Ionic liquids (IL) are promising electrolytes for electrochemical applications due to their remarkable stability and high charge density. Molecular dynamics simulations are essential for better understanding the complex phenomena occurring at the electrode-IL interface. In this work, we have studied the interface between graphene and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate IL, using density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations at variable surface charge densities. We have disassembled the electrical double layer potential drop into two main components: one involving atomic charges and the other - dipoles. The latter component arises due to the electronic polarisation of the surface and is related to concepts hotly debated in the literature, such as the Thomas-Fermi screening length, effective surface charge plane, and quantum capacitance.
One prominent structural feature of ionic liquids near surfaces is formation of alternating layers of anions and cations. However, how this layering responds to applied potential is poorly understood. We focus on the structure of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate (BMPY-FAP) near the surface of a strontium titanate (SrTiO$_3$) electric double-layer transistor. Using x-ray reflectivity, we show that at positive bias, the individual layers in the ionic liquid double layer thicken and the layering persists further away from the interface. We model the reflecti…
We have been examining factors determining the accuracy of cluster expansion (CE), which is used in combination with many density functional theory (DFT) calculations. With the exception of multicomponent metallic or isovalent ionic systems, the contributions of long-range effective cluster interactions (ECIs) to configurational energetics are not negligible, which is ascribed to long-range electrostatic interactions. The truncation of ECIs in such systems leads to systematic errors. A typical problem with such errors can be seen in Monte Carlo (MC) simulations since simulation supercells comp…
Voltage modulation of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with compactness, high speed response, energy efficiency and both practical/theoretical siginificances can be widely applied to various YIG based spintronics such as spin Hall, spin pumping, spin Seeback effects. Here we initial an ionic modulation of interfacial magnetism process on YIG/Pt bilayer heterostructures, where the Pt capping would influence the ferromagnetic (FMR) field position significantly, and realize a significant magnetism enhancement in bilayer system. A large voltage induced FMR field shifts of 690 Oe has been achieved in YIG …

In metal/oxide heterostructures, rich chemical, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties can emerge from interfacial chemistry and structure. The possibility to dynamically control interface characteristics with an electric field paves the way towards voltage control of these properties in solid-state devices. Here we show that electrical switching of the interfacial oxidation state allows for voltage control of magnetic properties to an extent never before achieved through conventional magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We directly observe, for the first time, in situ voltage driven O…
We report measurements of the normal surface forces and friction forces between two mica surfaces separated by a nano-film of dicationic ionic liquid using a Surface Force Balance. The dicationic ionic liquid 1,10-bis(3-methylimidazolium)decane di- [bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)]imide forms a layered structure in nano-confinement, revealed by oscillatory structural forces. Friction measurements performed at different film thicknesses display quantized friction, i.e. discontinuities in friction as layers are squeezed out and friction coefficients dependent on the number of liquid layers confined…
Turning Insulators into Accelerators: Deciphering the Interfacial Conductivity Boost in ZrO2-Li2ZrCl6 Composites through Machine Learning Molecular Dynamics Simulations
The argyrodite sulfides are getting more and more attractive as highly promising solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for high-performance all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), owing to their high ionic conductivity, adequate plasticity, and decent mechanical strength. However, their poor incompatibility with Li metal anode and high voltage cathodes and as well as serious sensitivity to air significantly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we have devised an effective strategy to overcome these challenging shortcomings through modification of chalcogen chemistry under the guidance of theoreti…
Solid state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for total control of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films via a chemically-driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete supp…
Interfacial adhesion between graphene and a SiO2 substrate is studied by density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion corrections. The results demonstrate the van der Waals (vdW) interaction as the predominate mechanism for the graphene/SiO2 interface. It is found that the interaction strength is strongly influenced by changes of the SiO2 surface structures due to surface reactions with water. The adhesion energy is reduced when the reconstructed SiO2 surface is hydroxylated, and further reduced when covered by a monolayer of adsorbed water molecules. Thus, the effect of humidity may help e…

This article reviews a method for calculating an equilibrium interfacial phase diagram depicting regions of stability for different interface structures as function of temperature and chemical potentials. Density functional theory (DFT) is used for interfacial energies, Monte Carlo simulations together with cluster expansions based on DFT results for obtaining configurational free energies, and CALPHAD-type modeling for describing the thermodynamic properties of the adjoining bulk phases. An explicit case, vanadium doped cemented carbides, is chosen to illustrate the progress in the research f…

Interactions between negatively charged aluminosilicate species and positively charged metal cations are critical to many important engineering processes and applications, including sustainable cements and aluminosilicate glasses. In an effort to probe these interactions, here we have calculated the pair-wise interaction energies (i.e., binding energies) between aluminosilicate dimer/trimer and 17 different metal cations using a density functional theory (DFT) approach. Analysis of the DFT-optimized structural representations for the clusters (dimer/trimer + cation) shows that their structural…
We investigate the effect of spatial doping of the Mott insulator LaVO$_3$ by inserting a few layers of the correlated metal SrVO$_3$ in multilayer geometries. Using density functional theory in combination with dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate that this leads to a geometrically confined and robust metallic layer that stabilizes the metallicity in SrVO$_3$ even in the ultrathin layer limit, suppressing a potential dimensionality-induced metal-insulator transition. For a thicker SrVO$_3$ layer, we find a continuous transition of both structural and electronic properties across the in…
Inhomogeneity of ion correlation widely exists in many physicochemical, soft matter, and biological systems. Here, we apply the modified Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory to study the classic example of the vapor-liquid interface of ionic fluids. The ion correlation is decomposed into a short-range contribution associated with the local electrostatic environment and a long-range contribution accounting for the spatially varying ionic strength and dielectric permittivity. For symmetric salt, both the coexistence curve and the interfacial tension predicted by our theory are in quantitativ…
Recent experiments (F.H.J. Van Der Heyden et al., PRL 96, 224502 (2006)) of streaming currents in silica nanochannels with divalent ions report charge inversion, i.e. interfacial charges attracting counterions in excess of their own nominal charge, in conflict with existing theoretical and simulation results. We reveal the mechanism of charge inversion by using all-atomic molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show excellent agreement with experiments, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We further discuss the implications of our study for the general problem of ionic correlations in s…

We introduce a method to carry out zero-temperature calculations within density functional theory (DFT) but without relying on the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation for the ionic motion. Our approach is based on the finite-temperature many-body path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics by taking the zero-temperature limit and treating the imaginary-time propagation of the electronic variables in the context of DFT. This goes beyond the familiar BO approximation and is limited from being an exact treatment of both electrons and ions only by the approximations involved in the DFT componen…
The interfacial structure of SrZr$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$O$_3$ films grown on semiconducting Ge substrates are investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles density functional theory. By systematically tuning Zr content x, the effects of bonding at the interface and epitaxial strain on the physical structure of the film can be distinguished. The interfacial perovskite layers are found to be polarized as a result of cation-anion ionic displacements perpendicular to the perovskite/semiconductor interface. We find a correlation between the observed buckling and valence band offsets a…

Ionic migration has been proposed as a possible cause of photovoltaic current-voltage hysteresis in hybrid perovskite solar cells. However, a major objection to this hypothesis is that hysteresis can be reduced by changing the interfacial contact materials, which are unlikely to significantly influence the behaviour of ionic defects within the perovskite phase. Here we use transient optoelectronic measurements, combined with device simulations, to show that the primary effects of ionic migration can in fact be observed both in devices with hysteresis, and with hysteresis free type contact mate…
Linear scaling methods for density-functional theory (DFT) simulations are formulated in terms of localised orbitals in real-space, rather than the delocalised eigenstates of conventional approaches. In local-orbital methods, relative to conventional DFT, desirable properties can be lost to some extent, such as the translational invariance of the total energy of a system with respect to small displacements and the smoothness of the potential energy surface. This has repercussions for calculating accurate ionic forces and geometries. In this work we present results from \textsc{onetep}, our lin…
Key technologies in energy conversion and storage, sensing and chemical synthesis rely on a detailed knowledge about charge transfer processes at electrified solid-liquid interfaces. However, these interfaces continuously evolve as a function of applied potentials, ionic concentrations and time. We therefore need to characterize chemical composition, atomic arrangement and electronic structure of both the liquid and the solid side of the interface under operating conditions. In this chapter, we discuss the state-of-the-art X-ray based spectroscopy and diffraction approaches for such 'operando'…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to explore the impact of a non-ionic solvent on the structural and capacitive properties of supercapacitors based on an ionic liquid electrolyte and carbon electrodes. The study is focused on two pure ionic liquids, namely 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and their 1.5 M solutions in acetonitrile. The electrolytes, represented by coarse-grained models, are enclosed between graphite electrodes. We employ a constant potential methodology which allows us to gain insight into the influence of so…
Using ab-initio calculations within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), atomic structures and electronic properties of MoS2/HfO2 interface are investigated. The impact of interfacial oxygen concentration on the MoS2/HfO2 interface electronic structure is examined in order to mimic the atomic layer deposition growth at ambient conditions. Then, the effect on band offsets and the thermodynamic stability of those interfaces is investigated and compared with available relevant experimental data. These results seem to indicate that, for a well-prepared interface, the electronic device…
DFT calculations within the generalized Bloch theorem approach show that interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) at both interfaces of Graphene/Co$_n$/Pt(111) multilayer heterostructures are decoupled for $n \geq 3$. Unlike the property of magnetocrystalline anisotropy for this system, DMI is not affected by stacking defects in the Co layer. The effect of Graphene (Gr) is to invert the chirality of the vaccum/Co interfacial DMI, overall reducing the DMI of the heterostructure, which is nevertheless dominated by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of Pt. A spectral analysis in the…
Surface enhanced Raman spectra of Phenylalanine (Phe) in Ag colloidal solution have been recorded for Phe solutions of different pH. Spectral line-shape analyses of the enhanced modes, at 1005, 1380 and 1582 cm-1, between pH 4.5 and 10.5, have been carried out. The variation of spectral line-width with pH reveals two possible mechanisms in solution: (i) the fluctuation of pH in microscopic volume in an overall uniform pH solution and/or (ii) the motional narrowing caused by the intermolecular ionic interaction. We suggest that different charge states of the reference molecule are responsible f…
Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of electrode material properties in high energy density storage devices like lithium batteries have been standard practice for decades. In contrast, DFT modelling of explicit interfaces in batteries arguably lacks universally adopted methodology and needs further conceptual development. In this paper, we focus on solid-solid interfaces, which are ubiquitous not just in all-solid state batteries; liquid-electrolyte-based batteries often rely on thin, solid passivating films on electrode surfaces to function. We use metal anode calculations to illustr…
Room temperature ionic liquids play an important role in many technological applications and a detailed understanding of their frontier molecular orbitals is required to optimize interfacial barriers, reactivity and stability with respect to electron injection and removal. In this work, we calculate quasiparticle energy levels of ionic liquids using first-principles many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation and compare our results to various mean-field approaches, including semilocal and hybrid density-functional theory and Hartree-Fock. We find that the mean-field results depe…
A commercially available membrane filter paper composed of mixed cellulose esters bearing typically an interconnected pore structure was transformed into a stimuli-responsive bilayer actuator by depositing a thin film of poly(ionic liquid)-modified graphene oxide sheets (GO-PIL) onto the filter paper. In acetone vapor, the as-synthesized bilayer actuator bent readily into multiple loops at a fast speed with the GO-PIL top film inwards. Upon pulling back into air the actuator recovered their original shape. The asymmetric swelling of the top GO-PIL film and the bottom porous filter paper toward…
Multilayered heterostructures of Ce0.85Sm0.15O2-delta and Y0.16Zr0.92O2-delta of a high crystallographic quality were fabricated on (001) - oriented MgO single crystal substrates. Keeping the total thickness of the heterostructures constant, the number of ceria-zirconia bilayers was increased while reducing the thickness of each layer. At each interface Ce was found primarily in the reduced, 3+ oxidation state in a layer extending about 2 nm from the interface. Concurrently, the conductivity decreased as the thickness of the layers was reduced suggesting a progressive confinement of the charge…
Alloying of In/Zn oxides with various X atoms stabilizes the IXZO structures but generates electron traps in the compounds, degrading the electron mobility. To assess whether the latter is linked to the oxygen affinity or the ionic radius, of the X element, several IXZO samples are synthesized by the sol-gel process, with a large number (14) of X elements. The IXZOs are characterized by XPS, SIMS, DRX, and UV-spectroscopy and used for fabricating thin film transistors. Channel mobility and the interface defect density NST, extracted from the TFT electrical characteristics and low frequency noi…
First-principles calculations of work function tuning induced by different chemical terminations on Si(100) surface are presented and discussed. We find that the presence of halogen atoms (I, Br, Cl, and F) leads to an increase of the work function if compared to the fully hydrogenated surface. This is a quite general effect and is directly linked to the chemisorbed atoms electronegativity as well as to the charge redistribution at the interface. All these results are examined with respect to previous theoretical works and experimental data obtained for the (100) as well as other Si surface or…
The interfacial screening charge that arises to compensate electric fields of dielectric or ferroelectric thin films is now recognized as the most important factor in determining the capacitance or polarization of ultrathin ferroelectrics. Here we investigate using aberration-corrected electron microscopy and density functional theory how interfaces cope with the need to terminate ferroelectric polarization. In one case, we show evidence for ionic screening, which has been predicted by theory but never observed. For a ferroelectric film on an insulating substrate, we found that compensation ca…
A central goal of modern materials physics and nanoscience is control of materials and their interfaces to atomic dimensions. For interfaces between polar and non-polar layers, this goal is thwarted by a polar catastrophe that forces an interfacial reconstruction. In traditional semiconductors this reconstruction is achieved by an atomic disordering and stoichiometry change at the interface, but in multivalent oxides a new option is available: if the electrons can move, the atoms don`t have to. Using atomic-scale electron energy loss spectroscopy we find that there is a fundamental asymmetry b…
In this paper, we have presented the density functional theory (DFT) based calculations performed within the first-principles pseudopotential method to investigate the physical properties of the newly discovered superconductor LaRu2As2 for the first time. The optimized structural parameters are in good agreement with the experimental results. The calculated independent elastic constants ensure mechanical stability of the compound. The calculated Cauchy pressure, Pugh's ratio as well as Poisson's ratio indicate that LaRu2As2 should behave as a ductile material. Due to low Debye temperature, LaR…
Electronic level alignment at the interface between an adsorbed molecular layer and a semiconducting substrate determines the activity and efficiency of many photocatalytic materials. Standard density functional theory (DFT) based methods have proven unable to provide a quantitative description of this level alignment. This requires a proper treatment of the anisotropic screening, necessitating the use of quasiparticle (QP) techniques. However, the computational complexity of QP algorithms has meant a quantitative description of interfacial levels has remained elusive. We provide a systematic …
The standard model of enhanced ionic conductivities in solid electrolyte heterostructures follows from a continuum mean-field description of defect distributions that makes no reference to crystalline structure. To examine ionic transport and defect distributions while explicitly accounting for ion-ion correlations and lattice effects, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations of a model coherent fluorite heterostructure without any extrinsic defects, with a difference in standard chemical potentials of mobile fluoride ions between phases induced by an external potential. Increasing the…
Ionic solutions are often regarded as fully dissociated ions dispersed in a polar solvent. While this picture holds for dilute solutions, at higher ionic concentrations, oppositely charged ions can associate into dimers, referred to as Bjerrum pairs. We consider the formation of such pairs within the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann framework, and investigate their effects on bulk and interfacial properties of electrolytes. Our findings show that pairs can reduce the magnitude of the dielectric decrement of ionic solutions as the ionic concentration increases. We describe the effect of pairs on the…
The electron spin g- and hyperfine tensors of the endohedral metallofullerene Sc@C82 are anisotropic. Using electron spin resonance (ESR) and density functional theory (DFT), we can relate their principal axes to the coordinate frame of the molecule, finding that the g-tensor is not axially symmetric. The Sc bond with the cage is partly covalent and partly ionic. Most of the electron spin density is distributed around the carbon cage, but 5% is associated with the scandium d_yz orbital, and this drives the observed anisotropy.
Scalar-relativistic DFT-GGA has been used to study adsorption of water in molecular and dissociative configurations on delta-Plutonium (111) surface. In molecular state, water is physisorbed in an almost flat-lying orientation at a one-fold coordinated on-top site. The interaction of the water 1b1 orbital and the Pu-6d orbital provides the stability of water on the surface, implying that the Pu-5f electrons remain chemically inert. The co-adsorption cases of partially dissociated and fully dissociated products at the three-fold hollow sites yield chemisorption, coupled with rumpling of the sur…
