We investigate the Englert-Brout-Higgs-Guralnik-Hagen-Kibble mechanism for non-Hermitian field theories with local non-Abelian gauge symmetry in different regions of their parameter spaces. We demonstrate that the two aspects of the mechanism, that is giving mass to gauge vector bosons and at the same time preventing the existence of massless Goldstone bosons, remain to be synchronized in all regimes characterized by a modified CPT symmetry. In the domain of parameter space where the "would be Goldstone bosons" can be identified the gauge vector bosons become massive and the Goldstone bosons cease to exist. The mechanism is also in tact at the standard exceptional points. However, at the zero exceptional points, that is when the eigenvalues of the mass squared matrix vanish irrespective of the symmetry breaking, the mechanism breaks down as the Goldstone bosons can not be identified and the gauge vector bosons remain massless. This breakdown coincides with the vanishing of the CPT inner product of symmetry breaking vacua defined on the eigenvector space of mass squared matrix. We verify this behaviour for a theory with SU(N) symmetry in which the complex scalar fields are taken in the fundamental as well as in the adjoint representation.
We demonstrate that the number of Nambu-Goldstone bosons is always equal to the number of conserved currents inside the scenario of non-Hermitian field theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking. This eliminates the redundancies which normally appears in Hermitian field theories, specifically when the Lagrangian under analysis violates explicitly the Lorentz symmetry.
We discuss the extension of the Goldstone and Englert-Brout-Higgs mechanisms to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians that possess an antilinear PT symmetry. We study a model due to Alexandre, Ellis, Millington and Seynaeve and show that for the spontaneous breakdown of a continuous global symmetry we obtain a massless Goldstone boson in all three of the antilinear symmetry realizations: eigenvalues real, eigenvalues in complex conjugate pairs, and eigenvalues real but eigenvectors incomplete. In this last case we show that it is possible for the Goldstone boson mode to be a zero-norm state. For the brea…
Comment on ``PT-Symmetric versus Hermitian Formulations of Quantum Mechanics [hep-th/0511229]''
Relation between the Virasoro constraints and KP integrability (determinant formulas) for matrix models is a lasting mystery. We elaborate on the claim that the situation is improved when integrability is enhanced to super-integrability, i.e. to explicit formulas for Gaussian averages of characters. In this case, the Virasoro constraints are equivalent to simple recursive formulas, which have appropriate combinations of characters as their solutions. Moreover, one can easily separate dependence on the size of matrix, and deduce superintegrability from the Virasoro constraints. We describe one …
Recently, the steady states of non-unitary free fermion dynamics are found to exhibit novel critical phases with power-law squared correlations and a logarithmic subsystem entanglement. In this work, we theoretically understand the underlying physics by constructing solvable static/Brownian quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chains with non-Hermitian dynamics. We find the action of the replicated system generally shows (one or infinite copies of) ${O(2)\times O(2)}$ symmetries, which is broken to ${O(2)}$ by the saddle-point solution. This leads to an emergent conformal field theory of the Goldstone …
Non-Hermitian quantum theories have been applied in many other areas of physics. In this note, I will briefly review recent developments in the formulation of non-Hermitian quantum field theories, highlighting features that are unique compared to Hermitian theories. I will touch upon their crucial discrete symmetries and how continuous symmetry properties are borne out, including Noether's theorem, the Goldstone theorem and the Englert-Brout-Higgs mechanism. As examples, I will describe a non-Hermitian supersymmetric theory, and draw attention to non-Hermitian deformations of (scalar) QED, the…
We present an overview of some key results obtained in a recent series devoted to non-Hermitian quantum field theories for which we systematically modify the underlying symmetries. Particular attention is placed on the interplay between the continuous symmetry group that we alter from global to local, from Abelian to non-Abelian, from rank one to generic rank N, and the discrete anti-linear modified CPT-symmetries. The presence of the latter guarantees the reality of the mass spectrum in a certain parameter regime. We investigate the extension of Goldstone's theorem and the Higgs mechanism, wh…
We investigate the effects of non-Hermiticity on interacting fermionic systems. We do this by including non-Hermitian bilinear terms into the 3+1 dimensional Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Two possible bilinear modifications give rise to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric theories; this happens when the standard NJL model is extended either by a pseudovector background field $ig \barψγ_5 B_μγ^μψ$ or by an antisymmetric-tensor background field $g \barψF_{μν}γ^μγ^νψ$. The three remaining bilinears are {\it anti}-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric in nature, $ig \barψB_μγ^μψ, ig\barψγ_5 ψ$ and $ig\barψ{1}ψ$, so th…
We reconsider the Lee-Wick (LW) models and compare their properties to the properties of the models that contain purely virtual particles. We argue against the LW premise that unstable particles can be removed from the sets of incoming and outgoing states in scattering processes. The removal leads to a non-Hermitian classical limit, besides clashing with the observation of the muon. If, on the other hand, all the states are included, the LW models have a Hamiltonian unbounded from below or negative norms. Purely virtual particles, on the contrary, lead to a Hermitian classical limit and are ab…
