We study the behavior of the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility of molecular magnets with complex bridging structure. Our computations are based on a post-Hartree-Fock method accounting for the intricate network of interatomic bonds and an effective spin-like Hamiltonian that captures the essential magnetic features of magnetic molecules. The devised method and the constructed Hamiltonian are further employed to characterize the magnetic properties of the molecular magnet Ni$_4$Mo$_{12}$. The obtained results reproduce both quantitatively and qualitatively the main features of the magnetic spectrum. Furthermore, the computations for the magnetization and the low-field susceptibility are in very good agreement with their experimental counterparts. In this respect, they improve upon the results obtained with conventional Heisenberg models.
The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetizati…
Five characteristic temperatures of TM = 148 K, TN = 142 K, Tt = 138 K, Tf ~ 125 K and Tg ~ 50 K were found by the measurements of the magnetization curves at various temperature. The spontaneous magnetization appears below TM. It increases up to M_{S} simeq 2 times 10^{-4} mu_{B} at Tt and then decreases steeply below Tt, which qualitatively agrees with the temperature dependence of magnetization obtained under field-cooling (FC) condition. On the other hand, the slope of the magnetization curve, namely the magnetic susceptibility, drops below TN, which coincides with the temperature dependen…
A systematic study the magnetization in La0.8.MnO3 films of thickness varying from ultra-thin to bulk-like has been conducted. The study reveals suppression of the bulk magnetization for films up to at least 1600 A. In addition, the surface (top 50 A) of all films exhibits depressed magnetization as observed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The reduced surface magnetization is attributed to the coexistence of magnetic and nonmagnetic components of the same chemical composition.
We have performed a detailed transverse magnetization study of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7. A transverse magnetization of about 10^{-3}M_{sat} is observed in the low-temperature ordered phases. These measurements result in the refinement of the Gd2Ti2O7 phase diagrams. Observation of a transverse magnetization indicates loss of the cubic symmetry in some of the magnetic phases and provides new information for a better understanding of the complicated magnetic ordering of Gd2Ti2O7.
The low temperature magnetization process of antiferromagnetic spin-S chains doped with mobile spin-(S-1/2) carriers is studied in an exactly solvable model. For sufficiently high magnetic fields the system is in a metallic phase with a finite gap for magnetic excitations. In this phase which exists for a large range of carrier concentrations x the zero temperature magnetization is determined by x alone. This leads to plateaus in the magnetization curve at a tunable fraction of the saturation magnetization. The critical behaviour at the edges of these plateaus is studied in detail.
The transition from the 1/3 magnetization plateau towards the saturation magnetization in azurite has been studied by low-temperature, high-magnetic-field, high-frequency proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The observed symmetrical splitting of the NMR spectra is incompatible with the longitudinal incommensurate order appearing when the longitudinal correlation function becomes dominant over the transverse one, which is the expected framework for the existence of the 2/3 magnetization plateau. The spectra are rather interpreted in terms of a more standard transverse antiferromagnetic (can…
We report on high-resolution dc-magnetization (M) measurements on a high-quality single crystal of YbCo2Si2. M was measured down to 0.05K and in fields up to 4T, with the magnetic field oriented along the crystallographic directions [100], [110] and [001] of the tetragonal structure.
We study the behavior of magnetization curve as a function of magnetic field in the immediate vicinity of the magnetization plateaus of 1D electron systems within the bosonization formalism. First we discuss the plateau that is formed at the saturation magnetization of 1D electron system. Interactions between electrons we treat in the lowest order of perturbation. We show that for isolated systems, where total number of electrons is not allowed to vary, magnetic susceptibility stays always finite away of half filling. Similar statement holds for many other magnetization plateaus supporting non…
In this study we calculate the fraction of condensed magnetic quasiparticles of TlCuCl3 from magnetization M(T,H)-data. It is independent of the direction of the magnetic field and slightly decreases with increasing magnetic field.
Magnetization measurements under direct electric currents were performed for toroidal magnetic ordered state of UNi$_4$B to test a recent theoretical prediction of current-induced magnetization in a metallic system lacking local inversion symmetry. We found that each of the electric currents parallel to [$2\bar{1}\bar{1}0$] and [$0001$] in the hexagonal 4-index notation induces uniform magnetization in the direction of [$01\bar{1}0$].The observed behavior of the induced magnetization is essentially consistent with the theoretical prediction; however it also shows an inconsistency suggesting tha…
Magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization process have been measured in \green polycrystal. In this compound, the magnetic manganese ion exists as Mn$^{5+}$ in a tetrahedral environment, and thus the magnetic interaction can be described by an S=1 Heisenberg model. The ground state was found to be a spin singlet with an excitation gap $Δ/k_{\rm B}=11.2$ K. Magnetization plateaus were observed at zero and at half of the saturation magnetization. These results indicate that the present system can be represented by a coupled antiferromagnetic dimer model.
Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is a weak ferromagnet where the spin arrangement is canted anti-ferromagnetic (AF). Moreover, the spin-structure coupling plays and important role in magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. In this concern the magnetization under zero applied field i.e. spontaneous magnetization would be interesting to study and would give insight into the novel magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Sophisticated techniques like neutron diffraction, $μ$ \textit{SR} etc has been used to understand the magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under zero applied field. To understand the magnetic behavior we hav…
Detailed magnetic properties of the compound Sr2YbRuO6 are presented here. The compound belongs to the family of double perovskites forming a monoclinic structure. Magnetization meas-urements reveal clear evidence for two components of magnetic ordering aligned opposite to each other, leading to a magnetization reversal, compensation temperature (T* = 34 K) and neg-ative magnetization at low temperatures and low magnetic fields. Heat capacity measurements corroborate the presence of two components in the magnetic ordering and a noticeable third anomaly at low temperatures (~15 K) which cannot …
Ginzburg-Landau bulk magnetization of itinerant electrons can provide a negative effective field in the Weiss model by coupling to localized magnetic moments. The coupling enforces remnant magnetization, which can be negative or positive depending on the sample magnetic history. Stable magnetic susceptibility of coupled nonequilibrium subsystems with magnetization reversal is always positive. Gauss-scale fields could be expected for switching between negative and positive remnant moments in semiconductors with coupling at ambient temperatures. Negative magnetization in ultra-high conducting po…
We report the effect of Si doping on the magnetization behavior of CeFe2. It is found that Si stabilizes the dynamic antiferromagnetic state of CeFe2. Multi-step magnetization behavior, unusual relaxation effect, thermal and magnetic history dependence, which are signatures of martensitic scenario, are found to be present in this system. We also show that one can induce the magnetization steps with the help of appropriate measurement protocol. Detailed magnetization relaxation studies have been carried out to understand the dynamics of magnetic phase transition.
Transport and non-equilibrium magnetization in monolayers of magnetic molecules subject to a bias voltage are considered. We apply a master-equation approach going beyond the sequential-tunneling approximation to study the Coulomb-blockade regime. While the current is very small in this case, the magnetization shows changes of the order of the saturation magnetization for small variations of the bias voltage. Inelastic cotunneling processes manifest themselves as differential-conductance steps, which are accompanied by much larger changes in the magnetization. In addition, the magnetization in…
We report a novel feature of the temperature induced magnetization jump observed along the a-axis of the GdVO3 single crystal at temperature TM = 0.8 K. Below TM, the compound shows no coercivity and remanent magnetization indicating a homogenous antiferromagnetic structure. However, we will demonstrate that the magnetic state below TM is indeed history dependent and it shows up in different jumps in the magnetization only when warming the sample through TM. Such a magnetic memory effect is highly unusual and suggesting different domain arrangements in the supposedly homogenous antiferromagnet…
Magnetization plateaus, visible as anomalies in magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures, are one of the hallmarks of frustrated magnetism. We show how an extremely robust half-magnetization plateau can arise from coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet, and develop a detailed symmetry of analysis of the simplest possible scenario for such a plateau state. The application of this theory to the spinel oxides CdCr2O4 and HgCr2O4, where a robust half magnetization plateau has been observed, is discussed.
We explore the behavior of the order parameter and the magnetization of antiferromagnetic solids subjected to mutually parallel staggered and magnetic fields. The effective field theory analysis of the partition function is taken up to the two-loop level, where the magnon-magnon interaction comes into play. These interaction effects, however, are small. A phenomenon that comes rather unexpectedly is that the finite-temperature magnetization increases with temperature when the strengths of the staggered and magnetic field are held constant.
The quantum nanomagnets show interesting site-dependent magnetic properties as a function of the temperature and the external magnetic field. In the paper we present the results of calculations for a finite quantum spin ladder with two legs, consisting of 12 spins $S=1/2$. We describe our system with isotropic quantum Heisenberg model and perform exact numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian to use canonical ensemble approach. Our analysis focuses on the site-dependent magnetization in the system, presenting magnetization distributions for various interaction parameters. We discuss extens…
