The Feynman propagator in curved spacetime admits an asymptotic (Schwinger-DeWitt) series expansion in derivatives of the metric. Remarkably, all terms in the series containing the Ricci scalar R can be summed exactly. We show that this (non-perturbative) property of the Schwinger-DeWitt series has a natural and equivalent counterpart in the adiabatic (Parker-Fulling) series expansion of the scalar modes in an homogeneous cosmological spacetime. The equivalence between both R-summed adiabatic expansions can be further extended when a background scalar field is also present.
Using two recent techniques giving non-perturbative re-summed estimates of the damping and of the conservative part of the dynamics of two-body systems, we describe the transition between adiabatic inspiral and plunge in binary non-spinning black holes moving along quasi-circular orbits.
We perform a qualitative and thermodynamic study of two models when one takes into account adiabatic particle production. In the first one, there is a constant particle production rate, which leads to solutions depicting the current cosmic acceleration but without inflation. The other one has solutions that unify the early and late time acceleration. These solutions converge asymptotically to the thermal equilibrium.
In this paper we propose a definition of quasifree Hadamard states for spinor fields on a curved space-time by specifying the Polarisation Set of the two-point function. We prove that the thermal equilibrium state on an ultrastatic space-time is Hadamard. We then construct an adiabatic vacuum state on a general globally hyperbolic Lorentz manifold using a factorisation of the spinorial Klein-Gordon operator. This state is pure. In what constitutes the main part of the paper, we show that it is also Hadamard. As a side result, we obtain the propagation of singularities of the spinorial Klein-Go…
A convenient framework is developed to generalize Berry's investigation of the adiabatic geometrical phase for a classical relativistic charged scalar field in a curved background spacetime which is minimally coupled to electromagnetism and an arbitrary (non-electromagnetic) scalar potential. It involves a two-component formulation of the corresponding Klein-Gordon equation. A precise definition of the adiabatic approximation is offered and conditions of its validity are discussed. It is shown that the adiabatic geometric phase can be computed without making a particular choice for an inner pr…
I consider certain renormalization effects in curved spacetime quantum field theory. In the very early universe these effects resemble those of a cosmological constant, while in the present universe they give rise to a significant finite renormalization of the gravitational constant. The relevant renormalization term and its relation to elementary particle masses was first found by Parker and Toms in 1985, as a consequence of the ``new partially summed form'' of the propagator in curved spacetime. The significance of the term is based on the contribution of massive particles to the vacuum. In …
We present a simple method for deriving the renormalization counterterms from the components of the energy-momentum tensor in curved space-time. This method allows full control over the finite parts of the counterterms and provides explicit expressions for each term separately. As an example, the method is used for the self-interacting scalar field in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric in the adiabatic approximation, where we calculate the renormalized equation of motion for the field and the renormalized components of the energy-momentum tensor to fourth adiabatic order while including inter…
The analysis of gravitational wave data may require greater accuracy than is afforded by the adiabatic approximation to the trajectory of and field produced by a particle moving in curved spacetime. Higher accuracy is available with a two-timescale approach using as an expansion parameter the ratio of orbital time to radiation reaction time. To avoid apparent divergences at large distances, the details of the method are important, especially the choice of the foliation, the spacetime surfaces on which the orbital elements are taken to be constant. Here we apply the two-timescale approach to a …
We propose to slightly generalize the DeWitt-Schwinger adiabatic renormalization subtractions in curved space to include an arbitrary renormalization mass scale $μ$. The new predicted running for the gravitational couplings are fully consistent with decoupling of heavy massive fields. This is a somewhat improvement with respect to the more standard treatment of minimal (DeWitt-Schwinger) subtractions via dimensional regularization. We also show how the vacuum metamorphosis model emerges from the running couplings.
Within the framework of adiabatic regularization, we present a simple formalism to calculate number density and renormalized energy-momentum density of spin 1/2 particles in spatially flat FLRW spacetimes using an appropriate WKB ansatz for the adiabatic expansion for the field modes. The conformal and axial anomalies thus found are in exact agreement with those obtained from other renormalization methods. This formalism can be considered as an appropriate extension of the techniques originally introduced for scalar fields, applicable to fermions in curved space.
We discuss neutrino oscillations in curved spacetime. Our heuristic approach can accomodate matter effects and gravitational contributions to neutrino spin precession in the presence of a magnetic field. By way of illustration, we perform explicit calculations in the Schwarzschild geometry. In this case, gravitational effects on neutrino oscillations are intimately related to the redshift. We discuss how spacetime curvature could affect the resonance position and adiabaticity of matter-enhanced neutrino flavor conversion.
Instead of the work \cite{1} which in according to the Lovelock theorem it could not applicable for all types of 4D curved spacetimes of Einstein Gauss Bonnet (EGB) gravity, authors of the work \cite{2} applied break of diffeomorphism property to present a consistent EGB gravity theory. In this work we use the latter model by adding a nonlinear electromagnetic field lagrangian density to study affects of GB coupling constant into the thermodynamic phase transition and Joule Thomson (JT) adiabatic expansion of a 4D $dS/AdS$ GB Bardeen black hole.
Quantum Energy Inequalities (QEIs) are results which limit the extent to which the smeared renormalised energy density of the quantum field can be negative, when averaged along a timelike curve or over a more general timelike submanifold in spacetime. On globally hyperbolic spacetimes the minimally-coupled massive quantum Klein--Gordon field is known to obey a `difference' QEI that depends on a reference state chosen arbitrarily from the class of Hadamard states. In many spacetimes of interest this bound cannot be evaluated explicitly. In this paper we obtain the first `absolute' QEI for the m…
An alternative inflationary model is proposed predicated upon a consideration of the form of the uncertainty principle in a curved background spacetime. An argument is presented suggesting a possible curvature dependence in the correct commutator relations for a quantum field in a classical background which cannot be deduced by simply extrapolation from the flat spacetime theory. To assess the possible consequences of this dependence, we apply the idea to a scalar field in a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, using a simple model for the curvature dependence (along the way, a previo…
In the conventional adiabatic regularization the vacuum ultraviolet divergences of a quantum field in curved spacetime are removed by subtracting the $k$-mode of the stress tensor to the 4th-order. For a scalar field in de Sitter space, we find that the 4th-order regularized spectral energy density is negative. Moreover, the 2nd-order regularization for minimal coupling ($ξ=0$) and the 0th-order regularization for conformal coupling ($ξ=\frac16$) yield a positive and UV-convergent spectral energy density and power spectrum. The regularized stress tensor in the vacuum is maximally symmetric and…
We extend the adiabatic regularization method for an expanding universe to include the Yukawa interaction between quantized Dirac fermions and a homogeneous background scalar field. We give explicit expressions for the renormalized expectation values of the stress-energy tensor $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$ and the bilinear $\langle \barψψ\rangle$ in a spatially flat FLRW spacetime. These are basic ingredients in the semiclassical field equations of fermionic matter in curved spacetime interacting with a background scalar field. The ultraviolet subtracting terms of the adiabatic regularization can …
The last decades have witnessed an unprecedented advancement in our knowledge of the large scale universe. In particular, increasingly accurate cosmological observations have allowed us to discover a form of "dark energy", which presently dominates the expansion of the universe. On the other hand, fundamental problems in the standard cosmological model point towards the possibility of a primordial inflationary period. Both these expansion phases have in common the fact that they should be governed by forms of energy with properties much similar to those of vacuum energy of classical or quantum…
We apply the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method for the harmonic oscillator with time dependent mass and frequency to the modes of a charged scalar field that propagates in a curved, homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. We recover the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the case of a flat DeSitter spacetime, the equivalent one in the case of a closed DeSitter spacetime and the invariant vacuum in a curved spacetime that evolves adiabatically. In the three cases, it is computed the thermodynamical magnitudes of entanglement between the modes of the particles and antiparticles of the invariant vacuum, and the…
We present a detailed and systematic analysis of the nonperturbative, nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum field in the reheating phase of inflatonary cosmology, including full back reactions of the quantum field on the curved spacetime, as well as the fluctuations on the mean field. We use the O(N) field theory with unbroken symmetry in a spatially flat FRW universe to study the dynamics of the inflaton in the post-inflaton, preheating stage. Oscillations of the inflaton's zero mode induce parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations, resulting in a rapid transfer of energy to the inhomog…
The $Λ$-term in Einstein's equations is a fundamental building block of the `concordance' $Λ$CDM model of cosmology. Even though the model is not free of fundamental problems, they have not been circumvented by any alternative dark energy proposal either. Here we stick to the $Λ$-term, but we contend that it can be a `running quantity' in quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spacetime. A plethora of phenomenological works have shown that this option can be highly competitive with the $Λ$CDM with a rigid cosmological term. The, so-called, `running vacuum models' (RVM's) are characterized by the…
We reexamine the regularization of the two-point function of a scalar field in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. Adiabatic regularization provides a set of subtraction terms in momentum space that successfully remove its ultraviolet divergences at coincident points, but can significantly distort the power spectrum at infrared scales, especially for light fields. In this work we propose, by using the intrinsic ambiguities of the renormalization program, a new set of subtraction terms that minimize the distortions for scales $k \lesssim M$, with $M$ an arbitrary mass scale.…
