We theoretically investigate nonlinear localized excitations in a Heisenberg honeycomb ferromagnet with a second neighbour Dzialozinskii-Moriya interaction, which has been proved to possess the topological band structure. Using the time-dependent variational principle, we obtain the equation of motion for the system in the Glauber coherent-state representation. By means of the semidiscrete multiple-scale method, different types of nonlinear localized excitations are gotten. Our results show that both two-dimensional discrete breathers and bulk gap solitons may occur in the Heisenberg honeycomb ferromagnet.
We investigate the properties of magnon edge states in a ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with armchair boundaries. In contrast with fermionic graphene, we find novel edge states due to the missing bonds along the boundary sites. After introducing an external on-site potential at the outermost sites we find that the energy spectra of the edge states are tunable. Additionally, when a non-trivial gap is induced, we find that some of the edge states are topologically protected and also tunable. Our results may explain the origin of the novel edge states recently observed in photonic lattices. We a…
We report the magneto-transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in a modulation-doped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure subjected to a lateral potential with honeycomb geometry. Periodic oscillations of the magneto-resistance and a delocalized-localized transition are shown by applying a gate voltage. We argue that electrons in such artificial-graphene lattices offer a promising approach for the simulation of quantum phases dictated by Coulomb interactions.
In this work, the spin wave calculations were carried out using the Heisenberg Hamiltonian to study the allowed spin waves of zigzag and armchair edged stripes for ferromagnetic nanodots arrayed in a 2D honeycomb lattice \cite{Selim2011}. The Hamiltonian is used to construct the $\mathbf{E}$ matrix which encodes the exchange flow of magnons in the stripes. It is found that the allowed spin wave modes are the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{E}$ matrix and therefore it is used to study the effects of the stripe width, edge exchange, the edge uniaxial anisotropy, and impurities on the allowed spin wa…
In two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets, anisotropy is essential for the magnetic ordering as dictated by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. But when competing anisotropies are present, the phase transition becomes nontrivial. Here, utilizing highly sensitive susceptometry of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy, we probe the spin correlations of ABC-stacked CrBr3 under zero magnetic field. We identify a plateau feature in susceptibility above the critical temperature (Tc) in thick samples. It signifies a crossover regime induced by the competition between easy-plane intralayer…
In this work, the tridiagonal method is used to distinguish between edges modes and area modes to study the edge sites properties effect on edge localized states of semi-infinite zigzag 2D honeycomb graphene sheet. The results show a realistic behavior for the dependance of edge localized states of zigzag graphene on the edge sites properties which explaining the experimental results of measured local density of states at the edge of graphene, while at the same time removing the inconsistence between the semiconductor behavior found in the experimental data for fabricated GNRs and the expected…
We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in a wide class of three dimensional (3D) honeycomb lattices with ferromagnetic ground states. It is found that they host nodal ring magnon excitations. These rings locate on the same plane in the momentum space. The rings can be gapped by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions to form two Weyl points with opposite charges. We explicitly discuss these physics in the simplest 3D honeycomb lattice, the hyperhoneycomb lattice and show drumhead and arc surface states in the nodal ring and Weyl phases, respectively, due to the bulk-boundary…
We report the experimental and theoretical characterization of the angular-dependent spin dynamics in arrays of ferromagnetic nanodisks arranged on a honeycomb lattice. The magnetic field and microwave frequency dependence, measured by broadband ferromagnetic resonance, reveal a rich spectrum of modes that is strongly affected by the microstate of the network. Based on symmetry arguments with respect to the external field, we show that certain parts of the ferromagnetic network contribute to the detected signal. A comparison of the experimental data with micromagnetic simulations reveals that …
Ferromagnetic honeycomb systems are known to exhibit a magnonic topological phase under the existence of the next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Motivated by the recent progress in the sublattice-specific control of magnetic anisotropy, we study the topological phase of magnon bands of honeycomb ferromagnetic monolayer and bilayer with the sublattice symmetry breaking due to the different anisotropy energy in the presence of the DMI. We show that there is a topological phase transition between the topological magnon insulator and the topologically trivial magnon phas…
We theoretically explore nonresonantly pumped polaritonic graphene, a system consisting of a honeycomb lattice of micropillars in the regime of strong light-matter coupling. We demonstrate that, depending on the parameters of the structure, such as intensity of the pump and coupling strength between the pillars, the system shows rich variety of macroscopic ordering, including analogs of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and resonant valence bond phases. Transitions between these phases are associated with dramatic reshaping of the spectrum of the system connected with spontaneous appearance of…
Lattice deformation resulting from elastic strain is known to spatially modulate the wave function overlap of the atoms on the lattice and can drastically alter the properties of the quasiparticles. Here we elaborate that a twist lattice deformation in two-dimensional honeycomb quantum magnet nanoribbons is equivalent to an elastic gauge field giving rise to magnon Landau quantization. When the ground state is ferromagnetic, dispersive Dirac-Landau levels are induced in the center of magnon bands, while for antiferromagnetic nanoribbons, the twist results in dispersive equidistant Landau level…
The honeycomb lattice in the cylinder geometry with zigzag edges, bearded edges, zigzag and bearded edges (zigzag-bearded), and armchair edges are studied. The tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor hoppings is used. Edge states are obtained analytically for these edges except the armchair edges. It is shown, however, that edge states for the armchair edges exist when the the system is anisotropic. These states have not been known previously. We also find strictly localized states, uniformly extended states and states with macroscopic degeneracy.
Search for higher-order topological insulators, characterized by topologically protected gapless boundary states of codimension higher than one, in bosonic systems has attracted growing interest. Here, we establish twisted bilayer honeycomb magnets as a new platform for hosting second-order topological magnon insulators (SOTMIs) without fine-tuning. We employ a simple, minimal Heisenberg spin model to describe misaligned bilayer sheets of honeycomb ferromagnetic magnets with a large commensurate twist angle. We found that the higher-order topology in this bilayer system shows a significant dep…
Properties of bulk and boundaries of materials can, in general, be quite different, both for topological and non-topological reasons. One of the simplest boundary problems to pose is the tight-binding problem of noninteracting electrons on a finite honeycomb lattice. Despite its simplicity, the problem is quite rich and directly related to the physics of graphene. We revisit this long-studied problem and present an analytical derivation of the electron spectrum and wave functions for graphene rectangular derivatives. We provide an exact analytical description of extended and localized states, …
The experimental observation of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in a kagomé lattice ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc) has inspired the search for topological magnon effects in various insulating ferromagnets that lack an inversion center allowing a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin-orbit interaction. The star lattice (also known as the decorated honeycomb lattice) ferromagnets is an ideal candidate for this purpose because it is a variant of the kagomé lattice with additional links that connect the up-pointing and down-pointing triangles. This gives rise to twice the unit cell of the kag…
In our previous study, a single-branch of ferromagnetic magnon with linear dispersion is shown to exist near the (uncompensated) zigzag edge for Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. Here we develop a field-theory description for the edge magnon and find its dynamics is captured by the one-dimensional relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is intriguing that the boundary field theory for the edge magnon is tied up with its bulk counterpart, described by the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. Furthermore, we also reveal how the parity symmetry relates evanescent modes on opposite edges in …
We derive the boundary condition for the Dirac equation corresponding to a tight-binding model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice terminated along an arbitary direction. Zigzag boundary conditions result generically once the boundary is not parallel to the bonds. Since a honeycomb strip with zigzag edges is gapless, this implies that confinement by lattice termination does not in general produce an insulating nanoribbon. We consider the opening of a gap in a graphene nanoribbon by a staggered potential at the edge and derive the corresponding boundary condition for the Dirac equation. We a…

We present a non-Hermitian Floquet model with topological edge states in real and imaginary band gaps. The model utilizes two stacked honeycomb lattices which can be related via four different types of non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry. Implementing the correct time-reversal symmetry provides us with either two counterpropagating edge states in a real gap, or a single edge state in an imaginary gap. The counterpropagating edge states allow for either helical or chiral transport along the lattice perimeter. In stark contrast, we find that the edge state in the imaginary gap does not propagat…
Spin-torque oscillators are strong candidates as nano-scale microwave generators and detectors. However, because of large amplitude-phase coupling (non-linearity), phase noise is enhanced over other linear auto-oscillators. One way to reduce nonlinearity is to use ferromagnetic layers as a resonator and excite them at localized spots, making a resonator-excitor pair. We investigated the excitation of oscillations in dipole-coupled ferromagnetic layers, driven by localized current at ferromagnetic nano-contacts. Oscillations possessed properties of optical-mode spin-waves and at low field ($\ap…
We establish experimentally a photonic super-honeycomb lattice (sHCL) by use of a cw-laser writing technique, and thereby demonstrate two distinct flatband line states that manifest as noncontractible-loop-states in an infinite flatband lattice. These localized states (straight and zigzag lines) observed in the sHCL with tailored boundaries cannot be obtained by superposition of conventional compact localized states because they represent a new topological entity in flatband systems. In fact, the zigzag-line states, unique to the sHCL, are in contradistinction with those previously observed in…
We investigate the ground and excited states of interacting electrons in a quantum point contact using exact diagonalization method. We find that strongly localized states in the point contact appear when a new conductance channel opens due to momentum mismatch. These localized states form magnetic impurity states which are stable in a finite regime of chemical potential and excitation energy. Interestingly, these magnetic impurities have ferromagnetic coupling, which shed light on the experimentally observed puzzling coexistence of Kondo correlation and spin filtering in a quantum point conta…
We obtain the exact one-spin intrinsic localized excitation in an anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain in a constant/variable external magnetic field with Gilbert damping included. We also point out how an appropriate magnitude spin current term in a spin transfer nano-oscillator (STNO) can stabilize the tendency towards damping. Further, we show how this excitation can be sustained in a recently suggested PT-symmetric magnetic nanostructure. We also briefly consider more general spin excitations.
We consider a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of metallic nanoparticles, each supporting a localized surface plasmon, and study the quantum properties of the collective plasmons resulting from the near field dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles. We analytically investigate the dispersion, the effective Hamiltonian and the eigenstates of the collective plasmons for an arbitrary orientation of the individual dipole moments. When the polarization points close to the normal to the plane the spectrum presents Dirac cones, similar to those present in the electronic band structure of graph…
We study the repulsive Hubbard model on an anisotropic honeycomb lattice within a mean-field and a slave-rotor treatment. In addition to the known semi-metallic and band-insulating phases, obtained for very weak interactions, and the anti-ferromagnetic phase at large couplings, various insulating spin-liquid phases develop at intermediate couplings. Whereas some of these spin liquids have gapless spinon excitations, a gapped one occupies a large region of the phase diagram and becomes the predominant phase for large hopping anisotropies. This phase can be understood in terms of weakly-coupled …
Topological spin textures, like skyrmions, have significant potential for spintronics applications. The main purpose of this work is to study further the topological spin textures on the discrete lattice with magnetic fields. In this work, we study a classical rotated Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, bond-dependent anisotropy and easy-axis anisotropy on the honeycomb lattice via Monte Carlo simulations. We mainly focus on phase diagrams with magnetic fields, especially on the non-trivial phases only existing with fields. The results demonstrate the emergence of field-in…
We theoretically study a spin Hamiltonian for spin-orbit-coupled ferromagnets on the honeycomb lattice. We find that the effective Hamiltonian for magnons, a quanta of spin-wave excitations from ordered states, is equivalent to the Haldane model for electrons in the honeycomb lattice, which indicates the nontrivial topology of the magnon bands and the existence of the associated edge state. We also take the Schwinger boson (or bosonic spinon) representations of spins that are applicable both to ordered and disordered phases. We show that the spinon bands within the mean-field treatment are top…
We study the collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons that emerge in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model. Vortex-vortex interactions are shown to lead to the lifting of the topological degeneracy and the energy is discovered to exhibit oscillations that are consistent with Majorana fermions being localized at vortex cores. We show how to construct states corresponding to the fusion channel degrees of freedom and obtain the energy gaps characterizing the stability of the topological low energy spectrum. To study the collective behavior of many vortices, we introduce an effective lattice…
In this article, we study the Schrödinger operator for a large class of periodic potentials with the symmetry of a hexagonal tiling of the plane. The potentials we consider are superpositions of localized potential wells, centered on the vertices of a regular honeycomb structure corresponding to the single electron model of graphene and its artificial analogues. We consider this Schrödinger operator in the regime of strong binding, where the depth of the potential wells is large. Our main result is that for sufficiently deep potentials, the lowest two Floquet-Bloch dispersion surfaces, when ap…
We describe the formation of highly degenerate, Landau-level-like amplified states in a strained photonic honeycomb lattice in which amplification breaks the sublattice symmetry. As a consequence of the parity anomaly, the zeroth Landau level is localized on a single sublattice and possesses an enhanced or reduced amplification rate. The spectral properties of the higher Landau levels are constrained by a generalized time-reversal symmetry. In the setting of two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers, the anomaly directly affects the mode selection and lasing threshold while in three-dimensional …
In this paper, by considering the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, we developed a theory for the intrinsic magnetic impurities (MIs) with the quasi-localized spin moments induced by the vacancies in graphene. Because the intrinsic MIs are characterized by the zero modes that are rthotropic to the itinerant electrons, their properties are much different from those of Anderson MIs with the well-localized spin moments.
A high-amplitude microwave magnetic field localized at the nanoscale is a desirable tool for various applications within the rapidly developing field of nanomagnetism. Here, we drive magnetization precession by coherent phonons in a metal ferromagnetic nanograting and generate ac-magnetic induction with extremely high amplitude (up to $10$ mT) and nanometer scale localization in the grating grooves. We trigger the magnetization by a laser pulse which excites localized surface acoustic waves. The developed technique has prospective uses in several areas of research and technology, including spa…
Based on first-principles calculations, we find novel valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall (VP-QAH) phases with a large gap-0.19 eV at an appropriate buckled angle and tunable topological phase transitions driven by the spontaneous magnetization within a half-hydrogenated Bi honeycomb monolayer. Depending on the magnetization orientation, four different phases can emerge, i.e., two VP-QAH phases, ferromagnetic insulating and metallic states. When the magnetization is reversed from the +$\mathbf{z}$ to -$\mathbf{z}$ directions, accompanying with a sign change in the Chern number (from -1 to …
We investigate the magnetization dynamics in circular Permalloy dots with spatially separated magnetic vortices interconnected by domain walls (double vortex state). We identify a novel type of quasi one-dimensional (1D) localised spin wave modes confined along domain walls, connecting each of two vortex cores with two edge half-antivortices. Variation of the mode eigenfrequencies with the dot size is in quantitative agreement with the developed model, which considers a dipolar origin of the localized 1D spin waves or so-called Winterś magnons [J.M. Winter, Phys.Rev. 124, 452 (1961)]. These sp…
As a topological insulator, the quantum Hall (QH) effect is indexed by the Chern and spin-Chern numbers $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{\text{spin}}$. We have only $\mathcal{C}_{\text{spin}}=0$ or $\pm \frac{1}{2}$ in conventional QH systems. We investigate QH effects in generic monolayer honeycomb systems. We search for spin-resolved characteristic patterns by exploring Hofstadter's butterfly diagrams in the lattice theory and fan diagrams in the low-energy Dirac theory. The Chern and spin-Chern numbers are calculated based on the bulk-edge correspondence in the lattice theory and on the Kubo…
We investigate the effect of an applied uniaxial strain on the ferromagnetic instability due to long- range Coulomb interaction between Dirac fermions in graphene. In case of undeformed graphene the ferromagnetic exchange instability occurs at sufficiently strong interaction within the Hartree- Fock approximation. In this work we show that using the same theoretical framework but with an additional applied uniaxial strain, the transition can occur for much weaker interaction, within the range in suspended graphene. We also study the consequence of strain on the formation of localized magnetic …
The spectrum of localized excitations in an anisotropic one-dimensional ferromagnet containing a spin cluster of arbitrary size is found exactly within the framework of the discrete Takeno-Homma model. The boundaries of stability of spin nanoclusters are determined, depending on their size, and the exchange and the anisotropy parameter of the ferromagnet. The problem of the spin waves scattering against nanoclusters is solved and explicit analytical expressions for their reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained. A model of a metamaterial consisting of weakly interacting magnetic m…
We study the sodium-iridates model on the honeycomb lattice with both BCS pairing potential and Hubbard interaction term. It is shown that this model can be exactly solved with appropriate choices of amplitude of pairing gaps, where the interacting terms are transformed to external field terms. The band structures of these exact solutions on both torus and cylinder geometry are discussed in great details. It is found that the ground state assumes an anti-ferromagnetic configuration, which breaks the time reversal symmetry spontaneously and renders the superconductor topologically trivial. On t…
We review recent work of the authors on the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation with a honeycomb lattice potential, $V$. In particular, we summarize results on (i) the existence of Dirac points, conical singularities in dispersion surfaces of $H_V=-Δ+V$ and (ii) the two-dimensional Dirac equations, as a large, but finite time, effective description of $e^{-iH_Vt}ψ_0$, for data $ψ_0$, which is spectrally localized at a Dirac point. We conclude with a formal derivation and discussion of the effective large time evolution for the nonlinear Schrödinger - Gross Pitaevskii equation for small ampli…
