We study bounded actions of groups and semigroups $G$ on exact sequences of Banach spaces from the point of view of quasilinear maps, characterize the actions on the twisted sum space by commutator estimates and introduce the associated notions of $G$-centralizer and $G$-equivariant map. We will show that when (A) $G$ is an amenable group and (U) the target space is complemented in its bidual by a $G$-equivariant projection, then uniformly bounded compatible families of operators generate bounded actions on the twisted sum space; that compatible quasilinear maps are linear perturbations of $G$-centralizers; and that, under (A) and (U), $G$-centralizers are bounded perturbations of $G$-equivariant maps. The previous results are optimal. Several examples and counterexamples are presented involving the action of the isometry group of $L_p(0,1), p\neq 2$ on the Kalton-Peck space $Z_p$, certain non-unitarizable triangular representations of the free group $F_\infty$ on the Hilbert space, the compatibility of complex structures on twisted sums, or bounded actions on the interpolation scale of $L_p$-spaces. In the last section we consider the category of $G$-Banach spaces and study its exact sequences, showing that, under (A) and (U), $G$-splitting and usual splitting coincide.
It is proved that there exist complemented subspaces of countable topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces which cannot be represented as topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces. (This is a revised version of the paper by the same name formerly contained in the file ostrovskiicompsbsp.atx.)
In this paper, we discuss the role played by additional set-theoretic assumptions in the investigation of the existence of nontrivial twisted sums of $c_0$ and spaces of continuous functions on nonmetrizable compact Hausdorff spaces.
We study the notions of acs, luacs and uacs Banach spaces which were introduced by V. Kadets et al. in 2000 and form common generalisations of the usual rotundity and smoothness properties of Banach spaces. In particular, we are interested in (mainly infinite) absolute sums of such spaces. We also introduce some new classes of spaces that lie inbetween those of acs and uacs spaces and study their behaviour under the formation of absolute sums as well.
We prove that the diametral strong diameter 2 property of a Banach space (meaning that, in convex combinations of relatively weakly open subsets of its unit ball, every point has an "almost diametral" point) is stable under 1-sums, i.e., the direct sum of two spaces with the diametral strong diameter 2 property equipped with the 1-norm has again this property.
A Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point) of a Banach space is a norm one element $x$ for which every point in the unit ball (resp.~element $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance 2 from $x$. A Banach space has the well-known Daugavet property (resp.~diametral local diameter 2 property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point). This paper complements the article "Delta- and Daugavet-points in Banach spaces" by T. A. Abrahamsen, R. Haller, V. Lima, and K. Pirk, where the study of the existence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-po…
We show that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of an uncountable collection of Banach spaces is a locally convex direct sum of complemented subspaces of countable subsums. As a corollary we prove that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of arbitrary collection of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces is isomorphic to a locally convex direct sum of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces.
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the ball generated property (BGP) if every closed, bounded, convex subset of $X$ can be written as an intersection of finite unions of closed balls. In 2002 S. Basu proved that the BGP is stable under (infinite) $c_0$- and $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$. We will show here that for any absolute, normalised norm $\|\cdot\|_E$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ satisfying a certain smoothness condition the direct sum $X\oplus_E Y$ of two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ with respect to $\|\cdot\|_E$ enjoys the BGP whenever $X$ and $Y$ have the BGP.
It is shown that if a Banach space X has the weak Banach-Saks property and the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and Y satisfies property asymptotic (P) (which is weaker than the condition WCS(Y)>1), then the direct sum of X and Y endowed with a strictly monotone norm enjoys the weak fixed point property. The same conclusion is valid if X admits a 1-unconditional basis.
We show that if a Banach space X has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and Y has the generalized Gossez-Lami Dozo property or is uniformly convex in every direction, then the direct sum of X and Y with a strictly monotone norm has the weak fixed point property. The result is new even if Y is finite-dimensional.
We prove that, if Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ are $δ$-average rough, then their direct sum with respect to an absolute norm $N$ is $δ/N(1,1)$-average rough. In particular, for octahedral $X$ and $Y$ and for $p$ in $(1,\infty)$ the space $X\oplus_p Y$ is $2^{1-1/p}$-average rough, which is in general optimal. Another consequence is that for any $δ$ in $(1,2]$ there is a Banach space which is exactly $δ$-average rough. We give a complete characterization when an absolute sum of two Banach spaces is octahedral or has the strong diameter 2 property. However, among all of the absolute sums, the diame…
We study the numerical index of absolute sums of Banach spaces, giving general conditions which imply that the numerical index of the sum is less or equal than the infimum of the numerical indices of the summands and we provide some examples where the equality holds covering the already known case of $c_0$-, $\ell_1$- and $\ell_\infty$-sums and giving as a new result the case of $E$-sums where $E$ has the RNP and $n(E)=1$ (in particular for finite-dimensional $E$ with $n(E)=1$). We also show that the numerical index of a Banach space $Z$ which contains a dense increasing union of one-complemen…
We show that if we assume Martin's Axiom, then there exists a nontrivial twisted sum of c_0 and C(K), for every compact space K with finite height and weight at least continuum. This result settles the problem of existence of nontrivial twisted sums of c_0 and C(K), for finite height spaces K, under Martin's Axiom.
We study certain twisted sums of Orlicz spaces with non-trivial type which can be viewed as Fenchel-Orlicz spaces on ${\rm {\bf R}}^2$. We then show that a large class of Fenchel-Orlicz spaces on ${\rm {\bf R}}^n$ can be renormed to have property (M). In particular this gives a new construction of the twisted Hilbert space $Z_2$ and shows it has property (M), after an appropriate renorming.
The paper studies properties of twisted sums of a Banach space $X$ with $c_0(κ)$. We first prove a representation theorem for such twisted sums from which we will obtain, among others, the following: (a) twisted sums of $c_0(I)$ and $c_0(κ)$ are either subspaces of $\ell_\infty(κ)$ or trivial on a copy of $c_0(κ^+)$; (b) under the hypothesis $[\mathfrak p = \mathfrak c]$, when $K$ is either a suitable Corson compact, a separable Rosenthal compact or a scattered compact of finite height, there is a twisted sum of $C(K)$ with $c_0(κ)$ that is not isomorphic to a space of continuous functions; (c…
This paper is devoted to providing a unifying approach to the study of the uniqueness of unconditional bases, up to equivalence and permutation, of infinite direct sums of quasi-Banach spaces. Our new approach to this type of problem permits us to show that a wide class of vector-valued sequence spaces have a unique unconditional basis up to a permutation. In particular, solving a problem from [F. Albiac and C. Leránoz, Uniqueness of unconditional bases in nonlocally convex $\ell_1$-products, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 374 (2011), no. 2, 394--401] we show that if $X$ is quasi-Banach space with a str…
A linear continuous nonzero operator G:X->Y is a Daugavet center if every rank-1 operator T:X->Y satisfies ||G+T||=||G||+||T||. We study the case when either X or Y is a sum $X_1 \oplus_F X_2$ of two Banach spaces $X_1$ and $X_2$ by some two-dimensional Banach space F. We completely describe the class of those F such that for some spaces $X_1$ and $X_2$ there exists a Daugavet center acting from $X_1\oplus_F X_2$, and the class of those F such that for some pair of spaces $X_1$ and $X_2$ there is a Daugavet center acting into $X_1\oplus_F X_2$. We also present several examples of such Daugavet…
Motivated by a problem stated by S.A.Argyros and Th. Raikoftsalis, we introduce a new class of Banach spaces. Namely, for a sequence of separable Banach spaces $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, we define the Bourgain Delbaen $\mathcal{L}^{\infty}$-sum of the sequence $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ which is a Banach space $\mathcal{Z}$ constructed with the Bourgain-Delbaen method. In particular, for every $1\leq p<\infty$, taking $X_n=\ell_p$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ the aforementioned space $\mathcal{Z}_p$ is strictly quasi prime and admits $\ell_p$ as a complemented subspace. We s…
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the $\mathsf{SVM}$ (stability of vector measures) property if there exists a constant $v<\infty$ such that for any algebra of sets $\mathcal F$, and any function $ν\colon\mathcal F\to X$ satisfying $$\|ν(A\cup B)-ν(A)-ν(B)\|\leq 1\quad{for disjoint}A,B\in\mathcal F,$$there is a vector measure $μ\colon\mathcal F\to X$ with $\|ν(A)-μ(A)\|\leq v$ for all $A\in\mathcal F$. If this condition is valid when restricted to set algebras $\mathcal F$ of cardinality less than some fixed cardinal number $κ$, then we say that $X$ has the $κ$-$\mathsf{SVM}$ property. The le…
Let F be a quasi-linear map on a separable normed space X, and assume that F splits on an infinite-dimensional subspace of X. Then the twisted sum topology induced by F on the direct sum of X and the real line can be written as the supremum of a nearly convex topology and a trivial dual topology. (This partially answers a question of Klee.) The result applies when X is \ell_1 and F is the Ribe function or when X is James's space.
We consider the class of Banach space $Y$ for which $c_0$ admits a nontrivial twisted sum with $Y$. We present a characterization of such space $Y$ in terms of properties of the $weak^\ast$ topology on $Y^\ast$. We prove that under the continuum hypothesis $c_0$ has a nontrivial twisted sum with every space of the form $Y=C(K)$, where $K$ is compact and not metrizable. This gives a consistent positive solution to a problem posed by Cabello, Castillo, Kalton and Yost.
We present new methods to obtain singular twisted sums $X\oplus_ΩX$ (i.e., exact sequences $0\to X\to X\oplus_ΩX \to X\to 0$ in which the quotient map is strictly singular), in which $X$ is the interpolation space arising from a complex interpolation scheme and $Ω$ is the induced centralizer. Although our methods are quite general, in our applications we are mainly concerned with the choice of $X$ as either a Hilbert space, or Ferenczi's uniformly convex Hereditarily Indecomposable space. In the first case, we construct new singular twisted Hilbert spaces, including the only known example so f…
This paper deals with extensions or twisted sums of Banach spaces that come induced by complex interpolation and the relation between the type and cotype of the spaces in the interpolation scale and the nontriviality and singularity of the induced extension. The results are presented in the context of interpolation of families of Banach spaces, and are applied to the study of submodules of Schatten classes. We also obtain nontrivial extensions of spaces without the CAP which also fail the CAP.
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space. The connection between algebra homomorphisms defined on subalgebras of the Banach algebra $\ell^{1}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ and the algebraic structure of Cesàro sums of a linear operator $T\in \mathcal{B}(X)$ is established. In particular, we show that every $(C, α)$-bounded operator $T$ induces - and is in fact characterized - by such an algebra homomorphism. Our method is based on some sequence kernels, Weyl fractional difference calculus and convolution Banach algebras that are introduced and deeply examined. To illustrate our results, improvements to bounds for A…
We give a new proof of a characterization of the closeness of the range of a continuous linear operator and of the closeness of the sum of two closed vector subspaces of a Banach space. Then we state sufficient conditions for the closeness of the sum of two closed subspaces of the Banach space of bounded functions and apply this result on various pseudo almost periodic spaces and pseudo almost automorphic spaces.
We investigate the following problem posed by Cabello Sanchéz, Castillo, Kalton, and Yost: Let $K$ be a nonmetrizable compact space. Does there exist a nontrivial twisted sum of $c_0$ and $C(K)$, i.e., does there exist a Banach space $X$ containing a non-complemented copy $Z$ of $c_0$ such that the quotient space $X/Z$ is isomorphic to $C(K)$? Using additional set-theoretic assumptions we give the first examples of compact spaces $K$ providing a negative answer to this question. We show that under Martin's axiom and the negation of the continuum hypothesis, if either $K$ is the Cantor cube $2^…
In this note, we study some concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on Hamming graphs, as well as their stability under sums of Banach spaces. As an application, we extend a result of Causey on the coarse Lipschitz structure of quasi-reflexive spaces satisfying upper $\ell_p$ tree estimates to the setting of $\ell_p$-sums of such spaces. Our result provides us with a tool for constructing the first examples of Banach spaces that are not quasi-reflexive but nevertheless admit some concentration inequality. We also give a sufficient condition for a space to be asymptotic-$c_0$ in ter…
In this paper we study conditions on a Banach space X that ensure that the Banach algebra K(X) of compact operators is amenable. We give a symmetrized approximation property of X which is proved to be such a condition. This property is satisfied by a wide range of Banach spaces including all the classical spaces. We then investigate which constructions of new Banach spaces from old ones preserve the property of carrying amenable algebras of compact operators. Roughly speaking, dual spaces, predual spaces and certain tensor products do inherit this property and direct sums do not. For direct su…
We discuss pruning and coloring lemmas on regular families. We discuss several applications of these lemmas to computing the Szlenk index of certain $w^*$ compact subsets of the dual of a separable Banach space. Applications include estimates of the Szlenk index of Minkowski sums, infinite direct sums of separable Banach spaces, constant reduction, and three space properties. We also consider using regular families to construct Banach spaces with prescribed Szlenk index. As a consequence, we give a characterization of which countable ordinals occur as the Szlenk index of a Banach space, prove …
The main result is that the cluster value problem in separable Banach spaces, for the Banach algebras $A_u$ and $H^{\infty}$, can be reduced to the cluster value problem in those spaces which are $\ell_1$ sums of a sequence of finite dimensional spaces.
We obtain some results for and further examples of subprojective and superprojective Banach spaces. We also give several conditions providing examples of non-reflexive superprojective spaces; one of these conditions is stable under $c_0$-sums and projective tensor products.
Let $\mathbb{Y}$ be either an Orlicz sequence space or a Marcinkiewicz sequence space. We take advantage of the recent advances in the theory of factorization of the identity carried on in [R. Lechner, Subsymmetric weak* Schauder bases and factorization of the identity, arXiv:1804.01372 [math.FA]] to provide conditions on $\mathbb{Y}$ that ensure that, for any $1\le p\le\infty$, the infinite direct sum of $\mathbb{Y}$ in the sense of $\ell_p$ is a primary Banach space, enlarging this way the list of Banach spaces that are known to be primary.
We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators between Banach spaces. Sufficient conditions are given for generalized direct sums of Banach spaces with respect to a~uniformly monotone Banach sequence lattice to have the approximate hyperplane series property. This result implies that Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem holds for operators from $\ell_1$ into such direct sums of Banach spaces. We also show that the direct sum of two spaces with the approximate hyperplane series property has such property whenever the norm of the direct sum is absolute.
We consider a certain type of geometric properties of Banach spaces, which includes for instance octahedrality, almost squareness, lushness and the Daugavet property. For this type of properties, we obtain a general reduction theorem, which, roughly speaking, states the following: if the property in question is stable under certain finite absolute sums (for example finite $\ell^p$-sums), then it is also stable under the formation of corresponding Köthe-Bochner spaces (for example $L^p$-Bochner spaces). From this general theorem, we obtain as corollaries a number of new results as well as some …
We develop a very general operator-valued functional calculus for operators with an $H^{\infty}-$calculus. We then apply this to the joint functional calculus of two commuting sectorial operators when one has an $H^{\infty}$calculus. Using this we prove theorem of Dore-Venni type on sums of commuting sectorial operators and apply our results to the problem of $L_p-$maximal regularity. Our main assumption is the R-boundedness of certain sets of operators, and therefore methods from the geometry of Banach spaces are essential here. In the final section we exploit the special Banach space structu…
We prove a formula for the Szlenk power type of the injective tensor product of Banach spaces with Szlenk index at most $ω$. We also show that the Szlenk power type as well as summability of the Szlenk index are separably determined, and we extend some of our recent results concerning direct sums.
A Banach space $X$ is called subprojective if any of its infinite dimensional subspaces $Y$ contains a further infinite dimensional subspace complemented in $X$. This paper is devoted to systematic study of subprojectivity. We examine the stability of subprojectivity of Banach spaces under various operations, such us direct or twisted sums, tensor products, and forming spaces of operators. Along the way, we obtain new classes of subprojective spaces.

Let G be a locally compact group, let $Ω:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}^*$ be a 2-cocycle, and let $Φ$ be a Young function. In this paper, we consider the Orlicz space $L^Φ(G)$ and investigate its algebraic property under the twisted convolution $\circledast$ coming from $Ω$. We find sufficient conditions under which $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ becomes a Banach algebra or a Banach $*$-algebra; we call it a {\it twisted Orlicz algebra}. Furthermore, we study its harmonic analysis properties, such as symmetry, existence of functional calculus, regularity, and having Wiener property, mostly for the case when…
Suppose $\Cal J$ is a two-sided quasi-Banach ideal of compact operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\Cal H$. We show that an operator $T\in\Cal J$ can be expressed as finite linear combination of commutators $[A,B]$ where $A\in\Cal J$ and $B\in\Cal B(\Cal H)$ if and only its eigenvalues $(λ_n)$ (arranged in decreasing order of absolute value, repeated according to algebraic multiplicity and augmented by zeros if necessary) satisfy the condition that the diagonal operator $\diag\{\frac1n(λ_1+\cdots +λ_n)\}$ is a member of $\Cal J.$ This answers (for quasi-Banach ideals) a…
We show that the direct sum of Banach spaces $X_{1},..., X_{r}$ with a strictly monotone norm has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings whenever $M(X_{i})>1$ for each $i=1,...,r$. In particular, $(X_{1} \oplus ... \oplus X_{r})_ψ$ enjoys the fixed point property if Banach spaces $X_{i}$ are uniformly nonsquare. This combined with the earlier results gives a definitive answer for r=2: the direct sum of uniformly nonsquare spaces $X_{1}, X_{2}$ with any monotone norm has FPP. Our results are extended for asymptotically nonexpansive mappings in the intermediate sense.
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
We prove some results concerning the WORTH property and the García-Falset coefficient of absolute sums of infinitely many Banach spaces. The Opial property/uniform Opial property of infinite $\ell^p$-sums is also studied and some properties analogous to the Opial property/uniform Opial property for Lebesgue-Bochner spaces $L^p(μ,X)$ are discussed.
We provide a new extension of Pitt's theorem for compact operators between quasi-Banach lattices, which permits to describe unconditional bases of finite direct sums of Banach spaces $\mathbb{X}_{1}\oplus\dots\oplus\mathbb{X}_{n}$ as direct sums of unconditional bases of its summands. The general splitting principle we obtain yields, in particular, that if each $\mathbb{X}_{i}$ has a unique unconditional basis (up to equivalence and permutation), then $\mathbb{X}_{1}\oplus \cdots\oplus\mathbb{X}_{n}$ has a unique unconditional basis too. Among the novel applications of our techniques to the st…
This paper is concerned with the isomorphic structure of the Banach space $\ell_\infty/c_0$ and how it depends on combinatorial tools whose existence is consistent but not provable from the usual axioms of ZFC. Our main global result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty/c_0$ does not have an orthogonal \break $\ell_\infty$-decomposition that is, it is not of the form $\ell_\infty(X)$ for any Banach space $X$. The main local result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty(c_0(\mathfrak{c}))$ does not embed isomorphically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$, where $\mathfrak{c}$ is the cardinality of…
A Banach space $X$ is said to have property (K) if every $w^*$-convergent sequence in $X^*$ admits a convex block subsequence which converges with respect to the Mackey topology. We study the connection of this property with strongly weakly compactly generated Banach spaces and its stability under subspaces, quotients and $\ell^p$-sums. We extend a result of Frankiewicz and Plebanek by proving that property (K) is preserved by $\ell^1$-sums of less than $\mathfrak{p}$ summands. Without any cardinality restriction, we show that property (K) is stable under $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$.
We study splitting chains in $\mathscr{P}(ω)$, that is, families of subsets of $ω$ which are linearly ordered by $\subseteq^*$ and which are splitting. We prove that their existence is independent of axioms of $\mathsf{ZFC}$. We show that they can be used to construct certain peculiar Banach spaces: twisted sums of $C(ω^*)=\ell_\infty/c_0$ and $c_0(\mathfrak c)$. Also, we consider splitting chains in a topological setting, where they give rise to the so called tunnels.
In this work, we obtain some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a space to be nicely smooth, and show that they are equivalent for separable or Asplund spaces. We obtain a sufficient condition for the Ball Generated Property (BGP), and conclude that Property $(II)$ implies the BGP, which, in turn, implies the space is nicely smooth. We show that the class of nicely smooth spaces is stable under $c_o$ and $\ell_p$ sums and also under finite $\ell_1$ sums; that being nicely smooth is not a three space property; and that the Bochner $L_p$ spaces are nicely smooth if and only if $X$ is b…
A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if for every $C^*$-algebra $\A$ the projective tensor product $\ell^1(\G)\widehat\otimes\A$ is a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra. For such a group we show that the twisted crossed product $\ell^1_{α,ø}(\G;\A)$ is also a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, for every twisted action $(α,ø)$ of $\G$ in a $C^*$-algebra $\A$\,. We extend this property to other types of decay, replacing the $\ell^1$-condition. We also make the connection with certain classes of twisted kernels, used in a theory of integral operators involving group $2$-cocycles. The algebra …
We give a criterion ensuring that the elementary class of a modular Banach space E (that is, the class of Banach spaces, some ultrapower of which is linearly isometric to an ultrapower of E) consists of all direct sums E\oplus_m H, where H is an arbitrary Hilbert space and \oplus_m denotes the modular direct sum. Also, we give several families of examples in the class of Nakano direct sums of finite dimensional normed spaces that satisfy this criterion. This yields many new examples of uncountably categorical Banach spaces, in the model theory of Banach space structures.
