The Ricci flow was introduced by Hamilton and gained its importance through the years. Of special importance is the limiting behavior of the flow and its symmetry properties. Taking this into account, we present a novel normalization for the homogeneous Ricci flow with natural compactness properties. In addition, we present a characterization for Gromov-Hausdorff limits of homogeneous spaces.
As a result, we present a detailed picture of the homogeneous Ricci flow for three-isotropy-summands flag manifolds: phase portraits, basins of attractions, conjugation classes and collapsing phenomena. Moreover, we achieve a full classification of the possible Gromov-Hausdorff limits of the aforementioned lines of flow.
In this paper we study the global behavior of the Ricci flow equation for two classes of homogeneous manifolds with two isotropy summands. Using methods of the qualitative theory of differential equations, we present the global phase portrait of such systems and derive some geometrical consequences on the structure of such manifolds under the action of the Ricci flow.
We consider the Ricci flow equation for invariant metrics on compact and connected homogeneous spaces whose isotropy representation decomposes into two irreducible inequivalent summands. By studying the corresponding dynamical system, we completely describe the behaviour of the homogeneous Ricci flow on this kind of spaces. Moreover, we investigate the existence of ancient solutions and relate this to the existence and non-existence of invariant Einstein metrics.
The space of $G$-invariant metrics on a homogeneous space $G/H$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of inner products on the tangent space $\fr{m}\cong T_{\it o}(G/H)$, which are invariant under the isotropy representation. When all the isotropy summands are inequivalent to each other, then the metric is called diagonal. We will describe a special class of $G$-invariant metrics %with additional symmetries. in the case where the isotropy representation of $G/H$ contains some equivalent isotropy summands. Even though this problem has been considered sporadically in the bibliography, in …
It is well known that the Einstein equation on a Riemannian flag manifold $(G/K,g)$ reduces to a algebraic system, if $g$ is a $G$-invariant metric. In this paper we described this system for all flag manifolds of a classical Lie group. We also determined the number of isotropy summands for all of these spaces and proved certain properties of the set of t-roots for flag manifolds of type $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$.
The paper is devoted to the study of geodesic orbit Riemannian spaces that could be characterize by the property that any geodesic is an orbit of a 1-parameter group of isometries. The main result is the classification of compact simply connected geodesic orbit Riemannian spaces $G/H$ with two irreducible submodules in the isotropy representation.
Let $M=G/K$ be a generalized flag manifold, that is the adjoint orbit of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$. We use the variational approach to find invariant Einstein metrics for all flag manifolds with two isotropy summands. We also determine the nature of these Einstein metrics as critical points of the scalar curvature functional under fixed volume.
We study the existence of invariant Einstein metrics on real flag manifolds associated to simple and non-compact split real forms of complex classical Lie algebras whose isotropy representation decomposes into two or three irreducible sub-representations. In this situation, one can have equivalent sub-modules, leading to the existence of non-diagonal homogeneous Riemannian metrics. In particular, we prove the existence of non-diagonal Einstein metrics on real flag manifolds.
We study invariant Einstein metrics on the Stiefel manifold $V_k\mathbb{R}^n\cong \mathrm{SO}(n)/\mathrm{SO}(n-k)$ of all orthonormal $k$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The isotropy representation of this homogeneous space contains equivalent summands, so a complete description of $G$-invariant metrics is not easy. In this paper we view the manifold $V_{2p}\mathbb{R}^n$ as total space over a classical generalized flag manifolds with two isotropy summands and prove for $2\le p\le \frac25 n-1$ it admits at least four invariant Einstein metrics determined by $\mathrm{Ad}(\mathrm{U}(p) \times \mathrm{S…
We study the isotropy representation of real flag manifolds associated to simple Lie algebras that are split real forms of complex simple Lie algebras. For each Dynkin diagram the invariant irreducible subspaces for the compact part of the isotropy subgroup are described. Contrary to the complex flag manifolds the decomposition into irreducible components is not in general unique, since there are cases with infinitely many invariant subspaces.
In this paper we study invariant almost Hermitian geometry on generalized flag manifolds which the isotropy representation decompose into two or three irreducible components. We will provide a classification of such flag manifolds admitting Kähler like scalar curvature metric, that is, almost Hermitian structures $(g,J)$ satisfying $s=2s_C$ where $s$ is Riemannian scalar curvature and $s_C$ is the Chern scalar curvature.
We give an overview of our earlier classification results in [DW4] and [DW6] for superpotentials of scalar curvature type of the cohomogeneity one Ricci-flat equations. We then give an account of the classification in the case where the isotropy representation of the principal orbit consists of exactly three distinct irreducible real summands--the leftover case from [DW6].
In this paper, we classify compact simply connected cohomogeneity one manifolds up to equivariant diffeomorphism whose isotropy representation by the connected component of the principal isotropy subgroup has three or less irreducible summands. The manifold is either a bundle over a homogeneous space or an irreducible symmetric space. As a corollary such manifolds admit an invariant metric with non-negative sectional curvature.
We study homogeneous curves in generalized flag manifolds $G/K$ with $G_2$-type $t$-roots, which are geodesics with respect to each $G$-invariant metric on $G/K$. These curves are called equigeodesics. The tangent space of such flag manifolds splits into six isotropy summands, which are in one-to-one correspondence with $t$-roots. Also, these spaces are a generalization of the exceptional full flag manifold $G_2/T$. We give a characterization for structural equigeodesics for flag manifolds with $G_2$-type $t$-roots, and we give for each such flag manifold, a list of subspaces in which the vect…
We give the global picture of the normalized Ricci flow on generalized flag manifolds with two or three isotropy summands. The normalized Ricci flow for these spaces descents to a parameter depending system of two or three ordinary differential equations, respectively. We present here the qualitative study of these system's global phase portrait, by using techniques of Dynamical Systems theory. This study allows us to draw conclusions about the existence and the analytical form of invariant Einstein metrics on such manifolds, and seems to offer a better insight to the classification problem of…
We describe the invariant metrics on real flag manifolds and classify those with the following property: every geodesic is the orbit of a one-parameter subgroup. Such a metric is called g.o. (geodesic orbit). In contrast to the complex case, on real flag manifolds the isotropy representation can have equivalent submodules, which makes invariant metrics depend on more parameters and allows us to find more cases in which non-trivial g.o. metrics exist.
We use the Hopf fibration to explicitly compute generators of the second homotopy group of the flag manifolds of a compact Lie group. We show that these $2$-spheres have nice geometrical properties such as being totally geodesic surfaces with respect to any invariant metric on the flag manifold. We characterize when the generators with the same invariant geometry are in the same homotopy class. This is done by exploring the action of Weyl group on the irreducible components of isotropy representation of the flag manifold.
Real flag manifolds are the isotropy orbits of noncompact symmetric spaces $G/K$. Any such manifold $M$ enjoys two very peculiar geometric properties: It carries a transitive action of the (noncompact) Lie group $G$, and it is embedded in euclidean space as a taut submanifold. The aim of the paper is to link these two properties by showing that the gradient flow of any height function is a one-parameter subgroup of $G$, where the gradient is defined with respect to a suitable homogeneous metric $s$ on $M$; this generalizes the Kaehler metric on adjoint orbits (the so-called complex flag manifo…
We study the behavior of the normalized Ricci flow of invariant Riemannian homogeneous metrics at infinity for generalized Wallach spaces, generalized flag manifolds with four isotropy summands and second Betti number equal to one, and the Stiefel manifolds $V_2\mathbb{R}^n$ and $V_{1+k_2}\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n = 1+k_2+k_3$. We use techniques from the theory of differential equations, in particular the Poincaré compactification.
Let $P=G/K$ be a semisimple non-compact Riemannian symmetric space, where $G=I_0(P)$ and $K=G_p$ is the stabilizer of $p\in P$. Let $X$ be an orbit of the (isotropy) representation of $K$ on $T_p(P)$ ($X$ is called a real flag manifold). Let $K_0\subset K$ be the stabilizer of a maximal flat, totally geodesic submanifold of $P$ which contains $p$. We show that if all the simple root multiplicities of $G/K$ are at least 2 then $K_0$ is connected and the action of $K_0$ on $X$ is equivariantly formal. In the case when the multiplicities are equal and at least 2, we will give a purely geometric p…
Let $G/H$ be a compact homogeneous space, and let $\hat{g}_0$ and $\hat{g}_1$ be $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on $G/H$. We consider the problem of finding a $G$-invariant Einstein metric $g$ on the manifold $G/H\times [0,1]$ subject to the constraint that $g$ restricted to $G/H\times \{0\}$ and $G/H\times \{1\}$ coincides with $\hat{g}_0$ and $\hat{g}_1$, respectively. By assuming that the isotropy representation of $G/H$ consists of pairwise inequivalent irreducible summands, we show that we can always find such an Einstein metric.
We consider invariant Einstein metrics on the Stiefel manifold $V_q\bb{R} ^n$ of all orthonormal $q$-frames in $\bb{R}^n$. This manifold is diffeomorphic to the homogeneous space $\SO(n)/\SO(n-q)$ and its isotropy representation contains equivalent summands. %This causes difficulty in the description of all $\SO(n)$-invariant metrics. We prove, by assuming additional symmetries, that $V_4\bb{R}^n$ $(n\ge 6)$ admits at least four $\SO(n)$-invariant Einstein metrics, two of which are Jensen's metrics and the other two are new metrics. Moreover, we prove that $V_5\bb{R}^7$ admits at least six inv…
We consider invariant Einstein metrics on the quaternionic Stiefel manifolds $V_p\mathbb{H} ^n$ of all orthonormal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{H}^n$. This manifold is diffeomorphic to the homogeneous space $\mathrm{Sp}(n) / \mathrm{Sp}(n-p)$ and its isotropy representation contains equivalent summands. We obtain new Einstein metrics on $V_p\mathbb{H}^n \cong \mathrm{Sp}(n)/\mathrm{Sp}(n-p)$, where $n = k_1 + k_2 + k_3$ and $p = n-k_3$. We view $V_p\mathbb{H}^n$ as a total space over the generalized Wallach space $\mathrm{Sp}(n) / (\mathrm{Sp}(k_1) \times \mathrm{Sp}(k_2) \times \mathrm{Sp}(k_3))$ a…
We give an overview of progress on homogeneous Einstein metrics on large classes of homogeneous manifolds, such as generalized flag manifolds and Stiefel manifolds. The main difference between these two classes of homogeneous spaces is that their isotropy representation does not contain/contain equivalent summands. We also discuss a third class of homogeneous spaces that falls into the intersection of such dichotomy, namely the generalized Wallach spaces. We give new invariant Einstein metrics on the Stiefel manifold $V_5\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\ge 7$) and through this example we show how to prove ex…
In 1995, S. Adams and G. Stuck as well as A. Zeghib independently provided a classification of non-compact Lie groups which can act isometrically and locally effectively on compact Lorentzian manifolds. In the case that the corresponding Lie algebra contains a direct summand isomorphic to the two-dimensional special linear algebra or to a twisted Heisenberg algebra, Zeghib also described the geometric structure of the manifolds. Using these results, we investigate the local geometry of compact homogeneous Lorentz spaces whose isometry groups have non-compact connected components. It turns out …
Based on the work of Adams and Stuck as well as on the work of Zeghib, we classify the Lie groups which can act isometrically and locally effectively on Lorentzian manifolds of finite volume. In the case that the corresponding Lie algebra contains a direct summand isomorphic to the two-dimensional special linear algebra or to a twisted Heisenberg algebra, we also describe the geometric structure of the manifolds if they are compact. Using these results, we investigate the local geometry of compact homogeneous Lorentz spaces whose isometry groups have non-compact connected components. It turns …
We investigate homogeneous geodesics in a class of homogeneous spaces called $M$-spaces, which are defined as follows. Let $G/K$ be a generalized flag manifold with $K=C(S)=S\times K_1$, where $S$ is a torus in a compact simple Lie group $G$ and $K_1$ is the semisimple part of $K$. Then the {\it associated $M$-space} is the homogeneous space $G/K_1$. These spaces were introduced and studied by H.C. Wang in 1954. We prove that for various classes of $M$-spaces the only g.o. metric is the standard metric. For other classes of $M$-spaces we give either necessary, or necessary and sufficient condi…
