Simultaneous quantum estimation of multiple parameters has recently become essential in quantum metrology. Although the ultimate sensitivity of a multiparameter quantum estimation in noiseless environments can beat the standard quantum limit that every classical sensor is bounded by, it is unclear whether the quantum sensor has an advantage over the classical one under realistic noise. In this work, we present a framework of the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters with quantum sensors in a certain noisy environment. Our multiple parameters to be estimated are three components of an external magnetic field, and we consider the noise that causes only dephasing. We show that there is an optimal sensing time in the noisy environment and the sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit when the noisy environment is non-Markovian.
Uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics express bounds on our ability to simultaneously obtain knowledge about expectation values of non-commuting observables of a quantum system. They quantify trade-offs in accuracy between complementary pieces of information about the system. In Quantum multiparameter estimation, such trade-offs occur for the precision achievable for different parameters characterizing a density matrix: an uncertainty relation emerges between the achievable variances of the different estimators. This is in contrast to classical multiparameter estimation, where simultaneou…
By using the quantum Fisher information (QFI), we address the process of \textit{single}-parameter estimation in the presence of bosonic as well as fermionic environments and protection of information against the noise. In particular, the quantum interferometric power (IP) of the evolved state of the system is uncovered as an important lower bound for the QFIs of initially encoded parameters. Moreover, we unveil new witnesses of non-Markovianity, that can be used to detect efficiently the memory effects and backflow of information from the environment to the system. On the other hand, we also …
Multiparameter estimation, which aims to simultaneously determine multiple parameters in the same measurement procedure, attracts extensive interests in measurement science and technologies. Here, we propose a multimode many-body quantum interferometry for simultaneously estimating linear and quadratic Zeeman coefficients via an ensemble of spinor atoms. Different from the scheme with individual atoms, by using an $N$-atom multimode GHZ state, the measurement precisions of the two parameters can simultaneously attain the Heisenberg limit, and they respectively depend on the hyperfine spin numb…
Most studies in multiparameter estimation assume the dynamics is fixed and focus on identifying the optimal probe state and the optimal measurements. In practice, however, controls are usually available to alter the dynamics, which provides another degree of freedom. In this paper we employ optimal control methods, particularly the gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE), to design optimal controls for the improvement of the precision limit in multiparameter estimation. We show that the controlled schemes not only capable to provide a higher precision limit, but also have a higher stability …
Multiparameter quantum estimation is made difficult by the following three obstacles. First, incompatibility among different physical quantities poses a limit on the attainable precision. Second, the ultimate precision is not saturated until you discover the optimal measurement. Third, the optimal measurement may generally depend on the target values of parameters, and thus may be impossible to perform for unknown target states. We present a method to circumvent these three obstacles. A class of quantum statistical models, which utilizes antiunitary symmetries or, equivalently, real density ma…
Multiparameter quantum estimation theory aims to determine simultaneously the ultimate precision of all parameters contained in the state of a given quantum system. Determining this ultimate precision depends on the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) which is essential to obtaining the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. This is the main motivation of this work which concerns the computation of the analytical expression of the QFIM. Inspired by the results reported in J. Phys. A 52, 035304 (2019), the general formalism of the multiparameter quantum estimation theory of quantum Gaussian states in t…

Using a quantum version of the Bell-Ziv-Zakai bound, I derive a Heisenberg limit to multiparameter estimation for any Gaussian prior probability density. The mean-square error lower bound is shown to have a universal quadratic scaling with respect to a quantum resource, such as the average photon number in the case of optical phase estimation, suitably weighted by the prior covariance matrix.

Simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters in quantum metrological models is complicated by factors relating to the (i) existence of a single probe state allowing for optimal sensitivity for all parameters of interest, (ii) existence of a single measurement optimally extracting information from the probe state on all the parameters, and (iii) statistical independence of the estimated parameters. We consider the situation when these concerns present no obstacle and for every estimated parameter the variance obtained in the multiparameter scheme is equal to that of an optimal scheme for that…
Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a core concept in theoretical quantum metrology due to the significant importance of quantum Cramér-Rao bound in quantum parameter estimation. However, studies in recent years have revealed wide connections between QFIM and other aspects of quantum mechanics, including quantum thermodynamics, quantum phase transition, entanglement witness, quantum speed limit and non-Markovianity. These connections indicate that QFIM is more than a concept in quantum metrology, but rather a fundamental quantity in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we summarize the pr…
We formulate multiparameter quantum estimation in the parametric and semiparametric setting. While the Holevo Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) requires no substantial modifications in moving from the former to the latter, we generalize the Helstrom CRB appropriately. We show that the Holevo CRB cannot be greater than twice the generalized Helstrom CRB. We also present a tighter, intermediate, bound. Finally, we show that for parameters encoded in the first moments of a Gaussian state there always exists a Gaussian measurement that gives a classical Fisher information matrix that is one-half of the quant…
Quantum metrology is the state-of-the-art measurement technology. It uses quantum resources to enhance the sensitivity of phase estimation beyond what reachable within classical physics. While single parameter estimation theory has been widely investigated, much less is known about the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases, which finds key applications in imaging and sensing. In this manuscript we provide conditions of useful entanglement (among multimode particles, qudits) for multiphase estimation and adapt them to multiarm Mach-Zehnder interferometry. We discuss benchmark multimode Foc…
Squeezing currently represents the leading strategy for quantum enhanced precision measurements of a single parameter in a variety of continuous- and discrete-variable settings and technological applications. However, many important physical problems including imaging and field sensing require the simultaneous measurement of multiple unknown parameters. The development of multiparameter quantum metrology is yet hindered by the intrinsic difficulty in finding saturable sensitivity bounds and feasible estimation strategies. Here, we derive the general operational concept of multiparameter squeez…
Since the initial discovery of quantum teleportation, it is devoted to transferring unknown quantum states from one party to another distant partner. However, in the scenarios of remote sensing, what people truly care about is the information carried by certain parameters. The problem of multiparameter estimation in the framework of qutrit teleportation under amplitude damping (AD) noise is studied. Particularly, two schemes are proposed to battle against AD noise and enhance the precision of multiparameter estimation by utilizing weak measurement (WM) and environment-assisted measurement (EAM…
We consider the problem of characterising the spatial extent of a composite light source using the superresolution imaging technique when the centroid of the source is not known precisely. We show that the essential features of this problem can be mapped onto a simple qubit model for joint estimation of a phase shift and a dephasing strength.
The estimation of more than one parameter in quantum mechanics is a fundamental problem with relevant practical applications. In fact, the ultimate limits in the achievable estimation precision are ultimately linked with the non-commutativity of different observables, a peculiar property of quantum mechanics. We here consider several estimation problems for qubit systems and evaluate the corresponding quantumness R, a measure that has been recently introduced in order to quantify how much incompatible are the parameters to be estimated. In particular, R is an upper bound for the renormalized d…

Careful tailoring the quantum state of probes offers the capability of investigating matter at unprecedented precisions. Rarely, however, the interaction with the sample is fully encompassed by a single parameter, and the information contained in the probe needs to be partitioned on multiple parameters. There exist then practical bounds on the ultimate joint-estimation precision set by the unavailability of a single optimal measurement for all parameters. Here we discuss how these considerations are modified for two-level quantum probes - qubits - by the use of two copies and entangling measur…
The interest in a system often resides in the interplay among different parameters governing its evolution. It is thus often required to access many of them at once for a complete description. Assessing how quantum enhancement in such multiparameter estimation can be achieved depends on understanding the many subtleties that come into play: establishing solid foundations is key to delivering future technology for this task. In this article we discuss the state of the art of quantum multiparameter estimation, with a particular emphasis on its theoretical tools, on application to imaging problem…
The quantum Cramér-Rao bound is a cornerstone of modern quantum metrology, as it provides the ultimate precision in parameter estimation. In the multiparameter scenario, this bound becomes a matrix inequality, which can be cast to a scalar form with a properly chosen weight matrix. Multiparameter estimation thus elicits tradeoffs in the precision with which each parameter can be estimated. We show that, if the information is encoded in a unitary transformation, we can naturally choose the weight matrix as the metric tensor linked to the geometry of the underlying algebra $\mathfrak{su}(n)$, wi…

We derive fundamental bounds on the maximal achievable precision in multiparameter noisy quantum metrology, valid under the most general entanglement-assisted adaptive strategy, which are tighter than the bounds obtained by a direct use of single-parameter results. This allows us to study the issue of the optimal probe incompatibility in the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters in generic noisy channels, while so far the issue has been studied mostly in effectively noiseless scenarios (where the Heisenberg scaling is possible). We apply our results to the estimation of both unitary a…
It was suggested in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 170802] that optical networks with relatively inexpensive overhead---single photon Fock states, passive optical elements, and single photon detection---can show significant improvements over classical strategies for single-parameter estimation, when the number of modes in the network is small (n < 7). A similar case was made in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 070403] for multi-parameter estimation, where measurement is instead made using photon-number resolving detectors. In this paper, we analytically compute the quantum Cramér-Rao bound to show the…
We identify precision limits for the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters in multimode interferometers. Quantum strategies to enhance the multiparameter sensitivity are based on entanglement among particles, modes or combining both. The maximum attainable sensitivity of particle-separable states defines the multiparameter shot-noise limit, which can be surpassed without mode entanglement. Further enhancements up to the multiparameter Heisenberg limit are possible by adding mode entanglement. Optimal strategies which saturate the precision bounds are provided.
In a ubiquitous $SU(2)$ dynamics, achieving the simultaneous optimal estimation of multiple parameters is significant but difficult. Using quantum control to optimize this $SU(2)$ coding unitary evolution is one of solutions. We propose a method, characterized by the nested cross-products of the coefficient vector $\mathbf{X}$ of $SU(2)$ generators and its partial derivative $\partial_\ell \mathbf{X}$, to investigate the control-enhanced quantum multiparameter estimation. Our work reveals that quantum control is not always functional in improving the estimation precision, which depends on the …
Single parameter estimation is known to benefit from extreme sensitivity to parameter changes in quantum critical systems. However, the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters is generally limited due to the incompatibility arising from the quantum nature of the underlying system. A key question is whether quantum criticality may also play a positive role in reducing the incompatibility in the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters. We argue that this is generally the case and verify this prediction in paradigmatic quantum many-body systems close to first and second order phase …
Interacting quantum systems are attracting increasing interest for developing precise metrology. In particular, the realisation that quantum-correlated states and the dynamics of interacting systems can lead to entirely new and unexpected phenomena have initiated an intense research effort to explore interaction-based metrology both theoretically and experimentally. However, the current framework of interaction-based metrology mainly focuses on single-parameter estimations, a demonstration of multiparameter metrology using interactions as a resource was heretofore lacking. Here we demonstrate …
