We report the effect of Si doping on the magnetization behavior of CeFe2. It is found that Si stabilizes the dynamic antiferromagnetic state of CeFe2. Multi-step magnetization behavior, unusual relaxation effect, thermal and magnetic history dependence, which are signatures of martensitic scenario, are found to be present in this system. We also show that one can induce the magnetization steps with the help of appropriate measurement protocol. Detailed magnetization relaxation studies have been carried out to understand the dynamics of magnetic phase transition.
Magnetization and torque measurements were performed on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals to study the mixed-state thermodynamics. These measurements allow the determination of both paramagnetic and vortex responses in the mixed-state magnetization. The paramagnetic magnetization is suppressed in the mixed state with the spin susceptibility increasing with increasing magnetic field. The dependence of spin susceptibility on magnetic field is due to the fact that heavy electrons contribute both to superconductivity and paramagnetism and a large Zeeman effect exists in this system. No anomaly in the vor…
Thermodynamic properties of cubic Heisenberg ferromagnets with competing exchange interactions are considered near the frustration point where the coefficient $D$ in the spin-wave spectrum $E_{\mathbf{k}}\sim D k^{2}$ vanishes. Within the Dyson-Maleev formalism it is found that at low temperatures thermal fluctuations stabilize ferromagnetism by increasing the value of $D$. For not too strong frustration this leads to an unusual "concave" shape of the temperature dependence of magnetization, which is in agreement with experimental data on the europium chalcogenides. Anomalous temperature behav…
We present the first experimental realization of an $S=2$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (F-AF) alternating chain in a new Mn-verdazyl complex [Mn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac=1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V=3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. Through the $ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculation, magnetization, and ESR measurements, this compound is confirmed to form an $S=2$ F-AF alternating chain with Ising anisotropy below about 100 K. Furthermore, we find an anomalous change in magnetization at 1/4 of the saturation value, which is probably a manifestation of the …
Significant decrease of spontaneous magnetization in frustrated one-dimensional ferro- and ferrimagnets due to non-magnetic impurities is predicted. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization method, we confirm that the total spin can vanish due to a single impurity in finite chains. Introducing the picture of magnetic domain inversion, we numerically investigate the impurity-density dependence of magnetization. In particular, we show that even with an infinitesimal density of impurities the magnetization in the ground state is reduced by about 40% from…
Ferromagnetic Weyl semi-metals exhibit an anomalous Hall effect, a consequence of their topological properties. In the non-interacting case, the derivative of the orbital magnetization with respect to chemical potential is proportional to this anomalous Hall effect, the Str$\check{\text{e}}$da formula. Motivated by compounds such as $\text{Mn}_3\text{Sn}$, here we investigate how interactions modeled by a Hubbard $U$ impact on both quantities when the Fermi energy is either aligned with the Weyl nodes or away from them. Within Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we find, in the Weyl semimetal regime,…
We study, at T=0, the anomalies in the magnetization curve of the S=1 two-leg ladder with frustrated interactions. We focus mainly on the existence of the $M=\Ms/2$ plateau, where $\Ms$ is the saturation magnetization. We use analytical methods (degenerate perturbation theory and non-Abelian bosonization) as well as numerical methods (level spectroscopy and density matrix renormalization group), which lead to the consistent conclusion with each other. We also touch on the $M=\Ms/4$ and $M=(3/4)\Ms$ plateaux and cusps.
Anomalous magnetic properties of the double perovskite ruthenates compound Sr2YRuO6 are reported here. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature in low magnetic fields show clear evidence for two components of magnetic order (TM1 ~ 32K and TM2 ~ 27K) aligned opposite to each other with respect to the magnetic field direction even though only Ru5+moments can order magnetically in this compound. The second component of the magnetic order at TM2 ~ 27K results only in a magnetization reversal, and not in the negative magnetization when the magnetization is measured in the field coole…
Magnetization and 63Cu NMR-NQR relaxation measurements are used to study the superconducting fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) oriented powders. In optimally doped YBCO the fluctuating negative magnetization M_{fl}(H,T) is rather well described by an anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional and the curves M_{fl}/sqrt{H} cross at Tc. In underdoped YBCO, instead, over a wide temperature range an anomalous diamagnetism is observed, stronger than in the optimally doped compound by about an order of magnitude. The field and temperature dependences of M_{fl} cannot be described either by an anis…
The magnetization process of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice is studied by the numerical-diagonalization method. We successfully obtain a new result of the magnetization process of a 42-site cluster in the entire range. Our analysis clarifies that the critical behavior around one-third of the height of the saturation is different from the typical behavior of the well-known magnetization plateau in two-dimensional systems. We also examine the effect of the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-type distortion added to the kagome lattice. We find at one-third of the height of the s…
The Hall resistivity, electrical resistivity and magnetization of single crystals of the tetragonal ferromagnet Yb14MnSb11 are reported as a function of the direction of the current, I, and magnetic field, H with respect to the principal crystallographic axes. With I along the unique c direction and H in the a-b plane, the anomalous Hall resistivity in the limit of zero applied field is negative for all temperatures T less than Tc= 53 K. In this direction, the anomalous Hall effect behaves in a manner similar to that observed in other ferromagnets such as Fe, Co, Mn5Ge3, and EuFe4Sb12. However…
The magnetization process of single crystals of the metallic kagomé ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 was carefully measured via magnetization and AC susceptibility. Field-dependent anomalous transitions in the magnetization indicate a low-field unconventionally ordered phase stabilized just below TC. The magnetic phase diagrams in applied fields along different crystallographic directions were determined. The magnetic relaxation process studied in frequencies covering five orders of magnitude from 0.01 to 1000 Hz indicates characteristic relaxation times of several seconds at the boarders of the anomalous…
We show theoretically that an undoped carbon nanotube might be an excitonic insulator---the long-sought phase of matter proposed by Keldysh, Kohn and others fifty years ago. We predict that the condensation of triplet excitons, driven by intervalley exchange interaction, spontaneously occurs at equilibrium if the tube radius is sufficiently small. The signatures of exciton condensation are its sizeable contributions to both the energy gap and the magnetic moment per electron. The increase of the gap might have already been measured, albeit with a different explanation [Deshpande et al., Scienc…
URu$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits an anomalous peak in the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility at the hidden order transition. In order to investigate this anomaly, we conducted direct magnetization measurements and investigated the detailed angular dependence of the $^{29}$Si nuclear magnetic resonance Knight shift tensor. We find that the nonlinear magnetization is smaller than previously reported, and the analogous nonlinear Knight shift tensor is below the detection limit. Our results suggest that the magnitude of the anomalous peak is sample dependent.
Several diamond bulk crystals with a concentration of electrically neutral single substitutional nitrogen atoms of $\lesssim 80~$ppm, the so-called C- or P1-centres, were irradiated with electrons at 10 MeV energy and low fluence. The results show a complete suppression of the irreversible behavior in field and temperature of the magnetization below $\sim 30$~K, after a decrease of $\lesssim 40~$ppm in the concentration of C-centres produced by the electron irradiation. This result indicates that magnetic C-centres are at the origin of the large hysteretic behavior found recently in nitrogen-d…
We investigate SFF structures (S-superconductor, F feromagnetic metal) with noncollinear magnetizations of F films with arbitrary transparency of FF interface. We show the existence of phase slips both at SF and FF interfaces which manifest themselves in the anomalous dependence of the spin-triplet correlations on misorientation angle between magnetization vectors in the F-layers. We discuss how these effects can be observed in experiments with Josephson $π$-junctions.
When conduction electrons are forced to follow the local spin texture, the resulting Berry phase can induce an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). In gadolinium, as in double-exchange magnets, the exchange interaction is mediated by the conduction electrons and the AHE may therefore resemble that of chromium dioxide and other metallic double-exchange ferromagnets. The Hall resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetization of single crystal gadolinium were measured in fields up to 30 T. Measurements between 2 K and 400 K are consistent with previously reported data. A scaling analysis for the Hall res…
We study TmB_4, a frustrated magnet on the Archimedean Shastry-Sutherland lattice, through magnetization and transport experiments. The lack of anisotropy in resistivity shows that TmB_4 is an electronically three-dimensional system. The magnetoresistance (MR) is hysteretic at low-temperature even though a corresponding hysteresis in magnetization is absent. The Hall resistivity shows unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and is linear above saturation despite a large MR. We propose that complex structures at magnetic domain walls may be responsible for the hysteretic MR and may also lead…
We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in SrRuO$_3$ thin films, uncovering wide regimes of wavelength, temperature, and magnetic field where the Kerr rotation is not simply proportional to the magnetization but instead displays two-component behavior. One component of the MOKE signal tracks the average magnetization, while the second "anomalous" component bears a resemblance to anomalies in the Hall resistivity which have been previously reported in skyrmion materials. We present a theory showing that the MOKE anomalies arise from the non-monotonic relation between the Kerr angle and …
We introduce a cluster extension of multipole moments to discuss the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) states in a unified framework. We first derive general symmetry requirements for the AHE in the presence or absence of the spin-orbit coupling, by considering the symmetry of the Berry curvature in k space. The cluster multipole (CMP) moments are then defined to quantify the macroscopic magnetization in non-collinear AFM states, as a natural generalization of the magnetization in FM states. We identify the macroscopic CMP order which induces th…

We report high-temperature (300-1120 K) magnetization data of Fe and Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded in multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The magnetic impurity concerntations are precisely determined by both high-energy synchrotron x-ray diffractometer and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. We unambiguously show that the magnetic moments of Fe and Fe3O4 nanoparticles are enhanced by a factor of about 3 compared with what they would be expected to have for free (unembedded) magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetization enhancement factor is nearly independent of the applied magnetic field but …
By means of polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field of 7.0 T at 1.6 K an anomalously large magnetization density is observed on the in-plane oxygen in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$. Field-induced moments of different ions are determined by refinement on the flipping ratios, yielding $μ$$_{Ru}$ = 0.346(11) $μ$$_B$, $μ_{O1}$ = 0.076(6) $μ$$_B$ and $μ_{O2}$ = 0.009(6) $μ$$_B$. The moment on the oxygen arises from the strong hybridization between the Ru-4d and O-2p orbitals. %The maximum entropy method is used for the %reconstruction of the magnetization density and reveals a strongly anis…
We performed a systematic study of the temperature- and field-dependence of magnetization and resistivity of Gd2PdSi3, which is a centrosymmetric skyrmion crystal. While the magnetization behavior is consistent with the reported phase diagram based on susceptibility, we show that a phase diagram can also be constructed based on the anomalous magnetoresistance with one-to-one correspondence among all the features. In addition, the crossover boundary into the field-induced ferromagnetic state is also identified. Our results suggest that the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations above the Néel temperat…
Ac-suseptibility measurements were performed in the metallic helimagnet Gd_{1-x}Y_{x} alloy. A remarkable increase of the imaginary part of the ac-suseptibility was observed in the temperature range of the helimagnetic phase. Moreover, a strong nonlinearity of the magnetization was observed at paramagnetic-helimagnetic transition temperature T_{N}. On the other hand, These anomalous behavior were not observed in similar rare-earth helimagnets Ho and Ho_{1-x}Y_{x}. It strongly suggests that the weak magnetic anisotropy of the Gd-moments is responsible for the anomalous slow dynamics in the heli…
Piezomagnetism couples strain linearly to magnetic order producing magnetization. Thus, unlike magnetostriction, it enables bidirectional control of a net magnetic moment. If this effect becomes large at room temperature, it may be technologically relevant, similar to its electric analogue, piezoelectricity. To date, however, the studies of the piezomagnetic effect have been primarily restricted to antiferromagnetic (AF) insulators at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report the discovery of a large piezomagnetism in a metal at room temperature. Strikingly, by using the AF Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$S…
It is well established that the anomalous Hall effect that a ferromagnet displays scales with its magnetization. Therefore, an antiferromagnet that has no net magnetization should exhibit no anomalous Hall effect. Here we show that the non-collinear triangular antiferromagnet Mn3Ge exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect comparable to that of ferromagnetic metals; the magnitude of the anomalous conductivity is 500 per ohm per cm at 2 K and 50 per ohm per cm at room temperature. The angular dependence of the anomalous Hall effect measurements confirm that the small residual in-plane magnetic mom…
We have studied the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in strained thin films of the frustrated antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$NiN. The AHE does not follow the conventional relationships with magnetization or longitudinal conductivity and is enhanced relative to that expected from the magnetization in the antiferromagnetic state below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 260$\,K. This enhancement is consistent with origins from the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, as the latter is closely related to that found in Mn$_{3}$Ir and Mn$_{3}$Pt where a large AHE is induced by the Berry curvature. As the Berry phase induce…
Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of a ferromagnetic semiconductor anatase \cotio thin film is studied from 10K to 300K. Magnetic field dependence of anomalous Hall resistance is coincident with that of magnetization, while the anomalous Hall resistance decreases at low temperature in spite of nearly temperature-independent magnetization. Anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_AHE is found to be proportional to the square of Hall mobility, suggesting that charge scattering strongly affects the AHE in this system. The anatase Ti1-xCoxO2 also follows a scaling relationship to conductivity sigma_xx as sigma…
SQUID magnetization measurements in oriented powders of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$% _{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, with $x$ ranging from 0 to 0.2, for $y\approx 6.1$ and $y\approx 6.97$, have been performed in order to study the doping dependence of the fluctuating diamagnetism above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$. While for optimally doped compounds the diamagnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curves $-M_{fl}(T=const$) vs. $H$ are rather well justified on the basis of an anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional, in underdoped and overdoped regimes an anomalous diamagnetism is …
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which in long-range ordered ferromagnets appears as a voltage transverse to the current and usually is proportional to the magnetization, often is believed to be of negligible size in antiferromagnets due to their low uniform magnetization. However, recent experiments and theory have demonstrated that certain antiferromagnets with a non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments exhibit a sizeable spontaneous AHE at zero field due to a non-vanishing Berry curvature arising from the quantum mechanical phase of the electron's wave functions. Here we show that anti…
The magnetization in a lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.018$) single crystal was measured. Spin-flop transition was clearly observed in the hole doped antiferromagnetically ordered state under increasing magnetic fields perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ plane. In the spin-glass phase below 25K, the spin-flop transition becomes broad but the step in the magnetization curve associated with the transition remains finite at the lowest temperature. We show in this report that, at low temperature, the homogeneous antiferromagnetic order is disturbed by the re-distribution of holes, and that th…
As they do not rely on the presence of any crystal symmetry, Weyl nodes are robust topological features of an electronic structure that can occur at any momentum and energy. Acting as sinks and sources of Berry curvature, Weyl nodes have been predicted to strongly affect the transverse electronic response, like in the anomalous Hall or Nernst effects. However, to observe large anomalous effects the Weyl nodes need to be close to or at the Fermi-level, which implies the band structure must be tuned by an external parameter, e.g. chemical doping or pressure. Here we show that in a ferromagnetic …
Magnetization has been measured for polycrystalline samples of LaCo1-xRhxO3 (0 {\leq} x {\leq} 0.9) in order to investigate magnetism induced in the solid solution of two nonmagnetic end phases of LaCoO3 and LaRhO3. It is found that a ferromagnetic transition is observed below 15 K in the range of x from 0.1 to 0.4. The effective Bohr magnetic moment evaluated from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility at around room temperature is independent of x for 0 < x < 0.5 (approximately 3 μB per formula unit), and rapidly decreases above x = 0.5. On the basis of detailed magnetization …
The Hall effect in SrRuO$_3$ thin-films near the thickness limit for ferromagnetism shows an extra peak in addition to the ordinary and anomalous Hall effects. This extra peak has been attributed to a topological Hall effect due to two-dimensional skyrmions in the film around the coercive field; however, the sign of the anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO$_3$ can change as a function of saturation magnetization. Here we report Hall peaks in SrRuO$_3$ in which volumetric magnetometry measurements and magnetic force microscopy indicate that the peaks result from the superposition of two anomalous Hal…
We investigate the $S=1/2$ quantum spin antiferromagnets on the triangular and Kagome lattices in magnetic field, using the numerical exact diagonalization. Particularly we focus on an anomalous magnetization behavior of each system at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. The critical exponent analyses suggest that it is a conventional magnetization plateau on the triangular lattice, while an unconventional phenomenon, called the magnetization ramp, on the Kagome lattice.
The emergence of a finite staggered magnetization in quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets subject to a uniform magnetic field can be viewed as Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Using non-perturbative results for the infrared behavior of the interacting Bose gas, we present exact results for the staggered spin-spin correlation functions of quantum antiferromagnets in a magnetic field at zero temperature. In particular, we show that in dimensions 1 < D <= 3 the longitudinal dynamic structure factor S_parallel(q,omega) describing staggered spin fluctuations in the direction of the staggered m…
We have studied the pressure effect on magnetostriction, both in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, of a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite single crystal over the temperature region where the field-induced ferromagnetic metal (FMM) transition takes place. For comparison, we have also examined the pressure dependence of magnetization curves at the corresponding temperatures. The applied pressure reduces the critical field of the FMM transition and it enhances the remanent magnetostriction. An anomalous pressure effect on the remanent lattice relaxation is observed a…
The heavy fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ is a candidate for chiral, time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity with a nodal gap structure. Here, we microscopically visualized superconductivity and spatially inhomogeneous ferromagnetism in URu$_2$Si$_2$. We observed linear-$T$ superfluid density, consistent with d-wave pairing symmetries including chiral d-wave, but did not observe the spontaneous magnetization expected for chiral d-wave. Local vortex pinning potentials had either four- or two-fold rotational symmetries with various orientations at different locations. Taken togeth…
The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping o…
We study the anomalous Hall effect, magneto-optical properties, and nonlinear optical properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate as well as twisted double bilayer graphene systems. We show that non-vanishing valley polarizations in twisted graphene systems would give rise to anomalous Hall effect which can be tuned by in-plane magnetic fields. The valley polarized states are also associated with giant Faraday/Kerr rotations in the terahertz frequency regime. Moreover, both hBN-aligned TBG and TDBG exhibit colossal nonlinear optical respons…
Manganese phosphide MnP has been investigated for decades because of its rich magnetic phase diagram. It is well known that the MnP exhibits the ferromagnetic phase transition at $\Tc=292$ K and the helical magnetic phase below $\TN=47$ K at zero field. Recently, a novel magnetic phase transition was observed at $T^* = 282$ K when the magnetic field is lower than 5 Oe. However, the nature of the new phase has not been illuminated yet. In order to reveal it, we performed the AC and the DC magnetization measurements for a single crystal MnP at very low field. A divergent behavior of the real and…
We obtain a set of general formulae for determining magnetizations, including the usual electromagnetic magnetization as well as the gravitomagnetic energy magnetization. The magnetization corrections to the thermal transport coefficients are explicitly demonstrated. Our theory provides a systematic approach for properly evaluating the thermal transport coefficients of magnetic systems, eliminating the unphysical divergence from the direct application of the Kubo formula. For an anomalous Hall system, the corrected thermal Hall conductivity obeys the Wiedemann-Franz law.
As in conventional ferromagnets, the Hall resistivity rho_xy of a La_{2/3}(Ca,Pb)_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystal exhibits both ordinary and anomalous contributions at low temperature. However, these contributions, unexpectedly, have opposite signs. Near Tc, the ordinary contribution is no longer evident and rho_xy is solely determined by the sample magnetization, reaching an extremum at approximately 40% of the saturated magnetization. A new model for the anomalous Hall effect, incorporating the quantal phase accumulated by double-exchange, three-site hopping reproduces this result. Below Tc, rho_x…
