Characterizing the structure of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) in three dimensions is of high importance for accurate modeling of dust emission as a foreground to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). At high Galactic latitude, where the total dust content is low, accurate maps of the 3D structure of the ISM are lacking. We develop a method to quantify the complexity of the distribution of dust along the line of sight with the use of HI line emission. The method relies on a Gaussian decomposition of the HI spectra to disentangle the emission from overlapping components in velocity. We use this information to create maps of the number of clouds along the line of sight. We apply the method to: (a) the high-galactic latitude sky and (b) the region targeted by the BICEP/Keck experiment. In the North Galactic Cap we find on average three clouds per 0.2 square degree pixel while in the South the number falls to 2.5. The statistics of the number of clouds are affected by Intermediate-Velocity Clouds (IVCs), primarily in the North. The presence of IVCs results in detectable features in the dust emission measured by \textit{Planck}. We investigate the complexity of HI spectra in the BICEP/Keck region and find evidence for the existence of multiple components along the line of sight. The data (https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/8DA5LH) and software are made publicly available, and can be used to inform CMB foreground modeling and 3D dust mapping.
We search for microlensing events in fields along the Galactic minor axis, ranging from the Galactic center to -3.7<b< 3.9 deg., using the VVV survey near-IR photometry. The new search is made across VVV tiles b291, b305, b319, b347, b361 and b375, covering a total area of about 11.5 deg.^2. We find a total of N=238 new microlensing events in this new area, N=74 of which are classified as bulge red clump (RC) giant sources. Combining them with N=122 events that we had previously reported in the Galactic center (VVV tile b333), allows us to study the latitude distribution of the microlensing ev…
We report the distances of molecular clouds at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>10$^\circ$) derived from parallax and G band extinction (A$_{\rm G}$) measurements in the second Gaia data release, Gaia DR2. Aided by Bayesian analyses, we determined distances by identifying the breakpoint in the extinction A$_{\rm G}$ towards molecular clouds and using the extinction A$_{\rm G}$ of Gaia stars around molecular clouds to confirm the breakpoint. We use nearby star-forming regions, such as Orion, Taurus, Cepheus, and Perseus, whose distances are well-known to examine the reliability of our method. By co…
Extinction in ultraviolet is much more significant than in optical or infrared, which can be very informative to precisely measure the extinction and understand the dust properties in the low extinction areas. The high Galactic latitude sky is such an area, important for studying the extragalactic sky and the universe. Based on the stellar parameters measured by the LAMOST and GALAH spectroscopy and the ultraviolet photomery by the \emph{GALEX} space telescope, the extinction of 1,244,504 stars in the \emph{GALEX}/NUV band and 56,123 stars in the \emph{GALEX}/FUV band are calculated precisely.…
We determine the interstellar extinction in the selected high-latitude areas of the sky based on Gaia EDR3 astrometry and photometry and spectroscopic data from RAVE survey. We approximate the results with the cosecant law in each area thus deriving the parameters of the barometric formula for different lines of sight. The distribution of the parameters over the entire sky is described using spherical harmonics. As a result, we get a mathematical description of the interstellar visual extinction for different lines of sight and distances from the Sun which can be used for estimating interstell…
Gas at high Galactic latitude is a relatively little-noticed component of the interstellar medium. In an effort to address this, forty-one Planck Galactic Cold Clumps at high Galactic latitude (HGal; $|b|>25^{\circ}$) were observed in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O J=1-0 lines, using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7-m telescope. $^{12}$CO (1-0) and $^{13}$CO (1-0) emission was detected in all clumps while C$^{18}$O (1-0) emission was only seen in sixteen clumps. The highest and average latitudes are $71.4^{\circ}$ and $37.8^{\circ}$, respectively. Fifty-one velocity components were obt…
We present optical photometric, spectroscopic data for the stars in the high Galactic latitude molecular cloud MBM 110. For the complete membership selection of MBM 110, we also analyze WISE mid-infrared data and Gaia astrometric data. Membership of individual stars is critically evaluated using the data mentioned above. The Gaia parallax of stars in MBM 110 is 2.667 +/- 0.095 mas (d = 375 +/- 13 pc), which confirms that MBM 110 is a small star-forming region in the Orion-Eridanus superbubble. The age of MBM 110 is between 1.9 Myr and 3.1 Myr depending on the adopted pre-main sequence evolutio…
Based on the accurate color excess $E_{\rm G_{BP},G_{RP}}$ of more than 4 million stars and $E_{\rm NUV,G_{BP}}$ of more than 1 million stars from \citet{2021ApJS..254...38S}, the distance and the extinction of the molecular clouds in the MBM catalog at $|b|>20^{\circ}$ are studied in combination with the distance measurement of \emph{Gaia}/EDR3. The distance as well as the color excess is determined for 66 molecular clouds. The color excess ratio $E_{\rm G_{BP},G_{RP}}/E_{\rm NUV,G_{BP}}$ is derived for 39 of them, which is obviously larger and implies more small particles at smaller extincti…
Evidence for the Galactic contribution to the IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux
结果表明,能量大于100 TeV的冰立方天体物理中微子事件的银河纬度分布与天体物理中微子流的各向同性模型不一致。也就是说,事件的银河系纬度分布在低纬度|b| 50度处显示出过量<10 degrees and a deficit at high Galactic latitude |b| >。我们使用蒙特卡罗模拟表明,各向同性信号模型与数据的不一致性是在> 3西格玛水平,在我们的分析中的帐户的试验因素有关的低能量阈值的选择和银河系纬度分箱。
The neutral hydrogen 21 cm line is an excellent tracer of the atomic interstellar medium in the cold and the warm phases. Combined 21 cm emission and absorption observations are very useful to study the properties of the gas over a wide range of density and temperature. In this work, we have used 21 cm absorption spectra from recent interferometric surveys, along with the corresponding emission spectra from earlier single dish surveys to study the properties of the atomic gas in the Milky Way. In particular, we focus on a comparison of properties between lines of sight through the gas disk in …
We performed a systematic 6.7 GHz Class \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} methanol maser survey using the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope toward targets selected from the all-sky \emph{Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)} point catalog. In this paper, we report the results from the survey of those at high Galactic latitudes, i.e. $|b|>$ 2$^\circ$. Of 1473 selected \emph{WISE} point sources at high latitude, 17 point positions that were actually associated with 12 sources were detected with maser emission, reflecting the rarity (1$-$2\%) of methanol masers in the region away from th…
We use near-infrared (J-K)-colours of bright 2MASS galaxies, measured within a 7"-radius aperture, to calibrate the Schlegel et al. (1998) DIRBE/IRAS Galactic extinction map at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| < 10^{\rm o}$). Using 3460 galaxies covering a large range in extinction (up to $A_K$ = 1.15 or E(B-V) ~ 3.19), we derive a correction factor $f = 0.83 \pm 0.01$ by fitting a linear regression to the colour-extinction relation, confirming that the Schlegel et al. maps overestimate the extinction. We argue that the use of only a small range in extinction (e.g., $A_K$ < 0.4) increases the unce…
Simulated Faraday Rotation Measures toward High Galactic Latitudes
We report the results of our systematic survey for Galactic 6.7 GHz Class II CH$_3$OH maser emission toward a sample of young stellar objects. The survey was conducted with the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope (TMRT). The sample consists of 3348 sources selected from the all-sky \emph{Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)} point source catalog. We have discussed the selection criteria in detail and the detection results of those at high Galactic latitudes (i.e. $|b|>$ 2$^\circ$) in a previous paper (paper I). Here, we present the results from the survey of those at low Galactic latitudes, …
We investigate whether the sky rate of Fast Radio Bursts depends on Galactic latitude using the first catalog of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) Project. We first select CHIME/FRB events above a specified sensitivity threshold in consideration of the radiometer equation, and then compare these detections with the expected cumulative time-weighted exposure using Anderson-Darling and Kolmogrov-Smirnov tests. These tests are consistent with the null hypothesis that FRBs are distributed without Galactic latitude d…
The distribution of visual interstellar extinction $A_V$ has been mapped in selected areas over the Northern sky, using available LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2/EDR3 data. $A_V$ was modelled as a barometric function of galactic latitude and distance. The function parameters were then approximated by spherical harmonics. The resulting analytical tridimensional model of the interstellar extinction can be used to predict $A_V$ values for stars with known parallaxes, as well as the total Galactic extinction in a given location in the sky.
We have found a class of circular radio objects in the Evolutionary Map of the Universe Pilot Survey, using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The objects appear in radio images as circular edge-brightened discs, about one arcmin diameter, that are unlike other objects previously reported in the literature. We explore several possible mechanisms that might cause these objects, but none seems to be a compelling explanation.
We present an updated version catalogue of gamma-ray source candidates, 12Y-MST, selected using the minimum spanning tree (MST) algorithm on the 12-year Fermi-LAT sky (Pass 8) at energies higher than 10 GeV. The high-energy sky at absolute Galactic latitudes above 20 degrees has been investigated using rather restrictive selection criteria, resulting in a total sample of 1664 photon clusters, or candidate sources. Of these, 230 are new detections, that is, candidate sources without any association in other gamma-ray catalogues. A large fraction of them have interesting counterparts, most likel…
We used the ugr magnitudes of 1,437,467 F-G type main-sequence stars with metal abundance -2<[Fe/H]<+0.2 dex and estimated radial and vertical metallicity gradients for high Galactic-latitude fields (b>50) of the Milky Way Galaxy. The radial metallicity gradient d[Fe/H]/dR=-0.042(0.011) dex/kpc estimated for the stars with 1.31<z<=1.74 kpc is attributed to the thin-disc population. While, the radial gradients evaluated for stars at higher vertical distances are close to zero indicating that the thick disc and halo have not undergone a radial collapse phase at least at high Galactic latitudes. …
We present an analysis of Galactic bulge stars from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the Stanek window (l,b=[0.25,-2.15]) from two epochs approximately two years apart. This dataset is adjacent to the provisional Wide-field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) microlensing field. Proper motions are measured for approximately 115,000 stars down to 28th mag in V band and 25th mag in I band, with accuracies of 0.5 mas yr$^{-1}$ (20 km s$^{-1}$) at I $\approx$ 21. A cut on the longitudinal proper motion $μ_l$ allows us to separate disk and bulge populations and…
In this work, we study the magnetic field morphology of selected star-forming clouds spread over the galactic latitude ($b$) range, $-10^\circ$ to $10^\circ$. The polarimetric observation of clouds CB24, CB27 and CB188 are conducted to study the magnetic field geometry of those clouds from ARIES, Manora Peak, Nainital, India. These observations are combined with those of 14 further low latitude clouds available in the literature. Analyzing the polarimetric data of 17 clouds, we find that the alignment between the envelope magnetic field ($θ_{B}^{env}$) and Galactic plane ($θ_{GP}$) of the low-…
The non-thermal filament (NTF) radio structures clustered within a few hundred parsecs of the Galactic Center (GC) are apparently unique to this region of the Galaxy. Recent radio images of the GC using MeerKAT at 1 GHz have revealed a multitude of faint, previously unknown NTF bundles (NTFBs), some of which are comprised of as many as 10 or more individual filaments. In this work we present Very Large Array (VLA) observations at C- and X-bands (4 - 12 GHz) at arcsecond-scale resolutions of three of these newly-discovered NTFBs, all located at southern Galactic latitudes. These observations al…
We have used data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer to study the different components of the diffuse ultraviolet background in the region between the Galactic latitudes 70-80 degree. We find an offset at zero dust column density (E(B - V) = 0) of $240 \pm 18$ photon units in the FUV (1539A) and $394 \pm 37$ photon units in the NUV (2316A). This is approximately half of the total observed radiation with the remainder divided between an extragalactic component of $114 \pm 18$ photon units in the FUV and $194 \pm 37$ photon units in the NUV and starlight scattered by Galactic dust at high latitu…
Resolving the phase structure of neutral hydrogen (HI) is crucial for understanding the life cycle of the interstellar medium (ISM). However, accurate measurements of HI temperature and density are limited by the availability of background continuum sources for measuring HI absorption. Here we test the use of deep learning for extracting HI properties over large areas without optical depth information. We train a 1D convolutional neural network using synthetic observations of 3D numerical simulations of the ISM to predict the fraction of cold neutral medium (f_CNM) and the correction to the op…
