We present the characteristics of a simple waveguiding structure constructed by anisotropic birefringent crystal-metal-chiral medium, anisotropic-metal-chiral in short, and reveal the chiral-dependent dispersion and propagation properties of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). We demonstrate its remarkable discrimination ability to the magnitude and sign of both the real and imaginary part of the chirality parameter. The anisotropy plays a key role in such performance and shows tuneable ability in enantiomeric discrimination even when the chirality parameter is complex-valued. Most importantly, the physical origin of chiral discrimination stems from the extrinsic chirality of the system, which arises from the mutual orientation of the SPPs and the optical axis. Moreover, we also clarify the fundamental physics behind the chiral discriminating behaviour by associating the intrinsic quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) of the SPPs with the electromagnetic field analysis. This structure does not rely on complicated fabrication but provides the opportunity of on-chip surface-sensitive biosensing. We anticipate that our work will stimulate intensive research to investigate the anisotropy-induced chiral sensing techniques in plasmonic platforms.
It has been assumed that optical activity can be measured by illuminating alternatively a material with left- and right- handed circular polarized light and analyzing the differential response. This simple and intuitive approach is in general incorrect, and has led to misleading idea that extrinsic chirality involves optical activity.
We present the new planar extrinsic chirality metamaterial (ECM) design that manifests giant circular dichroism (CD) in the visible spectrum range rather than usual near-infrared and terahertz range. Effects of incident beam angles and meta-molecules unit sizes on the CD spectrums were theoretically analyzed; Physical mechanism was illustrated in new figures of asymmetrical current excitation in neighboring unit cells.
We investigate a geometrically symmetric gold-silicon sphere heterodimer and reveal its extrinsic chiroptical response caused by the interaction with a substrate. The chiroptical response is obtained for oblique incidence owing to the coalescence of extrinsic chirality, heterogeneity and substrate induced break of symmetry. To quantify the chiral response we utilize k-space polarimetry. We elucidate the physics of the involved phenomena by considering scattering properties of the heterodimer in free space and find that incident linearly polarized light is scattered in a spin-split fashion. We …
The possibility to enhance chiral light-matter interactions through plasmonic nanostructures provides entirely new opportunities for greatly improving the detection limits of chiroptical spectroscopies down to the single molecule level. The most pronounced of these chiral interactions occur in the ultraviolet (UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is difficult to access with conventional localized plasmon resonance based sensors. Although Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) on noble metal films can sustain resonances in the desired spectral range, their transverse magnetic nature has …
We propose a framework that connects the spatial symmetries of a metasurface to its material parameter tensors and its scattering matrix. This provides a simple yet effective way to effortlessly determine properties of a metasurface scattering response, such as chirality or asymmetric transmission, and which of its effective material parameters should be taken into account in the prospect of a homogenization procedure. In contrast to existing techniques, this approach does not require any a priori knowledge of group theory or complicated numerical simulation schemes, hence making it fast, easy…

We suggest that all-photodesigned metamaterials, sub-wavelength custom patterns of photo-excited carriers on a semiconductor, can display an exotic extrinsic electromagnetic chirality in terahertz (THz) frequency range. We consider a photo-induced pattern exhibiting 1D geometrical chirality, i.e. its mirror image can not be superposed onto itself by translations without rotations and, in the long wavelength limit, we evaluate its bianisotropic response. The photo-induced extrinsic chirality turns out to be fully reconfigurable by recasting the optical illumination which supports the photo-exci…

Coupling between light and material excitations underlies a wide range of optical phenomena. Polaritons are eigenstates of a coupled system with hybridized wave function. Owing to their hybrid composition, polaritons exhibit at the same time properties typical for photonic and electronic excitations, thus offering new ways for controlling electronic transport and even chemical kinetics. While most theoretical and experimental efforts have been focused on polaritons with electric-dipole coupling between light and matter, in chiral quantum emitters, electronic transitions are characterized by si…
Circular dichroism is widely used for characterizing organic and biological materials, but measurements at a single molecule level are challenging because differences in absorption for opposite helicities are small. Here we show that extrinsic chirality can induce giant circular dichroism in individual carbon nanotubes, with degree of polarization reaching 65%. The signal has a large dependence on the incidence angle, consistent with the interpretation that mirror symmetry breaking by the optical wave vector is responsible for the effect. We propose that field-induced charge distribution resul…
The broken mirror symmetry in subwavelength photonic systems has manifested many interesting chiroptical effects such as optical rotation and circular dichroism. When such systems are placed periodically in a lattice form, in addition to intrinsic chirality, extrinsic chirality also takes part, and the overall effect depends not only on the basis and lattice but also the excitation configuration. Here, we study planar chiral nanohole arrays in square lattice that support Bloch-like surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and clarify how the system geometry and the excitation contribute to circular d…
In this work, the circular dichroisms (CD) of nanorice heterodimers consisting of two parallel arranged nanorices with the same size but different materials are investigated theoretically. Symmetry-breaking is introduced by using different materials and oblique incidence to achieve strong CD at the vicinity of Fano resonance peaks. We demonstrate that all Au-Ag heterodimers exhibit multipolar Fano resonances and strong CD effect. A simple quantitative analysis shows that the structure with larger Fano asymmetry factor has stronger CD. The intensity and peak positions of the CD effect can be fl…

We have studied the dependence of the rotation angle and ellipticity on the sample orientation and incident polarization from metallic nanohole arrays. The arrays have four-fold symmetry and thus do not possess any intrinsic chirality. We elucidate the role of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in determining the extrinsic chirality and we verify the results by using finite-difference time-domain simulation. Our results have indicated the outgoing reflection arises from the interference between the nonresonant background, which preserves the input polarization, and the SPP radiation damping, wh…
Chiral surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be generated by linearly polarized light incident at the end of a nanowire, exciting a coherent superposition of three specific nanowire waveguide modes. Images of chiral SPPs on individual nanowires obtained from quantum dot fluorescence excited by the SPP evanescent field reveal the chirality predicted in our theoretical model. The handedness and spatial extent of the helical periods of the chiral SPPs depend on the input polarization angle and nanowire diameter as well as the dielectric environment. Chirality is preserved in the free-space output…
We examine, both experimentally and theoretically, an interaction of tightly focused polarized light with a slit on a metal surface supporting plasmon-polariton modes. Remarkably, this simple system can be highly sensitive to the polarization of the incident light and offers a perfect quantum-weak-measurement tool with a built-in post-selection in the plasmon-polariton mode. We observe the plasmonic spin Hall effect in both coordinate and momentum spaces which is interpreted as weak measurements of the helicity of light with real and imaginary weak values determined by the input polarization. …
Chiral nanophotonic devices are promising candidates for chiral molecules sensing, polarization diverse nanophotonics and display technologies. Active chiral nanophotonic devices, where the optical chirality can be controlled by an external stimulus has triggered great research interest. However, efficient modulation of the optical chirality has been challenging. Here, we demonstrate switching of the extrinsic chirality by applied magnetic fields in a magneto-plasmonic metasurface device based on a magneto-optical oxide material, Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG). Thanks to the low optical loss and strong …
We design, in a most simple way, Fabry-Perot cavities with longitudinal chiral modes by sandwiching between two smooth metallic silver mirrors a layer of polystyrene made planar chiral by torsional shear stress. We demonstrate that the helicity-preserving features of our cavities stem from a spin-orbit coupling mechanism seeded inside the cavities by the specific chiroptical features of planar chirality. Planar chirality gives rise to an extrinsic source of three-dimensional chirality under oblique illumination that endows the cavities with enantiomorphic signatures measured experimentally and…
We present theoretical and experimental study of plasmonic Hetero-Chiral structures, comprised of constituents with opposite chirality. We devise, simulate and experimentally demonstrate different schemes featuring selective surface plasmon polariton focusing of orthogonal polarization states and standing plasmonic vortex fields.
The low sensitivity of photons to external magnetic fields is one of the major challenges for the engineering of photonic lattices with broken time-reversal symmetry. Here we show that time-reversal symmetry can be broken for microcavity polaritons in the absence of any external magnetic field thanks to polarization dependent polariton interactions. Circularly polarized excitation of carriers in a micropillar induces a Zeeman-like energy splitting between polaritons of opposite polarizations. In combination with optical spin-orbit coupling inherent to semiconductor microstructures, the interac…
We consider a p-polarized surface electromagnetic wave (a classical surface polariton) at the interface between the vacuum and a metal or left-handed medium. We show that the evanescent electromagnetic waves forming the surface polariton inevitably possess a backward spin energy flow, which, together with a superluminal orbital energy flow, form the total Poynting vector. This spin energy flow generates a well-defined (but not quantized) spin angular momentum of surface polaritons which is orthogonal to the propagation direction. The spin of evanescent waves arises from the imaginary longitudi…
Chiral optical effects are generally quantified along some specific incident directions of exciting waves (especially for extrinsic chiralities of achiral structures) or defined as direction-independent properties by averaging the responses among all structure orientations. Though of great significance for various applications, chirality extremization (maximized or minimized) with respect to incident directions or structure orientations have not been explored, especially in a systematic manner. In this study we examine the chiral responses of open photonic structures from perspectives of quasi…
We show that the chirality of artificial media, made of a planar periodic arrangement of three-dimensional metallic meta-atoms, can be tailored. The meta-atoms support localized plasmon polaritons and exhibit a chirality exceeding that of pseudo-planar chiral metamaterials by an order of magnitude. Two design approaches are investigated in detail. The first is the referential example for a chiral structure, namely a Moebius strip. The second example is a cut wire - split-ring resonator geometry that can be manufactured with state-of-the-art nanofabrication technologies. Driven into resonance t…
We introduce and theoretically analyze the concept of manipulating optical chirality via strong coupling of the optical modes of chiral nanostructures with excitonic transitions in molecular layers or semiconductors. With chirality being omnipresent in chemistry and biomedicine, and highly desirable for technological applications related to efficient light manipulation, the design of nanophotonic architectures that sense the handedness of molecules or generate the desired light polarization in an externally controllable manner is of major interdisciplinary importance. Here we propose that such…
Photons with spin angular momentum possess intrinsic chirality which underpins many phenomena including nonlinear optics1, quantum optics2, topological photonics3 and chiroptics4. Intrinsic chirality is weak in natural materials, and recent theoretical proposals5-7 aimed to enlarge circular dichroism by resonant metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum that enhance substantially chiral light-matter interaction. Those insightful works resort to three-dimensional sophisticated geometries, which are too challenging to be realized for optical frequencies8. Therefore, most of the exper…
The plasmonic chirality has drawn a lot of attention because of the tunable circular dichroism (CD) and the enhancement for the signal of chiral molecules. Different mechanisms have been proposed for explaining the plasmonic CD, however, a quantitative one like ab initio mechanism in chiral molecules is still unavailable. In this work, a mechanism similar to the chiral molecules is analyzed. The giant extrinsic circular dichroism of plasmonic splitting rectangle ring is quantitatively investigated theoretically. The interplay of electric and magnetic modes of the meta-structure is proposed to …
In this paper, we describe the implementation of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) to probe the chirality of plasmonic nanostructures. We demonstrate experimentally spin-driven directional coupling as well as vortex generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by nanostructures built with T-shaped and $Λ$- shaped apertures. Using this far-field method, quantitative inspections, including directivity and extinction ratio measurements, are achieved via polarization analysis in both image and Fourier planes. To support our experimental findings, we develop an analytical model based on a multi…
We propose a Babinet-invertible chiral metasurface for achieving dynamically reversible and strong circular dichroism (CD). The proposed metasurface is composed of VO$_2$-metal hybrid structure, and when VO$_2$ transits between the dielectric state and the metallic state, the metasurface unit cell switches between complementary structures that are designed according to the Babinet principle. This leads to a large and reversible CD tuning range between $\pm 0.5$ at 0.97~THz, which is larger than the literature. We attribute the CD effect to extrinsic chirality of the proposed metasurface. We en…
Photonic band structures are a typical fingerprint of periodic optical structures, and are usually observed in spectroscopic quantities such as transmission, reflection and absorption. Here we show that also the chiro-optical response of a metasurface constituted by a lattice of non-centrosymmetric, L-shaped holes in a dielectric slab shows a band structure, where intrinsic and extrinsic chirality effects are clearly recognized and connected to localized and delocalized resonances. Superchiral near-fields can be excited in correspondence to these resonances, and anomalous behaviors as a functi…
