New aspects of turbulence are uncovered if one considers flow motion from the perspective of a fluid particle (known as the Lagrangian approach) rather than in terms of a velocity field (the Eulerian viewpoint). Using a new experimental technique, based on the scattering of ultrasounds, we have obtained a direct measurement of particle velocities, resolved at all scales, in a fully turbulent flow. It enables us to approach intermittency in turbulence from a dynamical point of view and to analyze the Lagrangian velocity fluctuations in the framework of random walks. We find experimentally that the elementary steps in the 'walk' have random uncorrelated directions but a magnitude that is extremely long-range correlated in time. Theoretically, we study a Langevin equation that incorporates these features and we show that the resulting dynamics accounts for the observed one- and two-point statistical properties of the Lagrangian velocity fluctuations. Our approach connects the intermittent statistical nature of turbulence to the dynamics of the flow.

We demonstrate that like in the forward cascade of three dimensional turbulence that displays intermittency (lack of self-similarity) due to the concentration of energy dissipation in a small set of fractal dimension less than three, the inverse cascade of two-dimensional turbulence can also display lack of self-similarity and intermittency if the energy injection is constrained in a fractal set of dimension less than two. A series of numerical simulations of two dimensional turbulence are examined, using different forcing functions of the same forcing length-scale but different fractal dimens…
Analyzing a large data base of high-resolution three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of decaying rotating stratified flows, we show that anomalous mixing and dissipation, marked anisotropy, and strong intermittency are all observed simultaneously in an intermediate regime of parameters in which both waves and eddies interact nonlinearly. A critical behavior governed by the stratification occurs at Richardson numbers of order unity, and with the flow close to being in a state of instability. This confirms the central dynamical role, in rotating stratified turbulence, of large-scale int…
A class of spectral subgrid models based on a self-similar and reversible closure is studied with the aim to minimize the impact of subgrid scales on the inertial range of fully developed turbulence. In this manner, we improve the scale extension where anomalous exponents are measured by roughly one order of magnitude, when compared to direct numerical simulations or to other popular subgrid closures at the same resolution. We found a first indication that intermittency for high order moments is not captured by many of the popular phenomenological models developed so far.
We present a generalized picture of intermittency in turbulence that is based on the theory of stochastic processes. To this end, we rely on the experimentally and numerically verified finding by R.~Friedrich and J.~Peinke [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 863 (1997)] that allows for an interpretation of the turbulent energy cascade as a Markov process of the velocity increments in scale. It is explicitly shown that all known phenomenological models of turbulence can be reproduced by the Kramers-Moyal expansion of the velocity increment probability density function that is associated to a Markov process. …
The interaction of fluids with surface-mounted obstacles in canopy flows leads to strong turbulence that dominates dispersion and mixing in the neutrally stable atmospheric surface layer. This work focuses on intermittency in the Lagrangian velocity statistics in a canopy flow, which is observed in two distinct forms. The first, small scale intermittency, is expressed by non-Gaussian and not self-similar statistics of the velocity increments. The analysis shows an agreement in comparison with previous results from homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) using the multifractal model, extended se…

Understanding rare events in turbulence provides a basis for the science of extreme weather, for which the atmosphere is modeled by Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs). In solutions of NSEs for isotropic fluids, various quantities, such as fluid velocities, roughly follow Gaussian distributions, where extreme events are prominent only in small-scale quantities associated with the dissipation-dominating length scale or anomalous scaling regime. Using numerical simulations, this study reveals another universal promotion mechanism at much larger scales if three-dimensional fluids accompany strong two-…
We study intermittency of circulation moments in turbulent superfluid helium by using experimental grid turbulence and numerical simulations of the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov model. More precisely, we compute the velocity circulation $Γ_r$ in loops of size $r$ laying in the inertial range. For both, experimental and numerical data, the circulation variance shows a clear Kolmogorov scaling $\langle Γ_r^2 \rangle \sim r^{8/3}$ in the inertial range, independently of the temperature. Scaling exponents of high-order moments are comparable, within error bars, to previously reported anomalous…
The understanding of turbulent flows is one of the biggest current challenges in physics, as no first-principles theory exists to explain their observed spatio-temporal intermittency. Turbulent flows may be regarded as an intricate collection of mutually-interacting vortices. This picture becomes accurate in quantum turbulence, which is built on tangles of discrete vortex filaments. Here, we study the statistics of velocity circulation in quantum and classical turbulence. We show that, in quantum flows, Kolmogorov turbulence emerges from the correlation of vortex orientations, while deviations…
This investigation presents evidence of the relation between the dynamics of intense events in small-scale turbulence and the energy cascade. We use the generalised (Hölder) means to track the temporal evolution of intense events of the enstrophy and the dissipation in direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. We show that these events are modulated by large-scale fluctuations, and that their evolution is consistent with a local multiplicative cascade, as hypothesised by a broad class of intermittency models of turbulence.

We investigate the ability of 4D Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements at high particle density to explore intermittency and irreversibility in a turbulent swirling flow at various Reynolds numbers. For this, we devise suitable tools to remove the experimental noise, and compute the statistics of both Lagrangian velocity increments and wavelet coefficients of the Lagrangian power (the time derivative of the kinetic energy along a trajectory). We show that the signature of noise is strongest on short trajectories, and results in deviations from the regularity condition at small time scales…

Direct numerical simulations of the forced Navier-Stokes equations were performed, in which each shell-averaged quantity evolved from a value appropriate to an initial Gaussian state, to fluctuate about a mean value. Once the transient had passed, mean values (and their associated statistics) were obtained by sampling the evolved time-series at intervals of the order of an eddy-turnover time. This was repeated for a range of Taylor-Reynolds numbers from 10.6 to 335.2. With increasing Reynolds number, our results for energy spectra, transfer spectra and inertial flux supported the Kolmogorov-Ob…
Large-scale intermittency is a widely observed phenomenon in convective surface layer turbulence that induces non-Gaussian temperature statistics, while such signature is not observed for velocity signals. Although approaches based on probability density functions have been used so far, those are not able to explain to what extent the signals' temporal structure impacts the statistical characteristics of the velocity and temperature fluctuations. To tackle this issue, a visibility network analysis is carried out on a field-experimental dataset from a convective atmospheric surface layer flow. …
Non-Gaussian statistics of large-scale fields are routinely observed in data from atmospheric and oceanic campaigns and global models. Recent direct numerical simulations (DNSs) showed that large-scale intermittency in stably stratified flows is due to the emergence of sporadic, extreme events in the form of bursts in the vertical velocity and the temperature. This phenomenon results from the interplay between waves and turbulent motions, affecting mixing. We provide evidence of the enhancement of the classical small-scale (or internal) intermittency due to the emergence of large-scale drafts,…

We investigate the statistics of turbulence in emulsions of two-immiscible fluids of same density. We compute for the first time velocity increments between points conditioned to be located in the same phase or in different phases and examine their probability density functions (PDF) and the associated structure functions (SF). This enables us to demonstrate that the the presence of the interface reduces the skewness of the PDF at scales below the Kolmogorov-Hinze scale and therefore the magnitude of the energy flux towards the dissipative scales, which is quantified by the third-order SF. The…
