Relativistic heavy-ion collisions create hot quark-gluon plasma as well as very strong electromagnetic (EM) and fluid vortical fields. The strong EM field and vorticity can induce intriguing macroscopic quantum phenomena such as chiral magnetic, chiral separation, chiral electric separation, and chiral vortical effects as well as the spin polarization of hadrons. These phenomena provide us with experimentally feasible means to study the nontrivial topological sector of quantum chromodynamics, the possible parity violation of strong interaction at high temperature, and the subatomic spintronics of quark-gluon plasma. These studies, both in theory and in experiments, are strongly connected with other subfields of physics such as condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and cold atomic physics, and thus form an emerging interdisciplinary research area. We give an introduction to the aforementioned phenomena induced by the EM field and vorticity and an overview of the current status of their experimental research in heavy-ion collisions. We also briefly discuss spin hydrodynamics as well as chiral and spin kinetic theories.
The (3+1)D relativistic hydrodynamics with chiral anomaly is used to obtain a quantitative description of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy-ion collisions. We find that the charge-dependent hadron azimuthal correlations are sensitive to the CME, and that the experimental observations are consistent with the presence of the effect.
We employ a 3+1D anomalous hydrodynamics with initial condition generated by HIJING to simulate the chiral vortical effect and the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions. This allows us to calculate the charge-dependent two-particle correlations with respect to the reaction plane at different collision energies and centralities. We then compare the computed results with the experimental data and give discussions on the possible background effects.
High-energy Heavy-ion collisions can generate extremely hot quark-gluon matter and also extremely strong magnetic fields and fluid vorticity. Once coupled to chiral anomaly, the magnetic fields and fluid vorticity can induce a variety of novel transport phenomena, including the chiral magnetic effect, chiral vortical effect, etc. Some of them require the environmental violation of parity and thus provide a means to test the possible parity violation in hot strongly interacting matter. We will discuss the underlying mechanism and implications of these anomalous chiral transports in heavy-ion co…
No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and anti-Omega hyperons in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that this is evidence that they are produced as topological defects arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates (DCC) with an average domain size of about 2 fm.
Chiral anomalous effects in relativistic plasmas are reviewed. The essence of chiral separation and chiral magnetic effects is explained in simple terms. Qualitative differences between the two phenomena, both of which are triggered by background electromagnetic fields, are highlighted. It is shown how an interplay of the chiral separation and chiral magnetic effects could lead to a new collective plasma mode, called the chiral magnetic wave. It is argued that the chiral magnetic wave is overdamped in weakly interacting plasmas. Its fate in a strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma is less cle…
We give a brief overview of recent theoretical and experimental results on the chiral magnetic effect and spin polarization effect in heavy-ion collisions. We present updated experimental results for the chiral magnetic effect and related phenomena. The time evolution of the magnetic fields in different models is discussed. The newly developed quantum kinetic theory for massive fermions is reviewed. We present theoretical and experimental results for the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons and the $ρ_{00}$ value of vector mesons.
We discuss both the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy-momentum tensor in a left chiral theory with flavour anomalies as an effective theory for flavored chiral phonons in a chiral superfluid with the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In the mean-field (leading tadpole) approximation the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy momentum tensor take the form of constitutive currents in the chiral superfluid state. The pertinence of higher order corrections and the Adler-Bardeen theorem is briefly noted.
No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and AntiOmega hadrons in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that this is evidence that they are produced from topological defects in the form of skyrmions arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. It is shown that the excess Omega or AntiOmega produced could not be easily washed out in the hadronic medium and therefore would survive in the final state.
We incorporate the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks in the framework of PNJL model to study hot and dense magnetised matter with chiral imbalance. For this purpose, the eigen energy solution of the Dirac equation is obtained in presence of constant background magnetic field and chiral chemical potential (CCP) along with the minimal anomalous magnetic moment interaction of the fermion. Although there is a marginal enhancement in the IMC behaviour of the quark condensate due to the combined effects of AMM and CCP, we find that the overall behaviour of the Polyakov loop and the chiral ch…
We study relativistic magnetohydrodynamics with longitudinal boost invariance in the presence of chiral magnetic effects and finite electric conductivity. With initial magnetic fields parallel or anti-parallel to electric fields, we derive the analytic solutions of electromagnetic fields and the chiral number and energy density in an expansion of several parameters determined by initial conditions. The numerical solutions show that such analytic solutions work well in weak fields or large chiral fluctuations. We also discuss the properties of electromagnetic fields in the laboratory frame.
The effect of quark anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) to chiral restoration and deconfinement phase transitions under magnetic fields is investigated in a Pauli-Villars regularized PNJL model. A linear-in-$B$ term for quark anomalous magnetic moment is introduced to the Lagrangian density of our model, and it plays the role of inverse catalysis to the phase transitions. With fixed magnetic field, the critical temperature decreases with quark AMM. When fixing quark AMM, the critical temperature increases with magnetic field for a small quark AMM, but decreases with magnetic field for a large quar…
Starting from low energy effective chiral Lagrangian with gauged Wess-Zumino Witten term, we have derived a hydrodynamic theory for chiral superfluid. It is a non-abelian hydrodynamics at zero temperature with only superfluid components. With an external electromagnetic field and baryonic and axial baryonic chemical potentials turned on, we are able to identify analogs of various anomaly induced term in normal hydrodynamics, including chiral vortical effect, chiral magnetic effect and chiral electric effect. As an example, we solved the hydrodynamic equations for the ground state and observed …
Chiral anomaly is a fundamental aspect of quantum theories with chiral fermions. How such microscopic anomaly manifests itself in a macroscopic many-body system with chiral fermions, is a highly nontrivial question that has recently attracted significant interest. As it turns out, unusual transport currents can be induced by chiral anomaly under suitable conditions in such systems, with the notable example of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) where a vector current (e.g. electric current) is generated along an external magnetic field. A lot of efforts have been made to search for CME in heavy i…
The Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is a macroscopic manifestation of fundamental chiral anomaly in a many-body system of chiral fermions, and emerges as anomalous transport current in the fluid dynamics framework. Experimental observation of CME is of great interest and has been reported in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Significant efforts have also been made to look for CME in heavy ion collisions. Critically needed for such search, is the theoretical prediction for CME signal. In this paper we report a first quantitative modeling framework, the Anomalous Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD), which compu…
The chiral soliton model including pi, rho, omega mesons is extended for the case when the scalar - isoscalar sigma meson has an anomalous dimension - d. The form factor of the sigma - nucleon interaction calculated and to be found not highly sensitive to the value of d.
We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium break-up processes due to the Mott effect for light (pi) and open-charm (D, D*) mesons at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. A model calculation for the process J/Psi + pi -> D + \bar D* + h.c. is presented which demonstrates that the Mott effect for the D-mesons leads to a threshold effect in the thermal averaged break-up cross section. This effect is suggested as an explanation of the phenomenon of anomalous J/Psi suppression in the CERN NA50 experiment.
We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes due to the Mott-effect for D-mesons at the chiral phase transition. A model calculation for the process J/Psi+pi --> D+D^*+ h.c. is presented which demonstrates that threshold effects in the thermal averaged breakup cross section can be explained as a Mott transition where final state quark-antiquark bound states enter the continuum of resonant states at the QCD phase transition. Applications to heavy-ion collisions within a modified Glauber model scenario and the phenomenon of anomalous J/$ψ$ suppression in the CERN…
The rotation of polarization occurs for light interacting with chiral materials. It requires the light states with opposite chiralities interact differently with the materials. We demonstrate analogous rotation of polarization also exists for chiral fermions interacting with quantum electrodynamics plasma with vorticity using chiral kinetic theory. We find that the rotation of polarization is perpendicular both to vorticity and fermion momentum. The effect also exists for chiral fermions in quantum chromodynamics plasma with vorticity. It could lead to generation of a vector current when the p…
We present a first principles approach to study the Chiral Magnetic Effect during the pre-equilibrium stage of a heavy-ion collision. We discuss the dynamics of the Chiral Magnetic Effect and Chiral Magnetic Wave based on real-time lattice simulations with dynamical (Wilson and Overlap) fermions simultaneously coupled to color and electromagnetic fields. While for light quarks we observe a dissipation-less transport of charges as in anomalous hydrodynamics, we demonstrate that for heavier quarks the effects of explicit chiral symmetry breaking lead to a significant reduction of the associated …
We investigate the ferromagnetic (spin polarization) condensation in (2+1) flavor Nambu Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model with non-zero current quark masses at finite temperature and density which may be relevant in the context of neutron stars. The spin polarization condensation arises due to a tensor type interaction which may be generated due to non-perturbative effects in Quantum Chromodynamics(QCD). In this investigation we have shown the interplay between chiral condensate and spin polarization condensation for different values of tensor coupling. Spin polarization in the case of 2+1 flavor is dif…

The chiral plasmon modes of relativistic matter in background magnetic and strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields are studied in detail using the consistent chiral kinetic theory. The results reveal a number of anomalous features of these chiral magnetic and pseudomagnetic plasmons that could be used to identify them in experiment. In a system with nonzero electric (chiral) chemical potential, the background magnetic (pseudomagnetic) fields not only modify the values of the plasmon frequencies in the long-wavelength limit, but also affect the qualitative dependence on the wave vector. Similar mo…
We calculate anomaly induced conductivities from a holographic gauge theory model using Kubo formulas, making a clear conceptual distinction between thermodynamic state variables such as chemical potentials and external background fields. This allows us to pinpoint ambiguities in previous holographic calculations of the chiral magnetic conductivity. We also calculate the corresponding anomalous current three-point functions in special kinematic regimes. We compare the holographic results to weak coupling calculations using both dimensional regularization and cutoff regularization. In order to …
Chiral anomaly modifies the scattering processes in chiral systems which can be computed using the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory that couples electrodynamics to the pseudoscalar field $θ$ describing the topological charge induced be external sources. Assuming slow variation of the topological charge density, the fermion scattering cross section is computed in the Born approximation and is found to have a resonance at the scattering angles proportional to the chiral conductivity. As a result, the transport coefficients are suppressed at high temperatures. The anisotropy of the cross section arise…
We propose that chirally asymmetric plasma can be produced in the gap regions of the magnetospheres of pulsars and black holes. We show that, in the case of supermassive black holes situated in active galactic nuclei, the chiral charge density and the chiral chemical potential are very small and unlikely to have any observable effects. In contrast, the chiral asymmetry produced in the magnetospheres of magnetars can be substantial. It can trigger the chiral plasma instability that, in turn, can lead to observable phenomena in magnetars. In particular, the instability should trigger circularly …
We present a new way of deriving effective theories of dynamical electromagnetic fields in general media. It can be used to give a systematic formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with strong magnetic fields, including systems with chiral matter and Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. We work in the regime in which velocity and temperature fluctuations can be neglected. The resulting chiral anomalous MHD incorporates and generalizes the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral separation effect, the chiral electric separation effect, as well as recently derived strong-field MHD, all in a single coh…
We show that for an anomalous fluid carrying dissipationless chiral magnetic and/or vortical currents there is a frame in which a stationary obstacle experiences no drag, but energy and charge currents do not vanish, resembling superfluidity. However, unlike ordinary superfluid flow, the anomalous chiral currents do transport entropy in this frame. We show that the second law of thermodynamics completely determines the amounts of these anomalous non-dissipative currents in the "no-drag frame" as polynomials in temperature and chemical potential with known anomaly coefficients. These general re…
We present a first-principle study of anomaly induced transport phenomena by performing real-time lattice simulations with dynamical fermions coupled simultaneously to non-Abelian $SU(N_c)$ and Abelian $U(1)$ gauge fields. Investigating the behavior of vector and axial currents during a sphaleron transition in the presence of an external magnetic field, we demonstrate how the interplay of the Chiral magnetic (CME) and Chiral separation effect (CSE) lead to the formation of a propagating wave. We further analyze the dependence of the magnitude of the induced vector current and the propagation o…
We study a heavy impurity moving longitudinal with the direction of an external magnetic field in an anomalous chiral medium. Such system would carry a non-dissipative current of chiral magnetic effect associated with the anomaly. We show, by generalizing Landau's criterion for superfluidity, that the "anomalous component" which gives rise to the anomalous transport will {\it not} contribute to the drag experienced by an impurity. We argue on a very general basis that those systems with a strong magnetic field would exhibit an interesting transport phenomenon -- the motion of the heavy impurit…
The effects of finite magnetization and electric polarization on dissipative and non-dissipative (anomalous) transport coefficients of a chiral fluid are studied. First, using the second law of thermodynamics as well as Onsager's time reversal symmetry principle, the complete set of dissipative transport coefficients of this medium is derived. It is shown that the properties of the resulting shear and bulk viscosities are mainly affected by the anisotropy induced by external electric and magnetic fields. Then, using the fact that the anomaly induced currents do not contribute to entropy produc…
We investigate the form factors of the chiral-odd nucleon matrix element of the tensor current. In particular, we aim at the anomalous tensor magnetic form factors of the nucleon within the framework of the SU(3) and SU(2) chiral quark-soliton model. We consider $1/N_c$ rotational corrections and linear effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking with the symmetry-conserving quantization employed. We first obtain the results of the anomalous tensor magnetic moments for the up and down quarks: $κ_{T}^{u}=3.56$ and $κ_{T}^{d}=1.83$, respectively. The strange anomalous tensor magnetic moment is yielded to…
