We construct a phenomenological scattering theory for the triangular network of valley Hall states that arises in twisted bilayer graphene under interlayer bias. Crucially, our network model includes scattering between different valley Hall states within the same valley and spin. We show that in the absence of forward scattering, symmetries reduce the network model to a single parameter that interpolates between a nested Fermi surface and flatbands, which can be understood in terms of one-dimensional chiral zigzag modes and closed triangular orbits, respectively. We demonstrate how unitarity and symmetry constrain the couplings between zigzag modes, which has important implications on the nature of interference oscillations observed in experiments.
Pressure Induced Compression of Flatbands in Twisted Bilayer Graphene
通过液压机施加可达到2.5 GPa的中等压力值,应允许获得与$\sim 1.5$ ^{ \circ } $ instead of $ \sim 1 \circ $ at zero pressure. This reduction of the moiré pattern length for larger twist angle implies an increase of the effective Coulomb interaction scale per moire cell by about 50% and enhance roughly by a factor of $ \sim 2$一样大的角度的平带,该弹性能量抵抗由于莫尔图案引起的扭曲应变。我们的研究结果表明,通过液压机在扭曲的双层石墨烯纳米器件上施加压力将显著促进探索魔角平带附近的有序相所需的器件制备工作。
Flatbands with extremely narrow bandwidths on the order of a few mili-electron volts can appear in twisted multilayer graphene systems for appropriate system parameters. Here we investigate the electronic structure of a twisted bi-bilayer graphene, or twisted double bilayer graphene, to find the parameter space where isolated flatbands can emerge as a function of twist angle, vertical pressure, and interlayer potential differences. We find that in twisted bi-bilayer graphene the bandwidth is generally flatter than in twisted bilayer graphene by roughly up to a factor of two in the same paramet…
We establish experimentally a photonic super-honeycomb lattice (sHCL) by use of a cw-laser writing technique, and thereby demonstrate two distinct flatband line states that manifest as noncontractible-loop-states in an infinite flatband lattice. These localized states (straight and zigzag lines) observed in the sHCL with tailored boundaries cannot be obtained by superposition of conventional compact localized states because they represent a new topological entity in flatband systems. In fact, the zigzag-line states, unique to the sHCL, are in contradistinction with those previously observed in…
We investigate the physics of photonic band structures of the moiré patterns that emerged when overlapping two uni-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal slabs with mismatched periods. The band structure of our system is a result of the interplay between intra-layer and inter-layer coupling mechanisms, which can be fine-tuned via the distance separating the two layers. We derive an effective Hamiltonian that captures the essential physics of the system and reproduces all numerical simulations of electromagnetic solutions with high accuracy. Most interestingly, \textit{magic distances} corresponding…
Zigzag nanoribbons of monolayer graphene-like two-dimensional materials host spontaneous edge magnetism at the zigzag terminations, whose configuration controls the band gap. In this article, the edge magnetism of zigzag nanoribbons of bilayer hexagonal crystals are studied. The specific models of bilayer graphene and bilayer silicene are both studied. As the gated voltage increases, the total energy level, magnetic structure and band structures of the ground state and the first quasi-stable excited state are tuned. For certain region of the gated voltage, the band gaps of spin up and down are…
The nature of the insulating and superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene systems is intensely debated. While many works seek for explanations in the few flat bands near the Fermi level, theory and a number of experiments suggest that nontwisted bilayer graphene systems do exhibit - or are at least close to - an ordered, insulating ground state related to antiferromagnetic ordering. Here we investigate in which ways this magnetic ordering scenario is affected by the slight twisting between the layers. We find that at charge neutrality the ordering tendencies of twisted systems interp…
Moiré flatbands, occurring, e.g., in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angles, have attracted ample interest due to their high degree of experimental tunability and the intriguing possibility of generating novel strongly interacting phases. Here we consider the core problem of Coulomb interactions within fractionally filled spin and valley polarized Moiré flatbands and demonstrate that the dual description in terms of holes, which acquire a nontrivial hole dispersion, provides key physical intuition and enables the use of standard perturbative techniques for this strongly correlated problem. I…

Ultraflatbands that have been theoretically and experimentally detected in a bunch of van der Waals stacked materials showing some peculiar properties, for instance, highly localized electronic states and enhanced electron-electron interactions. In this Letter, using an accurate tight-binding model, we study the formation and evolution of ultraflatbands in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) under low rotation angles. We find that, unlike in twisted bilayer graphene, ultraflatbands exist in TMDCs for almost any small twist angles and their wave function becomes more localized when the rot…
We investigate transport in the network of valley Hall states that emerges in minimally twisted bilayer graphene under interlayer bias. To this aim, we construct a scattering theory that captures the network physics. In the absence of forward scattering, symmetries constrain the network model to a single parameter that interpolates between one-dimensional chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, we show how the coupling of zigzag modes affects magnetotransport. In particular, we find that scattering between parallel zigzag channels gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations that a…
We construct a two-channel scattering model for the triangular network of valley Hall states in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene from symmetry arguments and investigate electronic transport in a four-terminal setup. In the absence of forward scattering, a single phenomenological parameter tunes the network between a triplet of chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, the chiral zigzag modes give rise to robust Aharonov-Bohm resonances in the longitudinal conductance in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field or an in-plane electric field. Interestingly…
Using a multiscale computational approach, we probe the origin and evolution of ultraflatbands in moiré superlattices of twisted bilayer MoS$_2$, a prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide. Unlike twisted bilayer graphene, we find no unique magic angles in twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ for flatband formation. Ultraflatbands form at the valence band edge for twist angles ($θ$) close to 0$^\circ$ and at both the valence and conduction band edges for $θ$ close to 60$^\circ$, and have distinct origins. For$ θ$ close to 0$^\circ$, inhomogeneous hybridization in the reconstructed moiré superlattice is…
We study the effect of electron-acoustic phonon interactions in twisted bilayer graphene on resistivity in the high-temperature transport and superconductivity in the low-temperature phase diagram. We theoretically show that twisted bilayer graphene should have an enhanced and strongly twist-angle dependent linear-in-temperature resistivity in the metallic regime with the resistivity magnitude increasing as the twist angle approaches the magic angle. The slope of the resistivity versus temperature could approach one hundred ohms per kelvin with a strong angle dependence, but with a rather weak…
This paper presents a mathematical and numerical analysis of the flatband wavefunctions occurring in the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic" twist angles. We show that the chiral model possesses an exact intra-valley inversion symmetry. Writing the flatband wavefunction as a product of a lowest Landau level quantum Hall state and a spinor, we show that the components of the spinor are anti-quantum Hall wavefunctions related by the inversion symmetry operation introduced here. We then show numerically that as one moves from the lowest to higher magic angles, the spinor compo…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag bilayer phosphorene nanoribbons (ZBPNR). We first, draw an analogy between the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder and ZBPNR edge states and obtain their corresponding band structure and wave functions analytically. Then, by applying the energy filtering method, we show that the electric power and thermoelectric efficiency of the ZBPNRs can be improved remarkably in the presence of mid-gap edge states. We also argue how to engineer the edge modes to further optimize thermoelectric power and efficiency of the system by …
We investigated the emergence of spin spiral ground state induced by the electric field in the bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons for the ferromagnetic edge states. To do that, we employed the generalized Bloch theorem to create flat spiral alignments for all the magnetic moments of carbon atoms at the edges within a constraint scheme approach. While the small ribbon width can preserve the ferromagnetic ground state, the large one shows the spiral ground state starting from a certain value of the electric field. We also pointed out that the spiral ground state is caused by the reduction of sp…
Moiré patterns are known to confine electronic states in transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers, thus generalizing the notion of magic angles discovered in twisted bilayer graphene to semiconductors. Here, we present a revised Slater-Koster tight-binding model that facilitates the first reliable and systematic studies of such states in twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ for the whole range of rotation angles $θ$. We show that isolated bands appear at low energy for $θ\lesssim 5 - 6^\circ$. Moreover, these bands become "flatbands", characterized by a vanishing average velocity, for the smallest angles $…
Stacking two-dimensional layered materials such as graphene and transitional metal dichalcogenides with nonzero interlayer twist angles has recently become attractive because of the emergence of novel physical properties. Stacking of one-dimensional nanomaterials offers the lateral stacking offset as an additional parameter for modulating the resulting material properties. Here, we report that the edge states of twisted bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons (TBZGNRs) can be tuned with both the twist angle and the stacking offset. Strong edge state variations in the stacking region are first reve…
Twistronic has recently attracted tremendous attention because the twisting can engineer the bilayer graphene-like materials into varying types of strongly correlated phases. In this paper, we study the twisting of bilayer graphene (BLG) quantum dots (QDs) with hexagonal shape and zigzag edges. In the untwisted BLG-QDs, the zigzag edges of graphene host spontaneous magnetism with varying magnetic configurations. As a BLG-QD being adiabatically twisted, the quantum state evolves as a function of the twisting angle. If the twisting angle changes across certain critical value, the magnetic config…
In the emerging world of twisted bilayer structures, the possible configurations are limitless, which enables for a rich landscape of electronic properties. In this paper, we focus on twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and study its properties by means of an accurate tight-binding model. We build structures with different angles and find that the so-called flatbands emerge when the twist angle is sufficiently small (around 7.3$^{\circ}$). Interestingly, the band gap can be tuned up to a 2.2\% (51 meV) when the twist angle in the relaxed sample varies from 21.8$^{\circ}$ t…
In the presence of the Hubbard interaction, graphene zigzag nanoribbons have spontaneous edge magnetism with anti-parallel configuration, whose amplitude can be tuned by a transversal electric field. As the electric field increases or decreases across a critical value, the edges are demagnetized or re-magnetized, respectively. A magnetic field at each edge determines the orientation of the re-magnetization. Thus, a combination of slowly varying transversal electric field and magnetic field in monolayer graphene zigzag nanoribbon could drive the quantum system into a bistability loop. The same …
We present an elaborate and systematic study of the conductance properties of a zigzag bilayer graphene nanoribbon modeled by a Kane-Mele (KM) Hamiltonian. The interplay of the Rashba and the intrinsic spin-orbit couplings with the edge states, electronic band structures, charge and spin transport are explored in details. We have analytically derived the conditions for the edge states for a bilayer KM nanoribbon and show how these modes decay for lattice sites inside the bulk. It is particularly interesting to note that for a finite-size ribbon an even number of zigzag ribbon hosts a finite en…
This work investigates the electronic properties of the energy spectrum of a hybrid system composed of (i) a circular quantum dot of monolayer graphene surrounded by an infinite sheet of AA-stacked bilayer graphene and (ii) a circular quantum dot of AA-stacked graphene bilayer surrounded by infinite monolayer graphene. We establish analytical findings for the related energy levels and wave functions using the continuum model and the zigzag boundary conditions at the graphene monolayer-bilayer interface. We investigate the effects of perpendicular magnetic, dot radius, and electrical fields on …
We study edge states in AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) ribbon where the Chern number of the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) bulk Hamiltonian is zero. The existence and topological features of edge states when two layers ended with the same or different edge terminations (zigzag, bearded, armchair) are discussed. The edge states (non-dispersive bands near the Fermi level) are states localized at the edge of graphene nanoribbon that only exists in certain range of momentum $k_y$. Their existence near the Fermi level are protected by the chiral symmetry with topology well described by coupl…
We show that a domain wall separating single layer graphene (SLG) and AA-stacked bilayer graphene (AA-BLG) can be used to generate highly collimated electron beams which can be steered by a magnetic field. Such system exists in two distinct configurations, namely, locally delaminated AA-BLG and terminated AA-BLG whose terminal edge-type can be either zigzag or armchair. We investigate the electron scattering using semi-classical dynamics and verify the results independently with wave-packed dynamics simulations. We find that the proposed system supports two distinct types of collimated beams t…
Dirac points are found to emerge due to the crossing of bands in the electronic structure of bilayer graphene for configurations in which the alignment between two hexagonal lattices preserves the parallelism of the armchair/zigzag lines between two layers. On the base of electronic calculations using a tight-binding model for the $π$ bands it is shown that the crossing of the energy-band dispersion curves occurs in the vicinity of the corner points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Group representation theory analysis confirms the emergence of such Dirac points. It is demonstrated that the ban…
