We introduce and theoretically analyze the concept of manipulating optical chirality via strong coupling of the optical modes of chiral nanostructures with excitonic transitions in molecular layers or semiconductors. With chirality being omnipresent in chemistry and biomedicine, and highly desirable for technological applications related to efficient light manipulation, the design of nanophotonic architectures that sense the handedness of molecules or generate the desired light polarization in an externally controllable manner is of major interdisciplinary importance. Here we propose that such capabilities can be provided by the mode splitting resulting from polaritonic hybridization. Starting with an object with well-known chiroptical response -- here, for a proof of concept, a chiral sphere -- we show that strong coupling with a nearby excitonic material generates two distinct frequency regions that retain the object's chirality density and handedness, which manifest most clearly through anticrossings in circular-dichroism or differential-scattering dispersion diagrams. These windows can be controlled by the intrinsic properties of the excitonic layer and the strength of the interaction, enabling thus the post-fabrication manipulation of optical chirality. Our findings are further verified via simulations of the circular dichroism of a realistic chiral architecture, namely a helical assembly of plasmonic nanospheres embedded in a resonant matrix.
When circularly polarized light interacts with a nanostructure, the optical response depends on the geometry of the structure. If the nanostructure is chiral (i.e., it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image), then its optical response, both in near-field and far-field, depends on the handedness of the incident light. In contrast, achiral structures exhibit identical far-field responses for left- and right-circular polarization. Here, we show that a perfectly achiral nanostructure, a plasmonic metamolecule with trigonal D3h symmetry, exhibits a near-field response that is sensitive to the h…

Large optical chirality in the vicinity of achiral high index dielectric nanostructures has been recently demonstrated as useful means of enhancing molecular circular dichroism. We theoretically study the spatial dependence of optical chirality enhancement in the vicinity of high index dielectric nanodisks and highlight its importance for the design of nanophotonic platforms for circular dichroism enhancement. Using a T-matrix framework, we demonstrate that depending on disk aspect ratio chirality is enhanced preferentially along different directions. We employ various statistical procedures (…
Sensitivity to molecular chirality is crucial for many fields, from biology and chemistry to the pharmaceutical industry. By generating superchiral light, nanophotonics has brought innovative solutions to reduce the detection volume and increase sensitivity at the cost of a non-selectivity of light chirality or a strong contribution to the background. Here, we theoretically propose an achiral plasmonic resonator, based on a rectangular nanoslit in a thin gold layer behaving as a magnetic dipole, to generate a tunable nanosource of purely superchiral light. This nanosource is free of any backgr…
We present a new design of plasmonic nanoantenna with a slant gap for optical chirality engineering. At resonance, the slant gap provides highly enhanced electric field parallel to external magnetic field with a phase delay of 90 degree, resulting in enhanced optical chirality. We show by numerical simulations that upon linearly polarized excitation our achiral nanoantenna can generate near field with enhanced optical chirality that can be tuned by the slant angle and resonance condition. Our design can be easily realized and may find applications in circular dichroism enhancement.
Modern optical microscopy methods have been advanced to provide super resolution at high imaging speed, but not chirality discriminative. We recently proposed chiral structured-illumination microscopy (SIM) method to image chiral fluorescent domains at sub-wavelength resolution. Chiral SIM is suitable for imaging chiral domains at sub-wavelength resolution but loses the high spatial frequency of the achiral ones. In order to obtain the full picture of all fluorescent domains at sub-wavelength resolution, we propose an advanced version of chiral SIM, termed double SIM, which enables simultaneou…
Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional analogues of metamaterials, are ideal platforms for sensing molecular chirality at the nanoscale, e.g. of inclusions of natural optically active molecules, as they offer large accessible areas (they are essentially surfaces) and can accommodate the necessary strong resonances for coupling the probing radiation with the chiral inclusions. Here, we examine theoretically achiral isotropic metasurfaces, and we treat them as polarizable surfaces that support resonant electric and magnetic currents, which are coupled via the chiral inclusions. We derive analytically…
The circular dichroism (ICD) induced from interaction of chiral molecules with achiral plasmonic metal nanostructures has improved sensitivity of molecular chirality detection. Although experimental results have presented several orders magnitude of ICD enhancement, but the cause of ICD induction has not arise from previous studies. In this paper, a theory presented for explain mechanism of ICD induction from near field interaction of chiral molecule with achiral nanostructure. By introducing dipole approaching of chiral molecule and a near field approximation of molecule-nanostructure interac…
We report that the classical phenomena of optical activity and circular dichroism, which are traditionally associated with chirality (helicity) of organic molecules, proteins and inorganic structures, can be observed in non-chiral artificial media. Intriguingly, our metamaterial structure yields exceptionally strong resonant optical activity, which also leads to the appearance of a backward wave, a characteristic sign of negative-index media.
Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we demonstrate tunable polarization rotation and circular dichroism in intrinsically nonchiral planar terahertz metamaterials without twofold rotational symmetry. The observed effect is due to extrinsic chirality arising from the mutual orientation of the metamaterial plane and the propagation direction of the incident terahertz wave.
We suggest that electromagnetic chirality, generally displayed by 3D or 2D complex chiral structures, can occur in 1D patterned composites whose components are achiral. This feature is highly unexpected in a 1D system which is geometrically achiral since its mirror image can always be superposed onto it by a 180 deg rotation. We analytically evaluate from first principles the bi-anisotropic response of multilayered metamaterials and we show that the chiral tensor is not vanishing if the system is geometrically one-dimensional chiral, i.e. its mirror image can not be superposed onto it by using…
Recently, we proposed a metasurface design for chiral sensing that (i) results in enhanced chiroptical signals by more than two orders of magnitude for ultrathin, subwavelength, chiral samples over a uniform and accessible area, (ii) allows for complete measurements of the total chirality (magnitude and sign of both its real and imaginary part), and (iii) offers the possibility for a crucial signal reversal (excitation with reversed polarization) that enables chirality measurements in an absolute manner, i.e., without the need for sample removal. Our design is based on the anisotropic response…
We derived an analytical formula for the optical force acting on a small anisotropic chiral particle. The behavior of chiral particles is qualitatively different from achiral particles due to new chirality dependent terms which couple mechanical linear momentum and optical spin angular momentum. Such coupling induced by chirality can serve as a new mechanism to achieve optical pulling force. Our analytical predictions are verified by numerical simulations.
We have studied the dependence of the rotation angle and ellipticity on the sample orientation and incident polarization from metallic nanohole arrays. The arrays have four-fold symmetry and thus do not possess any intrinsic chirality. We elucidate the role of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in determining the extrinsic chirality and we verify the results by using finite-difference time-domain simulation. Our results have indicated the outgoing reflection arises from the interference between the nonresonant background, which preserves the input polarization, and the SPP radiation damping, wh…
In plasmonic chirality, the phenomenon of circular dichroism for achiral nanoparitcles caused by Coulomb interaction between metal nanoparticles (NPs) and chiral molecules have been studied. At the same time, under the resonance condition, the dye molecules and metal NPs will produce huge Rabi splitting due to strong coupling. If the chiral molecules are at the resonance of the plasmon, what will happen for the strong interaction between the plasmon and molecules with chirality introduced? In this paper, we investigate a spherical core-shell model and analyze its spectral phenomena under the e…
In this paper, we describe the implementation of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) to probe the chirality of plasmonic nanostructures. We demonstrate experimentally spin-driven directional coupling as well as vortex generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by nanostructures built with T-shaped and $Λ$- shaped apertures. Using this far-field method, quantitative inspections, including directivity and extinction ratio measurements, are achieved via polarization analysis in both image and Fourier planes. To support our experimental findings, we develop an analytical model based on a multi…

Optical beams with a new and distinctive type of helicity have become the subject of much recent interest. While circularly polarised light comprises photons with spin angular momentum, these optically engineered 'twisted beams' (optical vortices) are endowed with orbital angular momentum. Here, the wave- front surface of the electromagnetic fields assumes helical form. To date, optical vortices have generally been studied only in their interactions with achiral matter. This study assesses what new features, if any, can be expected when such beams are used to interrogate a chiral system.
We experimentally investigate the chiral optical response of an individual nanostructure consisting of three equally sized spherical nanoparticles made of different materials and arranged in \ang{90} bent geometry. Placing the nanostructure on a substrate converts its morphology from achiral to chiral. Chirality leads to pronounced differential extinction, i.e., circular dichroism and optical rotation, or equivalently, circular birefringence, which would be strictly forbidden in the absence of a substrate or heterogeneity. This first experimental observation of the substrate-induced break of s…
We introduce a microscopy technique that facilitates the prediction of spatial features of chirality of nanoscale samples by exploiting photo-induced optical force exerted on an achiral tip in the vicinity of the test specimen. The tip-sample interactive system is illuminated by structured light to probe both the transverse and longitudinal (with respect to the beam propagation direction) components of the sample magnetoelectric polarizability as the manifestation of its sense of handedness, i.e., chirality. We specifically prove that although circularly polarized waves are adequate to detect …
It has been long recognized that the spatial polarization of the electronic clouds in molecules, and the spatial arrangements of atoms into chiral molecular structures, play crucial roles in physics, chemistry and biology. However, these two fundamental concepts - chirality and polarization - have remained unrelated so far. This work connects them by introducing and exploring the concept of polarization of chirality. We show that, like charge, chirality, or handedness, can be polarized, and that such polarization leads to fundamental consequences, demonstrated here using light. First, we analy…
There is recurrent interest in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) conveyed by optical vortices, which are structured beams with a helically twisted wavefront. Particular significance is attached to the issue of how, in its interactions with matter, light conveying OAM might prove sensitive to the relative handedness and degree of twist in the associated optical wavefront. As a result of recent experimental and theoretical studies, the supposition that beams with OAM might enable discrimination between oppositely handed forms of matter has become a renewed focus of attention. Some of the tantal…
Atoms are usually thought of as achiral objects. However, one can construct superpositions of atomic states that are chiral [1]. Here we show how to excite such superpositions with tailored light fields both in the weak-field and strong-field regimes, using realistic laser parameters. First, we use time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) simulations to demonstrate the creation of a time-dependent bound chiral wavepacket in sodium atoms. Second, we show how the time-dependent handedness of this wavepacket can be probed by photoelectron circular dichroism, in spite of the central symmetry of …
Optical chirality is central to many industrial photonic technologies including enantiomer identification, ellipsometry-based tomography and spin multiplexing in optical communication. However, a substantial chiral response requires a typical three-dimensional (3D) constituent, thereby making the paradigm highly complex. Photonic devices integrated with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have shown potential for chiral light control by external stimuli, but the stimuli usually demand a destructive dosage. Here, we report a simple synthetic chiral paradigm that is electrically programmable w…
We propose a framework that connects the spatial symmetries of a metasurface to its material parameter tensors and its scattering matrix. This provides a simple yet effective way to effortlessly determine properties of a metasurface scattering response, such as chirality or asymmetric transmission, and which of its effective material parameters should be taken into account in the prospect of a homogenization procedure. In contrast to existing techniques, this approach does not require any a priori knowledge of group theory or complicated numerical simulation schemes, hence making it fast, easy…
We derive expressions for the scattering, extinction and conversion of the chirality of monochromatic light scattered by bodies which are characterized by a T-matrix. In analogy to the conditions obtained from the conservation of energy, these quantities enable the classification of arbitrary scattering objects due to their full, i.e. either chiral or achiral, electromagnetic response. To this end, we put forward and determine the concepts of duality and breaking of duality symmetry, anti-duality, helicity variation, helicity annhiliation and the breaking of helicity annihilation. Different cl…
We have derived a dispersion relation governing the surface plasmon resonance established along a planar interface between a metal and a chiral medium (chiral case). Resulting numerical solutions are compared with the well-known results obtained for a metal-dielectric interface (achiral case). Comparisons show that the chiral case exhibits smaller phase speeds than the achiral case. Such a longitudinal deceleration in the chiral case is caused by the energy expended on establishing the longitudinal spin density, which turns out anti-symmetric with respect to medium chirality. Moreover, the low…
We predict a strong-field ultrafast optical Faraday effect, where a circularly polarized ultrashort optical pulse induces transient chirality in an achiral transparent dielectric. This effect is attractive for time-resolved measurements because it gives access to the non-instantaneity of the nonlinear medium response, and also because it represents relaxation of time-reversal symmetry by all-optical means. We propose probing the induced transient chirality with a weak linearly polarized ultraviolet pulse that is shorter than the near-infrared pump pulse. The predicted effects are ultrafast: th…
Molecular chirality plays a crucial role in innumerable biological processes. The chirality of a molecule can typically be identified by its characteristic optical response, the circular dichroism (CD). CD signals have thus long been used to identify the state of molecules or to follow dynamic protein configurations. In recent years, the focus has moved towards plasmonic nanostructures, as they show potential for applications ranging from pathogen sensing to novel optical materials. The plasmonic coupling of the individual elements of such chiral metallic structures is a crucial prerequisite t…
The realization of lossless metasurfaces with true chirality crucially requires the fabrication of three-dimensional structures, constraining their feasibility for experiments and hampering practical implementations. Even though the three-dimensional assembly of metallic nanostructures has been demonstrated previously, the resulting plasmonic resonances suffer from high intrinsic and radiative losses. The concept of photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) is instrumental for tailoring radiative losses in diverse geometries, especially when implemented using lossless dielectrics, but appl…

We present a comprehensive review of recent developments in the field of chiral plasmonics. Significant advances have been made recently in understanding the working principles of chiral plasmonic structures. With advances in micro- and nanofabrication techniques, a variety of chiral plasmonic nanostructures have been experimentally realized; these tailored chiroptical properties vastly outperform those of their molecular counterparts. We focus on chiral plasmonic nanostructures created using bottom-up approaches, which not only allow for rational design and fabrication but most intriguingly i…
