Convex functions have played a major role in the field of Mathematical inequalities. In this paper, we introduce a new concept related to convexity, which proves better estimates when the function is somehow more convex than another.
In particular, we define what we called $g-$convexity as a generalization of $\log-$convexity. Then we prove that $g-$convex functions have better estimates in certain known inequalities like the Hermite-Hadard inequality, super additivity of convex functions, the Majorization inequality and some means inequalities.
Strongly related to this, we define the index of convexity as a measure of ``how much the function is convex".
Applications including Hilbert space operators, matrices and entropies will be presented in the end.
In this article, we prove an inner product inequality for Hilbert space operators. This inequality, then, is utilized to present a general numerical radius inequality using convex functions. Applications of the new results include obtaining new forms that generalize and extend some well known results in the literature, with an application to the newly defined generalized numerical radius. We emphasize that the approach followed in this article is different from the approaches used in the literature to obtain the refined versions.
In [B1, Theorem 2.36] we proved the equivalence of six conditions on a continuous function f on an interval. These conditions define a subset of the set of operator convex functions, whose elements are called strongly operator convex. Two of the six conditions involve operator-algebraic semicontinuity theory, as given by C. Akemann and G. Pedersen in [AP], and the other four conditions do not involve operator algebras at all. Two of these conditions are operator inequalities, one is a global condition on f, and the fourth is an integral representation of f stronger than the usual integral repr…
We obtain symmetrization inequalities on probability metric spaces with convex isoperimetric profile which incorporate in their formulation the isoperimetric estimator and that can be applied to provide a unified treatment of sharp Sobolev-Poincaré and Nash inequalities.
We observe that if f is a continuous function on an interval I and x_0 \in I, then f is operator monotone if and only if the function (f(x) - f(x_0)/(x - x_0) is strongly operator convex. Then starting with an operator monotone function f_0, we construct a strongly operator convex function f_1, an (ordinary) operator convex function f_2, and then a new operator monotone function f_3. The process can be continued to obtain an infinite sequence which cycles between the three classes of functions. We also describe two other constructions, similar in spirit. We prove two lemmas which enable a trea…
This paper concerns three classes of real-valued functions on intervals, operator monotone functions, operator convex functions, and strongly operator convex functions. Strongly operator convex functions were previously treated in [3] and [4], where operator algebraic semicontinuity theory or operator theory were substantially used. In this paper we provide an alternate treatment that uses only operator inequalities (or even just matrix inequalities). We also show that if t_0 is a point in the domain of a continuous function f, then f is operator monotone if and only if (f(t) - f(t_0))/(t - t_…
We show that if $X$ is a Banach space whose dual $X^{*}$ has an equivalent locally uniformly rotund (LUR) norm, then for every open convex $U\subseteq X$, for every $\varepsilon >0$, and for every continuous and convex function $f:U \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ (not necessarily bounded on bounded sets) there exists a convex function $g:X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ of class $C^1(U)$ such that $f-\varepsilon\leq g\leq f$ on $U.$ We also show how the problem of global approximation of continuous (not necessarily bounded on bounded sets) and convex functions by $C^k$ smooth convex functions can be reduced…
We present a characterization of operator log-convex functions by using positive linear mappings. Moreover, we study the non-commutative f-divergence functional of operator log-convex functions. In particular, we prove that f is operator log-convex if and only if the non-commutative f-divergence functional is operator log-convex in its first variable and operator convex in its second variable.
We quickly review and make some comments on the concept of convexity in metric spaces due to Takahashi. Then we introduce a concept of convex structure based convexity to functions on these spaces and refer to it as $W-$convexity. $W-$convex functions generalize convex functions on linear spaces. We discuss illustrative examples of (strict) $ W-$convex functions and dedicate the major part of this paper to proving a variety of properties that make them fit in very well with the classical theory of convex analysis. Finally, we apply some of our results to the metric projection problem and fixed…
In this paper, we established some new Hadamard-type integral inequalities for functions whose derivatives of absolute values are m-convex and (α,m)-convex functions via Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals.
We investigate how the type of Convexity of the Core function affects the Csiszár $f$-divergence functional. A general treatment for the type of convexity has been considered and the associated perspective functions have been studied. In particular, it has been shown that when the core function is \rm{MN}-convex, then the associated perspective function is jointly \rm{MN}-convex if the two scalar mean \rm{M} and \rm{N} are the same. In the case where $\mathrm{M}\neq\mathrm{N}$, we study the type of convexity of the perspective function. As an application, we prove that the \textit{Hellinger di…
We study the class of compact convex subsets of a topological vector space which admits a strictly convex and lower semicontinuous function. We prove that such a compact set is embeddable in a strictly convex dual Banach space endowed with its weak$^*$ topology. In addition, we find exposed points where a strictly convex lower semicontinuous function is continuous.
In this paper, we state some characterizations of $h$-convex function is defined on a convex set in a linear space. By doing so, we extend the Jensen-Mercer inequality for $h$-convex function. We will also define $h$-convex function for operators on a Hilbert space and present the operator version of the Jensen-Mercer inequality. Lastly, we propound the complementary inequality of Jensen's inequality for $h$-convex functions.
Let $f_{\bf c}(r)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty e^{c_n}r^n$ be an analytic function; ${\bf c}=(c_n)\in l_\infty$. We assume that $r$ is some logarithmically convex and lower semicontinuous functional on a locally convex topological space $L$. In this paper we derive a formula on the Legendre-Fenchel transform of a functional $\hatλ({\bf c},ϕ)=\ln f_{\bf c}(e^{λ(ϕ)})$, where $λ(ϕ)=\ln r(ϕ)$ ($ϕ\in L$). In this manner we generalize to the infinite case Theorem 3.1 from \cite{OZ1}.
In this paper, we prove an operator version of the Jensen's inequality and its converse for $h$-convex functions. We provide a refinement of the Jensen type inequality for $h$-convex functions. Moreover, we prove the Hermite-Hadamard's type inequality and a multiple operator version of the Jensen's inequality for $h$-convex functions. In particular, a result for convex, $P$-class, $s$-convex, Godunova-Levin, and $s$-Godunova-Levin functions can be deduced.
We introduce a property of Banach spaces called uniform convex-transitivity, which falls between almost transitivity and convex-transitivity. We will provide examples of uniformly convex-transitive spaces. This property behaves nicely in connection with some Banach-valued function spaces. As a consequence, we obtain new examples of convex-transitive Banach spaces.
In this paper, we prove some Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities for operator geometrically convex functions for non-commutative operators. Keywords: Operator geometrically convex function, Hermite-Hadamard inequality.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of strongly φ-convex functions with respect to c>0 and present some properties and representation of such functions. We obtain a characterization of inner product spaces involving the notion of strongly φ-convex functions. Finaly, a version of Hermite Hadamard-type inequalities for strongly φ-convex functions are established.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of log-φ-convex functions and present some properties and representation of such functions. We obtain some results of the Hermite Hadamard inequalities for product log-φ-convex functions.
In this article, we further explore convex functions by revealing new bounds, resulting from stronger convexity behavior. In particular, we define the so called radical convex functions and study their properties. We will see that such convex functions are bounded above by new curves, rather than straight lines. Applications including discrete and continuous Jensen inequalities, subadditivity behavior, Hermite-Hadamard and integral inequalities will be presented.
In this paper we provide a unified treatment of some convex minimization problems, which allows for a better understanding and, in some cases, improvement of results in this direction proved recently in spaces of curvature bounded above. For this purpose, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of compositions of finitely many firmly nonexpansive mappings in the setting of $p$-uniformly convex geodesic spaces focusing on asymptotic regularity and convergence results.
As a generalization of geodesic function, this paper introduces the notion of geodesic $ φ_{E} $-convex function. Some properties of $ φ_{E} $-convex function and geodesic $ φ_{E} $-convex function are established. The concepts of geodesic $ φ_{E} $-convex set and $ φ_{E} $-epigraph are equally given. The characterization of geodesic $ φ_{E} $-convex functions in terms of their $ φ_{E} $-epigraphs are also obtained.
This work presents a collection of useful properties of the Moreau envelope for finite-dimensional, proper, lower semicontinuous, convex functions. In particular, gauge functions and piecewise cubic functions are investigated and their Moreau envelopes categorized. Characterizations of convex Moreau envelopes are established; topics include strict convexity, strong convexity and Lipschitz continuity.
We give three proofs of the fact that a smoothly bounded, convex domain in R^n has smooth defining functions whose Hessians are non-negative definite in a neighborhood of the boundary of the domain.
We show that $C^0$-fine approximation of convex functions by smooth (or real analytic) convex functions on $\R^d$ is possible in general if and only if $d=1$. Nevertheless, for $d\geq 2$ we give a characterization of the class of convex functions on $\R^d$ which can be approximated by real analytic (or just smoother) convex functions in the $C^0$-fine topology. It turns out that the possibility of performing this kind of approximation is not determined by the degree of local convexity or smoothness of the given function, but by its global geometrical behavior. We give some applications concern…
Let $U\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be open and convex. We show that every (not necessarily Lipschitz or strongly) convex function $f:U\to\mathbb{R}$ can be approximated by real analytic convex functions, uniformly on all of $U$. In doing so we provide a technique which transfers results on uniform approximation on bounded sets to results on uniform approximation on unbounded sets, in such a way that not only convexity and $C^k$ smoothness, but also local Lipschitz constants, minimizers, order, and strict or strong convexity, are preserved. This transfer method is quite general and it can also be u…
