Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) stand out with their high chemical stability and the possibility to incorporate a wide range of magnetic species between the layers. The behavior of conduction electrons in such materials intercalated by 3d-elements is closely related to their magnetic properties and can be sensitively controlled by external magnetic fields. Here, we study the magnetotransport properties of NbS$_2$ intercalated with Mn, Mn$_{1/4}$NbS$_2$, demonstrating a complex behavior of the magnetoresistance and of the ordinary and anomalous Hall resistivities. Application of pressure as tuning parameter leads to the drastic changes of the magnetotransport properties of Mn$_{1/4}$NbS$_2$ exhibiting large negative magnetoresistance up to $65 \%$ at 7.1 GPa. First-principles electronic structure calculations indicates pressure-induced transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations accounting for the finite temperature magnetic properties of Mn$_{1/4}$NbS$_2$ suggest a field-induced metamagnetic ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition as an origin of the large negative magentoresistance. These results inspire the development of materials for spintronic applications based on intercalated TMDC with a well controllable metamagnetic transition.
The structural and magnetic properties of Y1-xErxFe2 intermetallic compounds and their hydrides and deuterides Y1-xErxFe2H(D)4.2 have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements under static and pulsed magnetic field up to 60 T. The intermetallics crystallize in the C15 cubic structure , whereas corresponding hydrides and deuterides crystallize in a monoclinic structure. All compounds display a linear decrease of the unit cell volume versus Er concentration; the hydrides have a 0.8% larger cell volume compared to the deuterides with same Er content. They are ferrimagnet…

The structural and magnetic properties of double perovskiteTb2CoMnO6 have been investigated. Electronic structure analysis by XPS study reveals the presence of mixed oxidation state (Mn4+/Mn3+ and Co2+/Co3+) of B-site ions. The dc and ac magnetization measurements reveal different interesting phases such as Griffith phase, re-entrant spin glass, metamagnetic steps, Hopkinson like peak and also unusual slow relaxation. The M-H curve indicates the presence of competing AFM/FM interactions. The disorder in Tb2CoMnO6 leads to spin frustration at low temperature giving rise to the re-entrant spin g…
Recent experiments on the antiferromagnetic intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide $\mathrm{Fe_{1/3}NbS_2}$ have demonstrated reversible resistivity switching by application of orthogonal current pulses below its magnetic ordering temperature, making $\mathrm{Fe_{1/3}NbS_2}$ promising for spintronics applications. Here, we perform density functional theory calculations with Hubbard U corrections of the magnetic order, electronic structure, and transport properties of crystalline $\mathrm{Fe_{1/3}NbS_2}$, clarifying the origin of the different resistance states. The two experimentally pro…
We investigate the ultra-sharp jump in the isothermal magnetization and the resistivity in the polycrystalline $Sm_{0.5}(Ca_{0.5-y}Sr_{y})MnO_3$ $(y = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.5)$ compounds. The critical field $(H_{cr})$, required for the ultra-sharp jump, decreases with increase of `Sr' concentration, i.e. with increase of average A-site ionic radius $\langle r_A\rangle$. The magnetotransport data indicate that the phase separation increases with the increase of $\langle r_A\rangle$, i.e. with $y$. The dependency of $H_{cr}$ with magnetic field sweep rate reveals that the ultra-sharp jump fr…
We report on crystal structure, magnetic and thermal physical properties of EuPd$_2$Sn$_4$ stannide. From the magnetic susceptibility measurements a divalent state of Eu rare earth element was determined together with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 11 K. By applying magnetic field, the magnetic behavior variation reveals a complex magnetic structure. Above a critical field Bc a ferromagnetic (FM)-like character starts to prevail. AFM and FM regimes are separated by a metamagnetic region. Heat capacity measurements confirm this behavior.
Complex electronic states in double layered ruthenates (Sr1-xCax)3Ru2O7
The 6H-perovskites Ba$_3$RRu$_2$O$_9$ (R = rare earth element) demonstrate the magnetodielectric (MD) coupling as a manifestation of $4d - 4f$ magnetic interactions. Here, we have reported a detailed study of the structural, magnetic, heat capacity, and MD properties of the 6H-perovskite Ba$_3$GdRu$_2$O$_9$. The signature of long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering $\sim$ 14.8 K ($T_N$) is evident from the magnetization and heat capacity studies. The $T_N$ shifts towards the lower temperature side, apart from splitting in two with the application of the magnetic field. Field-dependent magne…
We perform density functional calculations to investigate the structure of the inter-metallic alloy FeRh under epitaxial strain. Bulk FeRh exhibits a metamagnetic transition from a low-temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase at 350K, and its strain dependence is of interest for tuning the transition temperature to the room-temperature operating conditions of typical memory devices. We find an unusually strong dependence of the structural energetics on the choice of exchange-correlation functional, with the usual local density approximation (LDA) yielding the wro…
Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ displays a complex magnetic phase diagram that is sensitive and tunable with both electronic and crystallographic structure changes. In order to explore this tunability, vanadium-doped (Fe$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ has been synthesized and characterized. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement show that samples up to 20\% V-doping remain isostructural to Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ and display a linear increase in unit cell volume as doping is increased. Magnetic measurements reveal a suppression of the antiferromagnetic helical spin-density wave (SDW) w…

Hexagonal La$_2$Ni$_7$ and rhombohedral Y$_2$Ni$_7$ are weak itinerant antiferromagnet (wAFM) and ferromagnet (wFM), respectively. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of $A_2B_7$ intermetallic compounds ($A$ = La, Y, $B$ = Ni) have been investigated combining X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. The La$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ni$_7$ intermetallic compounds with $0 \leq x \leq 1$ crystallize in the Ce$_{2}$Ni$_7$-type hexagonal structure with Y preferentially located in the [$AB_2$] units. The compounds with larger Y content ($1.2 \leq x < 2$) crystallize in both hexagonal and rhom…
Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) have received a lot of attention due to the existence of various quantum phenomena such as quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and topological magnetoelectric effect, etc. The intrinsic superlattice-like layered MTIs, MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n, have been extensively investigated mainly through the transport measurements, while the direct investigation of their superlattice-sensitive magnetic behaviors is relatively rare. Here, we report a microscopic real-space investigation of magnetic phase behaviors in MnBi4Te7 using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM)…
The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temperature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic …
Single crystals of $R$Cd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ ($R$ = La and Ce) have been synthesized by high temperature ternary melt and their physical properties have been explored by means of magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermoelectric power measurements. $R$Cd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ compounds indicate a (structural) phase transition at high temperatures, accompanied by a remarkable increase of the electrical resistivity with an extremely low carrier concentration. CeCd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ exhibits a large magnetic anisotropy and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_{N} = …
We investigated the anisotropic magnetic properties of CePd$_2$As$_2$ by magnetic, thermal and electrical transport studies. X-ray diffraction confirmed the tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure and the high-quality of the single crystals. Magnetisation and magnetic susceptibility data taken along the different crystallographic directions evidence a huge crystalline electric field (CEF) induced Ising-type magneto-crystalline anisotropy with a large $c$-axis moment and a small in-plane moment at low temperature. A detailed CEF analysis based on the magnetic susceptibility data indicates an a…
We investigate the structural, magnetic and spin-state transitions, and magnetocaloric properties of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) double perovskites. The structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic phase at $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6, and an evolution of (101)/(103) superlattice reflections and Raman active modes indicate the enhancement in the B-site ordering with $x$. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal the transition from weak ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering for $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6 with T$_{\rm N}$$\approx$9--15~K. Interestingly, the La substitution driv…
The compound EuCo{2-y}As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is known to contain Eu{+2} ions with spin S = 7/2 that order below a temperature TN = 47 K into an antiferromagnetic (AFM) proper helical structure with the ordered moments aligned in the tetragonal ab plane, perpendicular to the helix axis along the c axis, with no contribution from the Co atoms. Here we carry out a detailed investigation of the properties of single crystals. Enhanced ordered and effective moments of the Eu spins are found in most of our crystals. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the enhanced mome…
The Eu{+2} spins-7/2 in EuNi2As2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure order antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature TN =15 K into a helical antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the helix axis aligned along the tetragonal c axis and the Eu ordered moments aligned ferromagnetically within the ab plane as previously reported from neutron diffraction measurements [T. Jin, et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 014425 (2019)]. Here we study the crystallographic, magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of Bi-flux-grown single crystals using single-crystal x-ray diffractio…
We report on systematic temperature- and magnetic field-dependent studies of the EuGa$_4$ binary compound, which crystallizes in a centrosymmetric tetragonal BaAl$_4$-type structure with space group $I4/mmm$. The electronic properties of EuGa$_4$ single crystals, with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_\mathrm{N} \sim 16.4$ K, were characterized via electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. A giant nonsaturating magnetoresistance was observed at low temperatures, reaching $\sim 7 \times 10^4$ % at 2 K in a magnetic field of 9 T. In the AFM state, EuGa$_4$ undergoes a seri…
We present a comprehensive study of static and dynamic magnetic properties in the Ising-like dipolar antiferromagnet (AFM) DyScO$_3$\ by means of DC and AC magnetization measurements supported by classical Monte-Carlo calculations. Our AC-susceptibility data show that the magnetic dynamics exhibit a clear crossover from an Arrhenius-like regime to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at $T^* = 10$ K. Below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 3.2$ K DyScO$_3$ orders in an antiferromagnetic $GxAy$-type magnetic structure and the magnetization dynamics slow down to the minute timescale. The low-temperature mag…

Single crystals of La2Ni7 have been grown out of a binary, La-Ni melt. Temperature dependent, zero magnetic field, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and low field magnetization measurements indicate that there is a series of antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T1 = 61.0 \pm 0.2 K, T2 = 56.5 \pm 0.2 K and T3 = 42.2 \pm 0.2 K. The three specific heat anomalies found at these temperatures qualitatively have very small entropy changes associated with them and the anisotropic M(H) data saturate at ~ 0.12 μB/Ni; both observations strongly suggesting the AFM order is associated with very smal…
