In this paper, we study the differential invariants and the invariant heat flow in centro-affine geometry, proving that the latter is equivalent to the inviscid Burgers' equation. Furthermore, we apply the centro-affine invariants to develop an invariant algorithm to match features of objects appearing in images. We show that the resulting algorithm compares favorably with the widely applied scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), speeded up robust features (SURF), and affine-SIFT (ASIFT) methods.
Employing a centro-affine flow on smooth convex bodies, we generate new centro-affine differential invariants. One class of the newly defined invariants is the object of a sharp isoperimetric inequality, while other new inequalities on known centro-affine invariants are obtained as a byproduct of the flow's study. Furthermore, this approach led to a geometric interpretation of a new affine surface area recently introduced by Ludwig and Reitzner.
Let $\widetilde{J}$ be the canonical para-complex structure on $\mathbb{R}^4$. In this paper we study $3$-dimensional centro-affine hypersurfaces with a $\widetilde{J}$-tangent centro-affine vector field (sometimes called $\widetilde{J}$-tangent centro-affine hypersurfaces) as well as $3$-dimensional $\widetilde{J}$-tangent affine hyperspheres with the property that at least one null-direction of the second fundamental form coincides with either $\mathcal{D}^+$ or $\mathcal{D}^-$. The main purpose of this paper is to give a full local classification of the above mentioned hypersurfaces. In par…
In this paper, the isoperimetric inequality in centro-affine plane geometry is obtained. We also investigate the long-term behavior of an invariant plane curve flow, whose evolution process can be expressed as a second-order nonlinear parabolic equation with respect to centro-affine curvature. The forward and backward limits in time are discussed, which shows that a closed convex embedded curve may converge to an ellipse when evolving according to this flow.
We consider smooth plane curves which are convex with respect to the origin. We describe centro-affine invariants (that is, GL_+(2,R)-invariants), such as centro-affine curvature and arc length, in terms of the canonical Lorentz structure on the three dimensional space of all the ellipses centered at zero, by means of null curves of osculating ellipses. This is the centro-affine analogue of the approach to conformal invariants of curves in the sphere introduced by Langevin and O'Hara, using the canonical pseudo Riemannian metric on the space of circles.
We study the long time behavior of the volume preserving $p$-flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $1\leq p<\frac{n+1}{n-1}$. By extending Andrews' technique for the flow along the affine normal, we prove that every centrally symmetric solution to the volume preserving $p$-flow converges sequentially to the unit ball in the $C^{\infty}$ topology, modulo the group of special linear transformations.
We consider non-degenerate centro-affine hypersurface immersions in R^n whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a bijective correspondence between homothetic families of proper affine hyperspheres with center in the origin and with parallel cubic form, and Köchers conic omega-domains, which are the maximal connected sets consisting of invertible elements in a real semi-simple Jordan algebra. Every level surface of the omega function in an omega-domain is an affine complete, Euclidean complete proper affine hypersphere with para…
We study the asymptotic behavior of smooth, origin-symmetric, strictly convex bodies under the centro-affine normal flows. By means of a stability version of the Blaschke-Santaló inequality, we obtain regularity of the solutions provided that initial convex bodies have almost maximum Mahler volume. We prove that suitably rescaled solutions converge sequentially to the unit ball in the $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ topology modulo $SL(n+1)$.
We interpret the log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture of Böröczky-Lutwak-Yang-Zhang as a spectral problem in centro-affine differential geometry. In particular, we show that the Hilbert-Brunn-Minkowski operator coincides with the centro-affine Laplacian, thus obtaining a new avenue for tackling the conjecture using insights from affine differential geometry. As every strongly convex hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a centro-affine unit-sphere, it has constant centro-affine Ricci curvature equal to $n-2$, in stark contrast to the standard weighted Ricci curvature of the associated metric-measure spa…
We consider two types of $p$-centro affine flows on smooth, centrally symmetric, closed convex planar curves, $p$-contracting, respectively, $p$-expanding. Here $p$ is an arbitrary real number greater than 1. We show that, under any $p$-contracting flow, the evolving curves shrink to a point in finite time and the only homothetic solutions of the flow are ellipses centered at the origin. Furthermore, the normalized curves with enclosed area $π$ converge, in the Hausdorff metric, to the unit circle modulo SL(2). As a $p$-expanding flow is, in a certain way, dual to a contracting one, we prove t…
In [Centro-affine invariants for smooth convex bodies, Int. Math. Res. Notices. doi: 10.1093/imrn/rnr110, 2011] Stancu introduced a family of centro-affine normal flows, $p$-flow, for $1\leq p<\infty.$ Here we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the planar $p$-flow for $p=\infty$ in the class of smooth, origin-symmetric convex bodies. First, we prove that the $\infty$-flow evolves suitably normalized origin-symmetric solutions to the unit disk in the Hausdorff metric, modulo $SL(2).$ Second, using the $\infty$-flow and a Harnack estimate for this flow, we prove a stability version of the pl…
We establish a sharp upper-bound for the first non-zero even eigenvalue (corresponding to an even eigenfunction) of the Hilbert-Brunn-Minkowski operator associated to a strongly convex $C^2$-smooth origin-symmetric convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our isospectral inequality is centro-affine invariant, attaining equality if and only if $K$ is a (centered) ellipsoid; this is reminiscent of the (non affine invariant) classical Szegö--Weinberger isospectral inequality for the Neumann Laplacian. The new upper-bound complements the conjectural lower-bound, which has been shown to be equivalent to …
In this paper, we first establish an equivalence theorem of Minkowski spaces by using results in centro-affine differential geometry. As an application in Finsler geometry, we gives some new characterizations of Berwald spaces.
In this paper we prove that the space of differential invariants for curves with arc-length parameter in the light cone of Lorentzian $\mathbb{R}^4$, invariants under the centro-affine action of the Lorentzian group, is Poisson equivalent to the space of conformal differential invariants for curves in the Möbius sphere. We use this relation to find realizations of solutions of a complexly coupled system of KdV equations as flows of curves in the cone.
In this paper we study the parabolic evolution equation $\partial_t u=(|Du|^{2}+2|\det Du|)^{-1} Δu$, where $u : M\times[0,\infty) \to N$ is an evolving map between compact flat surfaces. We use a tensor maximum principle for the induced metric to establish two-sided bounds on the singular values of Du, which shows that unlike harmonic map heat flow, this flow preserves diffeomorphisms. A change of variables for Du then allows us to establish a $C^α$ estimate for the coefficient of the tension field, and thus (thanks to the quasilinear structure and the Schauder estimates) we get full regulari…
We explore connections furnished by the Funk metric, a relative of the Hilbert metric, between projective geometry, billiards, convex geometry and affine inequalities. We first show that many metric invariants of the Funk metric are invariant under projective transformations as well as projective duality. These include the Holmes-Thompson volume and surface area of convex subsets, and the length spectrum of their boundary, extending results of Holmes-Thompson and Álvarez Paiva on Schäffer's dual girth conjecture. We explore in particular Funk billiards, which generalize hyperbolic billiards in…
