Nowadays, Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are popularly known as they can reduce traffic and road accidents. These networks need several security requirements, such as anonymity, data authentication, confidentiality, traceability and cancellation of offending users, unlinkability, integrity, undeniability and access control. Authentication is one of the most important security requirements in these networks. So many authentication schemes have been proposed up to now. One of the well-known techniques to provide users authentication in these networks is the authentication based on the smartcard (ASC). In this paper, we propose an ASC scheme that not only provides necessary security requirements such as anonymity, traceability and unlinkability in the VANETs but also is more efficient than the other schemes in the literatures.
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) improves traffic management and reduce the amount of road accidents by providing safety applications. However, VANETs are vulnerable to variety of security attacks from malicious entities. An authentication is an integral a neighborhood of trust establishment and secure communications between vehicles. The Road-side Unit (RSU) evaluates trust-value and the Agent Trusted Authority (ATA) helps in computing the trust-value of auto supported its reward-points. The communication between nodes is enhanced, this can reduce 50% of road accidents. The security of the …
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are attractive scenarios that can improve the traffic situation and provide convenient services for drivers and passengers via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. However, there are still many security challenges in the traffic information transmission, especially in the intense traffic case. For ensuring the privacy of users and traceability of vehicles, we propose a traceable concurrent data anonymous transmission scheme for heterogeneous VANETs. The scheme is based on certificateless aggregate signcryption, so it sup…
Vehicular ad hoc networks allow vehicles to connect themselves as networks so that cars could communicate with each other. This paper introduces an anonymous communication scheme providing integrity protection, multi-level privacy and auditability. The scheme is based on a certificateless ring signature proposed in this paper, which is contributed to reduce the length of the signature and simplify the key management. In our scheme, vehicles can compose the anonymous group without the help of road-side infrastructure or central authority. The computation overhead is close to a normal signature …
The public key infrastructure (PKI) based authentication protocol provides the basic security services for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). However, trust and privacy are still open issues due to the unique characteristics of vehicles. It is crucial for VANETs to prevent internal vehicles from broadcasting forged messages while simultaneously protecting the privacy of each vehicle against tracking attacks. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based anonymous reputation system (BARS) to break the linkability between real identities and public keys to preserve privacy. The certificate and r…
With the rapid development of vehicular ad hoc Network (VANET), it is gaining significant popularity and receiving increasing attentions from academics and industry in security and efficiency. To address security and efficiency issues, a self-authentication and deniable efficient group key agreement protocol is proposed in this paper. This scheme establishes a group between road-side unit (RSU) and vehicles by using self-authentication without certification authority, and enhances certification efficiency by using group key (GK) transmission method. At the same time, to avoid the attacker to a…
Vehicular ad-hoc networks, where traffic information is distributed from many sources to many destinations, require data authentication mechanisms to detect any malicious behavior of users, such as modification or replay attacks. In this paper we propose a new data aggregation protocol that uses probabilistic verification to detect such attack attempts a posteriori in an efficient way, with minimal overhead and delay. The algorithm also contains an additional security mechanism based on reactive groups created on demand, which ensure a priori that vehicles generate trustworthy information. Acc…
The practical deployment of vehicular networks is still a pending issue. In this paper we describe a new self-organized method of authentication for VANETs, which allows their widespread, fast and secure implementation. Our proposal does not involve any central certification authority because the nodes themselves certify the validity of public keys of the other nodes. On the one hand we propose an algorithm that each node must use to choose the public key certificates for its local store. On the other hand, we also describe a new node authentication method based on a cryptographic protocol inc…
Revocation of dishonest users is not an easy problem. This paper proposes a new way to manage revocation of pseudonyms in vehicular ad-hoc networks when using identity-based authentication to increase efficiency and security through certificateless authentication. In order to improve the performance of revocation lists, this paper proposes the use of a data structure based on authenticated dynamic hash k-ary trees and the frequency with which revoked pseudonyms are consulted. The use of the knowledge about the frequency of consultation of revoked pseudonyms allows an easier access to the most …
The pervasiveness of wireless communication recently gave mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) a significant researchers' attention, due to its innate capabilities of instant communication in many time and mission critical applications. However, its natural advantages of networking in civilian and military environments make them vulnerable to security threats. Support for an anonymity in MANET is an orthogonal to security critical challenge we faced in this paper. We propose a new anonymous authentication protocol for mobile ad hoc networks enhanced with a distributed reputation system. The main its…
A Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) is a form of Mobile ad-hoc network, to provide communications among nearby vehicles and between vehicles and nearby fixed roadside equipment. The key operation in VANETs is the broadcast of messages. Consequently, the vehicles need to make sure that the information has been sent by an authentic node in the network. VANETs present unique challenges such as high node mobility, real-time constraints, scalability, gradual deployment and privacy. No existent technique addresses all these requirements. In particular, both inter-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside wirel…
In the scope of VANETs, nature of exchanged safety/warning messages renders itself highly location dependent as it is usually for incident reporting. Thus, vehicles are required to periodically exchange beacon messages that include speed, time and GPS location information. In this paper paper, we present a physical layer assisted message authentication scheme that uses Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation to verify the message originator location based on the claimed location information. Within the considered vehicular communication settings, fundamental limits of AoA estimation are developed in…
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are a particular subclass of mobile ad hoc networks that raise a number of security challenges, notably from the way users authenticate the network. Authentication technologies based on existing security policies and access control rules in such networks assume full trust on Roadside Unit (RSU) and authentication servers. The disclosure of authentication parameters enables user's trace-ability over the network. VANETs' trusted entities (e.g. RSU) can utilize such information to track a user traveling behavior, violating user privacy and anonymity. In this pap…
Recently, Mun et al. analyzed Wu et al.'s authentication scheme and proposed a enhanced anonymous authentication scheme for roaming service in global mobility networks. However, through careful analysis, we find that Mun et al.'s scheme is vulnerable to impersonation attacks, off-line password guessing attacks and insider attacks, and cannot provide user friendliness, user's anonymity, proper mutual authentication and local verification. To remedy these weaknesses, in this paper we propose a novel anonymous authentication scheme for roaming service in global mobility networks. Security and per…
Anonymous access authentication schemes provide users with massive application services while protecting the privacy of users' identities. The identity protection schemes in 3G and 4G are not suitable for 5G anonymous access authentication due to complex computation and pseudonym asynchrony. In this paper, we consider mobile devices with limited resources in the 5G network and propose an anonymous access authentication scheme without the Public Key Infrastructure. The anonymous access authentication scheme provides users with variable shard pseudonyms to protect users' identities asynchronousl…
The recent worldwide introduction of RemoteID (RID) regulations forces all Unmanned Aircrafts (UAs), a.k.a. drones, to broadcast in plaintext on the wireless channel their identity and real-time location, for accounting and monitoring purposes. Although improving drones' monitoring and situational awareness, the RID rule also generates significant privacy concerns for UAs' operators, threatened by the ease of tracking of UAs and related confidentiality and privacy concerns connected with the broadcasting of plaintext identity information. In this paper, we propose $A^2RID$, a protocol suite fo…
Privacy and security are often intertwined. For example, identity theft is rampant because we have become accustomed to authentication by identification. To obtain some service, we provide enough information about our identity for an unscrupulous person to steal it (for example, we give our credit card number to Amazon.com). One of the consequences is that many people avoid e-commerce entirely due to privacy and security concerns. The solution is to perform authentication without identification. In fact, all on-line actions should be as anonymous as possible, for this is the only way to guaran…
Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged as a key technology for next generation wireless broadband networks showing rapid progress and inspiring numerous compelling applications. A WMN comprises of a set of mesh routers (MRs) and mesh clients (MCs), where MRs are connected to the Internet backbone through the Internet gateways (IGWs). The MCs are wireless devices and communicate among themselves over possibly multi-hop paths with or without the involvement of MRs. User privacy and security have been primary concerns in WMNs due to their peer-to-peer network topology, shared wireless medium,…
Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an intelligent application of IoT in smart transportation, which can make intelligent decisions for passengers. It has drawn extensive attention to improve traffic safety and efficiency and create a more comfortable driving and riding environment. Vehicular cloud computing is a variant of mobile cloud computing, which can process local information quickly. The cooperation of the Internet and vehicular cloud can make the communication more efficient in IoV. In this paper, we mainly focus on the secure communication between vehicles and roadside units. We first prop…
For many years, the pay-TV system has attracted a lot of users. Users have recently expressed the desire to use mobile TV or mobile payment via anonymous protocols. The mobile users have also received their services over cellular communications networks. Each mobile device receives services from each head end systems. With increasing numbers of users and the expansion of Internet, user's privacy has become crucial important. When a device leaves the head end system's range, it must receive services from another head end system. In this paper, we review Chen et al's scheme and we highlight some…
The amount of information generated grows as more and more sensor and IoT devices are deployed in smart cities. It is of utmost importance for us to consider the privacy data leakage and compromised identity from both outside adversaries and inside abuse of data access privilege. The security assumption of the system should not solely rely on the fact that permission and access control were being implemented correctly. Quite the contrary, a system can be designed in a way that user's identity data and usage traces are not leaked even if the system had been compromised. Based upon our previous …
Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are one of the most important components in an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which aims to provide information communication between vehicles. A safety-critical vehicular communication requires security, privacy, auditability, and efficiency. To satisfy these requirements simultaneously, several conditional privacy-preserving authentication schemes are proposed by employing ring signature. However, these methods have been paid too little attention to the issues like \textit{how to choose the valid ring members} or \textit{how to set up a ring}. In …
Anonymous Single-Sign-On authentication schemes have been proposed to allow users to access a service protected by a verifier without revealing their identity which has become more important due to the introduction of strong privacy regulations. In this paper we describe a new approach whereby anonymous authentication to different verifiers is achieved via authorisation tags and pseudonyms. The particular innovation of our scheme is authentication can only occur between a user and its designated verifier for a service, and the verification cannot be performed by any other verifier. The benefit…

In this paper, we propose a Sybil attack detection scheme using proofs of work and location. The idea is that each road side unit (RSU) issues a signed time-stamped tag as a proof for the vehicle's anonymous location. Proofs sent from multiple consecutive RSUs is used to create vehicle trajectory which is used as vehicle anonymous identity. Also, one RSU is not able to issue trajectories for vehicles, rather the contributions of several RSUs are needed. By this way, attackers need to compromise an infeasible number of RSUs to create fake trajectories. Moreover, upon receiving the proof of loca…
A smart-card-based user authentication scheme for wireless sensor networks (hereafter referred to as a SCA-WSN scheme) is designed to ensure that only users who possess both a smart card and the corresponding password are allowed to gain access to sensor data and their transmissions. Despite many research efforts in recent years, it remains a challenging task to design an efficient SCA-WSN scheme that achieves user anonymity. The majority of published SCA-WSN schemes use only lightweight cryptographic techniques (rather than public-key cryptographic techniques) for the sake of efficiency, and …
Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) facilitate vehicles to wirelessly communicate with neighboring vehicles as well as with roadside units (RSUs). However, the existence of inaccurate information within the network can cause traffic aberrations and also disrupt the normal functioning of any traffic monitoring system. Thus, determining the credibility of broadcast messages originating from the region of interest (ROI) is crucial under a malicious environment. Additionally, a breach of privacy involving a vehicle's private information, such as location and velocity, can lead to severe consequence…
Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is mainly launched by the transmission requirements between devices for specific applications such as Proximity Services in Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks, and each application will form a group of devices for the network-covered and network-absent D2D communications. Although there are many privacy concerns in D2D communication, they have not been well-addressed in current communication standards. This work introduces network-covered and network-absent authenticated key exchange protocols for D2D communications to guarantee accountable group…
Among the available communication systems, vehicular networks are emerging as one of the most promising and yet most challenging instantiations of mobile ad-hoc network technologies. The deployment of such networks in large scale requires the enforcement of stringent security mechanisms that need to abide by the technical, societal, legal, and economical requirements of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Authentication is an effective process for validating user identity in vehicular netoworks. However, it cannot guarantee the network security by itself. Available industrial standards do not …
Dynamic ID-based remote user authentication schemes ensure efficient and anonymous mutual authentication between entities. In 2013, Khan et al. proposed an improved dynamic ID-based authentication scheme to overcome the security flaws of Wang et al.'s authentication scheme. Recently, Sun and Cao showed that Khan et al. does not satisfies the claim of the user's privacy and proposed an efficient authentication scheme with user anonymity. The Sun and Cao's scheme achieve improvement over Khan et al.'s scheme in both privacy and performance point of view. Unfortunately, we identify that Sun and C…
With the development of artificial intelligence and self-driving, vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) has become an irreplaceable part of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). However, the traditional network of the ground cannot meet the requirements of transmission, processing, and storage among vehicles. Under this circumstance, integrating space and air nodes into the whole network can provide comprehensive traffic information and reduce the transmission delay. The high mobility and low latency in the Space-Air-Ground Integrated Network (SAGIN) put forward higher requirements for sec…
Traffic management, road safety, and environmental impact are important issues in the modern world. These challenges are addressed by the application of sensing, control and communication methods of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). A part of ITS is a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) which means a wireless network of vehicles. However, communication among vehicles in a VANET exposes several security threats which need to be studied and addressed. In this review, firstly, the basic flow of VANET is illustrated focusing on its communication methods, architecture, characteristics, standar…
In spite of progress in securing Vehicular Communication (VC) systems, there is no consensus on how to distribute Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs). The main challenges lie exactly in (i) crafting an efficient and timely distribution of CRLs for numerous anonymous credentials, pseudonyms, (ii) maintaining strong privacy for vehicles prior to revocation events, even with honest-but-curious system entities, (iii) and catering to computation and communication constraints of on-board units with intermittent connectivity to the infrastructure. Relying on peers to distribute the CRLs is a double-e…
Authentication and encryption are traditionally treated as two separate processes in wireless networks, this paper integrates user authentication into the process of solving eavesdropping attacks. A compressed sensing (CS)-based framework is proposed which manipulates the measurement matrix of CS to safeguard secure computationally. The framework is also capable of continuous authentication and transmission error correction and is robust to data loss. In detail, this paper first proposes an algorithm to generate a 2D key which depends on the physical property of communication channels. The 2D …
Social networking sites supporting federated identities offer a convenient and increasingly popular mechanism for cross-site authentication. Unfortunately, they also exacerbate many privacy and tracking risks. We propose Crypto-Book, an anonymizing layer enabling cross-site authentication while reducing these risks. Crypto-Book relies on a set of independently managed servers that collectively assign each social network identity a public/private keypair. Only an identity's owner learns all the private key shares, and can therefore construct the private key, while all participants can obtain an…
Internet of Vehicles(IoV) is increasingly used as a medium to propagate critical information via establishing connections between entities such as vehicles and infrastructures. During message transmission, privacy-preserving authentication is considered as the first line of defence against attackers and malicious information. To achieve a more secure and stable communication environment, ever-increasing numbers of blockchain-based authentication schemes are proposed. At first glance, existing approaches provide robust architectures and achieve transparent authentication. However, in these sche…
Today, Internet of Things (IoT) technology is being increasingly popular which is applied in a wide range of industry sectors such as healthcare, transportation and some critical infrastructures. With the widespread applications of IoT technology, people's lives have changed dramatically. Due to its capabilities of sensitive data-aware, information collection, communication and processing, it raises security and privacy concerns. Moreover, a malicious attacker may impersonate a legitimate user, which may cause security threat and violation privacy. In allusion to the above problems, we propose…
With the ubiquitous advancement in smart medical devices and systems, the potential of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) network is evolving in modern healthcare systems. The medical professionals (doctors, nurses, or medical experts) can access vitals and sensitive physiological information about the patients and provide proper treatment to improve the quality of life through the RPM network. However, the wireless nature of communication in the RPM network makes it challenging to design an efficient mechanism for secure communication. Many authentication schemes have been proposed in recent yea…

Wireless body area network(WBAN) is becoming more popular in recent years. Security and privacy of this network is the major concern for the researchers. Most of the WBAN sensors currently available in the market uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol for connection. But the BLE protocol has an inherent security flaw due to its weak pairing protocol which can be easily be exploited by an attacker. In this paper, a different pairing protocol based on Lightweight Anonymous Authentication Protocol (LWAA) is proposed. Proposed protocol has a 3.8% power overhead over traditional BLE. But this is …
