Optical beams with a new and distinctive type of helicity have become the subject of much recent interest. While circularly polarised light comprises photons with spin angular momentum, these optically engineered 'twisted beams' (optical vortices) are endowed with orbital angular momentum. Here, the wave- front surface of the electromagnetic fields assumes helical form. To date, optical vortices have generally been studied only in their interactions with achiral matter. This study assesses what new features, if any, can be expected when such beams are used to interrogate a chiral system.
Chiral microlasers with orbital angular momenta are promising platforms for developing integrated high-dimensional photonic devices. However, it's still challenging to arbitrarily manipulate the degree of chirality and quantum numbers of OAM. Herein, we proposed and demonstrated OAM generations with tunable degree of chirality and large quantum numbers from microlasers. Through the design of an optical microcavity with uneven potential distribution for photons, the dissymmetry factor of OAM laser can be continuously tuned from -1 to +1 by governing the pump position. High-order vortices were a…
We demonstrate that nanostructures carefully designed on both sides of a thin suspended metallic membrane couple light into a chiral near field and transmit vortex beams through a central aperture that connects the two sides of the membrane. We show how far-field orbital angular momentum (OAM) indices can be tailored through nanostructure designs. We reveal the crucial importance of OAM selection rules imposed by the central aperture and derive OAM summation rules in perfect agreement with experimental data.
We propose a framework that connects the spatial symmetries of a metasurface to its material parameter tensors and its scattering matrix. This provides a simple yet effective way to effortlessly determine properties of a metasurface scattering response, such as chirality or asymmetric transmission, and which of its effective material parameters should be taken into account in the prospect of a homogenization procedure. In contrast to existing techniques, this approach does not require any a priori knowledge of group theory or complicated numerical simulation schemes, hence making it fast, easy…
This paper develops, in precise quantum electrodynamic terms, photonic attributes of the "optical chirality density", one of several measures long known to be conserved quantities for a vacuum electromagnetic field. The analysis lends insights into some recent interpretations of chiroptical experiments, in which this measure, and an associated chirality flux, have been treated as representing physically distinctive "superchiral" phenomena. In the fully quantized formalism the chirality density is promoted to operator status, whose exploration with reference to an arbitrary polarization basis r…
We report observation of electron helical dichroism on a material with chiral structure. In analogy with circular dichroism, a common technique for molecular structural fingerprinting, we use a nanofabricated forked diffraction grating to prepare electron vortex beams with opposite orbital angular momenta incident upon metal nanoparticle clusters and post-select for a zero-orbital angular momentum final state. We observe a difference in the differential scattering probability for orbital angular momentum transfer from vortices with opposite handedness incident on chiral aluminum nanoparticle c…
Chirality is ubiquitous from microscopic to macroscopic phenomena in physics and biology, such as fermionic interactions and DNA duplication. In photonics, chirality has traditionally represented differentiated optical responses for right and left circular polarizations. This definition of optical chirality in the polarization domain includes handedness-dependent phase velocities or optical absorption inside chiral media, which enable polarimetry for measuring the material concentration and circular dichroism spectroscopy for sensing biological or chemical enantiomers. Recently, the emerging f…
Major advances in X-ray sources including the development of circularly polarized and orbital angular momentum pulses make it possible to probe matter chirality at unprecedented energy regimes and with Angström and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolutions. We survey the theory of stationary and time-resolved nonlinear chiral measurements that can be carried out in the X-ray regime using tabletop X-ray sources or large scale (XFEL, synchrotron) facilities. A variety of possible signals and their information content are surveyed.
Chirality is a structural property of molecules lacking mirror symmetry that has strong implications in diverse fields, ranging from life to materials sciences. Established spectroscopic methods that are sensitive to chirality, such as circular dichroism (CD), exhibit weak signal contributions on an achiral background. Helical dichroism (HD), which is based on the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, offers a new approach to probe molecular chirality, but it has never been demonstrated on disordered samples. Furthermore, in the optical domain the challenge lies in the need to transfer the …
Recently, Tang and Cohen (Science 332, 333, 2011) have demonstrated a scheme to enhance the chiral response of molecules, which relies on the use of circularly polarized light in a standing wave configuration. Here we show a new type of light which possesses orbital angular momentum and enhanced chiral response. Unexpectedly, in the locations where the beams show enhanced optical chirality, only the longitudinal components of the electric and magnetic fields survive, showing a new way to yield optical chirality different from the usual.

We derived an analytical formula for the optical force acting on a small anisotropic chiral particle. The behavior of chiral particles is qualitatively different from achiral particles due to new chirality dependent terms which couple mechanical linear momentum and optical spin angular momentum. Such coupling induced by chirality can serve as a new mechanism to achieve optical pulling force. Our analytical predictions are verified by numerical simulations.
We examine the recently introduced measure of chirality of a monochromatic optical field [Y. Tang and A. E. Cohen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 163901 (2010)] using the momentum (plane-wave) representation and helicity basis. Our analysis clarifies the physical meaning of the measure of chirality and unveils its close relation to the polarization helicity, spin angular momentum, energy density, and Poynting energy flow. We derive the operators of the optical chirality and of the corresponding chiral momentum, which acquire remarkably simple forms in the helicity representation.
The transverse component of the spin angular momentum of evanescent waves gives rise to lateral optical forces on chiral particles, which have the unusual property of acting in a direction in which there is neither a field gradient nor wave propagation. As their direction and strength depends on the chiral polarizability of the particle, they act as chirality-sorting and may offer a mechanism for passive chirality spectroscopy. The absolute strength of the forces also substantially exceeds that of other recently predicted sideways optical forces, such that they may more readily offer an experi…
Pseudospin plays a very important role in understanding various interesting physical phenomena associated with 2D materials such as graphene. It has been proposed that pseudospin is directly related to angular momentum, and it was recently experimentally demonstrated that orbit angular momentum is an intrinsic property of pseudospin in a photonic honeycomb lattice. However, in photonics, the interaction between spin and pseudospin for light has never been investigated. In this Letter, we propose that, in an optical analogue of staggered graphene, i.e. a photonic honeycomb lattice waveguide wit…
Several dynamical properties such as energy, momentum, angular momentum, and optical helicity have been recently reexamined in dispersive and lossless media. Here, we address a parallel derivation for the optical chirality, extending it so as to include dissipative effects as well. To this end, we first elaborate on the most complete form of the conservation law for the optical chirality, without any restrictions on the nature of the medium. As a result we find a general expression for the optical chirality density both in lossless and lossy dispersive media. Our definition is perfectly consis…

Electron vortex beams have been predicted to enable atomic scale magnetic information measurement, via transfer of orbital angular momentum. Research so far has focussed on developing production techniques and applications of these beams. However, methods to measure the outgoing orbital angular momentum distribution are also a crucial requirement towards this goal. Here, we use a method to obtain the orbital angular momentum decomposition of an electron beam, using a multi-pinhole interferometer. We demonstrate both its ability to accurately measure orbital angular momentum distribution, and i…
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by helical light beams is an unbounded degree of freedom of photons that offers a promising playground in modern photonics. So far, integrated sources of coherent light carrying OAM are based on resonators whose design imposes a single, non-tailorable chirality of the wavefront (i.e. clockwise or counter clockwise vortices). Here, we propose and demonstrate the realization of an integrated microlaser where the chirality of the wavefront can be optically controlled. Importantly, the scheme that we use, based on an effective spin-orbit coupling of photons i…
Circular dichroism (CD) induced by spin angular momentum of light is vital to investigate the chirality of microscopic objects such as molecules, proteins and metamaterials. However, orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light failed to directly implement an interaction with chiral molecules, which remains poorly understood. Even with the enhancement of unique plasmonic nanoparticle aggregates, the helical dichroism (HD) is still at a small level of ~0.6%. Here, we experimentally report the direct observation of a giant HD at the level of ~120% by matching the scales of chiral microstructures and …
We present a scheme to measure the orbital angular momentum spectrum of light using a precisely timed optical loop and quantum non-demolition measurements. We also discuss the influence of imperfect optical components.
The interplay between spin and orbital angular momentum in the up-conversion process allows us to control the macroscopic wave front of high harmonics by manipulating the microscopic polarizations of the driving field. We demonstrate control of orbital angular momentum in high harmonic generation from both solid and gas phase targets using the selection rules of spin angular momentum. The gas phase harmonics extend the control of angular momentum to extreme-ultraviolet wavelength. We also propose a bi-color scheme to produce spectrally separated extreme-ultraviolet radiation carrying orbital a…
Light intensity control of the orbital angular momentum of the fundamental beam in a quadratic nonlinear process is theoretically and numerically presented. In particular we analyzed a seeded second harmonic generation process in presence of orbital angular momentum of the interacting beams due both to on axis and off axis optical vortices. Examples are proposed and discussed.
We investigate the dynamical properties of a type-II optical parametric oscillator pumped by a structured light beam carrying orbital angular momentum. Different dynamical regimes are theoretically derived and experimentally demonstrated, depending on the anisotropy effects imposed by the nonlinear medium. In a weakly anisotropic regime, fine-tuning of the orbital angular momentum transfer is obtained by adjusting the crystal parameters. Under strong anisotropy, orbital angular momentum transfer is not possible and a sharp dynamical behavior is observed, with abrupt switching between different…
The magnitude of the topological charge of the vortex of a ring-shaped pulse is found to be limited by the squared mean frequency of the pulse spectrum at the ring relative to its variance. This limitation implies a upper bound to the orbital angular momentum carried by a pulse, and a lower bound to the duration for a pulse to carry any orbital angular momentum.
We implement an interferometric method using two angular slits to measure the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode spectrum of a partially coherent field. As the angular separation of the slits changes, an interference pattern for a particular OAM mode is obtained. The visibility of this interference pattern as a function of angular separation is equivalent to the angular correlation function of the field. By Fourier transforming the angular correlation function obtained from the double angular slit interference, we are able to calculate the OAM spectrum of the partially coherent field. This me…
Many methods now exist to prepare free electrons into orbital angular momentum states, and the predicted applications of these electron states as probes of materials and scattering processes are numerous. The development of electron orbital angular momentum measurement techniques has lagged behind. We show that coupling between electron orbital angular momentum and a spatially varying magnetic field produces an angular momentum-dependent focusing effect. We propose a design for an orbital angular momentum measurement device built on this principle. As the method of measurement is non-interfero…
In this letter a general method for expanding paraxial beams into multipolar electromagnetic fields is presented. This method is applied to the expansion of paraxial modes with orbital angular momentum (OAM), showing how the paraxial OAM is related to the general angular momentum of an electromagnetic wave. This method can be extended to quasi-paraxial beams, i.e. highly focused laser beams. Some applications to the control of electronic transitions in atoms are discussed.
Optical chirality (OC) - one of the fundamental quantities of electromagnetic fields - corresponds to the instantaneous chirality of light. It has been utilized for exploring chiral light-matter interactions in linear optics, but has not yet been applied to nonlinear processes. Motivated to explore the role of OC in the generation of helically polarized high-order harmonics and attosecond pulses, we first separate the OC of transversal and paraxial beams to polarization and orbital terms. We find that the polarization-associated OC of attosecond pulses corresponds to that of the pump in the qu…
We demonstrate the Fourier relationship between angular position and angular momentum for a light mode. In particular we measure the distribution of orbital angular momentum states of light that has passed through an aperture and verify that the orbital angular momentum distribution is given by the complex Fourier-transform of the aperture function. We use spatial light modulators, configured as diffractive optical components, to define the initial orbital angular momentum state of the beam, set the defining aperture, and measure the angular momentum spread of the resulting beam. These measure…
Recent experiments in orbital angular momentum multiplexing have demonstrated its potential for improving the link capacity in optical interconnection networks. Meanwhile, compact photonic integrated orbital angular momentum (de-)multiplexing devices are needed to address requirements such as high scalability, fast configurability, low cost and low power consumption. Here we report on a large-scale integrated tunable orbital angular momentum mode multiplexer, which supports up to 20 multiplexed orbital angular momentum modes over 16 wavelength channels with 30 GHz channel spacing. A testbed of…
It is shown that the photon picture of the electromagnetic field enables one to determine unambiguously the splitting of the total angular momentum of the electromagnetic field into the orbital part and the spin part.
We present generalized expressions to calculate the orbital angular momentum for invariant beams using scalars potentials. The solutions can be separated into transversal electric TE, transversal magnetic TM and transversal electromagnetic TE/TM polarization modes. We show that the superposition of non-paraxial vectorial beams with axial symmetry can provide a well defined orbital angular momentum and that the modes superposition affects the angular momentum flux density. The results are illustrated and analyzed for Bessel beams.
It is shown that the momentum density of free electromagnetic field splits into two parts. One has no contribution to the net momentum due to the transversality condition. The other yields all the momentum. The angular momentum that is associated with the former part is spin, and the angular momentum that is associated with the latter part is orbital angular momentum. Expressions for the spin and orbital angular momentum are given in terms of the electric vector in reciprocal space. The spin and orbital angular momentum defined this way are used to investigate the angular momentum of nonparaxi…
We present a quantum mechanical analysis of the orbital angular momentum of a class of recently discovered elliptically-symmetric stable light fields --- the so-called Ince-Gauss modes. We study, in a fully quantum formalism, how the orbital angular momentum of these beams varies with their ellipticity and discover several compelling features, including: non-monotonic behavior, stable beams with real continuous (non-integer) orbital angular momenta, and orthogonal modes with the same orbital angular momenta. We explore, and explain in detail, the reasons for this behavior. These features may h…
We propose to use an acoustic surface wave as a memory for a photon carrying orbital angular momentum. We clarify the physical mechanism that enables the transfer of information, derive the angular momentum selection rule that must be obeyed in the process, and show how to optimize the optoacoustic coupling. We theoretically demonstrate that high fidelities can be achieved, using realistic parameters, for the transfer of a coherent optical Laguerre-Gaussian state, associated with large angular momentum, to a mechanical shear mode. Our results add a significant possibility to the ongoing effort…
From the viewpoint of classical electrodynamics, we identify the role of spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion in spin Hall effect of light (SHE). We introduce a distinct separation between spin and orbital angular momenta to clarify the spin-orbital interaction in the SHE of light. We demonstrate that the refractive index gradient can enhance or suppress the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, and thus can control the SHE of light in conventional beam refraction. We suggest that the metamaterial whose refractive index can be tailored arbitrarily may become a good candidate for …
The expression for the total angular momentum carried by a laser optical vortex beam, splits, in the paraxial approximation, into two terms which seem to represent orbital and spin angular momentum respectively. There are, however, two very different competing versions of the formula for the spin angular momentum, one based on the use of the Poynting vector, as in classical electrodynamics, the other related to the canonical expression for the angular momentum which occurs in Quantum Electrodynamic. I analyze the possibility that a sufficiently sensitive optical measurement could decide which …
We present an optomechanical device designed to allow optical transduction of orbital angular momentum of light. An optically induced twist imparted on the device by light is detected using an integrated cavity optomechanical system based on a nanobeam slot-mode photonic crystal cavity. This device could allow measurement of the orbital angular momentum of light when photons are absorbed by the mechanical element, or detection of the presence of photons when they are scattered into new orbital angular momentum states by a sub-wavelength grating patterned on the device. Such a system allows det…
Magnetostatic modes supported by a ferromagnetic sphere have been known as the Walker modes, each of which possesses an orbital angular momentum as well as a spin angular momentum along a static magnetic field. The Walker modes with non-zero orbital angular momenta exhibit topologically non-trivial spin textures, which we call \textit{magnetic quasi-vortices}. Photons in optical whispering gallery modes supported by a dielectric sphere possess orbital and spin angular momenta forming \textit{optical vortices}. Within a ferromagnetic, as well as dielectric, sphere, two forms of vortices interac…
