The transition of the flow in a duct of square cross-section is studied. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers; this flow is thus a good candidate to investigate the 'bypass' path to turbulence. Initially the so-called 'linear optimal perturbation problem' is formulated and solved, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices. Such optimals, however, fail to elicit a significant response from the system in the nonlinear regime. Thus, streamwise-inhomogeneous, sub-optimal disturbances are focussed upon; nonlinear quadratic interactions are immediately evoked by such initial perturbations and an unstable streamwise-homogeneous large amplitude mode rapidly emerges. The subsequent evolution of the flow, at a value of the Reynolds number at the edge between fully developed turbulence and relaminarization, shows the alternance of patterns with two pairs of large scale vortices near opposing parallel walls. Such edge states bear a resemblance to optimal disturbances
Decay of honeycomb-generated turbulence in a duct with a static transverse magnetic field is studied via direct numerical simulations. The simulations follow the revealing experimental study of Sukoriansky et al. (1986), in particular the paradoxical observation of high-amplitude velocity fluctuations, which exist in the downstream portion of the flow when the strong transverse magnetic field is imposed in the entire duct including the honeycomb exit, but not in other configurations. It is shown that the fluctuations are caused by the large-scale quasi-two-dimensional structures forming in the…
We present numerically determined travelling-wave solutions for pressure-driven flow through a straight duct with a square cross-section. This family of solutions represents typical coherent structures (a staggered array of counter-rotating streamwise vortices and an associated low-speed streak) on each wall. Their streamwise average flow in the cross-sectional plane corresponds to an eight vortex pattern much alike the secondary flow found in the turbulent regime.
We study turbulent flows in pressure-driven ducts with square cross-section through direct numerical simulation in a wide enough range of Reynolds number to reach flow conditions which are representative of fully developed turbulence. Numerical simulations are carried out over extremely long integration times to get adequate convergence of the flow statistics, and specifically high-fidelity representation of the secondary motions which arise. The intensity of the latter is found to be in the order of 1-2% of the bulk velocity, and unaffected by Reynolds number variations. The smallness of the …
In this paper we study the ductile breakup of tracer aggregates in an incompressible, homogeneous, and isotropic three-dimensional turbulent flow. The flow dynamics is studied by means of a direct numerical simulation, whereas the Lagrangian velocities and stress statistics along trajectories are obtained by particle tracking. We investigate the breakup dynamics under the hypothesis that aggregates are able to deform and accumulate energy. Within this framework, breakup occurs when the energy transferred to the aggregate by the flow exceeds a critical value. We contrast our predictions for duc…
The stratified inclined duct (SID) sustains an exchange flow in a long, gently sloping duct as a model for continuously-forced density-stratified flows such as those found in estuaries. Experiments have shown that the emergence of interfacial waves and their transition to turbulence as the tilt angle is increased appears linked to a threshold in the exchange flow rate given by inviscid two-layer hydraulics. We uncover these hydraulic mechanisms with (i) recent direct numerical simulations (DNS) providing full flow data in the key flow regimes (Zhu & Atoufi et al., arXiv:2301.09773, 2023), (ii)…
We present the analytical solution for the two-dimensional velocity and density fields within an approximation for laminar stratified inclined duct (SID) flows where diffusion dominates over inertia in the along-channel momentum equation but it is negligible in the density transport equation. We refer to this approximation as the hydrostatic/gravitational/viscous in momentum and advective in density (HGV-A) approximation due to the leading balances in the governing equations. The analytical solution is valid for laminar flows in a two-layer configuration in the limit of long ducts. Under such …
The paper presents 3D numerical results for the laminar liquid metal flow in a rectangular duct compared with experimental results. It is shown that the magnetic interaction parameter $N$ is the main parameter governing the flow provided turbulent pulsations are locally suppressed by magnetic field.
We report on a numerical study of axisymmetric flow of liquid metal in a circular duct with rectangular cross-section. The flow is forced through the combination of an axial magnetic field and a radial current. Sweeping a wide range of forcing parameters, we identify the different regimes which characterize the flows and explicit the associate scaling laws. Experimental results are interpreted in the light of our numerical simulations.
The dynamics of dilute micron-sized spherical inertial particles in turbulent duct flows is studied by means of direct numerical simulations of the carrier phase turbulence with one-way coupled Lagrangian particles. The geometries are a square and a rectangular duct with width-to-height aspect ratio $AR$ of 3 operating at $Re_{τ,c}=360$ . The present study is designed to determine the effect of turbulence-driven secondary motion on the particle dynamics. Our results show that a weak cross-flow secondary motion significantly changes the cross-sectional map of the particle concentration, mean ve…
The paper examines the impact of different modelling choices in second-moment closures by assessing model performance in predicting 3-D duct flows. The test-cases (developing flow in a square duct [Gessner F.B., Emery A.F.: {\em ASME J. A conservative coupled finite difference-boundary element computational procedure for the simulation of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic flow in a straight rectangular duct at finite magnetic Reynolds number is presented. The flow is assumed to be periodic in the streamwise direction and is driven by a mean pressure gradient. The duct walls are considered to be electrically insulating. The co-evolution of the velocity and magnetic fields as described respectively by the Navier-Stokes and the magnetic induction equations, together with the coupling of the magnetic field between the conducting doma…
The downward flow in a vertical duct with one heated and three thermally insulated walls is analyzed numerically using the two-dimensional approximation valid in the asymptotic limit of an imposed strong transverse magnetic field. The work is motivated by the design of liquid metal blankets with poloidal ducts for future nuclear fusion reactors, in which the main component of the magnetic field is perpendicular to the flow direction and very strong heating is applied at the wall facing the reaction chamber. The flow is found to be steady-state or oscillating depending on the strengths of the h…
We study the inertial migration of finite-size neutrally buoyant spherical particles in dilute and semi-dilute suspensions in laminar square duct flow. We perform several direct numerical simulations using an immersed boundary method to investigate the effects of the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$, particle Reynolds number $Re_p$ and duct to particle size ratio $h/a$ at different solid volume fractions $ϕ$, from very dilute conditions to $20\%$. We show that the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$ is the key parameter in inertial migration of particles in dilute suspensions. At low solid volume fraction …
We have performed direct numerical simulation of the turbulent flow of a polymer solution in a square duct, with the FENE-P model used to simulate the presence of polymers. First, a simulation at a fixed moderate Reynolds number is performed and its results compared with those of a Newtonian fluid to understand the mechanism of drag reduction and how the secondary motion, typical of the turbulent flow in non-axisymmetric ducts, is affected by polymer additives. Our study shows that the Prandtl's secondary flow is modified by the polymers: the circulation of the streamwise main vortices increas…
In this paper, we present the results of a numerical study of air-water turbulent bubbly flow in a periodic vertical square duct. The study is conducted using a novel numerical technique which leverages Volume of Fluid method for interface capturing and Sharp Surface Force method for accurate representation of the surface tension forces. A three-dimensional geometry construction method is employed during solution of interface equation which gives absolute conservation of mass and sharp interface between gas and liquid phases. The entire algorithm has been implemented on a data parallel mode on…
It is of special interest in some conventional chemical technologies to provide either fast mixing of reagents or rapid quenching of final chemical product. One of most promising techniques to achieve it is mixing of multiple jets radially injected in crossflow (JIC) of cylindrical duct when jets impinge and form a jet flowing towards a crossflow. As result of an interaction of counter-flowing jet and confined crossflow, a recirculation flow zone (RFZ) upstream of jets injection plane (JIP) is formed (see Fig.1). Of valuable importance is to reveal upstream behavior of developed counter-flowin…
We carry out direct numerical simulation of compressible square duct flow in the range of bulk Mach numbers M_b = 0.2-3, and up to friction Reynolds number Re_τ = 500. The effects of flow compressibility on the secondary motions are found to be negligible, as the typical Mach number associated with the cross-stream flow is always less than 0.1. As in the incompressible case, we find that the wall law for the mean streamwise velocity applies with good approximation with respect to the nearest wall, upon suitable compressibility transformation. The same conclusion also applies to a passive scala…
This work applies resolvent analysis to incompressible flow through a rectangular duct, in order to identify dominant linear energy-amplification mechanisms present in such flows. In particular, we formulate the resolvent operator from linearizing the Navier--Stokes equations about a two-dimensional base/mean flow. The laminar base flow only has a nonzero streamwise velocity component, while the turbulent case exhibits a secondary mean flow (Prandtl's secondary flow of the second kind). A singular value decomposition of the resolvent operator allows for the identification of structures corresp…
We carry out Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of flows in closed rectangular ducts with several aspect ratios. The Navier-Stokes equations are discretized through a second-order finite difference scheme, with non-uniform grids in two directions. The duct cross-sectional area is maintained constant as well as the flow rate, which allows to investigate which is the appropriate length scale in the Reynolds number for a good scaling in the laminar and in the fully turbulent regimes. We find that the Reynolds number based on the half length of the short side leads to a critical Reynolds number whi…
We study the experimental properties of exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are simultaneously turbulent, strongly stratified by a mean vertical density gradient, driven by a mean vertical shear, and continuously forced by gravity. We focus on the core shear layer away from the duct walls, where these flows are excellent experimentally-realisable approximations of canonical hyperbolic-tangent stratified shear layers, whose forcing allows mean and turbulent properties to reach quasi steady states. We analyse state-of-the-art data sets of the time-resolved density and veloc…
We study the turbulent square duct flow of dense suspensions of neutrally-buoyant spherical particles. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed in the range of volume fractions $ϕ=0-0.2$, using the immersed boundary method (IBM) to account for the dispersed phase. Based on the hydraulic diameter a Reynolds number of $5600$ is considered. We report flow features and particle statistics specific to this geometry, and compare the results to the case of two-dimensional channel flows. In particular, we observe that for $ϕ=0.05$ and $0.1$, particles preferentially accumulate on the corner bi…
Several deterministic and stochastic multi-variable global optimization algorithms (Conjugate Gradient, Nelder-Mead, Quasi-Newton, and Global) are investigated in conjunction with energy minimization principle to resolve the pressure and volumetric flow rate fields in single ducts and networks of interconnected ducts. The algorithms are tested with seven types of fluid: Newtonian, power law, Bingham, Herschel-Bulkley, Ellis, Ree-Eyring and Casson. The results obtained from all those algorithms for all these types of fluid agree very well with the analytically derived solutions as obtained from…
The present paper is an attempt to demonstrate how the energy minimization principle may be considered as a governing rule for the physical equilibrium that determines the flow fields in tubes and networks. We previously investigated this issue using a numerical stochastic method, specifically simulated annealing, where we demonstrated the problem by some illuminating examples and concluded that energy minimization principle can be a valid hypothesis. The investigation in this paper is more general as it is based to a certain extent on an analytical approach.
Turbofan engine performance depends highly on the characteristics and conditions of the inlet flow. Swirl distortions, caused by non-uniformities in flows arising from boundary layer or ground/fuselage vortex ingestion are of concern and need to be fully understood to guarantee efficiency and safety of propulsion systems. To investigate a fundamental single-vortex distortion development in a duct at different Reynolds numbers, a StreamVane distortion generating device was designed and experimentally analyzed in a small-scale low-speed wind tunnel (ReD 500,000) and in a full-scale engine testin…
The aim of the present work is to investigate the role of coherent structures in the generation of the secondary flow in a turbulent square duct. The coherent structures are defined as connected regions of flow where the product of the instantaneous fluctuations of two velocity components is higher than a threshold based on the long-time turbulence statistics, in the spirit of the three-dimensional quadrant analysis proposed by Lozano-Durán et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 694, 2012, pp. 100-130). We consider both the direct contribution of the structures to the mean in-plane velocity components a…
We experimentally investigate the influence of finite-size spherical particles in turbulent flows of a Newtonian and a drag reducing viscoelastic fluid at varying particle volume fractions and fixed Reynolds number. Experiments are performed in a square duct at a Reynolds number $Re_{2H}$ of nearly $1.1\times10^4$, Weissenberg number $Wi$ for single-phase flow is between 1-2 and results in a drag-reduction of 43% compared to a Newtonian flow (at the same $Re_{2H}$). Particles are almost neutrally-buoyant hydrogel spheres having a density ratio of 1.0035$\pm$0.0003 and a duct height ${2H}$ to p…
Solid particles can be transported as a mobile granular bed, known as bed-load, by pressure-driven flows. A common case in industry is the presence of bed-load in stratified gas-liquid flows in horizontal ducts. In this case, an initially flat granular bed may be unstable, generating ripples and dunes. This three-phase flow, although complex, can be modeled under some simplifying assumptions. This paper presents a model for the estimation of some bed-load characteristics. Based on parameters easily measurable in industry, the model can predict the local bed-load flow rates and the celerity and…

The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations require accurate modeling of the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor. Traditional closure models, while sophisticated, often only apply to restricted flow configurations. Researchers have started using machine learning approaches to tackle this problem by developing more general closure models informed by data. In this work we build upon recent convolutional neural network architectures used for turbulence modeling and propose a multi-task learning-based fully convolutional neural network that is able to accurately predict the normalized anis…
The linear stability of stratified two-phase flows in rectangular ducts is studied numerically. The linear stability analysis takes into account all possible infinitesimal three-dimensional disturbances and is carried out by solution of the associated eigenproblem. The neutral stability boundary and the corresponding critical wave number are obtained for liquid - liquid and air - water systems. Depending on the problem parameters, the instability sets in owing to short, intermediate, of long wave most unstable perturbations. Patterns of the most unstable disturbances are reported and discussed…
The stability of a three-dimensional, incompressible, viscous flow through a finite-length duct is studied. A divergence-free basis technique is used to formulate the weak form of the problem. A SUPG (streamingline upwind Petrov-Galerkin) based scheme for eigenvalue problems is proposed to stabilize the solution. With proper boundary condtions, the least-stable eigenmodes and decay rates are computed. It is again found that the flows are asymptotically stable for all $Re$ up to $2500$. It is discovered that the least-stable eigenmodes have a boundary-layer-structure at high $Re$, although the …
This paper is concerned with the transition of the laminar flow in a duct of square cross-section. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers, rendering this flow a suitable candidate for a study of the 'bypass' path to turbulence. It has already been shown \citep{Biau_JFM_2008} that the classical linear optimal perturbation problem, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices, fails to provide an 'optimal' path to turbulence, i.e. optimal perturbations do not elicit a significant nonlinear response from the flow. Pr…
We use a direct numerical simulations (DNS) database for turbulent flow in a square duct up to bulk Reynolds number $\Rey_b=40000$, to quantitatively analyze the role of secondary motions on the mean flow structure. For that purpose we derive a generalized form of the identity of Fukagata, Iwamoto and Kasagi (FIK), which allows to quantify the effect of cross-stream convection on the mean streamwise velocity, wall shear stress and bulk friction coefficient. Secondary motions are found to contribute for about $6\%$ of total friction, and to act as a self-regulating mechanism of turbulence where…
The flow transformation and the generation of vortex structures by a strong magnetic dipole field in a liquid metal duct flow is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The dipole is considered as the paradigm for a magnetic obstacle which will deviate the streamlines due to Lorentz forces acting on the fluid elements. The duct is of square cross-section. The dipole is located above the top wall and is centered in spanwise direction. Our model uses the quasi-static approximation which is applicable in the limit of small magnetic Reynolds numbers. The analysis covers…
We present a minimal model of an incompressible flow in square duct subject to a slight curvature. Using a Poincaré-like section we identify stationary, periodic, aperiodic and chaotic regimes, depending on the unique control parameter of the problem: the Dean number (De). Aside from representing a simple, yet rich, dynamical system the present simplified model is also representative of the full problem, reproducing quite accurately the bifurcation points observed in the literature. We analyse the bifurcation diagram from De = 0 (no curvature) to De = 500, observing a periodic segment followed…
With flow, the acoustical effect of a lined wall cannot be described by a single quantity like the wall impedance. At least two quantities are required. In addition to the impedance, the unsteady tangential force exerted by the wall on the flow has to be taken into account. This force is due either to viscous effects or to the unsteady transfer of axial momentum from the flow into the lined wall. The paper describes a Stress--Impedance model where the two variables used are the impedance and the friction factor that links the pressure to a tangential stress at the wall. The use of a wall stres…
In ducts with varying cross-sectional area and sustaining a subsonic non-isentropic mean flow, the axially varying flow conditions affect the acoustic energy balance of the system. This is significant in understanding and controlling thermo-acoustic phenomena, particularly in combustors. This work aims at quantifying the acoustic energy change in such configurations, using the acoustic absorption coefficient, $Δ$. The acoustic response of the duct to acoustic forcing is determined using an analytical model, neglecting the effect of entropy fluctuations on the acoustic field, and subsequently, …
This study is concerned with numerical linear stability analysis of liquid metal flow in a square duct with thin electrically conducting walls subject to a uniform transverse magnetic field. We derive an asymptotic solution for the base flow which is valid not only for high but also moderate magnetic fields. This solution shows that for low wall conductance ratios $c\ll1,$ an extremely strong magnetic field with the Hartmann number $Ha\sim c^{-4}$ is required to attain the asymptotic flow regime considered in the previous studies. We use a vector stream function/vorticity formulation and a Che…
Direct numerical simulations and linear stability analysis are carried out to study mixed convection in a horizontal duct with constant-rate heating applied at the bottom and imposed transverse horizontal magnetic field. A two-dimensional approximation corresponding to the asymptotic limit of very strong magnetic field effect is validated and applied, together with full three-dimensional analysis, to investigate the flow's behaviour in the previously unexplored range of control parameters corresponding to typical conditions of a liquid metal blanket of a nuclear fusion reactor (Hartmann number…
In this Part 2 we study further experimental properties of two-layer exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are turbulent, strongly-stratified, shear-driven, and continuously-forced. We analyse the same state-of-the-art data sets using the same core shear layer methodology as in Part 1, but we focus here on turbulent energetics and mixing statistics. The detailed analysis of kinetic and scalar energy budgets reveals the specificity and scalings of SID turbulence, while energy spectra provide insight into the current strengths and limitations of our experimental data. The ani…
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) have been employed to investigate the dynamics of finite-size spherical particles, slightly heavier than the carrier fluid, in a horizontal turbulent square duct flow. Interface resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have also been performed with the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) at the same experimental conditions, bulk Reynolds number $Re_{2H}$ = 5600, duct height to particle size ratio $2H/d_p$ = 14.5, particle volume fraction $Φ$ = 1% and particle to fluid density ratio $ρ_p/ρ_f$ = 1.0035. A good agreement has b…
We report on direct numerical simulations of the effect of electrostatic charges on particle-laden duct flows. The corresponding electrostatic forces are known to affect particle dynamics at small scales and the associated turbophoretic drift. Our simulations, however, predicted that electrostatic forces also dominate the vortical motion of the particles, induced by the secondary flows of Prandtl's second kind of the carrier fluid. Herein we treated flows at two frictional Reynolds numbers ($Re_\mathrmτ=$ 300 and~600), two particle-to-gas density ratios ($ρ_\mathrm{p}/ρ=$ 1000 and 7500), and t…
