We present the theory of out-of-plane (or vertical) electron thermal-field emission from 2D semimetals. We show that the current-voltage-temperature characteristic is well-captured by a universal scaling relation applicable for broad classes of 2D semimetals, including graphene and its few-layer, nodal point semimetal, Dirac semimetal at the verge of topological phase transition and nodal line semimetal. Here an important consequence of the universal emission behavior is revealed: in contrast to the common expectation that band topology shall manifest differently in the physical observables, band topologies in two spatial dimension are indistinguishable from each others and bear no special signature in the electron emission characteristics. Our findings represent the quantum extension of the universal semiclassical thermionic emission scaling law in 2D materials, and provide the theoretical foundations for the understanding of electron emission from cathode and charge interface transport for the design of 2D-material-based vacuum nanoelectronics.
A model is constructed to describe the thermal-field emission of electrons from a three-dimensional ($3$D) topological semimetal hosting Dirac/Weyl node(s). The traditional thermal-field electron emission model is generalised to accommodate the $3$D non-parabolic energy band structures in the topological Dirac/Weyl semimetals, such as cadmium arsenide (\ch{Cd3As2}), sodium bismuthide (\ch{Na3Bi}), tantalum arsenide (\ch{TaAs}) and tantalum phosphide (\ch{TaP}). Due to the unique Dirac cone band structure, an unusual dual-peak feature is observed in the total energy distribution (TED) spectrum.…
We numerically demonstrate that a planar slab made of magnetic Weyl semimetal (a class of topological materials) can emit high-purity circularly polarized (CP) thermal radiation over a broad mid- and long-wave infrared wavelength range for a significant portion of its emission solid angle. This effect fundamentally arises from the strong infrared gyrotropy or nonreciprocity of these materials which primarily depends on the momentum separation between Weyl nodes in the band structure. We clarify the dependence of this effect on the underlying physical parameters and highlight that the spectral …
We theoretically demonstrate that the chiral structure of the nodes of nodal semimetals is responsible for the existence and universal local properties of the edge states in the vicinity of the nodes. We perform a general analysis of the edge states for an isolated node of a 2D semimetal, protected by {\em chiral symmetry} and characterized by the topological winding number $N$. We derive the asymptotic chiral-symmetric boundary conditions and find that there are $N+1$ universal classes of them. The class determines the numbers of flat-band edge states on either side off the node in the 1D spe…
Quantum anomalies in Weyl semimetal (for either ${\bf E}\cdot{\bf B} \neq 0$ or ${\bf \nabla}T\cdot{\bf B} \neq 0$) leads to chiral charge and energy pumping between the opposite chirality nodes. This results in chiral charge and energy imbalance between the Weyl nodes which manifests in several intriguing magneto-transport phenomena. Here, we investigate the role of electrical-, thermal-, and gravitational chiral anomaly on magneto-transport in Weyl semimetals. We predict the planar Ettinghausen and Righi-Leduc effect to be a distinct signature of these quantum anomalies. We also demonstrate …
Dirac-Weyl semimetals are unique three-dimensional (3D) phases of matter with gapless electrons and novel electrodynamic properties believed to be robust against weak perturbations. Here, we unveil the crucial influence of the disorder statistics and impurity diversity in the stability of incompressible electrons in 3D semimetals. Focusing on the critical role played by rare impurity configurations, we show that the abundance of low-energy resonances in the presence of diluted random potential wells endows rare localized zero-energy modes with statistical significance, thus lifting the nodal d…
The tunable carrier density plays a key role in the investigation of novel transport properties in three-dimensional topological semimetals. Here we demonstrate that the carrier density as well as the mobility of Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 nanoplates can be effectively tuned by the in-situ thermal treatment at 350 K for one hour, both showing a non-monotonic evolution with the thermal cycling treatments. The upward shift of Fermi level relative to the Dirac nodes blurs the surface Fermi-arc states, accompanying with an anomalous phase shift of oscillations of bulk states due to the change of topol…
The recent discovery of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 opens up new avenues for research into the interactions between topological orders, magnetism, and electronic correlations. Motivated by the observations of large anomalous Hall effect because of large Berry curvature, we investigate another Berry curvature-induced phenomenon, the anomalous thermal Hall effect in Co3Sn2S2. We study it with and without strain, using a Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonian derived from first principles density functional theory calculations. We first identify this material as a tilted type-I Weyl semimetal bas…
Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) or multipole insulators, hosting peculiar corner states, were discovered [arXiv:1611.07987, arXiv:1708.03636]. It was independently discovered [arXiv:1702.00624] that continuum 5-dimensional (5D) Weyl semimetals generically host the corner states, and so do 4D class A and 3D class AIII topological insulators. In this paper we further confirm that the 5D Weyl semimetals, upon dimensional reduction, lead to universal higher-order topology. First we explain a discrete symmetry protecting the 5D Weyl semimetals, and describe dimensional reductions of the…
The spectrum of electromagnetic collective excitations in Dirac semimetals placed in a quantizing magnetic field is considered. We have found the Landau damping regions using the energy and momentum conservation law for allowed transitions between one-particle states of electron excitations. Analysis of dispersion equations for longitudinal and transverse waves near the window boundaries in the Landau damping regions reveals different types of collective excitations. We also indicate the features of universal broadening of cyclotron absorption for a magnetic field variation in systems with lin…

We study the anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in a linearized low-energy model of a tilted Weyl semimetal, with two Weyl nodes separated in momentum space. For inversion symmetric tilt, we give analytic expressions in two opposite limits: for a small tilt, corresponding to a type-I Weyl semimetal, the Nernst conductivity is finite and independent of the Fermi level, while for a large tilt, corresponding to a type-II Weyl semimetal, it acquires a contribution depending logarithmically on the Fermi energy. This result is in a sharp contrast to the nontilted case, where the Nernst respon…
Thermoelectric conductance of Dirac materials and in particular zero modes reveals the effect of topology .Weyl semimetals with a boundary at z = 0 give rise to chiral zero modes with- out backscattering resulting in a significant contribution to thermal conductivity. By doping the surface with paramagnetic impurities backscattering is allowed, and the thermal conductivity is controlled by the decrease of the transmission function |t|^{2} < 1. We attach a thermal reservoir at the edge of the sample and study the thermal and electrical conductance. For the ballistic and mesoscopic situations, q…
It is well known that the electronic thermal conductivity of clean compensated semimetals can be greatly enhanced over the electric conductivity by the availability of an ambipolar mechanism of conduction, whereby electrons and holes flow in the same direction experiencing negligible Coulomb scattering as well as negligible impurity scattering. This enhancement -- resulting in a breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law with an anomalously large Lorenz ratio -- has been recently observed in two-dimensional monolayer and bilayer graphene near the charge neutrality point. In contrast to this, three-d…
Recent demonstrations on manipulating antiferromagnetic (AF) order have triggered a growing interest in antiferromagnetic metal (AFM), and potential high-density spintronic applications demand further improvements in the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The antiferromagnetic semimetals (AFS) are newly discovered materials that possess massless Dirac fermions that are protected by the crystalline symmetries. In this material, a reorientation of the AF order may break the underlying symmetries and induce a finite energy gap. As such, the possible phase transition from the semimetallic to ins…
Objects around us constantly emit and absorb thermal radiation. The emission and absorption processes are governed by two fundamental radiative properties: emissivity and absorptivity. For reciprocal systems, the emissivity and absorptivity are restricted to be equal by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. This restriction limits the degree of freedom to control thermal radiation and contributes to an intrinsic loss mechanism in photonic energy harvesting systems such assolar cells. Existing approaches to violate Kirchhoff's law typically utilize conventional magneto-optical effects in the pre…
The ability to break Kirchhoff s law is of fundamental importance in thermal radiation. Various nonreciprocal emitters have been proposed to break the balance between absorption and emission. However, the thicknesses of the nonreciprocal materials are usually larger than 1/10 times of the wavelength. Besides, the previous proposed nonreciprocal emitters are complex, thus they can hardly be fabricated in experiment to verify the Kirchhoff s law for nonreciprocal materials. In this paper, we investigate the nonreciprocal thermal radiation of the magnetic Weyl semimetal (MWSM) film atop of the me…
Weyl semimetals are intriguing topological states of matter that support various anomalous magneto-transport phenomena. One such phenomenon is a negative longitudinal ($\mathbf{\nabla} T \parallel \mathbf{B}$) magneto-thermal resistivity, which arises due to chiral magnetic effect (CME). In this paper we show that another fascinating effect induced by CME is the planar thermal Hall effect (PTHE), i.e., appearance of an in-plane transverse temperature gradient when the current due to $\mathbf{\nabla} T$ and the magnetic field $\mathbf{B}$ are not aligned with each other. Using semiclassical Bol…
In this work, the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two Weyl semimetal (WSM) nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated. The numerical results show that negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) effect can be obtained in this system, i.e., when the temperature of the emitter is fixed, the heat flux does not decrease monotonically with the increase of the temperature of the receiver. Specifically, when the temperature of the emitter is 300 K, the heat flux is identical when the temperature of the receiver is 50 K or 280 K. The NDTC effect is attributed to the fact that the perm…
The Casimir force and thermal Casimir force originating from quantum electromagnetic fluctuations at zero and non-zero temperatures, respectively, are significant in nano- and microscale systems and are well-understood. Less understood, however, are the Casimir and thermal Casimir forces in systems breaking Lorentz reciprocity. In this work, we derive a formalism for thermal Casimir forces between an arbitrary number of spheres based on fluctuational electrodynamics and scattering theory without the assumption of Lorentz reciprocity. We study the total Casimir force in systems of two and three…
2H phase (trigonal prismatic D3h) of layered two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted a lot of interests due to the superior electronic and optoelectronic properties. However, flexible electronic devices and thermoelectric performances based on 2H phase have been potentially limited by the strain sensitive electronic band gap and high lattice thermal conductivity (kappa_L). Here, we predict and calculate two 1T (octahedral Oh) phase monolayer telluride materials SnTe2 and SiTe2 with soft mechanics, ultralow kappa_L and electronic properties. The calculated in…
We analyze the structure of the surface states and Fermi arcs of Weyl semimetals as a function of the boundary conditions parameterizing the Hamiltonian self-adjoint extensions of a minimal model with two Weyl points. These boundary conditions determine both the pseudospin polarization of the system on the surface and the shape of the associated Fermi arcs. We analytically derive the expectation values of the density profile of the surface current, we evaluate the anomalous Hall conductivity as a function of temperature and chemical potential and we discuss the surface current correlation func…
We study the origin of the strong spin Hall effect (SHE) in a recently discovered family of Weyl semimetals, LaAl$X$ ($X$=Si, Ge) via a first-principles approach with maximally localized Wannier functions. We show that the strong intrinsic SHE in LaAl$X$ originates from the multiple slight anticrossings of nodal lines and points near $E_F$ due to their high mirror symmetry and large spin-orbit interaction. It is further found that both electrical and thermal means can enhance the spin Hall conductivity ($σ_{SH}$). However, the former also increases the electrical conductivity ($σ_{c}$), while …
Chiral anomaly or Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) has a significant impact on the electron transport behaviors, leading to remarkable longitudinal or planar electrical and thermoelectric transport phenomena in the presence of electromagnetic gauge fields. These phenomena are consequences of the imbalanced chiral charge and energy induced by chiral anomaly in the presence of parallel electric ($\mathbf{E}$) and magnetic ($\mathbf{B}$) fields ($\mathbf{E \cdot B }\neq 0$) or $(\mathbf{B \cdot \nabla }T\neq 0)$ ($\mathbf{\nabla}T$ is the thermal gradient). We here propose anot…
He atom scattering has been demonstrated to be a sensitive probe of the electron-phonon interaction parameter $λ$ at metal and metal-overlayer surfaces. Here it is shown that the theory linking $λ$ to the thermal attenuation of atom scattering spectra (the Debye-Waller factor), can be applied to topological semimetal surfaces, like the quasi-one dimensional charge-density-wave system Bi(114) and the layered pnictogen chalcogenides.
We investigate dissipationless magneto-Seebeck effect in three-dimensional Dirac/Weyl semimetal. The Hall resistivity $ρ_{yx}$ and thermoelectric Hall coefficient $α_{xy}$ exhibit plateaus at the quantum limit, where electrons occupy only the zeroth Landau level. In this condition, quantum oscillation in the Seebeck coefficient $S_{xx}\approx ρ_{yx}α_{xy} $ is suppressed, and the massless fermions are transformed into a Fermi liquid system. We show that the Seebeck coefficient at the quantum limit is expressed by the harmonic sum of Fermi wavelength and thermal de Broglie wavelength scaled by …
The half-Heusler rare-earth intermetallic GdPtBi has recently gained attention due to peculiar magnetotransport phenomena that have been associated with the possible existence of Weyl fermions, thought to arise from the crossings of spin-split conduction and valence bands. On the other hand, similar magnetotransport phenomena observed in other rare-earth intermetallics have often been attributed to the interaction of itinerant carriers with localized magnetic moments stemming from the $4f$-shell of the rare-earth element. In order to address the origin of the magnetotransport phenomena in GdPt…
Exceptional points are universal level degeneracies induced by non-Hermiticity. Whereas past decades witnessed their new physics, the unified understanding has yet to be obtained. Here we present the complete classification of generic topologically stable exceptional points according to two types of complex-energy gaps and fundamental symmetries of charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. This classification reveals unique non-Hermitian gapless structures with no Hermitian analogs and systematically predicts unknown non-Hermitian semimetals and nodal superconductors; a topological dumbbe…
An exotic anomalous plasmon mode is found in strained Weyl semimetals utilizing the topological Landau Fermi liquid and chiral kinetic theories, in which quasiparticle interactions are modeled by long-range Coulomb and residual short-range interactions. The gapped collective mode is derived from the dynamical charge pumping between the bulk and the surface and behaves like $k_{\rm F}^{-1}$. The charge oscillations are accurately determined by the coupling between the induced electric field and the background pseudofields. This novel mode unidirectionally disperses along the pseudomagnetic fiel…
Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by one-dimensional Dirac nodal rings that are protected by the combined symmetry of inversion $\mathcal{P}$ and time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$. The stability of these Dirac rings is guaranteed by a quantized $\pm π$ Berry phase and their low-energy physics is described by a one-parameter family of (2+1)-dimensional quantum field theories exhibiting the parity anomaly. Here we study the Berry-phase supported topological transport of $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ invariant nodal-line semimetals. We find that small inversion breaking allows for an elect…
We study electronic and thermoelectric transport in a type I Weyl semimetal nanojunction, with a torsional dislocation defect, in the presence of an external magnetic field parallel to the dislocation axis. The defect is modeled in a cylindrical geometry, as a combination of a gauge field accounting for torsional strain, and a delta-potential barrier for the lattice mismatch effect. In the Landauer formalism, we find that due to the combination of strain and magnetic field, the electric current exhibits chiral valley-polarization, and the conductance displays the signature of Landau levels. We…
Fermion condensation around a Coulomb impurity in a Weyl semimetal and in a narrow band gap semiconductor as manifestations of the Landau zero-charge problem
Due to the large anomalous Hall effect, magnetic Weyl semimetals can support nonreciprocal surface plasmon polariton modes in the absence of an external magnetic field. This implies that magnetic Weyl semimetals can find novel application in (thermal) photonics. In this work, we consider the near-field radiative heat transfer between two magnetic Weyl semimetal slabs and show that the heat transfer can be controlled with a relative rotation of the parallel slabs. Thanks to the intrinsic nonreciprocity of the surface modes, this so-called twisting method does not require surface structuring lik…

Thermoelectric materials intrigue much interest due to their wide range of application such as power generators and refrigerators. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials is quantified by the figure of merit, and a figure greater than unity is desired. To achieve this, a large Seebeck coefficient and low phonon thermal conductivity are required. We show that this can be achieved with a thin film of topological nodal line semimetals. We also discusses the correlation effect and spin current induced by a temperature gradient. The obtained results provide insight for the improvement of thermoe…
Electric, thermal, and thermoelectric magnetoconductivity for Weyl/multi-Weyl semimetals in planar Hall set-ups induced by the combined effects of topology and strain
The electric polarization as a bulk quantity is described by the modern theory of polarization in insulating systems and cannot be defined in conducting systems. Upon a gradual change of a parameter in the system, the polarization always varies smoothly as long as the gap remains open. In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional Weyl semimetal, which hosts Weyl nodes protected by symmetries, and study the behavior of the polarization when a symmetry-breaking term $M$ is introduced and a gap opens. We show that there can be a jump between $M\to0^+$ and $M\to0^-$ limits. We find that the jump…
