In this paper, we use the "complexity equals action" (CA) conjecture to explore the switchback effect in the strongly-coupled quantum field theories with finite $N$ and finite coupling effects. In the perspective of holography, this is equivalent to evaluating the CA complexity in a Vaidya geometry equipped with a light shockwave for a higher curvature gravitational theory. Based on the Noether charge formalism of Iyer and Wald, we obtain the slope of the complexity of formation in the small and large time approximations. By circuit analogy, we show that our results concur with the switchback effect of the quantum system. These results show that the switchback effect is a general feature of the CA complexity in stationary black holes and its existence is independent of the explicit gravitational theory as well as spacetime background. From the viewpoint of AdS/CFT, this also implies that the switchback effect is a general feature of the thermofield double state in the strongly-coupled quantum field systems with finite $N$ and finite coupling effects. Moreover, we also illustrate that unlike the late-time complexity growth rate, the counterterm plays an important role in the study of the switchback effect.
There are several different proposals, relating holographic complexity to the gravitational objects defined on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of complexity following a global quantum quench for these proposals. We find that surprisingly they all reproduce known properties of complexity, such as the switchback effect. However, each of these proposals also has its own characteristic features during the dynamical evolution, which may serve as a powerful tool to distinguish the various holographic duals of complexity.

In this paper, we use the "complexity equals action" (CA) conjecture to discuss growth rate of the complexity in a charged AdS-Vaidya black hole formed by collapsing an uncharged spherically symmetric thin shell of null fluid. Using the approach proposed by Lehner $et\, al.$, we evaluate the action growth rate and the slope of the complexity of formation. Then, we demonstrate that the behaviors of them are in agreement with the switchback effect for the light shock wave case. Moreover, we show that to obtain an expected property of the complexity, it is also necessary for the CA conjecture to …
In this second part of the study initiated in arxiv:1804.07410, we investigate holographic complexity for eternal black hole backgrounds perturbed by shock waves, with both the complexity$=$action (CA) and complexity$=$volume (CV) proposals. In particular, we consider Vaidya geometries describing a thin shell of null fluid with arbitrary energy falling in from one of the boundaries of a two-sided AdS-Schwarzschild spacetime. We demonstrate how known properties of complexity, such as the switchback effect for light shocks, as well as analogous properties for heavy ones, are imprinted in the com…
We study the planar anti-de Sitter black hole in the p-wave holographic superconductor model. We identify a critical coupling value which determines the type of phase transition. Beyond the horizon, at specific temperatures flat spacetime emerges. Numerical analysis close to these temperatures demonstrates the appearance of a large number of alternating Kasner epochs.
When a black hole forms from collapse in a holographic theory, the information in the black hole interior remains encoded in the boundary. We prove that the area of the black hole's apparent horizon is precisely the entropy associated to coarse graining over the information in its interior, subject to knowing the exterior geometry. This is the maximum holographic entanglement entropy that is compatible with all classical measurements conducted outside of the apparent horizon. We identify the boundary dual to this entropy and explain why it obeys a Second Law of Thermodynamics.
We investigate a stress-energy tensor for a CFT at strong coupling inside a small five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta by using the holographic method. As a gravitational dual, we perturbatively construct a black droplet solution by applying the "derivative expansion" method, generalizing the work of Haddad (arXiv:1207.2305), and analytically compute the holographic stress-energy tensor for our solution. We find that the stress-energy tensor is finite at both the future and past outer (event) horizons, and that the energy density is negative just outside …
We prove a new, large family of area laws in general relativity, which apply to certain classes of untrapped surfaces that we dub generalized holographic screens. Our family of area laws contains, as special cases, the area laws for marginally-trapped surfaces (holographic screens) and the event horizon (Hawking's area theorem). In addition to these results in general relativity, we show that in the context of holography the geometry of a generalized holographic screen is related to the outer entropy of the screen. Specifically, we show for spherically-symmetric spacetimes that the area of the…
We propose a holographic map between Einstein gravity coupled to matter in a de Sitter background and large N quantum mechanics of a system of spins. Holography maps a spin model with a finite dimensional Hilbert space defined on a version of the stretched horizon into bulk gravitational dynamics. The full Hamiltonian of the spin model contains a non-local piece which generates chaotic dynamics, widely conjectured to be a necessary part of quantum gravity, and a local piece which recovers the perturbative spectrum in the bulk.
In this work we consider a general function for the $c^{2}$ term that appears in the conventional expression for the holographic dark energy in a FLRW curved spacetime. The cut-off prospective is inspired in the apparent horizon length. By exploring the slowly varying condition for the $c^{2}$ term, we obtain a range of validity for this holographic proposal. Under these considerations can be found that this holographic cut-off is adequate to describe the late cosmic evolution. Additionally, by considering some values constrained with the use of observational data for some cosmological paramet…
We consider the fluid dual of $(d+2)$-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation either with or without a cosmological constant. The background solutions admit black hole event horizons and the spatial sections of the horizons are conformally flat. Therefore, a $d$-dimensional flat Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is contained in the conformal class of the spatial section of the black hole horizon. A compressible, forced, stationary and viscous fluid system can be constructed on the product (Newtonian) spacetime $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{E}^d$ as the lowest order fluctuation modes around such black hol…
An important conjecture within the AdS/CFT correspondence relates holographic spacetime to the quantum computational complexity of the dual quantum field theory. However, the quantitative understanding of this relation is still an open question. In this work, we introduce and study a map between a computational complexity measure and its holographic counterpart from first principles. We consider quantum circuits built out of conformal transformations in two-dimensional conformal field theory and a complexity measure based on assigning a cost to quantum gates via the Fubini-Study distance. We f…
We obtain the holographic complexity of an evaporating black hole in the semi-classical RST model of two-dimensional dilaton gravity, using a volume prescription that takes into account the higher-dimensional origin of the model. For classical black holes, we recover the expected late time behaviour of the complexity, but new features arise at the semi-classical level. By considering the volume inside the stretched horizon of the evolving black hole, we obtain sensible results for the rate of growth of the complexity, with an early onset of order the black hole scrambling time followed by an e…
We compute the length of spacelike geodesics anchored at opposite sides of certain double-sided flow geometries in two dimensions. These geometries are asymptotically anti-de Sitter but they admit either a de Sitter or a black hole event horizon in the interior. While in the geometries with black hole horizons, the geodesic length always exhibit linear growth at late times, in the flow geometries with de Sitter horizons, geodesics with finite length only exist for short times of the order of the inverse temperature and they do not exhibit linear growth. We comment on the implications of these …
We explore asymptotically AdS$_2$ solutions of a particular two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theory. In the deep interior, these solutions flow to the cosmological horizon of dS$_2$. We calculate various matter perturbations at the linearised and non-linear level. We consider both Euclidean and Lorentzian perturbations. The results can be used to characterise the features of a putative dual quantum mechanics. The chaotic nature of the de Sitter horizon is assessed through the soft mode action at the AdS$_2$ boundary, as well as the behaviour of shockwave type solutions.
Using "complexity=action" proposal we study the late time growth rate of holographic complexity for nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole with a single horizon or two horizons. As a toy model, we consider two kinds of such black holes: nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole and nonlinear logarithmic charged Lifshitz black hole. We find that for the black hole with two horizons, the action growth bound is satisfied. But for the black hole with a single horizon, whether the Lloyd bound is violated depends on the specific value of dimensionless coupling constants $β_{1},β_{2}$, spacetime dimension…
We study the holographic complexity of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity using the recently proposed "complexity = volume" and "complexity = action" dualities. The model we consider has a ground state that is represented in the bulk via a so-called hyperscaling violating geometry. We calculate the action growth of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch of the corresponding black hole solution at non-zero temperature and find that, in the presence of violations of hyperscaling, there is a parametric enhancement of the action growth rate. We partially match this behavior to simple tensor network models which c…
We revisit the complexity$=$action proposal for charged black holes. We investigate the complexity for a dyonic black hole, and we find the surprising feature that the late-time growth is sensitive to the ratio between electric and magnetic charges. In particular, the late-time growth rate vanishes when the black hole carries only a magnetic charge. If the dyonic black hole is perturbed by a light shock wave, a similar feature appears for the switchback effect, e.g., it is absent for purely magnetic black holes. We then show how the inclusion of a surface term to the action can put the electri…
Membrane paradigm is a powerful tool to study properties of black hole horizons. We first explore the properties of the nonlinear electromagnetic membrane of black holes. For a general nonlinear electrodynamics field, we show that the conductivities of the horizon usually have off-diagonal components and depend on the normal electric and magnetic fields on the horizon. Via the holographic duality, we find a model-independent expression for the holographic DC conductivities of the conserved current dual to a probe nonlinear electrodynamics field in a neutral and static black brane background. I…
The extended holographic dark energy model with the Hubble horizon as the infrared cutoff avoids the problem of the circular reasoning of the holographic dark energy model. Unfortunately, it is hit with the no-go theorem. In this paper, we consider the extended holographic dark energy model with a potential, $V(ϕ)$, for the Brans-Dicke scalar field. With the addition of a potential for the Brans-Dicke scalar field, the extended holographic dark energy model using the Hubble horizon as the infrared cutoff is a viable dark energy model, and the model has the dark energy dominated attractor solut…
We study the inner horizons of rotating and charged black holes in anti-de Sitter space. These black holes have a classical analytic extension through the inner horizon to additional asymptotic regions. If this extension survives in the quantum theory, it requires particular analytic properties in a dual CFT, which give a prescription for calculating correlation functions for operators placed on any asymptotic boundary of the maximally extended spacetime. We show that for charged black holes in three or greater dimensions, and rotating black holes in four or greater dimensions, these analytic …
We use the causal horizon entropy to study the asymptotic behaviors of regular AdS black holes. In some literature, the causal horizon entropy is regarded as a generalized holographic $c$-function. In this paper, we apply this idea to the case of regular AdS black holes. We show that the causal horizon entropy decreases to zero at the center of regular AdS black holes and in particular it is stationary because its derivative with respect to the affine parameter approaches zero asymptotically. Meanwhile, the asymptotic behavior of the metric of regular AdS black holes implies that the black hol…
We explore a new class of general properties of thermal holographic Green's functions that can be deduced from the near-horizon behaviour of classical perturbations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that at negative imaginary Matsubara frequencies and appropriate complex values of the wavenumber the retarded Green's functions of generic operators are not uniquely defined, due to the lack of a unique ingoing solution for the bulk perturbations. From a boundary perspective these `pole-skipping' points correspond to locations in the complex frequency and momentum planes at whic…
We show that holographic RG flow can be defined precisely such that it corresponds to emergence of spacetime. We consider the case of pure Einstein's gravity with a negative cosmological constant in the dual hydrodynamic regime. The holographic RG flow is a system of first order differential equations for radial evolution of the energy-momentum tensor and the variables which parametrize it's phenomenological form on hypersurfaces in a foliation. The RG flow can be constructed without explicit knowledge of the bulk metric provided the hypersurface foliation is of a special kind. The bulk metric…
The vorticity statistics characterises both the direct and the inverse turbulent cascades of two-dimensional fluid flows. The fluid/gravity correspondence relates fluid flows to black brane dynamics. We construct the holographic vorticity for relativistic and non-relativistic fluids in terms of the gravitational black brane data, and relate it to the horizon vorticity expressed as a Weyl scalar. We discuss the statistical scaling structure of the horizon geometry.
A modern version of the idea that the area of event horizons gives $4G$ times an entropy is the Hubeny-Rangamani Causal Holographic Information (CHI) proposal for holographic field theories. Given a region $R$ of a holographic QFTs, CHI computes $A/4G$ on a certain cut of an event horizon in the gravitational dual. The result is naturally interpreted as a coarse-grained entropy for the QFT. CHI is known to be finitely greater than the fine-grained Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) entropy when $\partial R$ lies on a Killing horizon of the QFT spacetime, and in this context satisfies other non-…
This article is dedicated to establishing a novel approach to the cosmological constant, in which it is treated as an eigenvalue of a certain Sturm--Liouville problem. The key to this approach lies in the proper formulation of physically relevant boundary conditions. Our suggestion in this regard is to utilize the ``holographic boundary condition'', under which the cosmological horizon can only bear a natural (i.e., non-fractional) number of bits of information. Under this framework, we study the general d-dimensional problem and derive the general formula for the discrete spectrum of a positi…
We examine the averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for strongly coupled fields, along the event horizon of an evaporating black hole by using the AdS/CFT duality. First, we consider a holographic model of a $3$-dimensional evaporating black hole with a perturbed 4-dimensional black droplet geometry as the bulk dual, and investigate how negative energy flux going into the boundary black hole horizon appears. We show that the ingoing negative energy flux always appears at the boundary black hole horizon when the horizon area decreases. Second, we test the ANEC in a holographic model of a $4$-d…
In a Rindler-type coordinate system spanned in a region outside of a black hole horizon, we have nonvanishing classical holographic charges as soft hairs on the horizon for stationary black holes. Taking a large black hole mass limit, the spacetimes with the charges are described by asymptotic Rindler metrics. We construct a general theory of gravitational holographic charges for a (1+3)-dimensional linearized gravity field in the Minkowski background with Rindler horizons. Although matter crossing a Rindler horizon causes horizon deformation and a time-dependent coordinate shift, that is, gra…
We explore use of the harmonic Einstein equations to numerically find stationary black holes where the problem is posed on an ingoing slice that extends into the interior of the black hole. Requiring no boundary conditions at the horizon beyond smoothness of the metric, this method may be applied for horizons that are not Killing. As a non-trivial illustration we find black holes which, via AdS-CFT, describe a time-independent CFT plasma flowing through a static spacetime which asymptotes to Minkowski in the flow's past and future, with a varying spatial geometry in-between. These are the firs…
The thermodynamics of a scheme of dark matter-dark energy interaction is studied considering a holographic model for the dark energy in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson- Walker background. We obtain a total entropy rate for a general horizon and we study the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics for a cosmological interaction as a free function. Additionally, we discuss two horizons related to the Ricci and Ricci-like model and its effect on an interacting system.
We give a holographic argument in favor of the AdS Penrose inequality, which conjectures a lower bound on the total mass in terms of the area of apparent horizons. This inequality is often viewed as a test of cosmic censorship. We further find a connection between the area law for apparent horizons and the Penrose inequality. Finally, we show that the argument also applies to solutions with charge, resulting in a charged Penrose inequality in AdS.
In this paper, we briefly review the holographic dark energy model and introduce the idea that dark energy is a kind of thermal energy related to the quantum entanglement of the vacuum across a cosmic future event horizon. The holographic dark energy model comes from a theoretical attempt to apply the holographic principle to the dark energy problem and follows the idea that the short distance cut-off or ultraviolet (UV) cut-off is related to the long distance cut-off or infrared (IR) cut-off. The IR cut-off relevant to dark energy is the size of the future event horizon. This model gives a ho…
It is shown that the Verlinde formula for the entropy variation of a holographic screen is a consequence of the conversion of the particle energy in horizon energy. The special role played by the particular displacement $Δx = c^{2}/a$ is emphasized, $a$ being the particle acceleration. Using the Heisenberg Principle we show that the energy on the causal horizon (viewed as a holographic screen) of an inertial observer is proportional to its radius, as for a black hole.
We introduce the isothermal cavity, static holographic screen, and accelerating surface as holographic screen to study the entropic force in the presence of the Schwarzschild black hole. These may merge to provide a consistent holographic screen to define the entropic force on the stretched horizon near the event horizon. Considering the similarity between the stretched horizon of black hole and the entanglement system, we may define the entropic force in the entanglement system without referring the source mass.
We analyze the dynamics of a four-dimensional null hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with Einstein-Yang-Mills fields. In an appropriate ansatz, the projection of the field equations onto the hypersurface takes the form of conservation laws for relativistic hydrodynamics with global non-abelian charges. A Chern-Simons term in the bulk action corresponds to anomalies in the global charges, with a vorticity term arising in the hydrodynamics. We derive the entropy current and obtain unique expressions for some of the leading-order transport coefficients (in the abelian case, all of…
We study a cosmological implication of holographic dark energy in the Brans-Dicke gravity. We employ the holographic model of dark energy to obtain the equation of state for the holographic energy density in non-flat (closed) universe enclosed by the event horizon measured from the sphere of horizon named $L$. Our analysis shows that one can obtain the phantom crossing scenario if the model parameter $α$ (of order unity) is tuned accordingly. Moreover, this behavior is achieved by treating the Brans-Dicke scalar field as a Chameleon scalar field and taking a non-minimal coupling of the scalar …
We revisit our investigation of the claim of [1] that old black holes contain a firewall, i.e. an in-falling observer encounters highly excited states at a time much shorter than the light crossing time of the Schwarzschild radius. We used the formalism of Holographic Space-time (HST) where there is no dramatic change in particle physics inside the horizon until a time of order the Schwarzschild radius. We correct our description of the interior of the black hole . HST provides a complete description of the quantum mechanics along any time-like trajectory, even those which fall through the bla…
In holography, the IR behavior of a quantum system at nonzero density is described by the near horizon geometry of an extremal charged black hole. It is commonly believed that for systems on $S^3$, this near horizon geometry is $AdS_2\times S^3 $. We show that this is not the case: generic static, nonspherical perturbations of $AdS_2\times S^3 $ blow up at the horizon, showing that it is not a stable IR fixed point. We then construct a new near horizon geometry which is invariant under only $SO(3)$ (and not $SO(4)$) symmetry and show that it is stable to $SO(3)$-preserving perturbations (but n…
We investigate puncture statistics based on the covariant area spectrum in loop quantum gravity. First, we consider Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics with a Gibbs factor for punctures. We establish formulae which relate physical quantities such as horizon area to the parameter characterizing holographic degrees of freedom. We also perform numerical calculations and obtain consistency with these formulae. These results tell us that the holographic bound is satisfied in the large area limit and correction term of the entropy-area law can be proportional to the logarithm of the horizon area. Second, w…
We examine how the (2+1)-dimensional AdS space is covered by the Fefferman-Graham system of coordinates for Minkowski, Rindler and static de Sitter boundary metrics. We find that, in the last two cases, the coordinates do not cover the full AdS space. On a constant-time slice, the line delimiting the excluded region has endpoints at the locations of the horizons of the boundary metric. Its length, after an appropriate regularization, reproduces the entropy of the dual CFT on the boundary background. The horizon can be interpreted as the holographic image of the line segment delimiting the excl…
