We derive a Hamiltonian formulation of the theory of gauge invariant, linear perturbations in anisotropic Bianchi I spacetimes, and describe how to quantize this system. The matter content is assumed to be a minimally coupled scalar field with potential $V(ϕ)$. We show that a Bianchi I spacetime generically induces both anisotropies and quantum entanglement on cosmological perturbations, and provide the tools to compute the details of these features. We then apply this formalism to a scenario in which the inflationary era is preceded by an anisotropic Bianchi I phase, and discuss the potential imprints in observable quantities. The formalism developed here paves the road to a simultaneous canonical quantization of both the homogeneous degrees of freedom and the perturbations, a task that we develop in a companion paper.
The effects of noncommutativity in the phase-space of the classical and quantum cosmology of Bianchi models are investigated. Exact solutions in both commutative and noncommutative cases are presented and compared. Further, the Noether symmetries of the Bianchi class A spacetimes are studied in both cases and similarities and differences are discussed.
The maximal globally hyperbolic development of non-Taub-NUT Bianchi IX vacuum initial data and of non-NUT Bianchi VIII vacuum initial data is C2 inextendible. Furthermore, a curvature invariant is unbounded in the incomplete directions of inextendible causal geodesics.
The geodesic-light-cone (GLC) coordinates are a useful tool to analyse light propagation and observations in cosmological models. In this article, we propose a detailed, pedagogical, and rigorous introduction to this coordinate system, explore its gauge degrees of freedom, and emphasize its interest when geometric optics is at stake. We then apply the GLC formalism to the homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi I cosmology. More than a simple illustration, this application (i) allows us to show that the Weinberg conjecture according to which gravitational lensing does not affect the proper area of…
We will present a complete set of equations, in the form of an Einstein-Bianchi system, that describe the evolution of generic smooth lattices in spacetime. All 20 independent Riemann curvatures will be evolved in parallel with the leg-lengths of the lattice. We will show that the evolution equations for the curvatures forms a hyperbolic system and that the associated constraints are preserved. This work is a generalisation of our previous paper arXiv:1101.3171 on the Einstein-Bianchi system for the Schwarzschild spacetime to general 3+1 vacuum spacetimes.
Pick an arbitrary timelike geodesic in an arbitrary spacetime. We demonstrate that there is a particular limiting process, an "ultra-local limit", in which the immediate neighborhood of the timelike geodesic can be "blown up" to yield a general (typically non-diagonal) Bianchi type I spacetime. This process shares some (but definitely not all) of the features of the Penrose limit, whereby the immediate neighborhood of an arbitrary null geodesic is "blown up" to yield a pp-wave as a limit.
Within the scope of a Bianchi type-II (BII) cosmological model we study the role of a nonlinear spinor field in the evolution of the Universe. The system allows exact solutions only for some special choice of spinor field nonlinearity.
Global existence to the coupled Einstein-Maxwell system which rules the dynamics of a kind of charged matter with a pseudo-tensor of pressure is proved, in Bianchi I-VIII spacetimes. We study the geodesics completeness, the asymptotic behavior, the positivity conditions, and we prove that the problem is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard.
We show that the classification of Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi Types I and III spacetimes admitting Matter Collineations (MCs) presented in a recent paper by Camci et al. [Camci, U., and Sharif, M. {Matter Collineations in Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi Types I and III Spacetimes}, 2003 Gen. Relativ. Grav. vol. 35, 97-109] is incomplete. Furthermore for these spacetimes and when the Einstein tensor is non-degenerate, we give the complete Lie Algebra of MCs and the algebraic constraints on the spatial components of the Einstein tensor.
Quantum theory of a scalar field is developed on the LQC Bianchi I space-time. By comparing the the quantum field theory for a single mode on classical and quantum background geometries we find that an effective Bianchi I space-time emerges. We show that by disregarding the back-reaction no Lorentz-violation is present, despite the effective metric being different than the classical Bianchi I one.
We use exact general solutions for the spatially flat FRW and the anisotropic Bianchi I cosmologies to show that generically uncoupled scalar fields cooperate to make inflation more probable, while the presence of several interacting fields hinders the occurrence of the phenomenon, in accordance with previous results based on particular power-law solutions. Similar conclusions are reached in the case of Bianchi VI$_0$ spacetimes, for power-law solutions which are proved to be attractors.
We study the asymptotic dynamics of $f(T, B)$-theory in an anisotropic Bianchi III background geometry. We show that an attractor always exists for the field equations, which depends on a free parameter provided by the specific $f(T, B)$ functional form. The attractor is an accelerated spatially flat FLRW or non-accelerated LRS Bianchi III geometry. Consequently, the $f(T, B)$-theory provides a spatially flat and isotropic accelerated Universe.
The second Bianchi identity can be recast as an evolution equation for the Riemann curvatures. Here we will report on such a system for a vacuum static spherically symmetric spacetime. This is the first of two papers. In the following paper we will extend the ideas developed here to general vacuum spacetimes. In this paper we will demonstrate our ideas on a Schwarzschild spacetime and give detailed numerical results. For suitable choices of lapse function we find that the system gives excellent results with long term stability.
The aim of this paper is to explore teleparallel conformal Killing vector fields (CKVFs) of locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type V spacetimes in the context of teleparallel gravity and compare the obtained results with those of general relativity. The general solution of teleparallel conformal Killing's equations is found in terms of some unknown functions of t and x , along with a set of integrability conditions. The integrability conditions are solved in some particular cases to get the final form of teleparallel CKVFs. It is observed that the LRS Bianchi type V spacetimes admit…
The present work is related to anisotropic cosmological evolution in metric $f(R)$ theory of gravity. The initial part of the paper develops the general cosmological dynamics of homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi-I spacetime in $f(R)$ cosmology. The anisotropic spacetime is pervaded by a barotropic fluid which has isotropic pressure. The paper predicts nonlinear growth of anisotropy in such spacetimes. In the later part of the paper we display the predictive power of the nonlinear differential equation responsible for the cosmological anisotropy growth in various relevant cases. We present the ex…
The form and application of the Lanczos potential for Bianchi spacetime are studied. The Lanczos potential is found in some specific cases then the general case studied. It leads to two coupled first order partial differential equations which although they so far have not been solved in general can be solved for many configurations. The application is to cosmic energetics: in other words to the study of the energy of the gravitational and other fields in the Universe.
The Noether symmetry approach is useful tool to restrict the arbitrariness in a gravity theory when the equations of motion are underdetermined due to the high number of functions to be determined in the ansatz. We consider two scalar-coupled theories of gravity, one motivated by induced gravity, the other more standard; in Bianchi I, Bianchi III and Kantowski-Sachs cosmological models. For these models, we present a full set of Noether gauge symmetries, which are more general than those obtained by the strict Noether symmetry approach in our recent work. Some exact solutions are derived using…
We study the asymptotic behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. It has been conjectured that this behavior is driven by a certain circle map, called the Kasner map. As a step towards this conjecture, we prove that some orbits of the Kasner map do indeed attract some solutions of the system of ODEs which describes the behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. The orbits of the Kasner map for which we can prove such a result are those which are not periodic and which do not accumulate on any periodic orbit. This shows the existence of Bianchi spacetimes with a aperiodic oscillatory asy…

Vacuum polarization of the quantized massive fields in Bianchi type I spacetime is investigated from the point of view of the adiabatic approximation and the Schwinger-DeWitt method. It is shown that both approaches give the same results that can be used in construction of the trace of the stress-energy tensor of the conformally coupled fields. The stress-energy tensor is calculated in the Bianchi type I spacetime and the back reaction of the quantized fields upon the Kasner geometry is studied. A special emphasis is put on the problem of isotropization, studied with the aid of the directional…
A two-component formulation of the Klein-Gordon equation is used to investigate the cyclic and noncyclic adiabatic geometric phases due to spatially homogeneous (Bianchi) cosmological models. It is shown that no adiabatic geometric phases arise for Bianchi type I models. For general Bianchi type IX models the problem of the adiabatic geometric phase is shown to be equivalent to the one for nuclear quadrupole interactions of a spin. For these models nontrivial non-Abelian adiabatic geometrical phases may occur in general.
Within the scope of Bianchi type-III spacetime we study the role of spinor field on the evolution of the Universe as well as the influence of gravity on the spinor field. In doing so we have considered a polynomial type of nonlinearity. In this case the spacetime remains locally rotationally symmetric and anisotropic all the time. It is found that depending on the sign of nonlinearity the models allows both accelerated and oscillatory modes of expansion. The non-diagonal components of energy-momentum tensor though impose some restrictions on metric functions and components of spinor field, unl…
Within the scope of Bianchi type-I cosmological model the role of spinor field on the evolution of the Universe is investigated. In doing so we have considered a polynomial type of nonlinearity. It is found that depending on the sign of self-coupling constant the model allows either accelerated mode of expansion or oscillatory mode of evolution. Unlike general Bianchi type-I and Bianchi type $VI_0$ models in this case neither mass term nor the nonlinear term in the Lagrangian of spinor field vanish.
We present an analysis of the Kretschmann and Weyl squared scalars for the general Bianchi IX model filled with tilted dust. Particular attention is given to the asymptotic regime close to the singularity for which we provide heuristic considerations supported by numerical simulations. The present paper is an extension of our earlier publication [1].
We determine the conformal algebra of Bianchi III and Bianchi V spacetimes or, equivalently, we determine all Bianchi III and Bianchi V spacetimes which admit a proper conformal Killing vector. The algorithm that we use has been developed in Class. Quantum. Grav. 15, 2909 (1998) and concerns the computation of the CKVs of decomposable spacetimes. The main point of this method is that a decomposable space admits a CKV if the reduced space admits a gradient homothetic vector the latter being possible only if the reduced space is flat or a space of constant curvature. We apply this method in a st…
Symmetries of geometrical and physical quantities in general relativity provide important information about the curvature structure of the spacetimes. Symmetries of the curvature and the Weyl tensors, known as curvature and Weyl collineations respectively, are two of such important symmetries. Some results on these symmetries for Bianchi type V spacetimes are discussed.
In this paper, we present a complete classification of Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type I spacetimes according to their Conformal Ricci Collineations (CRCs). When the Ricci tensor is non-degenerate, a general form of the vector field generating CRCs is found, subject to some integrability conditions. Solving the integrability conditions in different cases, it is found that the LRS Bianchi type I spacetimes admit 7, 10, 11 or 15- dimensional Lie algebra of CRCs for the choice of non-degenerate Ricci tensor. Moreover, it is found that these spacetimes admit infinite number of CR…
Bianchi models are posited by the BKL picture to be essential building blocks towards an understanding of generic cosmological singularities. We study the behaviour of spatially homogeneous anisotropic vacuum spacetimes of Bianchi type VIII and IX, as they approach the big bang singularity. It is known since 2001 that generic Bianchi IX spacetimes converge towards the so-called Mixmaster attractor as time goes towards the singularity. We extend this result to the case of Bianchi VIII vacuum. The BKL picture suggests that particle horizons should form, i.e. spatially separate regions should cau…
We show that the complex dynamics of the general Bianchi IX universe in the vicinity of the spacelike singularity can be approximated by a simplified system of equations. Our analysis is mainly based on numerical simulations. The properties of the solution space can be studied by using this simplified dynamics. Our results will be useful for the quantization of the general Bianchi IX model.
We study past-directed extendibility of Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) and Bianchi type I spacetimes with a scale factor vanishing in the past. We give criteria for determining whether a boundary for past-directed incomplete geodesics is a parallelly propagated curvature singularity, which cannot necessarily be read off from scalar curvature invariants. It is clarified that, for incomplete FLRW spacetime to avoid the singularity, the spacetime necessarily reduces to the Milne universe or flat de Sitter universe toward the boundary. For incomplete Bianchi type I spacetime to be free…
Motivated by the recent interest in dynamical properties of topologically nontrivial spacetimes, we study linear perturbations of spatially closed Bianchi III vacuum spacetimes, whose spatial topology is the direct product of a higher genus surface and the circle. We first develop necessary mode functions, vectors, and tensors, and then perform separations of (perturbation) variables. The perturbation equations decouple in a way that is similar to but a generalization of those of the Regge--Wheeler spherically symmetric case. We further achieve a decoupling of each set of perturbation equation…
We investigate the $ϕ^2$ inflationary model in the Bianchi-I spacetime using effective spacetime description of loop quantum cosmology to understand the issues of the resolution of initial singularity, isotropization, effect of anisotropies on amount of inflation, and the phase space attractors in the presence of non-perturbative quantum gravitational modifications. A comparative analysis with the classical theory by including more general initial conditions than the ones previously considered in the latter is also performed. We show that, in general, the classical singularity is replaced by a…
Anisotropies generically dominate the earliest stages of expansion of a homogeneous universe. They are particularly relevant in bouncing models, since shears grow in the contracting phase of the cosmos, making the isotropic situation unstable. This paper extends the study of cosmological perturbations in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) to anisotropic Bianchi I models that contain a bounce followed by a phase of slow-roll inflation. We show that, although the shear tensor dilutes and the universe isotropizes soon after the bounce, cosmic perturbations retain memory of this short anisotropic phase.…
The application of the divergence theorem in a non-coordinated basis is shown to lead to a corrected variational principle for Class B Bianchi cosmological models. This variational principle is used to construct a Hamiltonian formulation for diagonal and symmetric vacuum Class B models. [Note: This is an unpublished paper from 1984 that might be useful to anyone interested in Class B Bianchi models.]
We develop a new method in order to classify the Bianchi I spacetimes which admit conformal Killing vectors (CKV). The method is based on two propositions which relate the CKVs of 1+(n-1) decomposable Riemannian spaces with the CKVs of the (n-1) subspace and show that if 1+(n-1) space is conformally flat then the (n-1) spacetime is maximally symmetric. The method is used to study the conformal algebra of the Kasner spacetime and other less known Bianchi type I matter solutions of General Relativity.
We study the generic resolution of strong singularities in loop quantized effective Bianchi-IX spacetime in two different quantizations - the connection operator based `A' quantization and the extrinsic curvature based `K' quantization. We show that in the effective spacetime description with arbitrary matter content, it is necessary to include inverse triad corrections to resolve all the strong singularities in the `A' quantization. Whereas in the `K' quantization these results can be obtained without including inverse triad corrections. Under these conditions, the energy density, expansion a…
We study the global dynamical behavior of spatially homogeneous solutions of the Einstein equations in Bianchi type I symmetry, where we use non-tilted elastic matter as an anisotropic matter model that naturally generalizes perfect fluids. Based on our dynamical systems formulation of the equations we are able to prove that (i) toward the future all solutions isotropize; (ii) toward the initial singularity all solutions display oscillatory behavior; solutions do not converge to Kasner solutions but oscillate between different Kasner states. This behavior is associated with energy condition vi…
Electromagnetic waves propagation on either rotating or anisotropic spacetime backgrounds (such as Kerr and Gödel metrics, or Bianchi-I metric) produce a reduction of the magnitude of Casimir forces between plates. These curved spacetimes behave as chiral or birefringent materials producing dispersion of electromagnetic waves, in such a way that right- and left-circularly polarized light waves propagate with different phase velocities. Results are explicitly calculated for discussed cases. The difference on the wavevectors of the two polarized electromagnetic waves produces an abatement of a C…
Global existence to the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Massive Scalar Field system which rules the dynamics of a kind of charged pure matter in the presence of a massive scalar field is proved, in Bianchi I-VIII spacetimes; asymptotic behaviour, geodesic completeness, energy conditions are investigated in the case of a cosmological constant bounded from below by a strictly negative constant depending only on the massive scalar field.
In this paper, the crucial phenomenon of the expansion of the universe has been discussed. For this purpose, we study the vacuum solutions of Bianchi types $I$ and $V$ spacetimes in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. In particular, we find two exact solutions in each case by using the variation law of Hubble parameter. These solutions correspond to two models of the universe. The first solution gives a singular model while the second solution provides a non-singular model. The physical behavior of these models is discussed. Moreover, the function of the Ricci scalar is evaluated for both the mod…
Generic resolution of singularities and geodesic completeness in the loop quantization of Bianchi-II spacetimes with arbitrary minimally coupled matter is investigated. Using the effective Hamiltonian approach, we examine two available quantizations: one based on the connection operator and second by treating extrinsic curvature as connection via gauge fixing. It turns out that for the connection based quantization, either the inverse triad modifications or imposition of weak energy condition is necessary to obtain a resolution of all strong singularities and geodesic completeness. In contrast…
This paper presents a computational algorithm to derive the theory of linear gauge invariant perturbations on anisotropic cosmological spacetimes of the Bianchi I type. Our code is based on the tensor algebra packages xTensor and xPert, within the computational infrastructure of xAct written in Mathematica. The algorithm is based on a Hamiltonian, or phase space formulation, and it provides an efficient and transparent way of isolating the gauge invariant degrees of freedom in the perturbation fields and to obtain the Hamiltonian generating their dynamics. The restriction to Friedmann--Lemaîtr…
The behavior of spin - 1/2 - particles in anisotropic Bianchi type I backgrounds is investigated utilizing the concept of differential forms and orthonormal frames. Specializing to the massless case and power law scale factors $α_j(t) = t^{q_j}$ of the metric where $q_1 = q_2 $, an analytical outcome for the time evolution operator in terms of Bessel functions is presented.
Within the scope of Bianchi type-VI cosmological model we study the role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe. It is found that due to the spinor affine connections the energy-momentum tensor of the spinor field possesses non-diagonal components. The non-triviality of non-diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor imposes some severe restrictions either on the spinor field or on the metric functions or on both of them. But unlike in cases of Bianchi type-I or $VI_0$, in case of Bianchi type-VI model it does not lead to the elimination of spinor field nonlinearity or mass ter…
In classical Bianchi-I spacetimes, underlying conditions for what dictates the singularity structure - whether it is anisotropic shear or energy density, can be easily determined from the generalized Friedmann equation. However, in non-singular bouncing anisotropic models these insights are difficult to obtain in the quantum gravity regime where the singularity is resolved at a non-vanishing mean volume which can be large compared to the Planck volume, depending on the initial conditions. Such non-singular models may also lack a generalized Friedmann equation making the task even more difficul…
We carry out a thorough analysis on a class of cosmological spacetimes which admit three space-like Killing vectors of Bianchi class B and contain electromagnetic fields. Using dynamical system analysis, we show that a family of vacuum plane-wave solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations is the stable attractor for expanding universes. Phase dynamics are investigated in detail for particular symmetric models. We integrate the system exactly for some special cases to confirm the qualitative features. Some of the obtained solutions have not been presented previously to the best of our knowledg…
This paper intends to obtain concircular vector fields of Kantowski Sachs and Bianch type III spacetimes. For this purpose, ten conformal Killing equations and their general solution in the form of conformal Killing vector fields are derived along with their conformal factors. The obtained conformal Killing vector fields are then placed in Hessian equations to obtain the final form of concircular vector fields. The existence of concircular symmetry imposes restrictions on the metric functions. The conditions imposing restrictions on these metric functions are obtained as a set of integrability…
Within the scope of Bianchi type-$VI_0$ spacetime we study the role of spinor field on the evolution of the Universe. It is found that the presence of nontrivial non-diagonal components of energy-momentum tensor of the spinor field plays vital role on the evolution of the Universe. As a result of their mutual influence there occur two different scenarios. In one case the invariants constructed from the bilinear forms of the spinor field become trivial, thus giving rise to a massless and linear spinor field Lagrangian. According to the second scenario massive and nonlinear terms do not vanish a…
Due to non-perturbative quantum gravitational effects, the classical big bang singularity is replaced by a quantum big bounce of the mean scale factor in loop quantization of Bianchi-I spacetime. An important issue is to understand various differences in the physical properties of the spacetime across the bounce. We investigate this issue in the context of various geometrical structures, identified by Kasner exponents of the metric, which arise on approach to the singularity in the classical theory. Using effective spacetime description of Bianchi-I model in loop quantum cosmology with dust, r…
We use Boulware's Hamiltonian formalism of quadratic gravity theories in order to analyze the classical behaviour of Bianchi cosmological models for a Lagrangian density containing quadratic terms in the curvature. For this purpose we define a canonical transformation which leads to a clear distinction between two main variants of the quadratic theory, namely the R-squared or conformal Lagrangian densities. In this paper we restrict the study to the first variant. For Bianchi type I and IX models we give the explicit forms of the super-Hamiltonian constraint, of the ADM Hamiltonian density and…
Studying Yang-Mills field and gravitational field in class A Bianchi spacetimes, we find that chaotic behavior appears in the late phase (the asymptotic future). In this phase, the Yang-Mills field behaves as that in Minkowski spacetime, in which we can understand it by a potential picture, except for the types VIII and IX. At the same time, in the initial phase (near the initial singularity), we numerically find that the behavior seems to approach the Kasner solution. However, we show that the Kasner circle is unstable and the Kasner solution is not an attractor. From an analysis of stability…
Assuming that the space-time is close to isotropic in the sense that the shear parameter is small and that the maximal velocity of the particles is bounded, we have been able to show that for non-diagonal Bianchi I-symmetric spacetimes with collisionless matter the asymptotic behaviour at late times is close to the special case of dust. We also have been able to show that all the Kasner exponents converge to 1/3 and an asymptotic expression for the induced metric has been obtained. The key was a bootstrap argument.

We discuss the question of time in a Bianchi I quantum cosmology in the framework of singularity avoidance. We show that time parameters fall into two distinct classes, that are such that the time development of the wave function either always leads to the appearance of a singularity (fast-gauge time) or that always prevents it from occurring (slow-gauge time). Furthermore, we find that, in the latter case, there exists an asymptotic regime, independent of the clock choice. This may point to a possible solution of the clock issue in quantum cosmology if there exists a suitable class of clocks …
