We investigate the simulation methods for a large family of stable random fields that appeared in the recent literature, known as the Karlin stable set-indexed processes. We exploit a new representation and implement the procedure introduced by Asmussen and Rosinski (2001) by first decomposing the random fields into large-jump and small-jump parts, and simulating each part separately. As special cases, simulations for several manifold-indexed processes are considered, and adjustments are introduced accordingly in order to improve the computational efficiency.
In this work we consider open quantum random walks on the non-negative integers. By considering orthogonal matrix polynomials we are able to describe transition probability expressions for classes of walks via a matrix version of the Karlin-McGregor formula. We focus on absorbing boundary conditions and, for simpler classes of examples, we consider path counting and the corresponding combinatorial tools. A non-commutative version of the gambler's ruin is studied by obtaining the probability of reaching a certain fortune and the mean time to reach a fortune or ruin in terms of generating functi…
We consider consistent dynamics for non-intersecting birth and death chains, originating from dualities of stochastic coalescing flows and one dimensional orthogonal polynomials. As corollaries, we obtain unified and simple probabilistic proofs of certain key intertwining relations between multivariate Markov chains on the levels of some branching graphs. Special cases include the dynamics on the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph considered by Borodin and Olshanski and the ones on the BC-type graph recently studied by Cuenca. Moreover, we introduce a general inhomogeneous random growth process with a wall…
We investigate the randomized Karlin model with parameter $β\in(0,1)$, which is based on an infinite urn scheme. It has been shown before that when the randomization is bounded, the so-called odd-occupancy process scales to a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $β/2\in(0,1/2)$. We show here that when the randomization is heavy-tailed with index $α\in(0,2)$, then the odd-occupancy process scales to a $(β/α)$-self-similar symmetric $α$-stable process with stationary increments.
The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite Karlin "balls-in-boxes" scheme with random probabilities of stick-breaking type. Assuming that the number of placed balls equals $n$, we prove several functional limit theorems (FLTs) in the Skorohod space $D[0,1]$ endowed with the $J_{1}$- or $M_{1}$-topology for the number $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ of boxes containing at most $[n^{t}]$ balls, $t\in[0,1]$, and the random distribution function $K_{n}^{*}(t)/K_{n}^{*}(1)$, as $n\to\infty$. The limit processes for $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ are of the form $(X(1)-X((1-t)-))_{t\in[0,1]}$, where $X$ is either a Brownian motion, a spec…
We propose an exact simulation method for Brown-Resnick random fields, building on new representations for these stationary max-stable fields. The main idea is to apply suitable changes of measure.
Two methods to approximate infinitely divisible random fields are presented. The methods are based on approximating the kernel function in the spectral representation of such fields, leading to numerical integration of the respective integrals. Error bounds for the approximation error are derived and the approximations are used to simulate certain classes of infinitely divisible random fields.
Intermediately subcritical branching processes in random environment are at the borderline between two subcritical regimes and exhibit a particularly rich behavior. In this paper, we prove a functional limit theorem for these processes. It is discussed together with two other recently proved limit theorems for the intermediately subcritical case and illustrated by several computer simulations.
This paper considers the problem of simultaneously estimating rare-event probabilities for a class of Gaussian random fields. A conventional rare-event simulation method is usually tailored to a specific rare event and consequently would lose estimation efficiency for different events of interest, which often results in additional computational cost in such simultaneous estimation problem. To overcome this issue, we propose a uniformly efficient estimator for a general family of Hölder continuous Gaussian random fields. We establish the asymptotic and uniform efficiency of the proposed method …
We consider a random process $Y(t)=\exp\{X(t)\}$, where $X(t)$ is a centered second-order process which correlation function $R(t,s)$ can be represented as $\int_{\mathbb{R}} u(t,y)\overline{u(s,y)} dy.$ A multiplicative wavelet-based representation is found for $Y(t)$. We propose a model for simulation of the process $Y(t)$ and find its rates of convergence to the process in the spaces $C([0,T])$ and $L_p([0,T])$ for the case when $X(t)$ is a strictly sub-Gaussian process.
In this paper, we consider a classic problem concerning the high excursion probabilities of a Gaussian random field $f$ living on a compact set $T$. We develop efficient computational methods for the tail probabilities $P(\sup_T f(t) > b)$ and the conditional expectations $E(Γ(f) | \sup_T f(t) > b)$ as $b\rightarrow \infty$. For each $\varepsilon$ positive, we present Monte Carlo algorithms that run in \emph{constant} time and compute the interesting quantities with $\varepsilon$ relative error for arbitrarily large $b$. The efficiency results are applicable to a large class of Hölder continuo…
We consider stochastic processes $Y(t)$ which can be represented as $Y(t)=(X(t))^s, s \in \mathbb{N},$ where $X(t)$ is a stationary strictly sub-Gaussian process and build a wavelet-based model that simulates $Y(t)$ with given accuracy and reliability in $L_p([0,T])$. A model for simulation with given accuracy and reliability in $L_p([0,T])$ is also built for processes $Z(t)$ which can be represented as $Z(t)=X_1(t) X_2(t)$, where $X_1(t)$ and $X_2(t)$ are independent stationary strictly sub-Gaussian processes.
We consider systems of stochastic differential equations with multiple scales and small noise and assume that the coefficients of the equations are ergodic and stationary random fields. Our goal is to construct provably-efficient importance sampling Monte Carlo methods that allow efficient computation of rare event probabilities or expectations of functionals that can be associated with rare events. Standard Monte Carlo algorithms perform poorly in the small noise limit and hence fast simulations algorithms become relevant. The presence of multiple scales complicates the design and the analysi…
Herein, we introduce and study a new class of discrete random fields designed for quick simulation and covariance inference under inhomogeneous condition. Simulation of these correlated fields can be done in a single pass instead of relying on multi-pass convergent methods like the Gibbs Sampler or other Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The fields are constructed directly from specified marginal probability mass functions and covariances between nearby sites. The proposition on which the construction is based establishes when and how it is possible to simplify the conditional probabilities of…
This paper presents an algorithm to simulate Gaussian random vectors whose precision matrix can be expressed as a polynomial of a sparse matrix. This situation arises in particular when simulating Gaussian Markov random fields obtained by the discretization by finite elements of the solutions of some stochastic partial derivative equations. The proposed algorithm uses a Chebyshev polynomial approximation to compute simulated vectors with a linear complexity. This method is asymptotically exact as the approximation order grows. Criteria based on tests of the statistical properties of the produc…
In this paper a Monte-Carlo method for simulating the motion of fluid flow moving along a solid wall is proposed. The random vortex method in the present paper is established by using the reflection technology and perturbation technique. The Monte-Carlo method based on this random vortex dynamic may be implemented, and several Monte-Carlo simulations are then carried out for the flows near the solid wall.
In this article we create a new algorithm for the perfect simulation of the infinite Potts model at a sufficiently small or at a sufficiently high temperature, in particular under the transition phase temperature. We study the model for free boundary conditions and we give some consequences for the constant boundary conditions.
We study the regularity properties of Gaussian fields defined over spheres cross time. In particular, we consider two alternative spectral decompositions for a Gaussian field on $\mathbb{S}^d \times \mathbb{R}$. For each decomposition, we establish regularity properties through Sobolev and interpolation spaces. We then propose a simulation method and study its level of accuracy in the $L^2$ sense. The method turns to be both fast and efficient.
Motivated by the Central Limit Theorem, in this paper, we study both universal and non-universal simulations of random variables with an arbitrary target distribution $Q_{Y}$ by general mappings, not limited to linear ones (as in the Central Limit Theorem). We derive the fastest convergence rate of the approximation errors for such problems. Interestingly, we show that for discontinuous or absolutely continuous $P_{X}$, the approximation error for the universal simulation is almost as small as that for the non-universal one; and moreover, for both universal and non-universal simulations, the a…
We leverage proof techniques Fourier analysis and an existing result in coding theory to derive new bounds for the problem of non-interactive simulation of binary random variables. Previous bounds in the literature were derived by applying data processing inequalities concerning maximal correlation or hypercontractivity. We show that our bounds are sharp in some regimes. For a specific instance of problem parameters, our main result answers an open problem posed by E. Mossel in 2017. As by-products of our analyses, various new properties of the average distance and distance enumerator of binar…
