Utilizing an adiabatic approximation method a bipartite qudit-oscillator Hamiltonian is explicitly studied for low spin values in both strong and ultrastrong coupling regimes. The quasiprobability densities on the hybrid factorized phase space are introduced. Integrating over a sector of the composite phase space, the quasiprobability distributions of the complementary subsystem are recovered. In the strong coupling regime the qudit entropy displays a pattern of quasiperiodic collapses and revivals, where the locally minimum nonzero configurations appearing at rational fractions of the revival time correspond to the spin kitten states. Starting with a bipartite factorizable initial state the evolution to the nonclassical transitory spin kitten states are displayed via the diagonal spin PQ-representation. The formation of transient spin kitten states is further substantiated by constructing the spin tomogram that employs the positive definite probability distributions embodying the diagonal elements of the corresponding density matrix in an arbitrarily rotated frame. As another manifestation of nonclassicality the emergence of the spin squeezed states during the bipartite evolution is observed. In the ultrastrong coupling domain a large number of interaction dependent modes and their harmonics are generated. The consequent randomization of the phases eliminates the quasiperiodicity of the system which is now driven towards a stabilization of the entropy accompanied with stochastic fluctuations around its stabilized value. Both in the strong and ultrastrong coupling realms antibunching of the photoemission events are realized particularly for the small spin values.
We study the evolution of the hybrid entangled squeezed states of the qubit-oscillator system in the strong coupling domain. Following the adiabatic approximation we obtain the reduced density matrices of the qubit and the oscillator degrees of freedom. The oscillator reduced density matrix is utilized to calculate the quasiprobability distributions such as the Sudarshan-Glauber diagonal P -representation, the Wigner W -distribution, and the nonnegative Husimi Q-function. The negativity associated with the W -distribution acts as a measure of the nonclassicality of the state. The existence of …
We study the evolution of bipartite entangled quasi-Bell states in a strongly coupled qubit-oscillator system in the presence of a static bias, and extend it to the ultra-strong coupling regime. Using the adiabatic approximation the reduced density matrix of the qubit is obtained for the strong coupling domain in closed form that involves linear combinations of the Jacobi theta functions. The reduced density matrix of the oscillator yields the phase space Husimi Q-distribution. In the strong coupling regime the $Q$-function evolves to uniformly separated macroscopically distinct Gaussian peaks…
We study the evolution of the hybrid entangled states in a bipartite (ultra) strongly coupled qubit-oscillator system. Using the generalized rotating wave approximation the reduced density matrices of the qubit and the oscillator are obtained. The reduced density matrix of the oscillator yields the phase space quasi probability distributions such as the diagonal P-representation, the Wigner W-distribution and the Husimi Q-function. In the strong coupling regime the Q-function evolves to uniformly separated macroscopically distinct Gaussian peaks representing 'kitten' states at certain specifie…
We analyse the properties of a strongly-damped quantum harmonic oscillator by means of an exact diagonalisation of the full Hamiltonian, including both the oscillator and the reservoir degrees of freedom to which it is coupled. Many of the properties of the oscillator, including its steady-state properties and entanglement with the reservoir can be understood and quantified in terms of a simple probability density, which we may associate with the ground-state frequency spectrum of the oscillator.
We investigate how to model Markovian evolution of coupled harmonic oscillators, each of them interacting with a local environment. When the coupling between the oscillators is weak, dissipation may be modeled using local Lindblad terms for each of the oscillators in the master equation, as is commonly done. When the coupling between oscillators is strong, this model may become invalid. We derive a master equation for two coupled harmonic oscillators which are subject to individual heat baths modeled by a collection of harmonic oscillators, and show that this master equation in general contain…
In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of the coherence phenomenon of two coupled dissipative oscillators. The action of a classical driving field on one of the oscillators is also analyzed. Master equations are derived for both regimes of weakly and strongly interacting oscillators from which interesting results arise concerning the coherence properties of the joint and the reduced system states. The strong coupling regime is required to achieve a large frequency shift of the oscillator normal modes, making it possible to explore the whole profile of the spectral density of the res…
Starting with the quasi-Bell states of the qubit-oscillator system, we obtain time evolution of the density matrix under the adiabatic approximation. The composite density matrix leads to, via partial tracing of the qubit degree of freedom, the reduced density matrix of the oscillator that is utilized to obtain the quasi-probability distributions such as Glauber-Sudarshan P function, Wigner W function and Husimi Q function. The negativity of the Wigner function acts as a measure of the nonclassicality of the state. The negativity becomes particularly relevant in understanding a comparison betw…
We study the intrinsic decoherence of coupled harmonic oscillators. The Milburn master equation is solved exactly, and the dynamics of virtual ground state excitations are investigated. The interaction of quantum correlations and virtual excitation was then studied. The following is a summary of our major findings. (i) The damped oscillatory profile of all three quantities is the same. (ii) Ultra-strong coupling combined with huge anisotropy values results in the reemergence of entanglement and steering. (iii) To sustain entanglement and steering, virtual excitations are required. (iv) The qua…
We study the dynamics of a mechanical resonator parametrically coupled to a driven dissipative quantum emitter in the ultra-strong coupling regime. We show that this regime is fully compatible with a semi-classical treatment, and we derive master equations for the emitter and the resonator. We show that the fluctuations of the driven emitter's population induce the non-symmetrical scattering of the mechanical quadratures. At long timescales, such scattering back-acts on the emitter, which eventually decouples from the driving light. This optical noise at the quantum limit is observable with st…
Spontaneous synchronization between coupled periodic systems occur in a wealth of classical physical setups. Here, we show theoretically that the phase of two distinct quantum harmonic oscillators spontaneously when they are strongly coupled to a common bosonic quantum dissipative environment at zero temperature, in the absence of any driving mechanism. To do so, we compute the dynamics of the oscillators with an exact master equation obtained from a path integral formalism. Above some value of the system-environment coupling strength, we observe numerically a strongly reduced damping and a fr…
The dynamics of a qubit coupled with a quantum oscillator is re-studied in the region of strong coupling. The non-degenerate perturbation is added to the usual degenerate one and new results are given.
We investigate the quantum entanglement dynamics of undriven anharmonic (nonlinear) oscillators with quartic potentials. We first consider the indirect interaction between two such nonlinear oscillators mediated by a third, linear oscillator and show that it leads to a time-varying entanglement of the oscillators, the entanglement being strongly influenced by the nonlinear oscillator dynamics. In the presence of dissipation, the role of nonlinearity is strongly manifested in the steady state dynamics of the indirectly coupled anharmonic oscillators. We further illustrate the effect of nonlinea…
We calculate resonances which are formed by a particle in a potential which is either Coulombian or quadratic when the particle is strongly coupled to a massless boson, taking only two energy levels into consideration. From these calculations we derive how the moving away of the particle from its attraction center goes together with the energy lowering of hybrid states that this particle forms with the field. We study the width of these states and we show that stable states may also appear in the coupling.
We prove that temporal control of the strengths of springs connecting $N$ harmonic oscillators in a chain provides complete access to all Gaussian states of $N-1$ collective modes. The proof relies on the construction of a suitable basis of cradle modes for the system. An iterative algorithm to reach any desired Gaussian state requires at most $3N(N-1)/2$ operations. We illustrate this capability by engineering squeezed pseudo-phonon states - highly non-local, strongly correlated states that may result from various nonlinear processes. Tunable chains of coupled harmonic oscillators can be impl…
The idea of adaptive perturbation theory is to divide a Hamiltonian into a solvable part and a perturbation part. The solvable part contains the non-interacting sector and the diagonal elements of Fock space from the interacting terms. The perturbed term is the non-diagonal sector of Fock space. Therefore, the perturbation parameter is not coupling constant. This is different from the standard procedure of previous perturbation method. In this letter, we use the adaptive perturbation theory to extract the solvable elements in the strongly coupled double harmonic oscillator system and obtain th…
A new solution is proposed to the long-standing problem of describing the quantum phase of a harmonic oscillator. In terms of an'exponential phase operator', defined by a new 'polar decomposition' of the quantized amplitude of the oscillator, a regular phase operator is constructed in the Hilbert-Fock space as a strongly convergent power series. It is shown that the eigenstates of the new 'exponential operators are SU(1,1) coherent states in the Holstein-Primakoff realization. In terms of these eigenstates, the diagonal representation of phase densities and a generalized spectal resolution of …
We present evidence of metastable rare quantum-fluctuation switching for the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator coupled to a zero-temperature bath in the strongly dispersive regime. We show that single-atom complex amplitude bistability is accompanied by the appearance of a low-amplitude long-lived transient state, hereinafter called `dark state', having a distribution with quasi-Poissonian statistics both for the coupled qubit and cavity mode. We find that the dark state is linked to a spontaneous flipping of the qubit state, detuning the cavity to a low-photon response. The appear…
Periodically-driven oscillators are commonly described in a frame co-rotating with the drive and using the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). This description, however, is known to induce errors for off-resonant driving. Here we show that the standard quantum description, using creation and annihilation of particles with the oscillator's natural frequency, necessarily leads to incorrect results when combined with the RWA. We demonstrate this on the simple harmonic oscillator and present an alternative operator basis which reconciles the RWA with off-resonant driving. The approach is also appli…
We analyze the Jaynes-Cummings model of quantum optics, in the strong-dispersive regime. In the bad cavity limit and on timescales short compared to the atomic coherence time, the dynamics are those of a nonlinear oscillator. A steady-state non-perturbative semiclassical analysis exhibits a finite region of bistability delimited by a pair of critical points, unlike the usual dispersive bistability from a Kerr nonlinearity. This analysis explains our quantum trajectory simulations that show qualitative agreement with recent experiments from the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics.
Modeling the non-equilibrium dissipative dynamics of strongly interacting quantized degrees of freedom is a fundamental problem in several branches of physics and chemistry. We implement a quantum state trajectory scheme for solving Lindblad quantum master equations that describe coherent and dissipative processes for a set of strongly-coupled quantized oscillators. The scheme involves a sequence of stochastic quantum jumps with transition probabilities determined the system state and the system-reservoir dynamics. Between consecutive jumps, the wavefunction is propagated in coordinate space u…
The feasibility and extraordinary properties of mirrorless parametric oscillations in strongly absorbing negative-index metamaterials are shown. They stem from the backwardness of electromagnetic waves inherent to this type of metamaterials.
We examine classical Bogoliubov's model of a particle coupled to a heat bath which consists of infinitely many stochastic oscillators. Bogoliubov's result suggests that, in the stochastic limit, the model exhibits convergence to thermodynamical equilibrium. It has recently been shown that the system does attain the equilibrium if the coupling constant is small enough. We show that in the case of the large coupling constant the distribution function $ρ_{S}(q,p,t)\to 0$ pointwise as $t\to\infty$. This implies that if there is convergence to equilibrium, then the limit measure has no finite momen…
Recent experiments on quantum behavior in microfabricated solid-state systems suggest tantalizing connections to quantum optics. Several of these experiments address the prototypical problem of cavity quantum electrodynamics: a two-level system coupled to a quantum harmonic oscillator. Such devices may allow the exploration of parameter regimes outside the near-resonance and weak-coupling assumptions of the ubiquitous rotating-wave approximation (RWA), necessitating other theoretical approaches. One such approach is an adiabatic approximation in the limit that the oscillator frequency is much …
We report on experimentally measured light shifts of superconducting flux qubits deep-strongly coupled to LC oscillators, where the coupling constants are comparable to the qubit and oscillator resonance frequencies. By using two-tone spectroscopy, the energies of the six lowest levels of each circuit are determined. We find huge Lamb shifts that exceed 90% of the bare qubit frequencies and inversions of the qubits' ground and excited states when there are a finite number of photons in the oscillator. Our experimental results agree with theoretical predictions based on the quantum Rabi model.
We analyze the dynamics and final populations in a Landau-Zener problem for a two level system (or qubit) when this system interacts with one harmonic oscillator mode that is initially set to a finite-temperature thermal equilibrium state. The harmonic oscillator could represent an external mode that is strongly coupled to the qubit, e.g. an ionic oscillation mode in a molecule, or it could represent a prototypical uncontrolled environment. We analyze the qubit's occupation probabilities at the final time in a number of different regimes, varying the qubit and oscillator frequencies, their cou…
Two-level system strongly coupled to a single resonator mode (harmonic oscillator) is a paradigmatic model in many subfields of physics. We study theoretically the Landau-Zener transition in this model. Analytical solution for the transition probability is possible when the oscillator is highly excited, i.e. at high temperatures. Then the relative change of the excitation level of the oscillator in the course of the transition is small. The physical picture of the transition in the presence of coupling to the oscillator becomes transparent in the limiting cases of slow and fast oscillator. Slo…
The key feature of a quantum spin coupled to a harmonic bath---a model dissipative quantum system---is competition between oscillator potential energy and spin tunneling rate. We show that these opposing tendencies cause environmental entanglement through superpositions of adiabatic and antiadiabatic oscillator states, which then stabilizes the spin coherence against strong dissipation. This insight motivates a fast-converging variational coherent-state expansion for the many-body ground state of the spin-boson model, which we substantiate via numerical quantum tomography.
Multimode optomechanical systems are an emerging platform for studying fundamental aspects of matter near the quantum ground state and are useful in sensitive sensing and measurement applications. We study optomechanical cooling in a system where two nearly degenerate mechanical oscillators are coupled to a single microwave cavity. Due to an optically mediated coupling the two oscillators hybridize into a bright mode with strong optomechanical cooling rate and a dark mode nearly decoupled from the system. We find that at high coupling, sideband cooling of the dark mode is strongly suppressed. …
Cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators represents a primary concern in cavity optomechanics. Here in the strong optomechanical coupling regime, we propose to dynamically control the cavity dissipation, which is able to significantly accelerate the cooling process while strongly suppressing the heating noise. Furthermore, the dynamic control is capable of overcoming quantum backaction and reducing the cooling limit by several orders of magnitude. The dynamic dissipation control provides new insights for tailoring the optomechanical interaction and offers the prospect of exploring macroscop…
Quantum devices for sensing and computing applications require coherent quantum systems which can be manipulated in a fast and robust way. Such quantum control is typically achieved using external electric or magnetic fields which drive the system's orbital or spin degrees of freedom. However, most of these approaches require complex and unwieldy antenna or gate structures, and with few exceptions are limited to the regime of weak driving. Here, we present a novel approach to strongly and coherently drive a single electron spin in the solid state using internal strain fields in an integrated q…
We study the entanglement dynamics of two coupled mechanical oscillators, within a modulated optomechanical system. We find that, depending on the strength of the mechanical coupling, one could observe either a stationary or a dynamical behavior of the mechanical entanglement, which is extremely robust against the oscillator temperature. Moreover, we have shown that this entanglement dynamics is strongly related to the stability of the normal modes. Taking mechanical damping effects into account, an analytical expression corresponding to the critical mechanical coupling strength, where the tra…
A flux qubit biased at its symmetry point shows a minimum in the energy splitting (the gap), providing protection against flux noise. We have fabricated a qubit whose gap can be tuned fast and have coupled this qubit strongly to an LC oscillator. We show full spectroscopy of the qubit-resonator system and generate vacuum Rabi oscillations. When the gap is made equal to the oscillator frequency $ν_{osc}$ we find the strongest qubit-resonator coupling ($g/h\sim0.1ν_{\rm osc}$). Here being at resonance coincides with the optimal coherence of the symmetry point. Significant further increase of the…
A single superconducting artificial atom provides a unique basis for coupling electromagnetic fields and photons hardly achieved with a natural atom. Bringing a pair of harmonic oscillators into resonance with transitions of the three-level atom converts atomic spontaneous processes into correlated emission dynamics. We demonstrate two-mode correlated emission lasing on harmonic oscillators coupled via the fully controllable three-level artificial atom. Correlation of two different color emissions reveals itself as equally narrowed linewiths and quench of their mutual phase-diffusion. The mutu…
There is considerable interest in collective effects in hybrid systems formed by molecular or atomic ensembles strongly coupled by an electromagnetic resonance. For analyzing such collective effects, we develop an efficient and general theoretical formalism based on the natural modes of the resonator. The main strength of our approach is its generality and the high level of analyticity enabled by modal analysis, which allows one to model complex hybrid systems without any restriction on the resonator shapes or material properties, and to perform statistical computations to predict general prop…
