In this work we study the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators driven by external forces in complex modular networks. The motivation is the neuronal dynamics that takes place during information processing in the neural cortex. The neuron organization is modular, with clusters associated to different functions and brain structures, and need to constantly respond to external stimuli. We study the behavior of forced Kuramoto oscillators where only a fraction of them is subjected to a periodic external force. When all oscillators receive the external drive the system always synchronize with the periodic force if its intensity is sufficiently large. We show that the conditions for global synchronization depend on the fraction of nodes being forced and on network topology, strength of internal couplings and intensity of external forcing. We develop numerical and analytical calculations for the critical force for global synchronization as a function of the fraction of forced oscillators. As an application we study the response of the electric junction \textit{C. elegans} network to external stimuli using the partially forced Kuramoto model. Stimuli were applied to topological modules, to ganglia, specified by their anatomical localization, and to the functional groups (sensory and motoneurons). We found that topological modules do not contain purely anamotical groups or functional classes, and that stimulating different classes of neurons lead to very different responses, measured in terms of synchronization and phase velocity correlations. In all cases the modular structure hindered full synchronization, protecting the system from seizures. The responses to stimuli applied to topological and functional modules showed pronounced patterns of correlation or anti-correlation with other modules that were not observed when the stimulus was applied to a ganglion with mixed functional neurons.
We study numerically synchronization phenomena of spatiotemporal structures, including chimera states, in a two layer network of nonlocally coupled nonlinear chaotic discrete-time systems. Each of the interacting ensembles represents a one layer ring network of nonlocally coupled logistic maps in the chaotic regime. The coupled networks differ in their control parameters that enables one to observe distinct spatiotemporal dynamics in the networks when there is no coupling between them. We explore in detail external and mutual synchronization of chimera structures. The identity of synchronous s…
In this Letter we investigate networks that have been optimized to realize a trade-off between enhanced synchronization and cost of wire to connect the nodes in space. Analyzing the evolved arrangement of nodes in space and their corresponding network topology a class of small world networks characterized by spatial and network modularity is found. More precisely, for low cost of wire optimal configurations are characterized by a division of nodes into two spatial groups with maximum distance from each other, whereas network modularity is low. For high cost of wire, the nodes organize into sev…
We study the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators on networks where only a fraction of them is subjected to a periodic external force. When all oscillators receive the external drive the system always synchronize with the periodic force if its intensity is sufficiently large. Our goal is to understand the conditions for global synchronization as a function of the fraction of nodes being forced and how these conditions depend on network topology, strength of internal couplings and intensity of external forcing. Numerical simulations show that the force required to synchronize the network wit…
Recent studies have pointed out the importance of transient synchronization between widely distributed neural assemblies to understand conscious perception. These neural assemblies form intricate networks of neurons and synapses whose detailed map for mammals is still unknown and far from our experimental capabilities. Only in a few cases, for example the C. elegans, we know the complete mapping of the neuronal tissue or its mesoscopic level of description provided by cortical areas. Here we study the process of transient and global synchronization using a simple model of phase-coupled oscilla…
Synchronization plays a key role in information processing in neuronal networks. Response of specific groups of neurons are triggered by external stimuli, such as visual, tactile or olfactory inputs. Neurons, however, can be divided into several categories, such as by physical location, functional role or topological clustering properties. Here we study the response of the electric junction C. elegans network to external stimuli using the partially forced Kuramoto model and applying the force to specific groups of neurons. Stimuli were applied to topological modules, obtained by the ModuLand p…
Phase synchronization between collective oscillations exhibited by two weakly interacting groups of non-identical phase oscillators with internal and external global sinusoidal coupling of the groups is analyzed theoretically. Coupled amplitude equations describing the collective oscillations of the oscillator groups are obtained by using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and then coupled phase equations for the collective oscillations are derived by phase reduction of the amplitude equations. The collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of macroscopic phase differences between…
Changes in the level of synchronization and desynchronization in coupled oscillator systems due to an external stimulus is called event related synchronization or desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Such changes occur in real life systems where the collective activity of the entities of a coupled system is affected by some external influence. In order to understand the role played by the external influence in the occurrence of ERD and ERS, we study a system of coupled nonlinear oscillators in the presence of an external stimulus signal. We find that the phenomena of ERS and ERD are generic and occur …
The model of a non-autonomous memristor-based oscillator with a line of equilibria is studied. A numerical simulation of the system driven by a periodical force is combined with a theoretical analysis by means of the quasi-harmonic reduction. Both two mechanisms of synchronization are demonstrated: capture of the phase and frequency of oscillations and suppression by an external signal. Classification of undamped oscillations in an autonomous system with a line of equilibria as a special kind of self-sustained oscillations is concluded due to the possibility to observe the effect of frequency-…
We study the phase synchronization between collective rhythms of fully locked oscillator groups. For weakly interacting groups of two oscillators with global sinusoidal coupling, we analytically derive the collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of the collective phase difference between the groups. We demonstrate that the groups can exhibit anti-phase collective synchronization in spite of microscopic in-phase external coupling and vice versa.
We consider a canonical ensemble of synchronization-optimized networks of identical oscillators under external noise. By performing a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation using the Kirchhoff index, i.e., the sum of the inverse eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix (as a graph Hamiltonian of the network), we construct more than 1,000 different synchronization-optimized networks. We then show that the transition from star to core-periphery structure depends on the connectivity of the network, and is characterized by the node degree variance of the synchronization-optimized ensemble. We find …
A major challenge in neuroscience is posed by the need for relating the emerging dynamical features of brain activity with the underlying modular structure of neural connections, hierarchically organized throughout several scales. The spontaneous emergence of coherence and synchronization across such scales is crucial to neural function, while its anomalies often relate to pathological conditions. Here we provide a numerical study of synchronization dynamics in the human connectome network. Our purpose is to provide a detailed characterization of the recently uncovered broad dynamic regime, in…
We consider the problem of global synchronization in a large random network of Kuramoto oscillators where some of them are subject to an external periodically driven force. We explore a recently proposed dimensional reduction approach and introduce an effective two-dimensional description for the problem. From the dimensionally reduced model, we obtain analytical predictions for some critical parameters necessary for the onset of a globally synchronized state in the system. Moreover, the low dimensional model also allows us to introduce an optimization scheme for the problem. Our main conclusi…
In this paper the effects of external links on the synchronization performance of community networks, especially on the competition between individual community and the whole network, are studied in detail. The study is organized from two aspects: the number or portion of external links and the connecting strategy of external links between different communities. It is found that increasing the number of external links will enhance the global synchronizability but degrade the ynchronization performance of individual community before some critical point. After that the individual community will …
Nonlinear oscillators can mutually synchronize when they are driven by common external impulses. Two important scenarios are (i) synchronization resulting from phase locking of each oscillator to regular periodic impulses and (ii) noise-induced synchronization caused by Poisson random impulses, but their difference has not been fully quantified. Here we analyze a pair of uncoupled oscillators subject to common random impulses with gamma-distributed intervals, which can be smoothly interpolated between regular periodic and random Poisson impulses. Their dynamics are charac- terized by phase dis…
Swarlamators are particles capable of synchronize and swarm. Here we study the effects produced by an external periodic stimulus over a system of swarmalators that move in two dimensions. When the particles are fixed and interact with equal strength (Kuramoto oscillators) their phases tend to synchronize and lock to the external stimulus if its intensity is sufficiently large. Here we show that in a system of swarmalators the force also shifts the phases and angular velocities leading to synchronization with the external frequency. However, the correlation between phase and spatial location de…
A new collective behavior of resonant synchronization is discovered and the ability to retrieve information from brain memory is proposed based on this mechanism. We use modified Kuramoto phase oscillator to simulate the dynamics of a single neuron in self-oscillation state, and investigate the collective responses of a neural network, which is composed of $N$ globally coupled Kuramoto oscillators, to the external stimulus signals in a critical state just below the synchronization threshold of Kuramoto model. The input signals at different driving frequencies, which are used to denote differen…
We study synchronization in a two-node network built out of the smallest possible self-sustained oscillator: a spin 1. We first demonstrate that phase locking between the quantum oscillators can be achieved, even for limit cycles that cannot be synchronized to an external semi-classical signal. Building upon the analytical description of the system, we then clarify the relation between quantum synchronization and the generation of entanglement. These findings establish the spin-based architecture as a promising platform for understanding synchronization in complex quantum networks.
We study synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators in strongly modular networks in which the structure of the network inside each community is averaged. We find that the dynamics of the interacting communities can be described as an ensemble of coupled planar oscillators. In the limit of a large number of communities, we find a low dimensional description of the level of synchronization between the communities. In this limit, we describe bifurcations between incoherence, local synchrony, and global synchrony. We compare the predictions of this simplified model with simulations of heterogeneous n…

We introduce an easily computable topological measure which locates the effective crossover between segregation and integration in a modular network. Segregation corresponds to the degree of network modularity, while integration is expressed in terms of the algebraic connectivity of an associated hyper-graph. The rigorous treatment of the simplified case of cliques of equal size that are gradually rewired until they become completely merged, allows us to show that this topological crossover can be made to coincide with a dynamical crossover from cluster to global synchronization of a system of…
We investigate the synchronization phenomenon between two Spin-transfer Torque Nano-Oscillators (STNOs) of different frequencies in two pillar systems under vortex configuration detunings or driving frequencies. The oscillators' mutual synchronization occurs through magnetic dipolar interaction. Our micromagnetic simulations show that an amplitude fluctuation referred to as $Γ_p$ has a significant impact on determining the synchronization frequency. The evolution of frequency and amplitude fluctuation rate in two different oscillator sizes versus external perpendicular field are compared and d…
Community structure can naturally emerge in paths to synchronization, and scratching it from the paths is a tough issue that accounts for the diverse dynamics of synchronization. In this paper, with assumption that the synchronization on complex networks is made up of local and collective processes, we proposed a scheme to lock the local synchronization (phase locking) at a stable state meanwhile suppress the collective synchronization based on Kuramoto model. Through this scheme, the network dynamics only contains the local synchronization, which suggests that the nodes in the same community …
The synchronization of different $γ$-rhythms arising in different brain areas has been implicated in various cognitive functions. Here, we focus on the effect of the ubiquitous neuronal heterogeneity on the synchronization of PING (pyramidal-interneuronal network gamma) and ING (interneuronal network gamma) rhythms. The synchronization properties of rhythms depends on the response of their collective phase to external input. We therefore determined the macroscopic phase-response curve for finite-amplitude perturbations (fmPRC), using numerical simulation of all-to-all coupled networks of integ…
Spin torque oscillators placed onto a nonmagnetic heavy metal show synchronized auto-oscillations due to the coupling originating from spin Hall magnetoresistance effect. Here, we study a system having two spin torque oscillators under the effect of the spin Hall torque, and show that switching the external current direction enables us to control the phase difference of the synchronization between in-phase and antiphase.
We report the first experimental demonstration of quantum synchronization. This is achieved by performing a digital simulation of a single spin-$1$ limit-cycle oscillator on the quantum computers of the IBM Q System. Applying an external signal to the oscillator, we verify typical features of quantum synchronization and demonstrate an interference-based quantum synchronization blockade. Our results show that state-of-the-art noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers are powerful enough to implement realistic dissipative quantum systems. Finally, we discuss limitations of current quantum hardw…
We describe synchronization transitions in an ensemble of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, and two sources of disorder - diversity of intrinsic oscillatory frequencies and external independent noise. Based on the self-consistent formulation, we derive analytic solutions for different synchronous states. We report on various non-trivial transitions from incoherence to synchrony where possible scenarios include: simple supercritical transition (similar to classical Kuramoto model), subcritical transition with large area of bistability of incoherent and syn…
We study, both analytically and numerically, the dynamics of mechanical oscillators kept in motion by a feedback force, which is generated electronically from a signal produced by the oscillators themselves. This kind of self-sustained systems may become standard in the design of frequency-control devices at microscopic scales. Our analysis is thus focused on their synchronization properties under the action of external forces, and on the joint dynamics of two to many coupled oscillators. Existence and stability of synchronized motion are assessed in terms of the mechanical properties of indiv…
We study synchronization of two dissipatively coupled Van der Pol oscillators in the quantum regime. Due to quantum noise strict frequency locking is absent and is replaced by a crossover from weak to strong frequency entrainment. We discuss the differences to the behavior of one quantum Van der Pol oscillator subject to an external drive. Moreover, we describe a possible experimental realization of two coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators in an optomechanical setting.
Synchronization is an important collective phenomenon in interacting oscillatory agents. Many functional features of the brain are related to synchronization of neurons. The type of synchronization transition that may occur (explosive vs. continuous) has been the focus of intense attention in recent years, mostly in the context of phase oscillator models for which collective behavior is independent of the mean-value of natural frequency. However, synchronization properties of biologically-motivated neural models depend on the firing frequencies. In this study we report a systematic study of ga…
We study synchronization of sinusoidally coupled phase oscillators on networks with modular structure and a large number of oscillators in each community. Of particular interest is the hierarchy of local and global synchrony, i.e., synchrony within and between communities, respectively. Using the recent ansatz of Ott and Antonsen, we find that the degree of local synchrony can be determined from a set of coupled low-dimensional equations. If the number of communities in the network is large, a low-dimensional description of global synchrony can be also found. Using these results, we study bifu…
