Understanding the influence of hydrodynamic stresses and colloidal interactions between droplets and membranes will inform better engineered membrane surfaces and process conditions. Using a long-wave hydrodynamic description that incorporates wettability and electrostatic repulsion, we numerically investigate the influence of droplet shapes and membrane characteristics on the overall repulsion-attraction towards the membrane surface. A stability phase diagram classifies stable-unstable drop shapes and investigate whether there is reversible deposition of droplets onto the membrane.
Place a droplet of mineral oil on water and the oil will spread to cover the water surface in a thin film -- a phenomenon familiar to many, owing to the rainbow-faced puddles left behind leaking buses on rainy days. In this paper we study the everted problem: an aqueous droplet deposited onto a deep layer of silicone oil. As it is energetically favourable for the oil phase to spread to cover the droplet surface completely, the droplet is ultimately engulfed in the oil layer. We present a detailed study of engulfment dynamics, from the instant the droplet first impacts the oil surface until it …
The behavior of an oil droplet pinned at the entrance of a micropore and subject to clossflow-induced shear is investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equation. We found that in the absence of crossflow, the critical transmembrane pressure required to force the droplet into the pore is in excellent agreement with a theoretical prediction based on the Young-Laplace equation. With increasing shear rate, the critical pressure of permeation increases, and at sufficiently high shear rates the oil droplet breaks up into two segments. The results of numerical simulations indicate that d…
Droplets can self-propel when immersed in another liquid in which a concentration gradient is present. Here we report the experimental and numerical study of a self-propelling oil droplet in a vertically stratified ethanol/water mixture: At first, the droplet sinks slowly due to gravity, but then, before having reached its density matched position, jumps up suddenly. More remarkably, the droplet bounces repeatedly with an ever increasing jumping distance, until all of a sudden it stops after about 30 min. We identify the Marangoni stress at the droplet/liquid interface as responsible for the j…
Active fluid droplets surrounded by oil can spontaneously develop circulatory flows. However, the dynamics of the surrounding oil and their influence on the active fluid remain poorly understood. To investigate interactions between the active fluid and the passive oil across their interface, kinesin-driven microtubule-based active fluid droplets were immersed in oil and compressed into a cylinder-like shape. The droplet geometry supported intradroplet circulatory flows, but the circulation was suppressed when the thickness of the oil layer surrounding the droplet decreased. Experiments with tr…
We report on the self-propulsion of boiling droplets which, despite their contact with viscous, immiscible oil films, attain high velocities comparable to those of levitating Leidenfrost droplets. Experiments and model reveal that droplet propulsion originates from a coupling between seemingly disparate short and long timescale phenomena due to microsecond fluctuations induced by boiling events at the droplet-oil interface. This interplay of phenomena leads to continuous asymmetric vapor release and momentum transfer for high droplet velocities.
We observe electro-hydrodynamically driven turbulent flows at low Reynolds numbers in a two-fluid emulsion consisting of micron-scale droplets. In the presence of electric fields, the droplets produce interacting hydrodynamic flows which result in a dynamical organization at a spatial scale much larger than the size of the individual droplets. We characterize the dynamics associated with these structures by both video imaging and a simultaneous, in situ, measurement of the time variation of the bulk Reynolds stress with a rheometer. The results display scale invariance in the energy spectra in…
This study concerns the effects of pressure, spatial location, and application of oil emulsions on the resulting droplet size, eccentricity, as well as velocity distributions, all of which are crucial information in determining the dispersion dynamics of the droplets during the spray applications. Experiments were conducted with the abovementioned droplets information measured using digital inline holography (DIH). Results show that the volumetric droplet size distributions (VDSD) span widely from sub-200 um to over 2 mm in size. The application of an oil-in-water emulsion results largely in t…

A model is developed for describing the transport of charged colloidal particles in an evaporating sessile droplet on the electrified metal substrate in the presence of a solvent flow. The model takes into account the electric charge of colloidal particles and small ions produced by electrolytic dissociation of the active groups on the colloidal particles and solvent molecules. We employ a system of self-consistent Poisson and Nernst--Planck equations for electric potential and average concentrations of colloidal particles and ions with the appropriate boundary conditions. The fluid dynamics, …
Moving contact lines of more than two phases dictate a large number of interfacial phenomena. Despite its significance to fundamental and applied processes, the contact lines at a junction of four-phases (two immiscible liquids, solid and gas) have been addressed only in a few investigations. Here, we report an intriguing phenomenon that follows after the four phases of oil, water, solid and gas make contact through the coalescence of two different three-phase contact lines. We combine experimental study and theoretical analysis to reveal and rationalize the dynamics exhibited upon the coalesc…
By varying the oil volume fraction, the microscopic droplet size and the macroscopic rheology of emulsions are investigated in a Taylor-Couette (TC) turbulent shear flow. Although here oil and water in the emulsions have almost the same physical properties (density and viscosity), unexpectedly, we find that oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions have very distinct hydrodynamic behaviors, i.e., the system is clearly asymmetric. By looking at the micro-scales, the average droplet diameter hardly changes with the oil volume fraction neither for O/W nor for W/O. However, for W/O it is…
Recently, there has been much progress in the design and application of oil-repellent superoleophobic surfaces. Polyzwitterionic brush surfaces are of particular interest, because of their ability to repel oil under water, even in the absence of micro-/nano-structures. The origin of this underwater superoleophobicity is attributed to the presence of a stable water film beneath the oil droplet, but this had not been demonstrated experimentally. Here, using optical interferometric techniques, we show that an oil droplet effectively hydroplanes over a water film, whose thickness is between one hu…
In this work, we unravel the role of surface properties of colloidal particles on the formation of supraparticles (clusters of colloidal particles) in a colloidal Ouzo droplet. Self-lubricating colloidal Ouzo droplets are an efficient and simple approach to form supraparticles, overcoming the challenge of the coffee stain effect in situ. Supraparticles are an efficient route to high-performance materials in various fields, from catalysis to carriers for therapeutics. Yet, the role of the surface of colloidal particles in the formation of supraparticles using Ouzo droplets remains unknown. Ther…
Bacteria biodegradation of immiscible oil requires cell-droplet encounters, surface attachment, and hydrocarbon metabolism. Chemical dispersants are applied to oil spills to reduce the mean dispersed droplet size, thereby increasing the available surface area for attachment, in attempts to facilitate bacterial biodegradation. However, their effectiveness remains contentious as studies have shown that dispersants can inhibit, enhance, or have no effect on biodegradation. Therefore, questions remain on whether dispersants affect surface attachment or cell viability. Here, using microfluidics and…
The influence of geometrical parameters and fluid properties on the critical pressure of permeation of an oil micro-droplet into a slotted pore is studied numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. We consider a long slotted pore, which is partially blocked by the oil droplet but allows a finite permeate flux. An analytical estimate of the critical permeation pressure is obtained from a force balance model that involves the drag force from the flow around the droplet and surface tension forces as well as the pressure variation inside the pore. It was found that numerical results for t…
Understanding flow patterns and coupled transport phenomena during evaporation of droplets loaded with colloidal particles is central to design technical applications such as organizing proteins/DNA on a solid surface. We review recent reports on evaporating sessile droplets of colloidal suspensions on a solid surface. Starting from the classical mechanism of formation of a ring-like deposit, we discuss the influence of several problem parameters. Notably, thermal or solutal Marangoni effect, particle size, particle concentration, particle shape, substrate wettability, pH of the suspension etc…
Microfluidic techniques have been extensively developed to realize micro-total analysis systems in a small chip. For microanalysis, electro-magnetic forces have generally been utilized for the trapping of objects, but hydrodynamics has been little explored despite its relevance to pattern formation. Here, we report that water-in-oil (W/O) droplets can be transported in the grid of an array of other large W/O droplets. As each droplet approaches an interspace of the large droplet array, while exhibiting persistent back-and-forth motion, it is conveyed at a velocity equal to the droplet array. W…
The impact of a buoyancy driven oil droplet with an oil-water interface is investigated using time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) along with a phase discrimination by means of high-speed Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF). In this paper we focus on the investigation of strategies to optimize the performance of high-speed PIV algorithms. Furthermore this data will be used for validation of numerical simulations of two phase flows. To simultaneously measure the flow velocities inside and around the oil droplet by PIV the refractive indices of both phases need to be matched. The aqueous …
Ring-shaped deposits can be often found after a droplet evaporates on a substrate. If the fluid in the droplet is a pure liquid and its contact line remains pinned during the process, the mechanism behind such ring-shaped deposition is the well-known coffee-stain effect. However, adding small amounts of salt to such a droplet can change the internal flow dramatically and consequently change the deposition mechanism. Due to an increase of surface tension in the contact line region, a Marangoni flow arises which is directed from the apex of the droplet towards the contact line. As a result, part…
This study addresses the issue of oil removal from water using hydrophilic porous membranes. The effective separation of oil-in-water dispersions involves high flux of water through the membrane and, at the same time, high rejection rate of the oil phase. The effects of transmembrane pressure and crossflow velocity on rejection of oil droplets and thin oil films by pores of different cross-section are investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equation. We found that in the absence of crossflow, the critical transmembrane pressure, which is required for the oil droplet entry into a …
Electrowetting has a potential to realize stand-alone point-of-care (POC) devices. Here we report droplet-migration characteristics on oil-infused electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) substrates. We prepare sparse micropillars to retain the oil layer in order to exploit the layer as a lubricating film. A physical model of the droplet velocity is developed, and effects of the lubrication, the oil viscosity, the droplet volume, and the thickness of solid and liquid dielectric layers are discussed. It is found that the droplet velocity is scaled as square of E, which differs from a relationship of…
Evaporation-driven particle self-assembly can be used to generate three-dimensional microstructures. We present a new method to create these colloidal microstructures, in which we can control the amount of particles and their packing fraction. To this end, we evaporate colloidal dispersion droplets on a special type of superhydrophobic micro-structured surface, on which the droplet re- mains in Cassie-Baxter state during the entire evaporative process. The remainders of the droplet consist of a massive spherical cluster of the microspheres, with diameters ranging from a few tens up to several …
The present study experimentally and numerically investigates the evaporation and resultant patterns of dried deposits of aqueous colloidal sessile droplets, when the droplets are initially elevated to a high temperature before being placed on a substrate held at ambient temperature. The system is then released for natural evaporation without applying any external perturbation. Infrared thermography and optical profilometry were used as essential tools for interfacial temperature measurements and quantification of the coffee-ring dimensions, respectively. Initially, a significant temperature g…
We investigate deposit patterns and associated morphology formed after the evaporation of an aqueous droplet containing mono- and bi-dispersed colloidal particles. In particular, the combined effect of substrate heating and particle diameter is investigated. We employ high-speed visualization, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to characterize the evaporating droplets, particle motion, and deposit morphology, respectively. In the context of mono-dispersed colloidal particles, an inner deposit and a typical ring form for smaller and larger particles, respectively, on a nonheate…
The deposition of particles on a substrate by drying a colloidal suspension droplet is at the core of applications ranging from traditional printing on paper to printable electronics or photovoltaic devices. The self-pinning induced by the accumulation of particles at the contact line plays an important role in the formation of the deposition. In this paper, we investigate both numerically and theoretically, the effect of friction between the particles and the substrate on the deposition pattern. Without friction, the contact line shows a stick-slip behaviour and a dot-like deposit is left aft…
This research introduces a new drop fluidics, which uses a deformable and stretchable elastomeric film as the platform, instead of the commonly used rigid supports. Such a soft film impregnated with magnetic particles can be modulated with an external electromagnetic field that produces a vast array of topographical landscapes with varying surface curvature, which, in conjunction with capillarity, can direct and control motion of water droplets efficiently and accurately. When a thin layer of oil is present on this film that is deformed locally, a centrosymmetric wedge is formed. A water dropl…

The Greek aperitif Ouzo is not only famous for its specific anise-flavored taste, but also for its ability to turn from a transparent miscible liquid to a milky-white colored emulsion when water is added. Recently, it has been shown that this so-called Ouzo effect, i.e. the spontaneous emulsification of oil microdroplets, can also be triggered by the preferential evaporation of ethanol in an evaporating sessile Ouzo drop, leading to an amazingly rich drying process with multiple phase transitions [H. Tan et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 113(31) (2016) 8642]. Due to the enhanced evaporation n…
This fluid dynamics video shows how an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by an ionic surfactant spreads on the free surface of a layer of pure water. The spreading shows two intriguing features: a transparent area surrounding the source of oil droplets, and a fast retraction of the layer of oil droplets on itself once the source has emptied. We show that the dynamics of spreading are strongly connected to the interfacial/bulk properties of the surfactant.
The generation of single, monodisperse compound droplets is shown in these fluid dynamics videos. In an apparatus designed to produce single compound droplets, a piezoelectric diaphragm generates a pressure pulse from a voltage waveform input to eject a droplet. In the method presented, oil is allowed to flow into the water nozzle with the pressure pulse ejecting both fluids as a compound droplet. Experiments were performed to demonstrate how changes in water pressure affect compound droplet compositions. It was found that increasing the water pressure decreased the thickness of the compound d…
Drying of colloidal droplets on solid, rigid substrates is associated with a capillary pressure developing within the droplet. In due course of time, the capillary pressure builds up due to droplet evaporation resulting in the formation of a colloidal thin film that is prone to crack formation. In this study, we show that introducing a minimal amount of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) can completely suppress the crack formation. The mechanism behind the curbing of the crack formation may be attributed to the capillary stress-absorbing cushion provided by the elastic arrangements of the liquid cry…
We present a comprehensive study of nanoparticle deposition from drying of colloidal droplets. By means of lattice Boltzmann modeling and theoretical analysis, various deposition patterns, including mountain-like, uniform and coffee ring, as well as un-/symmetrical multiring/mountain-like patterns are achieved. The ratio of nanoparticles deposited at droplet peripheries and center is proposed to quantify different patterns. Its value is controlled by the competition between the capillary flow and nanoparticle diffusion, leading to a linear dependence on an effective Péclet number, across over …
Droplet formation in a system of two or more immiscible fluids is a celebrated topic of research in the fluid mechanics community. In this work, we propose an innovative phenomenon where oil when injected drop-wise into a pool of water moves towards the air-water interface where it floats in a fully submerged condition. The configuration, however, is not stable and a slight perturbation to the system causes the droplet to burst and float in partially submerged condition. The droplet contour is analyzed using edge detection. Temporal variation of a characteristic length of the droplet is analyz…
Dispersants aid the breakup of crude oil masses and increase the available interfacial surface area for bacteria to degrade insoluble hydrocarbons in the marine environment. However, this common view neglects key aspects of the microscale interactions between bacteria and oil droplets, particularly the encounters between these elements that are required for degradation to occur. This chapter discusses a biophysical model for hydrocarbon consumption of suspended oil droplets under conditions of rapid dilution that occur in natural environments. Based on the model, which includes typical biologi…
We simulated an experiment in which a thin colloidal sessile droplet is allowed to dry out on a horizontal hydrophilic surface when a mask just above the droplet predominantly allows evaporation from the droplet free surface directly beneath the holes in the mask [Harris D J, Hu H, Conrad J C and Lewis J A 2007 \textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{98} 148301]. We considered one particular case when centre-to-centre spacing between the holes is much less than the drop diameter. In our model, advection, diffusion, and sedimentation were taken into account. FlexPDE was utilized to solve an advection…
The Feynman path integral approach for solving the motion of a droplet along a silicon oil surface is developed by replacing the Planck constant by a surrogate parameter. The latter is proportional to the surface tension of the silicon oil multiplied by the area of the thin air film, separating the droplet from the oil, and by the half-period of the Faraday oscillations. It is shown that the Navier-Stokes equation together with the mass conservation equation can be reduced to the Schrödinger equation when the surrogate parameter replaces the Planck constant. The Feynman path integral underlyin…
This article explores the governing role of the internal hydrodynamics and advective transport within sessile colloidal droplets on the self assembly of nanostructures to form floral patterns. Water acetone binary fluid and Bi2O3 nanoflakes based complex fluids are experimented with. Microliter sessile droplets are allowed to vaporize and the dry out patterns are examined using scanning electron microscopy. The presence of distributed self assembled rose like structures is observed. The population density, structure and shape of the floral structures are noted to be dependent on the binary flu…
Effects of substrate temperature, substrate wettability and particles concentration are experimentally investigated for evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing colloidal particles. Time-varying droplet shapes and temperature of the liquid-gas interface are measured using high-speed visualization and infrared thermography, respectively. The motion of the particles inside the evaporating droplet is qualitatively visualized by an optical microscope and profile of final particle deposit is measured by an optical profilometer. On a non-heated hydrophilic substrate, a ring-like deposit for…
Droplets bouncing on a vibrated liquid bath open ways to methods of manipulating droplets, creating double emulsion and performing pilot wave model experiments. In this work, we focus on the role of the droplet deformations in the vertical bouncing dynamics by neglecting the deformation of the surface of the bath. To be under this favorable conditions, low viscous oil droplet are dropped over a highly viscous oil bath. These droplets bounce vertically on the surface of the bath and exhibit many periodic trajectories and resonant modes when tuning the forcing parameters, i.e. the oscillation of…
We experimentally investigate the profile and morphology of the ring-like deposits obtained after evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing polystyrene colloidal particles on a hydrophilic glass substrate. In particular, the coupled effect of particle size and concentration are studied. The deposits were qualitatively visualized under an optical microscope and profile of the ring was measured by an optical profilometer. The profile of the ring resembles a partial torus-like shape for all cases of particles size and concentration. The cracks on the surface of the ring were found to occu…
