Transient growth and resolvent analyses are routinely used to assess non-asymptotic properties of fluid flows. In particular, resolvent analysis can be interpreted as a special case of viewing flow dynamics as an open system in which free-stream turbulence, surface roughness, and other irregularities provide sources of input forcing. We offer a comprehensive summary of the tools that can be employed to probe the dynamics of fluctuations around a laminar or turbulent base flow in the presence of such stochastic or deterministic input forcing and describe how input-output techniques enhance resolvent analysis. Specifically, physical insights that may remain hidden in the resolvent analysis are gained by detailed examination of input-output responses between spatially-localized body forces and selected linear combinations of state variables. This differentiating feature plays a key role in quantifying the importance of different mechanisms for bypass transition in wall-bounded shear flows and in explaining how turbulent jets generate noise. We highlight the utility of a stochastic framework, with white or colored inputs, in addressing a variety of open challenges including transition in complex fluids, flow control, and physics-aware data-driven turbulence modeling. Applications with time- or spatially-periodic base flows are discussed and future research directions are outlined.
Plane Poiseuille flow shows turbulence at a Reynolds number that is lower than the critical one for the onset of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. The transition to turbulence follows the same route as the by-pass transition in boundary layers, i.e. finite amplitude perturbations are required and the flow is dominated by downstream vortices and streaks in the transitional regime. In order to relate the phenomenology in plane Poiseuille flow to our previous studies of plane Couette flow (Kreilos & Eckhardt, 2012), we study a symmetric subspace of plane Poiseuille flow in which the bifurcation cascade…
To understand the self-sustenance of subcritical turbulence in spectrally stable shear flows, we performed direct numerical simulations of homogeneous shear turbulence for different aspect ratios of the flow domain and analyzed the dynamical processes in Fourier space. There are no exponentially growing modes in such flows and the turbulence is energetically supported only by the linear growth of perturbation harmonics due to the shear flow non-normality. This non-normality-induced, or nonmodal growth is anisotropic in spectral space, which, in turn, leads to anisotropy of nonlinear processes …
The spatio-temporal aspects of the transition to turbulence are considered in the case of a boundary layer flow developing above a flat plate exposed to free-stream turbulence. Combining results on the receptivity to free-stream turbulence with the nonlinear concept of a transition threshold, a physically motivated model suggests a spatial distribution of spot nucleation events. To describe the evolution of turbulent spots a probabilistic cellular automaton is introduced, with all parameters directly fitted from numerical simulations of the boundary layer. The nucleation rates are then combine…
This brief is organized as follows. In Section 2 we introduce the filter-scale energy equations that lead to the subfilter-scale dissipation term P. We discuss the properties of the sources and sinks of kinetic energy, and identify our target features concerning an optimal inter-scale energy transfer (ISET) term. A similar analysis is performed in Section 3 for the kinetic energy associated with the subfilter velocities, and a new ISET term T is introduced. Comparisons between T and P for different flows and for various filters are offered in Section 4 and Section 5. Finally, we present our co…
Cold accretion disks such as those in star-forming systems, quiescent cataclysmic variables, and some active galactic nuclei, are expected to have neutral gas which does not couple well to magnetic fields. The turbulent viscosity in such disks must be hydrodynamic in origin, not magnetohydrodynamic. We investigate the growth of hydrodynamic perturbations in a linear shear flow sandwiched between two parallel walls. The unperturbed flow is similar to plane Couette flow but with a Coriolis force included. Although there are no exponentially growing eigenmodes in this system, nevertheless, becaus…
Despite observational evidence for cold neutral astrophysical accretion disks, the viscous process which may drive the accretion in such systems is not yet understood. While molecular viscosity is too small to explain the observed accretion efficiencies by more than ten orders of magnitude, the absence of any linear instability in Keplerian accretion flows is often used to rule out the possibility of turbulent viscosity. Recently, the fact that some fine tuned disturbances of any inviscid shear flow can reach arbitrarily large transient growth has been proposed as an alternative route to turbu…
A new exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is derived for the compressible flows which are far from equilibrium in the limit of extremely low shear viscosity and relatively large volume viscosity. The closed description of the evolution of statistical moments of velocity is obtained, thereby bypassing the closure problem in the theory of turbulence.
The dynamics of fluids is a long standing challenge that remained as an unsolved problem for centuries. Understanding its main features, chaos and turbulence, is likely to provide an understanding of the principles and non-linear dynamics of a large class of systems far from equilibrium. We consider a conceptually new viewpoint to study these features using black hole dynamics. Since the gravitational field is characterized by a curved geometry, the gravity variables provide a geometrical framework for studying the dynamics of fluids: A geometrization of turbulence.
The current work presents a realizable method to control streaky disturbances in boundary layer flows and delay transition to turbulence via active flow control. Numerical simulations of the nonlinear transitional regime in a Blasius boundary layer are performed where streaks are excited in the boundary layer via a high level of free-stream turbulence (FST). The occurring disturbances are measured via localized wall sensors and damped via near-wall actuators resembling plasma actuators. The time-varying amplitude of the signal of each actuator is computed by processing signals from the sensors…
Reductionism is a prevalent viewpoint in science according to which all physical phenomena can be understood from fundamental laws of physics. Anderson [Science, 177, 393 (1972)], Laughlin and Pines [PNAS, 97, 28 (2000)], and others have countered this viewpoint and argued in favour hierarchical structure of the universe and laws. In this paper we advance the latter perspective by showing that some of the complex flow properties derived using hydrodynamic equations (macroscopic laws) are very difficult, if not impossible, to describe in microscopic framework---kinetic theory. These properties …
The transition of the flow in a duct of square cross-section is studied. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers; this flow is thus a good candidate to investigate the 'bypass' path to turbulence. Initially the so-called 'linear optimal perturbation problem' is formulated and solved, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices. Such optimals, however, fail to elicit a significant response from the system in the nonlinear regime. Thus, streamwise-inhomogeneous, sub-optimal disturbances are focussed upon; nonlinear …
A new 3D transition turbulence model, more accurate and faster than an empirical transition model, is proposed. The model is based on the calculation of the pre-transitional u'v' due to mean flow shear. The present transition model is fully described and verified against eight benchmark test cases. Computations are performed for the ERCOFTAC flat-plate T3A, T3C and T3L test cases. Further, the model is validated for bypass, cross-flow and separation induced transition and compared with empirical transition models. The model presents very good results for bypass transition under zero-pressure g…
New aspects of turbulence are uncovered if one considers flow motion from the perspective of a fluid particle (known as the Lagrangian approach) rather than in terms of a velocity field (the Eulerian viewpoint). Using a new experimental technique, based on the scattering of ultrasounds, we have obtained a direct measurement of particle velocities, resolved at all scales, in a fully turbulent flow. It enables us to approach intermittency in turbulence from a dynamical point of view and to analyze the Lagrangian velocity fluctuations in the framework of random walks. We find experimentally that …
The structure and the dynamics of homogeneous turbulence are modified by the presence of body forces such that the Coriolis or the buoyancy forces, which may render a wide range of turbulence scales anisotropic. The corresponding statistical characterization of such effects is done in physical space using structure functions, as well as in spectral space with spectra of two-point correlations, providing two complementary viewpoints. In this framework, second-order and third-order structure functions are put in parallel with spectra of two-point second- and third-order velocity correlation func…
A recent Letter by Oberlack et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 024502 (2022)] claims to have derived new symmetry-induced solutions of the non-modelled statistical Navier-Stokes equations of turbulent channel flow. A high accuracy match to DNS data for all streamwise moments up to order 6 is presented, both in the region of the channel-center and in the inertial sublayer close to the wall. Here we will show that the findings and conclusions in that study are highly misleading, as they give the impression that a significant breakthrough in turbulence research has been achieved. But, unfortunately, t…
We report an experimental investigation on the influence of an external magnetic field on forced 3D turbulence of liquid gallium in a closed vessel. We observe an exponential damping of the turbulent velocity fluctuations as a function of the interaction parameter N (ratio of Lorentz force over inertial terms of the Navier-Stokes equation). The flow structures develop some anisotropy but do not become bidimensional. From a dynamical viewpoint, the damping first occurs homogeneously over the whole spectrum of frequencies. For larger values of N, a very strong additional damping occurs at the hi…
The fluid dynamics video considers an array of two NREL 5-MW turbines separated by seven rotor diameters in a neutral atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The neutral atmospheric boundary-layer flow data were obtained from a precursor ABL simulation using a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) framework within OpenFOAM. The mean wind speed at hub height is 8m/s, and the surface roughness is 0.2m. The actuator line method (ALM) is used to model the wind turbine blades by means of body forces added to the momentum equation. The fluid dynamics video shows the root and tip vortices emanating from the blades f…
Nonlinear interaction between different scales in turbulence results in both interscale and spatial transport of turbulent energy, and the role of such scale interactions in turbulent heat transfer mechanism is also of practical importance from the engineering viewpoint. In the present study, we investigate a turbulent plane Couette flow with passive-scalar heat transfer at the Prandtl number 0.71, in order to address the similarity/difference between the scale interactions in the velocity and temperature fields. The constant-temperature-difference boundary condition is used so that the mean v…
Large-scale magnetic fields thread through the electrically conducting matter of the interplanetary and interstellar medium, stellar interiors, and other astrophysical plasmas, producing anisotropic flows with regions of high-Reynolds-number turbulence. It is common to encounter turbulent flows structured by a magnetic field with a strength approximately equal to the root-mean-square magnetic fluctuations. In this work, direct numerical simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence influenced by such a magnetic field are conducted for a series of cases that have identical res…
We study the time evolution of velocity and pressure gradients in isotropic turbulence, by quantifying their decorrelation time scales as one follows fluid particles in the flow. The Lagrangian analysis uses data in a public database generated using direct numerical simulation of the Naiver-Stokes equations, at a Reynolds number 430. It is confirmed that when averaging over the entire domain, correlation functions decay on timescales on the order of the mean Kolmogorov turnover time scale, computed from the globally averaged rate of dissipation and viscosity. However, when performing the analy…
Helicity, as one of only two inviscid invariants in three-dimensional turbulence, plays an important role in the generation and evolution of turbulence. From the traditional viewpoint, there exists only one channel of helicity cascade similar to that of kinetic energy cascade. Through theoretical analysis, we find that there are two channels in helicity cascade process. The first channel mainly originates from vortex twisting process, and the second channel mainly originates from vortex stretching process. By analysing the data of direct numerical simulations of typical turbulent flows, we fin…
The main part of this contribution to the special issue of EJM-B/Fluids dedicated to Patrick Huerre outlines the problem of the subcritical transition to turbulence in wall-bounded flows in its historical perspective with emphasis on plane Couette flow, the flow generated between counter-translating parallel planes. Subcritical here means discontinuous and direct, with strong hysteresis. This is due to the existence of nontrivial flow regimes between the global stability threshold Re_g, the upper bound for unconditional return to the base flow, and the linear instability threshold Re_c charact…
Recent progress in understanding subcritical transition to turbulence is based on the concept of the edge, the manifold separating the basins of attraction of the laminar and the turbulent state. Originally developed in numerical studies of parallel shear flows with a linearly stable base flow, this concept is adapted here to the case of a spatially developing Blasius boundary layer. Longer time horizons fundamentally change the nature of the problem due to the loss of stability of the base flow due to Tollmien--Schlichting (TS) waves. We demonstrate, using a moving box technique, that efficie…
The effect of slip surfaces on the laminar-turbulent separatrix of plane Poiseuille flow is studied by direct numerical simulation. Turbulence lifetimes, the likelihood that turbulence is sustained, is investigated for transitional flows with various slip lengths. Slip surfaces decrease the likelihood of sustained turbulence compared to the no-slip case, and likelihood is further decreased as slip length is increased. A deterministic analysis of the effects of slip surfaces on transition to turbulence is performed using nonlinear traveling wave solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations, also kn…
A temporal complex network-based approach is proposed as a novel formulation to investigate turbulent mixing from a Lagrangian viewpoint. By exploiting a spatial proximity criterion, the dynamics of a set of fluid particles is geometrized into a time-varying weighted network. Specifically, a numerically solved turbulent channel flow is employed as an exemplifying case. We show that the time-varying network is able to clearly describe the particle swarm dynamics, in a parametrically robust and computationally inexpensive way. The network formalism enables to straightforwardly identify transient…
This paper is concerned with the transition of the laminar flow in a duct of square cross-section. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers, rendering this flow a suitable candidate for a study of the 'bypass' path to turbulence. It has already been shown \citep{Biau_JFM_2008} that the classical linear optimal perturbation problem, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices, fails to provide an 'optimal' path to turbulence, i.e. optimal perturbations do not elicit a significant nonlinear response from the flow. Pr…
We demonstrate via direct numerical simulations that a periodic, oscillating mean flow spontaneously develops from turbulently generated internal waves. We consider a minimal physical model where the fluid self-organizes in a convective layer adjacent to a stably stratified one. Internal waves are excited by turbulent convective motions, then nonlinearly interact to produce a mean flow reversing on timescales much longer than the waves' period. Our results demonstrate for the first time that the three-scale dynamics due to convection, waves, and mean flow is generic and hence can occur in many…
This work presents a formalism to improve the predictive accuracy of physical models by learning generalizable augmentations from sparse data. Building on recent advances in data-driven turbulence modeling, the present approach, referred to as Learning and Inference assisted by Feature-space Engineering (LIFE), is based on the hypothesis that robustness and generalizability demand a meticulously-designed feature space that is informed by the underlying physics, and a carefully constructed features-to-augmentation map. The critical components of this approach are: (1) Maintaining consistency ac…
Turbulent state of spectrally stable shear flows may be developed and sustained according to the bypass scenario of transition. If it works in non-magnetised boundless and homogeneous quasi-Keplerian flow, transiently growing shearing vortices should supply turbulence with energy. Employing the large shearing box approximation, as well as a set of global disc models, we study the optimal growth of the shearing vortices in such a flow in the whole range of azimuthal length-scales, $λ_y$, as compared to the flow scale-height, $H$. It is shown that with the account of the viscosity the highest po…
Direct simulations of two-dimensional plane channel flow of a viscoelastic fluid at Reynolds number Re = 3000 reveal the existence of a family of attractors whose structure closely resembles the linear Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) mode, and in particular exhibits strongly localized stress fluctuations at the critical layer position of the TS mode. At the parameter values chosen, this solution branch is not connected to the nonlinear TS solution branch found for Newtonian flow, and thus represents a solution family that is nonlinearly self-sustained by viscoelasticity. The ratio between stress and…
Flows within porous media play important roles in many scientific and industrial systems. However, the case wherein such flows become turbulent has not been completely understood, particularly, from a mathematical viewpoint. In this study, the $k-\varepsilon$ model (the variable $k$ denotes the turbulent kinetic energy per unit mass and $\varepsilon$ the dissipation rate for the turbulent kinetic energy), which has been widely used for the usual turbulent flow in a clear fluid, was applied to a turbulent flow through porous media. If a homogeneous, averaged flow and homogeneous isotropic turbu…

A new methodology based on energy flux similarity is suggested in this paper for large eddy simulation (LES) of transitional and turbulent flows. Existing knowledge reveals that the energy cascade generally exists in transitional and turbulent flows with different distributions, and the characteristic quantity of scale interaction in energy cascade processes is energy flux. Therefore, energy flux similarity is selected as the basic criterion to secure the flow field getting from LES highly similar to the real flow field. Through a priori tests, we find that the energy flux from the tensor-diff…
