We point out that the Kalb-Ramond field can couple to the Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fields of superstring theory in a way that can generate a coupling of the Kalb-Ramond field to dark matter dipole moments. Electroweak dipole dark matter could then arise from the Ramond sector of superstrings with a low string scale up to 120 TeV.
We point out that string theory can solve the conundrum to explain the emergence of an electroweak dipole moment from electroweak singlets through induction of those dipole moments through a Kalb-Ramond dipole coupling. This can generate a U_Y(1) portal to dark matter and entails the possibility that the U_Y(1) gauge field is related to a fundamental vector field for open string interactions. The requirement to explain the observed dark matter abundance relates the coupling scale in the corresponding low-energy effective U_Y(1) portal to the dark matter mass. The corresponding electron recoil …
We study the shadow behaviors of five dimensional (5D) black holes embedded in type IIB superstring/supergravity inspired spacetimes by considering solutions with and without rotations. Geometrical properties as shapes and sizes are analyzed in terms of the D3-brane number and the rotation parameter. Concretely, we find that the shapes are indeed significantly distorted by such physical parameters and the size of the shadows decreases with the brane or "color" number and the rotation. Then, we investigate geometrical observables and energy emission rate aspects.
We present the perturbative and non-perturbative QCD structure of the dipole-dipole scattering amplitude in momentum space. The perturbative contribution is described by two-gluon exchange and the non-perturbative contribution by the stochastic vacuum model which leads to confinement of the quark and antiquark in the dipole via a string of color fields. This QCD string gives important non-perturbative contributions to high-energy reactions. A new structure different from the perturbative dipole factors is found in the string-string scattering amplitude. The string can be represented as an inte…
In this work, we investigate the shadow cast and strong field gravitational lensing of a new class of black hole solutions in dilaton gravity where dilaton field is coupled with nonlinear Maxwell invariant [Younesizadeh et al. in Int J Mod Phys A 34(35):1950239]. The space-time is a stationary axisymmetric geometry. The key part in our investigations is finding the effect of dilaton parameter N on the size of shadows and the energy emission rate. As the N parameter increases, the size of black hole shadow increases. Also, the energy emission rate increases with increase in the dilaton paramete…
We compute the quasinormal frequencies of $d$-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes with leading string $α'$ corrections in the eikonal limit for tensorial gravitational perturbations and scalar test fields. We find that, differently than in Einstein gravity, the real parts of the frequency are no longer equal for these two cases. The corresponding imaginary parts remain equal to the principal Lyapunov exponent corresponding to circular null geodesics, to first order in $α'$. We also compute the radius of the shadow cast by these black holes.
To explore the possible clues for the extra dimension from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations, we study the shadow of the rotating 5D black string in General Relativity (GR). Instead of investigating the shadow in the effective 4D theory, we concern the motion of photons along the extra dimension $z$ with a conserved momentum $P_z$, which appears as an effective mass in the geodesic equations of photons. The existence of $P_z$ enlarges the photon regions and the shadow of the rotating 5D black string while it has slight impact on the distortion. The EHT observations of M87* and Sgr…
We construct an exact black hole solution for the Einstein gravity coupled with the nonlinear electrodynamics (which corresponds to the Maxwell electrodynamics in the weak field limit) in the presence of a cloud of strings as the source. We study the thermodynamical properties of the black hole solutions and derive the corrected first-law of thermodynamics. The presence of a cloud of strings does not affect the stability of the present black hole. However, a second-order phase transition exists for this system at a critical horizon radius. Furthermore, we study the quasinormal modes and their …
We argue that accidental approximate scaling symmetries are robust predictions of weakly coupled string vacua, and show that their interplay with supersymmetry and other (generalised) internal symmetries underlies the ubiquitous appearance of no-scale supergravities in low-energy 4D EFTs. We identify 4 nested types of no-scale supergravities, and show how leading quantum corrections can break scale invariance while preserving some no-scale properties (including non-supersymmetric flat directions). We use these ideas to classify corrections to the low-energy 4D supergravity action in perturbati…
Studying dynamics of open strings attached to a D2-brane in a NS two form field background, we find that these open strings act as dipoles of U(1) gauge field of the brane. This provides an string theoretic description of the flux modifications needed for the DBI action on noncommutative torus.
I discuss a scaling limit, where open strings in the WZW-model behave as dipoles with charges confined to a spherical brane and projected to the lowest Landau level. Then I show how the joining and splitting interactions of these dipoles are naturally described using the fuzzy sphere algebra.
We calculate the electrostatic self-force on an electric dipole in the spacetime generated by a static, thin, infinite and straight cosmic string. The electric dipole is held fixed in different configurations, namely, parallel, perpendicular to the cosmic string and oriented along the azimuthal direction around this topological defect, which is stretched along the z axis. We show that the self-force is equivalent to an interaction of the electric dipole with an effective dipole moment which depends on the linear mass density of the cosmic string and on the configuration. The plots of the self-…
Plenty of efforts have been made to explore the black string and its instability, but the fate of the black strings with fewer extra dimensions is still inconclusive. Now starting from the 5D uniform black string, we show that the EHT observations of M87* and SgrA* can not only rule out the black string with an infinite extra dimension, but also constrain the length of a compact extra dimension, which is much smaller than the critical length given from the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability. Our findings support the hypothesis that the extra dimension is compact avoiding the GL instability.
Using the dipole picture describing the $1/N_C$ limit of QCD at small $x$ and the conformal invariance properties of the BFKL kernel in transverse coordinate space, we show that the 1->p dipole densities can be expressed in terms of dual Shapiro-Virasoro amplitudes B_{2p+2} and their generalization including non-zero conformal spins. We discuss the possibility of an effective closed string theory of interacting QCD dipoles.
We analyse the dipole solution of heterotic string theory in four dimensions. It has the structure of monopole and anti-monopole connected by flux line (string). Due to growing coupling near the poles, the length of the string diverges. However, exploiting the self-duality of heterotic string theory in four dimension, we argue that this string is correctly described in terms of dual variables.
We analyze the length, mass and spatial distribution of a discretized transverse string in $D_\perp$ dimensions with fixed end-points near its Hagedorn temperature. We suggest that such a string may dominate the (holographic) Pomeron kinematics for dipole-dipole scattering at intermediate and small impact parameters. Attractive self-string interactions cause the transverse string size to contract away from its diffusive size, a mechanism reminiscent of the string-black-hole transmutation. The string shows sizable asymmetries in the transverse plane that translate to primordial azimuthal asymme…
We compute the electric dipole moment of nucleons in the large $N_c$ QCD model by Witten, Sakai and Sugimoto with $N_f=2$ degenerate massive flavors. Baryons in the model are instantonic solitons of an effective five-dimensional action describing the whole tower of mesonic fields. We find that the dipole electromagnetic form factor of the nucleons, induced by a finite topological $θ$ angle, exhibits complete vector meson dominance. We are able to evaluate the contribution of each vector meson to the final result - a small number of modes are relevant to obtain an accurate estimate. Extrapolati…
We briefly review the approach to dipole-dipole scattering in holographic QCD developed in ARXIV:1202.0831. The Pomeron is modeled by exchanging closed strings between the dipoles and yields Regge behavior for the elastic amplitude. We calculate curvature corrections to this amplitude in both a conformal and confining background, identifying the holographic direction with the virtuality of the dipoles. The it wee-dipole density is related to the string tachyon diffusion in both virtuality and the transverse directions. We give an explicit derivation of the dipole saturation momentum both in th…
We propose quantum dynamics for the dipole moving in cosmic string background and show that the classical scale symmetry of a particle moving in cosmic string background is still restored even in the presence of dipole moment of the particle. However, we show that the classical scale symmetry is broken due to inequivalent quantization of the the non-relativistic system. The consequence of this quantum anomaly is the formation of bound state in the interval ξ\in(-1,1). The inequivalent quantization is characterized by a 1-parameter family of self-adjoint extension parameter Σ. We show that with…
We construct semi-classical string solutions of the Schrödinger $Sch_5 \times S^5$ spacetime, which is conjectured to be the gravity dual of a non-local dipole-deformed CFT. They are the counterparts of the giant magnon and spiky string solutions of the undeformed $AdS_5 \times S^5$ to which they flow when the deformation parameter is turned off. They live in an $S^3$ subspace of the five-sphere along the directions of which the $B$-field has non-zero components having also extent in the $Sch_5$ part of the metric. Finally, we speculate on the form of the dual field theory operators.
In this paper we investigate the recently found $γ$-deformed Maldacena-Nunez background by studying the behavior of different semiclassical string configurations. This background is conjectured to be dual to dipole deformations of $\N=1$ SYM. We compare our results to those in the pure Maldacena-Nunez background and show that the energies of our string configurations are higher than in the undeformed background. Thinking in the lines of (hep-th/0505100) we argue that this is an evidence for better decoupling of the Kaluza-Klein modes from the pure SYM theory excitations. Moreover we are able t…
Confinement of electrically charged test particles in the dilute plasma of monopoles and pointlike magnetic dipoles is studied. We calculate the tension of the string emerging between the infinitely separated test particles. The string tension is an increasing function of the dipole density provided other parameters of the plasma are fixed. The relevance of our results to confining gauge theories is discussed.
I emphasize analogy between Dp-branes in string theories and solitons in gauge theories comparing their common properties and showing differences. We will show that for certain excitations of the string/D3-brane system Neumann boundary conditions emerge from the Born-Infeld dynamics. The excitations which are coming down the string with a polarization along a direction parallel to the brane are almost completely reflected. For the wavelengths much larger than the string scale only a small fraction of the energy escapes in the form of dipole radiation. The physical interpretation is that a stri…
We model the soft pomeron in QCD using a scalar Polyakov string with extrinsic curvature in the bottom-up approach of holographic QCD. The overall dipole-dipole scattering amplitude in the soft pomeron kinematics is shown to be sensitive to the extrinsic curvature of the string for finite momentum transfer. The characteristics of the diffractive peak in the differential elastic $pp$ scattering are affected by a small extrinsic curvature of the string.
As a further test of the conjectured equivalence of string states and extremal black holes, we compute the dipole moments of black holes with arbitrary spin and superspin in D=4,N=4 supergravity coupled to 22 vector multiplets and compare them with the dipole moments of states in the heterotic string on $T^6$ or the Type IIA string on $K3 \times T^2$. Starting from a purely bosonic black hole with Kerr angular momentum L, the superpartners are generated by acting with fermion zero modes, thus filling out the complete supermultiplet. $L$ is then identified with the superspin. On the heterotic s…
We compute the chromo-field distributions of static color-dipoles in the fundamental and adjoint representation of SU(Nc) in the loop-loop correlation model and find Casimir scaling in agreement with recent lattice results. Our model combines perturbative gluon exchange with the non-perturbative stochastic vacuum model which leads to confinement of the color-charges in the dipole via a string of color-fields. We compute the energy stored in the confining string and use low-energy theorems to show consistency with the static quark-antiquark potential. We generalize Meggiolaro's analytic continu…
Using the recent solution of the triple Pomeron coupling in the QCD dipole picture as a closed string amplitude with six legs, its analytical form in terms of hypergeometric functions and numerical value are derived.
The smooth topology change of Berry's phase from a Dirac monopole-like configuration to a dipole configuration, when one approaches the monopole position in the parameter space, is analyzed in an exactly solvable model. A novel aspect of Berry's connection ${\cal A}_{k}$ is that the geometrical center of the monopole-like configuration and the origin of the Dirac string are displaced in the parameter space. Gauss' theorem $\int_{S}(\nabla\times {\cal A})\cdot d\vec{S}=\int_{V} \nabla\cdot (\nabla\times {\cal A}) dV=0$ for a volume $V$ which is free of singularities shows that a combination of …
We first study the temporal Wilson loop in the finite-temperature non-commutative dipole field theory from the string/gauge correspondence. The associated dual supergravity background is constructed from the near-horizon geometry of near-extremal D-branes, after applying T-duality and smeared twist. We investigate the string configuration therein and find that while the temperature produces a maximum distance $L_{max}$ in the interquark distance the dipole in there could produce a minimum distance $L_{min}$. The quark boundary pair therefore could be found only if their distance is between $L_…
We review the method of constructing dipole and string loop solutions from the higher-dimensional (Euclidean) Kerr black hole. We analyse the results in various dimensions, finding solutions earlier given in the literature. Then we construct a new heterotic dipole with non-trivial dilaton and gauge fields. This can, in turn, be describes as a brane/anti-brane pair which interpolates between the KK-dipole and the H-dipole. Finally an argument is presented on the tachyonic instability by analysing the string fluctuations on the dipole background.
Within the framework of generalized Papapetrou method, we derive the effective equations of motion for a string with two particles attached to its ends, along with appropriate boundary conditions. The equations of motion are the usual Nambu-Goto-like equations, while boundary conditions turn out to be equations of motion for the particles at the string ends. The form of those equations is discussed, and they are explicitly solved for a particular case of a straight-line string rotating around its center. From this solution we obtain the correction terms to the $J\propto E^2$ law describing Reg…
Deep inelastic scattering of $\mathcal{R}$-currents and the scattering of a small dipole on finite length hot $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM matter are discussed. In each case we find the scale when scattering becomes strong is determined by a saturation momentum $Q^2_s \sim LT^3/x$ where $L$ is the length of the matter. For $\mathcal{R}$-currents we analyze the operator product expansion. For infinite length matter the series generated by the OPE is not Borel summable but we are able to determine the exponential part of the tunneling amplitude determining $F_2$ when $\frac{Q^2}{Q^2_s}\gg 1$ from the pos…
Antisymmetric tensor fields are a compelling prediction of string theory. This makes them an interesting target for particle physics because antisymmetric tensors may couple to electromagnetic dipole moments, thus opening a possible discovery opportunity for string theory. The strongest constraints on electromagnetic dipole couplings would arise from couplings to electrons, where these couplings would contribute to Moller and Bhabha scattering. Previous measurements of Bhabha scattering constrain the couplings to $\tilde{M}_e m_C>7.1\times 10^4\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$, where $m_C$ is the mass of the …
In this lecture, I put forward conjectures asserting that, in all noncommutative field theories, (1) open Wilson lines and their descendants constitute a complete set of interpolating operators of `noncommutative dipoles', obeying dipole relation, (2) infrared dynamics of the noncommutative dipoles is dual to ultraviolet dynamics of the elementary noncommutative fields, and (3) open string field theory is a sort of noncommutative field theory, whose open Wilson lines are interpolating operators for closed strings. I substantiate these conjectures by various intuitive arguments and explicit com…
According to AdS/CFT duality semi-classical strings in the Schrödinger spacetime is conjectured to be a holographic dual to dipole CFT. In this paper we consider pulsating strings in five-dimensional Schrödinger space times five-sphere. We have found classical string solutions pulsating entirely in the Schrödinger part of the background. We quantize the theory semi-classically and obtain the wave function of the problem. We have found the corrections to the energy, which by duality are supposed to give anomalous dimensions of certain operators in the dipole CFT.
We study a deformation of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory by a dimension-5 vector operator. There is a simple nonlocal "dipole" field-theory that realizes this deformation. We present evidence that this theory is realized in the setting of "pinned-branes". The dipoles correspond to open strings that arch out of the brane. We find the gravitational dual of the theory at large N. We also discuss the generalization to the (2,0) theory.
It is possible to describe fermionic phases of matter and spin-topological field theories in 2+1d in terms of bosonic "shadow" theories, which are obtained from the original theory by "gauging fermionic parity". The fermionic/spin theories are recovered from their shadow by a process of fermionic anyon condensation: gauging a one-form symmetry generated by quasi-particles with fermionic statistics. We apply the formalism to theories which admit gapped boundary conditions. We obtain Turaev-Viro-like and Levin-Wen-like constructions of fermionic phases of matter. We describe the group structure …
We revisit the problem of dipole-dipole scattering via exchanges of soft Pomerons in the context of holographic QCD. We show that a single closed string exchange contribution to the eikonalized dipole-dipole scattering amplitude yields a Regge behavior of the elastic amplitude; the corresponding slope and intercept are different from previous results obtained by a variational analysis of semi-classical surfaces. We provide a physical interpretation of the semi-classical worldsheets driving the Regge behavior for (-t)>0 in terms of worldsheet instantons. The latter describe the Schwinger mechan…
We display the vertex operators for all states in the conformal supergravity sector of the twistor string, as outlined by Berkovits and Witten. These include `dipole' states, which are pairs of supergravitons that do not diagonalize the translation generators. We use canonical quantization of the open string version of Berkovits, and compute N-point tree level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and scalars. We reproduce the Berkovits-Witten formula for maximal helicity violating (MHV) amplitudes (which they derived using path integrals), and extend their results to the dipole pairs. W…
The quest for extension of holographic correspondence to non-relativistic sectors naturally includes Schrödinger backgrounds and their field theory duals. In this paper we study the holography by probing the correspondence with pulsating strings. The case we consider is pulsating strings in five-dimensional Schrödinger space times five-torus $T^{1,1}$, which has as field theory dual a dipole CFT. First we find particular pulsating string solutions and then semi-classically quantize the theory. We obtain the wave function of the problem and thoroughly study the corrections to the energy, which …
Observations by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and the Planck mission suggest a hemispherical power amplitude asymmetry in the cosmic microwave background, with a correlation length on the order of the size of the observable Universe. We find that this anomaly can be naturally explained by an axion-like particle (ALP) cosmic string formed near our visible Universe. The field variation associated to this cosmic string creates particle density fluctuations after inflation, which consequently decay into radiation before the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) era and resulted in the observed…
We quantize the open string in an arbitrary constant magnetic field with a non factorized metric on a torus. We then discuss carefully the vertexes which describe the emission of dipole open strings and closed strings in the non compact limit. Finally we compute various stringy form factors which in the compact case induces a Kaehler and complex structure dependence and suppression of some amplitudes with KK states.
In this paper we investigate the freely propagating fields behind the results in [6]. In [6] we calculated the magnetic dipole moment of the muon and the electric dipole moments of the muon, electron and the neutron (in a simple quark model) to first order in loop corrections in both S$_1$ and S$_1 \backslash \, \boldsymbol{Z}_2$. In these calculations in [6] we investigated the effect of fields possibly generated by higher dimensional superconducting cosmic strings [4] that interact with the charged fields on the manifold. In comparing the results in [6] with standard model precision tests fo…
The Wilson loop in the non-commutative dipole field theory is re-examined within the framework of dual gravity description. In contrast to the previous investigations, we let the dual string be moving along the deformed $S^5$ and find the exact expression of the interquark potential. The potential shows a Coulomb behavior at all distance and does not have a minimum distance between quarks, which exhibits in the static configuration. After comparing the potential of the static and moving configurations we find that while the dual string is static at long distance it will transit to a moving con…
The origin of light is a unsolved mystery in nature. Recently, it was suggested that light may originate from a new kind of order - quantum order. To test this idea in experiments, we study systems of screened magnetic/electric dipoles in 2D and 3D lattices. We show that our models contain an artificial light -- a photon-like collective excitation. We discuss how to design realistic devices that realize our models. We show that the ``speed of light'' and the ``fine structure constant'' of the artificial light can be tuned in our models. The properties of artificial atoms (bound states of pairs…
We construct a new extreme black hole solution in toroidally compactified heterotic string theory. The black hole saturates the Bogomol'nyi bound, has zero angular momentum, but nonzero electric dipole moment. It is obtained by starting with a higher dimensional rotating charged black hole, and compactifying one direction in the plane of rotation.
Using Schwarzschild -- de-Sitter (Kottler) metric we derive a simple analytical relation between a shadow size and $Λ$-term. Current observations of the smallest spot to evaluate shadow size at the Galactic Center do not reach an accuracy comparable with cosmological $Λ$-term $\sim 10^{-52}{\rm m}^{-2}$, however, if in reality we have dark energy instead of a constant $Λ$-term then dark energy may be a function depending on time and space and it could be approximated with a local constant $Λ$-term near the Galactic Center and it is important to introduce a procedure to evaluate the $Λ$-term. W…
