The paper considers a scenario where a base station (BS), equipped with a large-scale antenna array, execute, using the same frequency range, both communication with mobile users and radar surveillance of the surrounding environment, relying on the ability of the massive MIMO array to synthesize multiple narrow beams. Based on an OFDM signaling format for both communication and surveillance tasks, a lower bound to the system achievable downlink rate is provided, along with a GLRT detection rule that does not require any knowledge about the target parameters. Then, a power allocation strategy is proposed, aimed at maximizing the fairness across the mobile users, while guaranteeing a minimum signal to interference ratio threshold value for the radar system. Numerical results show that the system performs effectively, and that the power control procedure helps in improving the system fairness.
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
Cell-free Massive MIMO systems consist of a large number of geographically distributed access points (APs) that serve users by coherent joint transmission. Downlink power allocation is important in these systems, to determine which APs should transmit to which users and with what power. If the system is implemented correctly, it can deliver a more uniform user performance than conventional cellular networks. To this end, previous works have shown how to perform system-wide max-min fairness power allocation when using maximum ratio precoding. In this paper, we first generalize this method to ar…
In a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) setup, where one side of the link comprises a linear antenna array, data can be transmitted over the direction of incident rays. Channel capacity for this setup is studied in this paper. We define two different setups; one when the energy is constant and equal over all rays, and one when available energy is evenly distributed over rays. For the latter, we show that there is an upper bound for channel capacity, regardless of the number of rays and antennas. Also, we have compared this setup with the legacy single-input single-output (SISO) AWGN channel.
We derive an expression for the capacity of massive multiple-input multiple-output Millimeter wave (mmWave) channel where the receiver is equipped with a variable-resolution Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) and a hybrid combiner. The capacity is shown to be a function of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for a given bit-allocation matrix and hybrid combiner. The condition for optimal ADC bit-allocation under a receiver power constraint is derived. This is derived based on the maximization of capacity with respect to bit-allocation matrix for a given channel, hybrid precoder, and hybrid combiner. …
This paper considers the power-efficient resource allocation problem in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN). The C-RAN architecture consists of a set of base-band units (BBUs) which are connected to a set of radio remote heads (RRHs) equipped with massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO), via fronthaul links with limited capacity. We formulate the power-efficient optimization problem in C-RANs as a joint resource allocation problem in order to jointly allocate the RRH and transmit power to each user, and fronthaul links and BBUs assign to active RRHs while satisfying the minimum required…
The use of multiple antennas in a transmit and receive antenna array for MIMO wireless communication allows the spatial degrees of freedom in rich scattering environments to be exploited. However, for line-of-sight (LOS) MIMO channels with uniform linear arrays (ULAs) at the transmitter and receiver, the antenna separations at the transmit and receive array need to be optimized to maximize the spatial degrees of freedom and the channel capacity. In this paper, we first revisit the derivation of the optimum antenna separation at the transmit and receive ULAs in a LOS MIMO system, and provide th…
We investigate asymptotic capacity limits of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with spatially correlated fading to understand when and how much transmit correlation helps the capacity. By imposing a structure on channel covariances (equivalently, transmit correlations at the transmitter side) of users, also referred to as \emph{transmit correlation diversity}, the impact of transmit correlation on the power gain of MIMO BCs is characterized in several regimes of system parameters, with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. Taking the cost for downlink …
In this paper, we derive an optimal ADC bit-allocation (BA) condition for a Single-User (SU) Millimeter wave (mmWave) Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Ma-MIMO) receiver equipped with variable-resolution ADCs under power constraint with the following criteria: (i) Minimizing the Mean Squared Error (MSE) of the received, quantized and combined symbol vector and (ii) Maximizing the capacity of the SU mmWave Ma-MIMO channel encompassing hybrid precoder and combiner. Optimal BA under both criteria results the same. We jointly design the hybrid combiner based on the SVD of the channel. We dem…
In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression for the combiner of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) receiver equipped with a minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) estimator. We propose using variable-bit-resolution analog-to- digital converters (ADC) across radio frequency (RF) paths. The combiner designed is a function of the quantization errors across each RF path. Using very low bit resolution ADCs (1-2bits) is a popular approach with massive MIMO receiver architectures to mitigate large power demands. We show that for certain channel conditions, adopting unequal bit resolution ADCs (e…
This letter proposes an energy efficient distributed worst case robust power allocation in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. We assume a bounded channel state information (CSI) error and all channels lie in some bounded uncertainty region. The problem is formulated as max-min one with infinite constraint. At first, we solve the inner problem with triangle and Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, then by fractional programming and successive convex approximation (SCA) technique problem transfers to a convex optimization. Finally closed form transmit power is obtained with distribution…
In this paper, we consider the transmit and receive antenna array gain of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we look at their dependence on the number of antennas in the array, and the antenna spacing for uniform linear and uniform circular arrays. It is known that the transmit array gain saturates at a certain antenna spacing, but the receive array gain had not been considered. With our physically consistent analysis based on the Multiport Communication Theory, we show that the receive array gain does not saturate, but that there is a peak at a certain antenna spacing when there is no decou…
We propose a novel scheme for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, called dual-layered transmit-receive generalized spatial modulation (DL-TR-GSM). The proposed scheme is based on the concept of dual-layered transmission (DLT) which uses two receive antenna power levels instead of receive antenna activation/inactivation to transmit data in the receive spatial domain. Hence, in order to minimize the bit error rate (BER) for DL-TR-GSM, the optimal ratio between the two power levels is determined. To further characterize DL-TR-GSM, we fully derive the computational co…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
This paper investigates the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses a large transmit antenna array with antenna elements spaced densely. Under the assumption of idealized uniform linear antenna arrays without mutual coupling, precoded quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission is proved to achieve the channel capacity of the massive MIMO system when the transmit antenna separation tends to zero. This asymptotic optimality is analogous to that of QPSK faster-than-Nyquist signaling.
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or multi-antenna communication is a key technique to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless systems. For the point-to-point MIMO channel, it is a well-known result that the channel singular value decomposition (SVD) based linear precoding and decoding achieves the channel capacity, which also diagonalizes the MIMO channel into parallel single-input single-output (SISO) sub-channels for independent encoding and decoding. However, in multi-user MIMO systems, the optimal transmit covariance of each MIMO link is generally not its channel SVD based as a r…
The joint design of spatial channel assignment and power allocation in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems capable of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) is studied. Assuming availability of channel state information at both communications ends, we maximize the harvested energy at the multi-antenna receiver, while satisfying a minimum information rate requirement for the MIMO link. We first derive the globally optimal eigenchannel assignment and power allocation design, and then present a practically motivated tight closed-form approximation for the optimal d…
In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications under practical conditions. To guarantee secure communication during the long-distance transmission, the massive MIMO (M-MIMO) relaying techniques are explored to significantly enhance wireless security. The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power assignment for a decode-and-forward (DF) M-MIMO relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity and minimize the interception probability, respectively. Our study reveals the condition for a nonnegative the s…
The problem of joint design of transmit waveforms and receive filters is desirable in many application scenarios of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems. In this paper, the joint design problem is investigated under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance metric, in which case the problem is formulated to maximize the SINR at the receiver side subject to some practical transmit waveform constraints. A numerical algorithm is proposed for problem resolution based on the manifold optimization method, which has been shown to be powerful and flexible to address…
Fixed low-resolution Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) help reduce the power consumption in millimeter-wave Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Ma-MIMO) receivers operating at large bandwidths. However, they do not guarantee optimal Energy Efficiency (EE). It has been shown that adopting variable-resolution (VR) ADCs in Ma-MIMO receivers can improve performance with Mean Squared Error (MSE) and throughput while providing better EE. In this paper, we present an optimal energy-efficient bit allocation (BA) algorithm for Ma-MIMO receivers equipped with VR ADCs under a power constraint. We de…
In this work, we study the performance of a single relay Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) cooperative communication system based on Decode and Forward (DF) relaying protocol for two strategies using transmit antenna selection at the source. The first strategy uses one antenna between the relay and the destination, and the second strategy uses Space Time Block Coding (STBC). All channels follow the Rayleigh fading distribution. We derive the expression and Upper Bound for Symbol Error Rate (SER) for M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and the diversity order for both strategies. The analytic…
In this paper power allocation in a cellular network, which transmitter uses massive multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) system was studied. As circuit power consumption is increased by the number of antenna in transmitter and users, thus, to analyze the performance of the network, energy efficiency objective function with considering circuit power consumption was selected. An energy efficiency optimization problem under both maximum transmit power and quality of service (QoS) constraints was considered. To solve this problem under cooperation between users and their base station (BS), ene…
This paper studies a joint communication and sensing (JCAS) system with downlink communication and multi-static sensing for single-target detection in a cloud radio access network architecture. A centralized operation of cell-free massive MIMO is considered for communication and sensing purposes. The JCAS transmit access points (APs) jointly serve the user equipments (UEs) and optionally steer a beam towards the target. A maximum a posteriori ratio test detector is derived to detect the target using signals received at distributed APs. We propose a power allocation algorithm to maximize the se…
In Massive MIMO base stations (BSs), the hardware design needs to balance high spectral efficiency (SE) with low complexity. The level of hardware impairments (HWIs) indicates how strong the signal distortion introduced by hardware imperfections is. In particular, the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have an important impact on signal distortion and power consumption. This article addresses the fundamental problem of selecting the optimal hardware quality in the Massive MIMO space. In particular, we examine the optimal HWI and ADC bit allocation per BS antenna to maximize the SE. The result…
In order to improve the accuracy and resolution for transmit beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, a search-free direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method based on tensor decomposition and polynomial rooting is proposed. In the proposed method, a 3-order tensor is firstly designed to model the received signal of MIMO radar on the basis of the multi-linear property. Then, the factor matrix with target DOA information is obtained by the tensor decomposition via alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm, and subsequently the DOA estimation is converted into the independent min…
In this paper, we propose a Singular-Value-Decomposition-based variable-resolution Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) bit allocation design for a single-user Millimeter wave massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output receiver. We derive the optimality condition for bit allocation under a power constraint. This condition ensures optimal receiver performance in the Mean Squared Error (MSE) sense. We derive the MSE expression and show that it approaches the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). The CRLB is seen to be a function of the analog combiner, the digital combiner, and the bit allocation matrix. We a…
Large-scale MIMO systems have been considered as one of the possible candidates for the next-generation wireless communication technique, due to their potential to provide significant higher throughput than conventional wireless systems. For such systems, Zero-Forcing (ZF) and Conjugate Beamforming (CB) precoding have been considered as two possible practical spatial multiplexing techniques, and their average achievable sum rates have been derived on the sum power constraint. However, in practice, the transmitting power at a base station is constrained under each antenna. In this case, the opt…
In this paper, energy efficient power allocation for the uplink of a multi-cell massive MIMO system is investigated. With the simplified power consumption model, the problem of power allocation is formulated as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) framework with infinite-horizon expected discounted total reward, which takes into account different quality of service (QoS) requirements for each user terminal (UT). We propose an offline solution containing the value iteration and Q-learning algorithms, which can obtain the global optimum power allocation policy. Simulation results show th…
Precoding is a method of compensating the channel at the transmitter. This work presents a novel method of data detection in turbo coded single user massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems using precoding. We show via computer simulations that, when precoding is used, re-transmitting the data does not result in significant reduction in bit-error-rate (BER), thus increasing the spectral efficiency, compared to the case without precoding. Moreover, increasing the number of transmit and receive antennas results in improved BER.
In this paper, we design a resource allocation framework for the delay-sensitive Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) broadcast system with limited feedback. Considering the scarcity and interrelation of the transmit power and feedback bandwidth, it is imperative to optimize the two resources in a joint and efficient manner while meeting the delay-QoS requirement. Based on the effective bandwidth theory, we first obtain a closed-form expression of average violation probability with respect to a given delay requirement as a function of transmit power and codebook size of feedback channel. By minimizing th…

This work advocates the use of deep learning to perform max-min and max-prod power allocation in the downlink of Massive MIMO networks. More precisely, a deep neural network is trained to learn the map between the positions of user equipments (UEs) and the optimal power allocation policies, and then used to predict the power allocation profiles for a new set of UEs' positions. The use of deep learning significantly improves the complexity-performance trade-off of power allocation, compared to traditional optimization-oriented methods. Particularly, the proposed approach does not require the co…
A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel model is considered. The input is a two-antenna transmitter, while the outputs are the legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, both equipped with multiple antennas. All channels are assumed to be known. The problem of obtaining the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves secrecy capacity subject to a power constraint is addressed, and a closed-form expression for the secrecy capacity is obtained.
Rate splitting (RS) systems can better deal with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) than conventional approaches. However, this requires an appropriate power allocation that often has a high computational complexity, which might be inadequate for practical and large systems. To this end, adaptive power allocation techniques can provide good performance with low computational cost. This work presents novel robust and adaptive power allocation technique for RS-based multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. In particular, we develop a robust adaptive …
Real-world transceiver designs for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems are affected by a number of hardware impairments that already appear at the transmit side, such as amplifier non-linearities, quantization artifacts, and phase noise. While such transmit-side impairments are routinely ignored in the data-detection literature, they often limit reliable communication in practical systems. In this paper, we present a novel data-detection algorithm, referred to as large-MIMO approximate message passing with transmit impairments (short LAMA-I), which takes into a…
In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications. In order to solve the challenging issue of short-distance interception in secure communications, the benefit of large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying techniques is exploited to improve the secrecy performance significantly, even in the case without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI). The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power allocation for the relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. We reveal the condition that the secrecy outage ca…
We investigate beam training and allocation for multiuser millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. An orthogonal pilot based beam training scheme is first developed to reduce the number of training times, where all users can simultaneously perform the beam training with the base station (BS). As the number of users increases, the same beam from the BS may point to different users, leading to beam conflict and multiuser interference. Therefore, a quality-of-service (QoS) constrained (QC) beam allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the equivalent channel gain of the QoS-satisfied users, under th…
We study the problem of optimal power allocation in single-hop multi-antenna ad-hoc wireless networks. A standard technique to solve this problem involves optimizing a tri-convex function under power constraints using a block-coordinate-descent based iterative algorithm. This approach, termed WMMSE, tends to be computationally complex and time consuming. Several learning-based approaches have been proposed to speed up the power allocation process. A recent work, UWMMSE, learns an affine transformation of a WMMSE parameter in an unfolded structure to accelerate convergence. In spite of achievin…
Physical layer security has been considered as an important security approach in wireless communications to protect legitimate transmission from passive eavesdroppers. This paper investigates the physical layer security of a wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system in the presence of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. We first propose a transmit-filter-assisted secure MIMO-OFDM system which can destroy the orthogonality of eavesdropper's signals. Our proposed transmit filter can disturb the reception of eavesdropper whi…
In this letter, we investigate the energy efficiency (EE) problem in a millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO (mMIMO) system with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Multiple two-user clusters are formulated according to their channel correlation and gain difference. Following this, we propose a hybrid analog/digital precoding scheme for the low radio frequency (RF) chains structure at the base station (BS). On this basis, we formulate a power allocation problem aiming to maximize the EE under users' quality of service (QoS) requirements and per-cluster power constraint. An iterative algorit…
In this paper, we consider the problem of power allocation in MIMO wiretap channel for secrecy in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Perfect knowledge of the destination channel state information (CSI) and only the statistical knowledge of the eavesdroppers CSI are assumed. We first consider the MIMO wiretap channel with Gaussian input. Using Jensen's inequality, we transform the secrecy rate max-min optimization problem to a single maximization problem. We use generalized singular value decomposition and transform the problem to a concave maximization problem which maximizes the sum secr…
In this paper, the performance of an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system is analytically studied. In particular, the secondary transmitter operates in a spatial multiplexing transmission mode, while a zero-forcing detector is employed at the secondary receiver. Additionally, the secondary system is interfered by single-antenna primary users (PUs). To enhance the performance of secondary transmission, optimal power allocation is performed at the secondary transmitter with a constraint on the maximum allowable outage threshold specified by the PUs. Further, the …
In this paper, performance of a dual-hop cooperative multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system is analyzed over Rayleigh faded channels. For the considered system model, non-regenerative MIMO scheme with transmit antenna selection strategy (TAS) is employed. In this scheme, a single transmit antenna which maximizes the total received signal power at the receiver is selected for transmission. Useful insights from average symbol error rate for various quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes such as general order hexagonal QAM (HQAM), general order rectangular QAM (RQAM) and 32-cross…
In this paper, we address the problem of energy-efficient power allocation for secure communications in an amplify-and-forward (AF) large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system in presence of a passive eavesdropper. The benefits of an AF LS-MIMO relay are exploited to significantly improve the secrecy performance, especially the secrecy energy efficiency (bit per Joule). We first analyze the impact of transmit power at the relay on the secrecy outage capacity, and prove that the secrecy outage capacity is a concave function of transmit power under very practical assumpt…

In this context, Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are used in both topologies and result in performance gains and interference reduction. In order to achieve the benefits mentioned, proper precoder design and power allocation techniques are required in the dow…
We propose a max-min multi-cell aware regularized zero-forcing (Max-Min MCA-RZF) precoding and power allocation scheme for downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A general correlated channel model is considered, and the adopted channel state information (CSI) acquisition model includes the effects of estimation errors and pilot contamination. We use results from random matrix theory to derive deterministic equivalents for the proposed Max-Min power allocation in the large system limit which solely depend on statistical CSI, but not on individual channel real…
This paper proposes a communication model for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on large intelligent surfaces (LIS), where the LIS is modeled as a collection of tightly packed antenna elements. The LIS system is first represented in a circuital way, obtaining expressions for the radiated and received powers, as well as for the coupling between the distinct elements. Then, this circuital model is used to characterize the channel in a line-of-sight propagation scenario, rendering the basis for the analysis and design of MIMO systems. Due to the particular properties o…
In this paper, we consider a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication system between a base station equipped with multiple antennas and multiple mobile users each equipped with a single antenna. The uplink scenario is considered. The uplink channels are acquired by the base station through a training phase. Two linear processing schemes are considered, namely maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF). We optimize the training period and optimal training energy under the average and peak power constraint so that an achievable sum rate is maximized.
This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel model, where there exists a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, each equipped with multiple antennas. Perfect secrecy is achieved when the transmitter and the legitimate receiver can communicate at some positive rate, while ensuring that the eavesdropper gets zero bits of information. In this paper, the perfect secrecy capacity of the multiple antenna MIMO wiretap channel is found for aribtrary numbers of antennas under the assumption that the transmitter performs beamforming based on the …
We derive optimal SNR-based transmit antenna selection rules at the source and relay for the nonregenerative half duplex MIMO relay channel. While antenna selection is a suboptimal form of beamforming, it has the advantage that the optimization is tractable and can be implemented with only a few bits of feedback from the destination to the source and relay. We compare the bit error rate of optimal antenna selection at both the source and relay to other proposed beamforming techniques and propose methods for performing the necessary limited feedback.
Physical transceiver implementations for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems suffer from transmit-RF (Tx-RF) impairments. In this paper, we study the effect on channel capacity and error-rate performance of residual Tx-RF impairments that defy proper compensation. In particular, we demonstrate that such residual distortions severely degrade the performance of (near-)optimum MIMO detection algorithms. To mitigate this performance loss, we propose an efficient algorithm, which is based on an i.i.d. Gaussian model for the distortion caused by these impairments. In…
Due to the large power consumption in RF-circuitry of massive MIMO systems, practically relevant performance measures such as energy efficiency or bandwidth efficiency are neither necessarily monotonous functions of the total transmit power nor the number of active antennas. Optimal antenna selection is however computationally infeasible in these systems. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit power and the subset of selected antennas subject to non-monotonous performance measures in massive multiuser MIMO settings. Numerical results are given for energy effi…
A massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, which utilizes a large number of base station (BS) antennas to serve a set of users, suffers from pilot contamination due to the inter-cell interference (ICI). In this letter, a graph coloring based pilot allocation (GC-PA) scheme is proposed to mitigate pilot contamination for multi-cell massive MIMO systems. Specifically, by exploiting the large-scale characteristics of fading channels, an interference graph is firstly constructed to describe the potential ICI relationship of all users. Then, with the limited pilot resource, the propose…
Massive MIMO is seen as a main enabler for low latency communications, thanks to its high spatial degrees of freedom. The channel hardening and favorable propagation properties of Massive MIMO are particularly important for multiplexing several URLLC devices. However, the actual utility of channel hardening and spatial multiplexing is dependent critically on the accuracy of channel knowledge. When several low latency devices are multiplexed, the cost for acquiring accurate knowledge becomes critical, and it is not evident how many devices can be served with a latency-reliability requirement an…
