach of atomic physics, to the problem of mixing between exotic multiquark hadrons and their nearby di-hadron thresholds. The unperturbed BO eigenstates are obtained using the dynamical diquark model, while the diabatic calculation introduces a mixing potential between these states and the threshold states. We solve the resulting coupled Schrödinger equations numerically for hidden-charm tetraquarks of both open and closed strangeness to obtain physical mass eigenvalues, and e…
Results from a model study on the formation of exotic quark clusters at the hadronization stage of a heavy ion collision are presented. The dynamical quark molecular dynamics (qMD) model which is used is sketched, and results for exotica made of up to six (anti-)quarks are shown. The second part focuses on pentaquarks. The rapidity distribution are shown, and the distribution of strangeness is found to yield an indicator of thermalization and homogenisation of the deconfined quark system. Relative Theta^+ yields are found to be lower than thermal model estimates.
We study the production and signatures of heavy exotic fermion pairs in the framework of the vector singlet model (VSM), vector doublet model (VDM) and fermion-mirror-fermion (FMF) model. We show that the pair production cross sections are competitive with the ones for the single production of exotic fermions due to the exchange of a photon in the $s$ channel and to the vector component of the $Z$ - boson coupling to exotic fermions. We also exhibit some kinematical distributions.
We have investigated the Regge trajectories of exotic hadrons by considering different possible pentaquark configurations with finite quark mass in the flux tube model. Signifi- cant deviation is observed in the linear behavior of the Regge trajectories for pentaquark systems in view of the universal value of the Regge slope parameter for hadrons. The modified Regge trajectories are also compared with the available experimental and lat- tice data. It is observed that the non-linear Regge trajectories of such pentaqurk systems can be well described by the relativistic corrections in view of the…
A systematic study of multiquark exotics with one or $N_c-1$ heavy quarks in the large $N_c$ limit is presented. By binding a chiral soliton to a heavy meson, either a normal $N_c$-quark baryon or an exotic $(N_c+2)$-quark baryon is obtained. By replacing the heavy quark with $N_c-1$ heavy antiquarks, exotic $(2N_c-2)$-quark and $2N_c$-quark mesons are obtained. When $N_c = 3$, they are just the normal triquark baryon $Qqq$, the exotic pentaquark baryon $Q\bar q\bar q\bar q\bar q$, tetraquark di-meson $\bar Q \bar Q qq$ and the hexaquark di-baryon $\bar Q \bar Q \bar q \bar q\ bar q \bar q$ re…
We study the production and signatures of heavy exotic quarks pairs at LHC in the framework of the vector singlet model (VSM), vector doublet model (VDM) and fermion-mirror-fermion (FMF) model. The pair production cross sections for the electroweak and strong sector are computed.
The Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian model is used to calculate masses for selected J^{PC} states consisting of exotic combinations of quarks and gluons: ggg glueballs (oddballs), q bar{q} g hybrid mesons and q bar{q} q bar{q} tetraquark systems. An odderon Regge trajectory is computed for the J^{--} glueballs with intercept much smaller than the pomeron, explaining its nonobservation. The lowest 1^{-+} hybrid meson mass is found to be just above 2.2 GeV while the lightest tetraquark state mass with these exotic quantum numbers is predicted around 1.4 GeV consistent with the observed pi(1400).
The non-relativistic wave function framework is applied to study the production and decay of the exotic hadrons which can be effectively described as bound states of other hadrons. Employing the factorized formulation, we investigate the production of exotic hadrons in the multiproduction processes at high energy hadronic colliders with the help of event generators. This study provides crucial information for the measurements of the relevant exotic hadrons.
Caution is suggested on the comparison of the spin-singlet charmonium P-state with the centre of gravity of triplet states, when the mass splitting is of the order of a few MeV. The physics of new hidden-charm states X and Y is briefly reviewed. Perspectives for producing double-charm baryons and double-charm exotic mesons are discussed.
We study heavy baryons with an exotic flavor quantum number formed by a heavy meson and a nucleon (Dbar-N and B-N) through a long range one pion exchange interaction. The bound state found previously in the (I,JP) =(0,1/2-) channel survives when short range interaction is included. In addition, we find a resonant state with (I,JP)=(0,3/2-) as a Feshbach resonance predominated by a heavy vector meson and a nucleon (Dbar*-N and B*-N). We find that these exotic states exist for the charm and heavier flavor region.
It is well known that M. Gell-Mann, introducing quarks in 1964 to describe the known mesons and baryons, hinted at the existence of further $qq\bar q\bar q$ mesons (tetraquarks) and $qqqq\bar q$ baryons (pentaquarks). In 1977, R. Jaffe proposed a model of the lightest scalar mesons as diquark-antidiquark pairs and A. de Rujula, H. Georgi and S. Glashow coined the term hadron molecules, to describe possible hadrons made by meson-antimeson pairs bound by the familiar nuclear forces, also an overall tetraquark system. The two alternative pictures have been employed to interpret the unexpected had…
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding $b$ and $c$ quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional interpretations of the top quark.
New almost-degenerate charged and neutral heavy leptons are a feature of a number of theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The prospects for detecting these at the Large Hadron Collider using a time-of-flight technique are considered, along with any cosmological or experimental constraints on their masses. Based on a discovery criterion of 10 detected exotic leptons we conclude that, with an integrated luminosity of 100 fb-1, it should be possible to detect such leptons provided their masses are less than 950 GeV. It should also be possible to use the angular distribution of the produ…
In this contribution we discuss the adequate treatment of the $4-$ and $5-$body dynamics within a constituent quark framework. We stress that the variational and Born-Oppenheimer approximations give energies rather close to the exact ones, while the diquark approximation might be rather misleading. Hall-Post inequalities provide very useful lower bounds that exclude possible stable states for some mass ratios and color wave functions.
We propose stable exotic nuclei bound with $\bar{D}$ and $B$ mesons with respecting heavy quark symmetry. We indicate that an approximate degeneracy of $\bar{D}$($B$) and $\bar{D}^{*}$($B^{*}$) mesons plays an important role, and discuss the stability of $\bar{D}N$ and $BN$ bound states. We find the binding energies 1.4 MeV and 9.4 MeV for each state in the $J^{P}=1/2^{-}$ with I=0 channel. We discuss also possible existence of exotic nuclei $\bar{D}NN$ and $BNN$.
Several years ago we have proposed a manifestly covariant $\tilde{U}(12)_{SF}$-classification scheme of hadrons, which maintains the successful $SU(6)_{SF}\otimes O(3)_{L}$ framework in Non-Relativistic Quark Model and is also reconcilable with the mechanism of Spontaneously-Broken Chiral Symmetry in Relativistic Field Theoretical Models. The essential point here is to notice the overlooked freedom of the $SU(2)_ρ$-spin for (confined) light quarks, which leads to existence of new type of ``exotic'' hadrons, called ``chiralons'' and to a selection rule, $ρ_{3}$-line rule, on the spectator quark…
In the large $N_c$ limit, one can describe normal heavy baryons $Qqq$ and heavy pentaquarks $\bar Qqqqq$ as bound states of heavy mesons to chiral (anti)solitons. In this picture, the strong and electromagnetic decay parameters of these hadrons can be calculated from those of the constituent heavy mesons and light baryons, while the weak decay form factors can be evaluated analytically.
On the basis of existing data, we suggest such a mechanism of production for exotic hadrons that can explain, at least qualitatively, why the Theta+-baryon is seen in some experiments and not in others. With our hypothesis, production of exotic hadrons is a new kind of hard processes. We also can propose new experiments to check (and confirm?) existence of exotics and to provide new important information about both exotic and conventional hadrons [The talk is based on the papers by Ya. Azimov, K. Goeke, and I. Strakovsky, Phys Rev D 76, 074013 (2007)]
Based on the color-spin interaction in diquarks, we argue that charmed multiquark hadrons are likely to exist. Because of the appreciable number of charm quarks produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, production of charmed multiquark hadrons is expected to be enhanced in these collisions. Using both the quark coalescence model and the statistical hadronization model, we estimate the yield of charmed tetraquark meson $T_{cc}$ and pentaquark baryon $Θ_{cs}$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We further discuss the decay modes of these charmed exotic ha…
The anomalous dimensions of hadronic interpolators contain dynamical information on the properties of the associated hadron states. We point out that they provide, in particular, a link by which gauge-invariant information on exotic contributions to hadronic wavefunctionals can be obtained from approximate gravity duals for QCD. This is demonstrated by the holographic description of a dominant tetraquark component in the lightest scalar mesons.
The potential of decays of mesons containing heavy quarks [including $B$ mesons and the $Υ(1S)$] for producing final states of matter with unusual quark configurations, such as $q q \bar q \bar q$ or $q q q q \bar q$, is investigated. The usefulness of antineutron detection in such searches is stressed.
In the large $N_c$ limit both heavy and light baryons are described by the universal mean field, which allows us to relate the properties of heavy baryons to light ones. With the only input from the decays of light octet baryons (due to the universality of the chiral mean field), excellent description of strong decays of both charm and bottom sextets is obtained. The parameter-free prediction for the widths of exotic anti-decapentaplet ($\overline{\boldsymbol{15}}$) baryons is also made. The exotic heavy baryons should be anomalously narrow despite of large phase space available. In particular…
Properties of a hypothetical baryonium with the quark content ($uds\ov{u}\ov{d}\ov{s}$) are discussed. The MIT bag model predicts its mass to be unexpectedly low, approximately 1210 MeV. Possible hadronic decay modes of this state are analyzed. Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions provide favorable conditions for the formation of such particles from the baryon-free quark-gluon plasma. We estimate multiplicities of such exotic baryonia on the basis of a simple thermal model.
We analyzed the invariant mass spectrum of near-threshold exotic states for one-channel candidates with a deep neural network. It can extract the scattering length and effective range, which would shed light on the nature of given states, from the experimental mass spectrum. As an application, the mass spectrum of the $X(3872)$ and the $T_{cc}^+$ are studied. The obtained scattering lengths, effective ranges, and most relevant thresholds are consistent with those from fitting to the experimental data. The advantage of the neural network is that it is more stable than the fitting, especially fo…
A selected survey is presented of the recent progress in hadron spectroscopy. This includes spin-singlet charmonium states, excitations of charmonium and open-charm mesons, double-charm baryons, and pentaquark candidates. Models proposing exotic bound states or resonances are reviewed. The sector of exotic mesons with two heavy quarks appears as particularly promising.
The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model (SM) Higgses in models with extended Higgs sectors have the potential to serve as powerful search channels to explore the space of Two-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) that cannot be studied effectively using conventional decay channels. Once kinematically allowed, heavy Higgses could decay into pairs of light non-SM Higgses, or a non-SM Higgs and a SM gauge boson, with branching fractions that dominate those of the conventional decay modes to SM particles. In this study, we focus on the prospects of probing exotic decay channels at the LHC and a future…
In this letter we study new relevant phenomenological consequences of the right-handed heavy neutrinos with masses at the ${\cal O}(1)$ TeV energy scale, working within the context of the Inverse Seesaw Model that includes three pairs of quasi-degenerate pseudo-Dirac heavy neutrinos. We propose a new exotic signal of these heavy neutrinos at the CERN Large Hadron Collider containing a muon, a tau lepton, and two jets in the final state, which is based on the interesting fact that this model can incorporate large Lepton Flavor Violation for specific choices of the relevant parameters, particula…
We investigate the pentaquark($P$) exotic baryons as soliton-antiflavored heavy mesons bound states in the limit of infinitely heavy meson mass. Our approach respects the chiral symmetry as well as the heavy quark symmetry. The results reveal a possibility for the loosely bound non-strange $P$-baryon(s).
We study models with heavy exotics that account for the LHC $750$ GeV diphoton excess in light of current vector-like quark bounds. Utilizing only exotics that may appear in three-stack and four-stack D-brane models, we show that a narrow width diphoton excess can be accounted for while evading existing bounds if multiple exotics are added, with vector-like leptons of mass $M_L\lesssim 375$ GeV and vector-like quarks with masses up to $\simeq 3$ TeV. However, a large width $(Γ/M \sim 0.06)$, as suggested by the ATLAS data, cannot be easily accommodated in this framework. Renormalization group …
The exclusive processes are considered, where a point-like source of heavy quark-antiquark pairs $Q \bar Q$, e.g. their electromagnetic current, produces a pair consisting of a heavy quarkoniumlike exotic meson (tetraquark) or baryon (pentaquark) and a light meson or an antibaryon. For a sufficiently large mass of the heavy quark $m_Q$ there is a range of the energy $E$ above the $Q \bar Q$ threshold, where $E \ll m_Q$ and still the energy is large compared to the strong interaction scale, $E \gg Λ_{QCD}$. It is shown that in this energy range, where the heavy quarks are nonrelelativistic, a s…
A review of QCD-based theory approaches to study the heavy-flavor and exotic hadrons is given. The focus is on the results from lattice QCD and from lattice QCD complemented by effective field theories. Both approaches are first briefly introduced and applied in few examples. Then the status of various hadrons sectors is presented.
Hadron spectroscopy represented in the past a major tool for understanding the fundamental symmetries of strong forces. More recently, the interest on this topic has been revitalized by the discovery of new quarkonium-like resonances, that do not fit in the standard picture and whose understanding could improve our mastery of quantum chromodynamics. I review here the experimental signatures of these exotic hadrons, at present and future e+e- and hadron collider experiments.
We discuss several highly accurate theoretical predictions for masses of baryons containing the b quark which have been recently confirmed by experimental data. Several predictions are given for additional properties of heavy baryons. We also discuss the two charged exotic resonances Z_b with quantum numbers of a (b bbar u ddbar) tetraquark, very recently reported by Belle in the channel [Upsilon(nS) π^+, n=1,2,3]. Among possible implications are deeply bound I=0 counterparts of the Z_b-s and existence of a Sigma_b^+ Sigma_b^- dibaryon, a "beauteron".
