We find the holographic dual to the three classes of superconformal Janus interfaces in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM that preserve three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$, and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. The solutions are constructed in five-dimensional SO(6) maximal gauged supergravity and are then uplifted to type IIB supergravity. Corresponding to each of the three classes of Janus solutions, there are also AdS$_4\times S^1\times S^5$ J-fold backgrounds. These J-folds have a non-trivial SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy for the axio-dilaton on the $S^1$ and are dual to three-dimensional superconformal field theories.
We holographically compute an inter-boundary entanglement entropy in a time-dependent two-sided black hole which was constructed in hep-th/0701108 by applying time-dependent Janus deformation to BTZ black hole. The black hole contains "causal shadow region" which is causally disconnected from both the conformal boundaries. We find that the Janus deformation results in an earlier phase transition between the extremal surfaces and that the phase transition disappears when the causal shadow is sufficiently large.
This paper investigates scalar perturbations in the top-down supersymmetric Janus solutions dual to conformal interfaces in the $D1/D5$ CFT, finding analytic closed-form solutions. We obtain an explicit representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagator and extract the two-point correlation function of the dual operator with itself, whose form is not fixed by symmetry alone. We give an expression involving the sum of conformal blocks associated with the bulk-defect operator product expansion and briefly discuss finite-temperature extensions. To our knowledge, this is the first two-point function co…
In this paper we compute the holographic boundary entropy for half-BPS Janus deformations of the $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ vacuum of type IIB supergravity. Previous work \cite{Chiodaroli:2009yw} has shown that there are two independent deformations of this sort. In one case, the six-dimensional dilaton jumps across the interface, while the other case displays a jump of axion and four-form potential. In case of a jump of the six-dimensional dilaton, it is possible to compare the holographic result with the weak-coupling result for a two-dimensional interface CFT where the radii of the compact…
We study an $SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)$ truncation of four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to six vector multiplets with $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ gauge group and find a new class of holographic RG flows and supersymmetric Janus solutions. In this truncation, there is a unique $N=4$ supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ SCFT in three dimensions. In the presence of the axion, the RG flows generally preserve $N=2$ supersymmetry while the supersymmetry is enhanced to $N=4$ for vanishing axion. We find solutions interpolating between the $AdS_4$ vacuum and singular…
I discuss recent supergravity constructions of type IIB holographic interfaces in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=4$ field theories. I explain how each holographic interface can be compactified on a circle with an SL$(2,{\bf Z})$ monodromy leading to a novel AdS$_4$ supergravity solution. These AdS$_4$ backgrounds are argued to be dual to so-called J-fold superconformal field theories in three dimensions.
We construct holographic Janus solutions, which describe a conformal interface in the theory of M2-branes, in four-dimensional gauged supergravities using a perturbative method. In particular, we study three Einstein-scalar systems and their BPS equations, which are derived by Bobev, Pilch, and Warner (2014). The actions of our interest are all consistent truncations of $D=11$ supergravity chosen to be invariant under $SO(4)\times SO(4)$, $SU(3)\times U(1)\times U(1)$, and $G_2$ symmetry subgroups of $SO(8)$ respectively. The utility of our semi-analytic result is illustrated by the calculatio…
We construct Lifshitz-like Janus solutions in the Einstein-scalar theory with cosmological constant in arbitrary dimensions. They are holographically dual to z=2 Lifshitz-like field theories with a defect. The four-dimensional solutions can be embedded into type IIB supergravity as dilatonic deformations of AdS_5 x Y^5 with three-form field strengths, where Y^5 is a five-dimensional Einstein manifold.
We compute holographic complexity for the non-supersymmetric Janus deformation of AdS$_5$ according to the volume conjecture. The result is characterized by a power-law ultraviolet divergence. When a ball-shaped region located around the interface is considered, a sub-leading logarithmic divergent term and a finite part appear in the corresponding subregion volume complexity. Using two different prescriptions to regularize the divergences, we find that the coefficient of the logarithmic term is universal.
In this paper, we continue the study of Janus and RG-flow interfaces in three dimensional supergravity continuing the work presented in [1]. We consider ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity theories which have a ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ $AdS_3$ vacuum with $D^1(2,1;α) \times D^1(2,1;α)$ symmetry for general $α$. We derive the BPS flow equations and find numerical solutions. Some holographic quantities such as the entanglement entropy are calculated.
In this note we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy in the presence of a conformal interface for a geometric configuration in which the entangling region ${\cal A}$ lies on one side of the interface. For the supersymmetric Janus solution we find exact agreement between the holographic and CFT calculation of the entanglement entropy.
Type IIB supergravity admits Janus and multi-Janus solutions with eight unbroken supersymmetries that are locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 (where M_4 is either T^4 or K_3). These solutions are dual to two or more CFTs defined on half-planes which share a common line interface. Their geometry consists of an AdS_2 x S^2 x M_4 fibration over a simply connected Riemann surface Sigma with boundary. In the present paper, we show that regular exact solutions exist also for surfaces Sigma which are not simply connected. Specifically, we construct in detail solutions for which Sigma has the topo…
We present a one-parameter deformation of the AdS_{4} x S^{7} vacuum, which is a regular solution in M-theory, invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x SO(4), and which preserves 16 supersymmetries. The solution corresponds to a holographic realization of a Janus-like interface/defect theory, despite the absence of a dilaton in M-theory. The 2+1-dimensional CFT dual results from the maximally symmetric CFT through the insertion of a dimension 2 operator which is localized along a 1+1-dimensional linear interface/defect, thereby partially breaking the superconformal symmetry. The solution admits a reg…
We investigate a family of SU(3)$\times$U(1)$\times$U(1)-invariant holographic flows and Janus solutions obtained from gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions. We give complete details of how to use the uplift formulae to obtain the corresponding solutions in M theory. While the flow solutions appear to be singular from the four-dimensional perspective, we find that the eleven-dimensional solutions are much better behaved and give rise to interesting new classes of compactification geometries that are smooth, up to orbifolds, in the infra-red limit. Our solutions involve new pha…
We give a large class of supersymmetric Janus solutions in $ω$-deformed (dyonic) $SO(8)$ maximal gauged supergravity with $ω=\fracπ{8}$. Unlike the purely electric counterpart, the dyonic $SO(8)$ gauged supergravity exhibits a richer structure of $AdS_4$ vacua with $N=8,2,1,1$ supersymmetries and $SO(8)$, $U(3)$, $G_2$ and $SU(3)$ symmetries, respectively. Similarly, domain walls interpolating among these critical points show a very rich structure as well. In this paper, we show that this gauged supergravity also accommodates a number of interesting supersymmetric Janus solutions in the form o…
The S-fold description of Janus-type solutions of type IIB supergravity is investigated. This is done by first studying a $\,\textrm{U}(1) \times \textrm{U}(1)\,$ invariant sector of the four-dimensional dyonically-gauged $\,{[\,\textrm{SO}(1,1) \times \textrm{SO}(6)\,] \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{12}}\,$ maximal supergravity that arises upon reduction of type IIB supergravity on $\,\mathbb{R} \, \times \, \textrm{S}^{5}\,$. Two AdS$_{4}$ solutions preserving $\,\textrm{SU}(3)\,$ and $\,\textrm{SO}(6)\,$ gauge symmetry together with $\,\mathcal{N}=1\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=0\,$ supersymmetry are found w…
Motivated by an analysis of the sub-superalgebras of the five-dimensional superconformal algebra $F(4)$, we search for the holographic duals to co-dimension one superconformal defects in 5d CFTs which have $SO(4,2) \oplus U(1)$ bosonic symmetry. In particular, we look for domain wall solutions to six-dimensional $F(4)$ gauged supergravity coupled to a single vector multiplet. It is found that supersymmetric domain wall solutions do not exist unless there is a non-trivial profile for one of the vector multiplet scalars which is charged under the gauged $SU(2)$ R-symmetry. This non-trivial profi…
We study $N=4$ gauged supergravity with $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ gauge group in the presence of symplectic deformations and find new classes of Janus solutions preserving $N=1$ and $N=2$ supersymmetries. The $N=2$ solutions preserve $SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)$ symmetry and interpolate between $N=4$ supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua with $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ symmetry. These correspond holographically to $N=(2,0)$ two-dimensional conformal defects within the dual $N=4$ CSM theories with $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ symmetry. The $N=1$ solutions contain two families of Janus configurations, one inter…
Solutions of $(d+1)$-dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field are obtained, which holographically realize interface and boundary CFTs. The solution utilizes a Janus-like $\mathrm{AdS}_d$ slicing ansatz and corresponds to a deformation of the CFT by a spatially-dependent coupling of a relevant operator. The BCFT solutions are singular in the bulk, but physical quantities such as the holographic entanglement entropy can be calculated.
We give a large class of new supersymmetric Janus solutions in dyonic $ISO(7)$ maximal gauged supergravity encompassing all known solutions appearing recently. We consider $SO(3)$ invariant sector in which the gauged supergravity admits four supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua with $N=1,1,2,3$ unbroken supersymmetries and $G_2$, $SU(3)$, $SU(3)\times U(1)$ and $SO(4)$ symmetries, respectively. We find Janus solutions preserving $N=1,2,3$ supersymmetries and interpolating between $AdS_4$ vacua and the $N=8$ SYM phase. These solutions can be interpreted as conformal interfaces between SYM and various c…
The reduced field equations and BPS conditions are derived in Type IIB supergravity for configurations of the Janus type, characterized by an $AdS_4$-slicing of $AdS_5$, and various degrees of internal symmetry and supersymmetry. A generalization of the Janus solution, which includes a varying axion along with a varying dilaton, and has SO(6) internal symmetry, but completely broken supersymmetry, is obtained analytically in terms of elliptic functions. A supersymmetric solution with 4 conformal supersymmetries, SU(3) internal symmetry, a varying axion along with a varying dilaton, and non-tri…
We construct supersymmetric Janus solutions using four-dimensional $N=3$ gauged supergravity with $SO(3)\times SU(3)$ gauge group. The $N=3$ supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacuum with unbroken $SO(3)\times SU(3)$, identified with the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity on $AdS_4\times N^{010}$, provides a gravity dual of supersymmetric $N=3$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory in three dimensions with $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry. The Janus solutions accordingly describe supersymmetric conformal interfaces within this Chern-Simons-Matter theory via the AdS/CFT holography. We find two classes of Janu…
We initiate the study of how tensor networks reproduce properties of static holographic space-times, which are not locally pure anti-de Sitter. We consider geometries that are holographically dual to ground states of defect, interface and boundary CFTs and compare them to the structure of the requisite MERA networks predicted by the theory of minimal updates. When the CFT is deformed, certain tensors require updating. On the other hand, even identical tensors can contribute differently to estimates of entanglement entropies. We interpret these facts holographically by associating tensor update…
We study supersymmetric Janus solutions of dyonic $ISO(7)$-gauged $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 supergravity. We mostly find Janus solutions flowing to 3d $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 SYM phase which is the worldvolume theory on D2-branes and non-conformal. There are also solutions flowing from the critical points which are dual to 3d SCFTs from deformations of the D2-brane theory.

The holographic complexity and fidelity susceptibility have been defined as new quantities dual to different volumes in AdS. In this paper, we will use these new proposals to calculate both of these quantities for a variety of interesting deformations of AdS. We obtain the holographic complexity and fidelity susceptibility for an AdS black hole, Janus solution and a solution with cylindrically symmetry, an inhomogeneous background and a hyperscaling violating background. It is observed that the holographic complexity depends on the size of the subsystem for all these solutions and the fidelity…
We study holographic RG flow solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity obtained from type IIA and IIB string theories compactified on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold with gauge, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. In type IIB non-geometric compactifications, the resulting gauged supergravity has $ISO(3)\times ISO(3)$ gauge group and admits an $N=4$ $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in three dimensions. We study various supersymmetric RG flows from this $N=4$ SCFT to $N=4$ and $N=1$ non-conformal field theories in the IR. The flo…
We propose and study a supersymmetric version of the Janus domain wall solution of type IIB supergravity. Janus is dual to N=4 super Yang Mills theory with a coupling constant that jumps across an interface. While the interface in the Janus field theory completely breaks all supersymmetries, it was found earlier that some supersymmetry can be restored in the field theory at the cost of breaking the SO(6) R-symmetry down to at least SU(3). We find the gravity dual to this supersymmetric interface theory by studying the SU(3) invariant subsector of N=8 gauged supergravity in 5D, which is describ…
We consider theories consisting of a planar interface with $\N=4$ super-Yang-Mills on either side and varying gauge coupling across the interface. The interface does not carry any independent degrees of freedom, but is allowed to support local gauge invariant operators, included with independent interface couplings. In general, both conformal symmetry and supersymmetry will be broken, but for special arrangements of the interface couplings, these symmetries may be restored. We provide a systematic classification of all allowed interface supersymmetries. We find new theories preserving eight an…
We propose and study a specific gauge theory dual of the smooth, non-supersymmetric (and apparently stable) Janus solution of Type IIB supergravity found in hep-th/0304129. The dual field theory is N=4 SYM theory on two half-spaces separated by a planar interface with different coupling constants in each half-space. We assume that the position dependent coupling multiplies the operator L' which is the fourth descendent of the primary Tr(X^I X^J) and closely related to the N=4 Lagrangian density. At the classical level supersymmetry is broken explicitly, but SO(3,2) conformal symmetry is preser…
The complete Type IIB supergravity solutions with 16 supersymmetries are obtained on the manifold $AdS_4 \times S^2 \times S^2 \times Σ$ with $SO(2,3) \times SO(3) \times SO(3)$ symmetry in terms of two holomorphic functions on a Riemann surface $Σ$, which generally has a boundary. This is achieved by reducing the BPS equations using the above symmetry requirements, proving that all solutions of the BPS equations solve the full Type IIB supergravity field equations, mapping the BPS equations onto a new integrable system akin to the Liouville and Sine-Gordon theories, and mapping this integrabl…
We use maximal gauged supergravity in four dimensions to construct the gravity dual of a class of supersymmetric conformal interfaces in the theory on the world-volume of multiple M2-branes. We study three classes of examples in which the $(1+1)$-dimensional defects preserve $(4,4)$, $(0,2)$ or $(0,1)$ supersymmetry. Many of the solutions have the maximally supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to the $\mathcal{N}=8$ ABJM theory on both sides of the interface. We also find new special classes of solutions including one that interpolates between the maximally supersymmetric vacuum and a conformal …
We implement D7 flavor branes in AdS-sliced coordinates on $AdS_5\times S^5$ with the ansatz that the brane fluctuates only in the warped ($μ$) direction in this slicing, which is particularly appropriate for studying the Janus solution. The natural field theory dual in this slicing is $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on two copies of $AdS_4$. Branes extending from $μ=\pmπ/2$ can end at different locations, giving rise to quarks with piecewise constant mass on each $AdS_4$ half-space, jumping discontinuously between them. A second class of flavor brane solutions exists in this coordinate syste…
We construct non-geometric AdS$_4$ solutions of IIB string theory where the fields in overlapping patches are glued by elements of the S-duality group. We obtain them by suitable quotients of compact and non-compact geometric solutions. The quotient procedure suggests CFT duals as quiver theories with links involving the so-called $T[U(N)]$ theory. We test the validity of the non-geometric solutions (and of our proposed holographic duality) by computing the three-sphere partition function $Z$ of the CFTs. A first class of solutions is obtained by an S-duality quotient of Janus-type non-compact…
We construct supersymmetric solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, preserving 1/4 of the supersymmetry, that are holographically dual to ABJM theory which has been deformed by spatially varying mass terms depending on one of the two spatial directions. We show that the BPS equations reduce to the Helmholtz equation on the complex plane leading to rich classes of new solutions. In particular, the construction gives rise to infinite classes of supersymmetric boomerang RG flows, as well as generalising a known Janus solution.
We study mass deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$, $d=4$ SYM theory that are spatially modulated in one spatial dimension and preserve some residual supersymmetry. We focus on generalisations of $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theories and show that it is also possible, for suitably chosen supersymmetric masses, to preserve $d=3$ conformal symmetry associated with a co-dimension one interface. Holographic solutions can be constructed using $D=5$ theories of gravity that arise from consistent truncations of $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and hence type IIB supergravity. For the mass deformations that preserve $d=3$…
We construct infinite new classes of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solutions of type IIB string theory which have non-trivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy along the $S^1$ direction. The solutions are supersymmetric and holographically dual, generically, to $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs in $d=3$. The solutions are first constructed as $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ solutions in $D=5$ $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and then uplifted to $D=10$. Unlike the known $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ S-fold solutions, there is no continuous symmetry associated with the $\mathbb{R}$ direction. The solutions all arise as limiting c…
We construct the D3-brane solution in the holographic dual of the N = 2* theory that describes Wilson lines in symmetric representations of the gauge group. The results perfectly agree with the direct field-theory predictions based on localization.
We introduce a quantity, called pseudo entropy, as a generalization of entanglement entropy via post-selection. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this quantity is dual to areas of minimal area surfaces in time-dependent Euclidean spaces which are asymptotically AdS. We study its basic properties and classifications in qubit systems. In specific examples, we provide a quantum information theoretic meaning of this new quantity as an averaged number of Bell pairs when the post-selection is performed. We also present properties of the pseudo entropy for random states. We then calculate the pseudo ent…
We study nuclear symmetry energy of dense matter using holographic QCD. We calculate it in a various holographic QCD models and show that the scaling index of the symmetry energy in dense medium is almost invariant under the smooth deformation of the metric as well as the embedding shape of the probe brane. We find that the scaling index depends only on the dimensionality of the branes and space-time. Therefore the scaling index of the symmetry energy characterizes the universality classes of holographic QCD models. We suggest that the scaling index might be also related to the non-fermi liqui…
We propose a way to obtain holographic cosmology models for 3+1 dimensional cosmologies vs. 3 dimensional field theories from a "dimensional reduction" procedure, obtained by integrating over the time direction, of (modifed) standard holographic duals of 3+1 dimensional field theories. The example of a modified ${\cal N}=4$ SYM vs. $AdS_5\times S^5$ is presented, and in perturbation theory doesn't match observations, though at strong coupling it might. But the proposed mechanism is more general, and it could in principle be applied to other top down holographic models.
