Martensitic transformations are strain driven displacive transitions governing the mechanical and physical properties in intermetallic materials. This is the case in Ni$_2$MnGa, where the martensite transition is at the heart of the striking magnetic shape memory and magneto-caloric properties. Interestingly, the martensitic transformation is preceded by a pre-martensite phase, and the role of this precursor and its influence on the martensitic transition and properties is still a matter of debate. In this work, we report on the influence of Co doping (Ni$_{50-x}$Co$_x$Mn$_{25}$Ga$_{25}$ with x = 3 and 5) on the martensitic transformation path in stoichiometric Ni$_2$MnGa by neutron diffraction. The use of the superspace formalism to describe the crystal structure of the modulated martensitic phases, joined with a group theoretical analysis allows unfolding the different distortions featuring the structural transitions. Finally, a general Landau thermodynamic potential of the martensitic transformation, based on the symmetry analysis is outlined. The combined use of phenomenological and crystallographic studies highlights the close relationship between the lattice distortions at the core of the Ni$_2$MnGa physical properties and, more in general, on the properties of the martensitic transformations in the Ni-Mn based Heusler systems.
The ab initio electronic structure calculations of the Ni$_{2}$MnGa The alloy indicate that the orthorhombic 4O structure exhibits the lowest energy compared to all known martensitic structures. The 4O structure is formed by nanotwin double layers, i.e., oppositely oriented nanotwins consisting of two (101) lattice planes of nonmodulated martensitic structure. It exhibits the lowest occupation of density of states at the Fermi level. The total energy 1.98 meV/atom below the energy of nonmodulated martensite is achieved within structural relaxation by shifting Mn and Ga atoms at the nanotwin bo…
We present a detailed experimental study of bulk and powder samples of the Heusler shape memory alloy Ni$_2$MnGa, including zero-field static and dynamic $^{55}$Mn NMR experiments, X-ray powder diffraction and magnetization experiments. The NMR spectra give direct access to the sequence of structural phase transitions in this compound, from the high-T austenitic phase down to the low-T martensitic phase. In addition, a detailed investigation of the so-called rf-enhancement factor provides local information for the magnetic stiffness and restoring fields for each separate coordination, structur…
The phonon dispersion relations and elastic constants for ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa in the cubic and tetragonally distorted Heusler structures are computed using density-functional and density-functional perturbation theory within the spin-polarized generalized-gradient approximation. For $0.9<c/a<1.06$, the TA$_2$ tranverse acoustic branch along $[110]$ and symmetry-related directions displays a dynamical instability at a wavevector that depends on $c/a$. Through examination of the Fermi-surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling, this is identified as a Kohn anomaly. In the parent cubic pha…
Magnetic shape memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic and structural order. To study these correlations we use time resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni$_2$MnGa film and reveal a set of timescales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300~fs with a recovery time of a f…
Ultraviolet-photoemission (UPS) measurements and supporting specific-heat, thermal-expansion, resistivity and magnetic-moment measurements are reported for the magnetic shape-memory alloy Ni$_2$MnGa over the temperature range $100K < T < 250K$. All measurements detect clear signatures of the premartensitic transition ($T_\mathrm{PM}\sim 247K$) and the martensitic transition ($T_\mathrm{M} \sim 196K$). Temperature-dependent UPS shows a dramatic depletion of states (pseudogap) at $T_\mathrm{PM}$ located 0.3eV below the Fermi energy. First-principles electronic structure calculations show that th…
Magnetism of the binary intermetallic compound MnGa$_4$ is re-investigated. Band-structure calculations predict antiferromagnetic behavior in contrast to Pauli paramagnetism reported previously. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on single crystals indeed reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N=393$ K. Neutron powder diffraction and $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy show collinear antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments alligned along the [111] direction of the cubic unit cell. The magnetic moment of 0.80(3)$μ_B$ at 1.5 K extracted from the neutron data is i…
In this paper, we present temperature and field dependent neutron diffraction (ND) study to unravel the structural and the magnetic properties in Ni50Mn38Sb12 Heusler system. This alloy shows martensitic transition from high temperature austenite cubic phase to low temperature martensite orthorhombic phase on cooling. At 3 K, the lattice parameters and magnetic moments are found to be almost insensitive to field. Just below the martensitic transition temperature, the martensite phase fraction is found to be 85%. Upon applying the field, the austenite phase becomes dominant, and the field induc…
A three-dimensional phase-field model is proposed for simulating the magnetic martensitic phase transformation. The model considers a paramagnetic cubic austenite to ferromagnetic tetragonal martensite transition, as it occurs in magnetic Heusler alloys like Ni2 MnGa, and is based on a Landau 2-3-4 polynomial with temperature dependent coefficients. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition is recaptured by interpolating the micromagnetic energy as a function of the order parameter for the ferroelastic domains. The model is numerically implemented in real space by finite element (FE) method. F…
The present study is dedicated to the influence of different substrate and buffer layer materials on the martensitic transformation in sputter deposited epitaxial shape memory Heusler alloys. For this, the magnetocaloric Heusler alloy Ni-Co-Mn-Al \cite{Teichert2015b} is grown on MgO(001), MgAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$(001), and MgO(001)/V substrates, which exhibit a lattice misfit to the Ni-Co-Mn-Al between $-1.2\%$ and $3.6\%$. By temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements it is shown that the optimum buffer layer for shape memory Heusler films is not one with minimum lattice misfit, but one wi…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs), and even medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), are an intriguing class of materials in that structure and property relations can be controlled via alloying and chemical disorder over wide ranges in the composition space. Employing density-functional theory combined with the coherent-potential approximation to average over all chemical configurations, we tune free energies between face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phases in Fe$_{x}$Mn$_{80-x}$Co$_{10}$Cr$_{10}$ systems.~Within Fe-Mn-based alloys, we show that the martensitic transformation and chemic…
The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-…
The structure, magnetic and martensitic properties of Fe doped Ni-Mn-In magnetic shape memory alloys have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetization, resistivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EXAFS. While Ni$_{2}$MnIn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ ($0 \le x \le 0.6$) alloys are ferromagnetic and non martensitic, the martensitic transformation temperature in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.5} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ and Ni$_{2}$Mn$ _{1.6} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ increases for lower Fe concentrations ($y \le 0.05$) before decreasing sharply for higher Fe concentrations. XRD analysis reveals presence of cubic and …
Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements have been carried out on Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$Sn$_{15}$ in the austenitic and martensitic phase. The temperatures associated with structural and magnetic phase transformations are obtained from magnetization measurements. The system orders ferromagnetically below 319 K while the structural phase transition occurs at T$_M$ $\sim$ 200 K. EXAFS measurements have been carried out at Mn and Ni K-edges and changes associated with respect to the local structure of these absorbing atoms are compared. Significant changes in the nearest neighbou…
This paper addresses martensitic precursor phenomena from new theoretical and experimental perspectives. Driven by a phonon domain hypothesis, based on the premise of incomplete phonon softening, and employing Born's dynamical approach to statistical mechanics of anharmonic crystal lattices, we develop a Gruneisen-type phonon theory that predicts a pre-martensitic transition via "spinodal decomposition" of phonon populations and, without resort to static defects, explains the precursor "anomalies" on the same physical footing of thermal expansion, both being intrinsic properties of anharmonic …

We propose a mathematical description of crystal structure: underlying translational periodicity together with the distinct atomic positions up to the symmetry operations in the unit cell. It is consistent with the international table of crystallography. By the Cauchy-Born hypothesis, such a description can be integrated with the theory of continuum mechanics to calculate a derived crystal structure produced by solid-solid phase transformation. In addition, we generalize the expressions for orientation relationship between the parent lattice and the derived lattice. The derived structure ratio…
We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic and structural properties of the shape-memory Heusler alloy Ni50Mn35In15. Magnetization and x-ray diffraction experiments were performed at hydrostatic pressures up to 5 GPa using diamond anvil cells. Pressure stabilizes the martensitic phase, shifting the martensitic transition to higher temperatures and suppresses the ferromagnetic austenitic phase. Above ~3 GPa, where the martensitic-transition temperature approaches the Curie temperature in the austenite, the magnetization shows no indication of ferromagnetic ordering anymore. We…
In an effort to produce Giant Magnetocaloric effect (GMCE) near room temperature, in a first ever such study, the austenite transformation temperature (As) was fine tuned to ferromagnetic Curie temperature (TC) in Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (FSMA) and a large GMCE of delta-SM = - 81.75 J/Kg-K was achieved in Ni50Mn18.5Cu6.5Ga25 alloy during reverse martensitic transformation (heating cycle) for a magnetic field change of 9 T at 302.5 K. Fine tuning of As with TC was achieved by Cu substitution in Ni50Mn25-xCuxGa25 (0< x < 7.0)-based FSMAs. Characterizations of these alloys were carried …
We show that the selected area diffraction patterns presented in a recent paper (T. Liu et al. Sci. Rep. 2015 5, 15331) do not prove the existence of a new hexagonal phase in martensitic steels. They can be actually simulated by twin effects.
The martensitic transformation is a fundamental physical phenomenon at the origin of important industrial applications. However, the underlying microscopic mechanism, which is of critical importance to explain the outstanding mechanical properties of martensitic materials, is still not fully understood. This is because for most martensitic materials the transformation is a fast process that makes in situ studies extremely challenging. Noble solids krypton and xenon undergo a progressive pressure induced fcc to hcp martensitic transition with a very wide coexistence domain. Here, we took advant…
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
Structural martensitic transformations enable various applications, which range from high stroke actuation and sensing to energy efficient magnetocaloric refrigeration and thermomagnetic energy harvesting. All these emerging applications benefit from a fast transformation, but up to now the speed limit of martensitic transformations has not been explored. Here, we demonstrate that a martensite to austenite transformation can be completed in under ten nanoseconds. We heat an epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga film with a laser pulse and use synchrotron diffraction to probe the influence of initial sample tempe…
The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temperature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic …
Fe doped Ni$_2$Mn$_{1.5}$In$_{0.5}$, particularly, Ni$_2$Mn$_{1.4}$Fe$_{0.1}$In$_{0.5}$, despite having an incommensurate, modulated 7M martensitic structure at room temperature exhibits frequency dependent behavior of storage modulus and loss that obeys Vogel-Fulcher law as well as shows ergodicity breaking between zero field cooled and field cooled strain measurements just above the transition temperature. Both, frequency dependence and ergodicity breaking are characteristics of a strain glassy phase and occur due to presence of strain domains which are large enough to present signatures of …
The high-pressure phase stability of the metastable tetragonal zirconia is still under debate. The transition dynamics of shocked Y2O3 (3 mol%) stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics under laser-shock compression has been directly studied using nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase transformation to the monoclinic phase, which is the stable phase for pure zirconia at ambient pressure and room temperature, has been observed during compression at 5 GPa within 20 ns without any intermediates. This monoclinic phase reverts back to the tetragonal phase during pressure r…
Magnetic, transport, and x-ray diffraction measurements of ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni$_{2.16}$Mn$_{0.84}$Ga revealed that this alloy undergoes an intermartensitic transition upon cooling, whereas no such a transition is observed upon subsequent heating. The difference in the modulation of the martensite forming upon cooling from the high-temperature austenitic state [5-layered (5M) martensite], and the martensite forming upon the intermartensitic transition [7-layered (7M) martensite] strongly affects the magnetic and transport properties of the alloy and results in a large thermal hy…
The martensitic and magnetic phase transformations in MnNiGe1-xSnx (0 \leq x \leq 0.200) alloys were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and magnetization measurements. Results indicate that the increasing Sn substitution in MnNiGe1-xSnx results in (i) decrease of martensitic transformation temperature from 460 to 100 K and (ii) conversion of AFM spiral to antiparallel AFM strcuture in martensite. Based on these, the remarkable magnetic-field-induced PM/spiral-AFM and FM/AFM magnetostructural transformations and, large positive and negative magnetoca…
The large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) observed in Ni-Mn based shape-memory Heusler alloys put them forward to use in magnetic refrigeration technology. It is associated with a first-order magnetostructural (martensitic) phase transition. We conducted a comprehensive study of the MCE for the off-stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni$_{2.2}$Mn$_{0.8}$Ga in the vicinity of its first-order magnetostructural phase transition. We found a reversible MCE under repeated magnetic field cycles. The reversible behavior can be attributed to the small thermal hysteresis of the martensitic phase transition. Based …
The temperature dependent crystal structure analysis in martensitic phase of Ni_2Mn_(1+x)Sn_(1-x) (x = 0.40 and 0.44) magnetic shape memory alloy is performed using X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase consists of 4-Layered and 14-Layered orthorhombic structure. The phase fraction of 4-layered and 14-layered orthorhombic structure change with temperature. Interestingly, the magnetic property also changes with temperature and corresponds to structural change temperature. Thus, the exchange coupling constant between original Mn and substituted Mn is calculated, which shows that the 4-layered…
Epitaxial films have the potential to be used as model systems for fundamental investigations on the martensitic transformation in binary NiTi. In this paper, we discuss growth of binary NiTi thin films on single crystalline MgO substrates. Sputter deposition is used to grow NiTi films. Films prepared by complementary preparation routes (with different deposition temperatures and subsequent heat treatments) are investigated by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrical resistivity measurements, with the aim of optimizing film properties, particularly to obt…
Ageing mechanisms of the U-5\,\%wtNb system have been investigated on samples exposed to temperatures of 150$\,^{\circ}$C for up to 5000\,hours. A variety of surface and bulk analytic techniques have been used to investigate phase, chemical and crystallographic changes. Characterisation of microstructural evolution was carried out through secondary electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). This investigation suggests crystallographic defects such as twinning…
A class of Fe-Mn-Si-based alloys exhibits a reversible martensitic transformation between the $γ$ phase with a face-centered cubic~(fcc) structure and an $ε$ phase with a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure. During the deformation-induced $γ$--$ε$ transformation, we identified a phase that is different from the $ε$ phase. In this new phase, the electron diffraction spots are located at the 1/3 positions that correspond to the $\{$0002$\}$ plane of the $ε$ (hcp) phase with 2H structure, which suggests long-period stacking order (LPSO). To understand the stacking pattern and explore the possi…
The locally varying tetragonality in martensite grains of a high-carbon steel (1.2 mass percent C) was resolved by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) with a spatial resolution in the order of 100nm. Compared to spatially integrating X-ray diffraction, which yielded an average tetragonality of c/a=1.05, the EBSD measurements in the scanning electron microscope allowed to image a local variation of the lattice parameter ratio c/a in the range of 1.02 $\leq$ c/a $\leq$ 1.07. The local variation of tetragonality is confirmed by two different EBSD data analysis approaches based on the fitting …
This work integrates in-situ neutron diffraction and crystal plasticity finite element modeling to study the kinematic stability of retained austenite in high carbon bearing steels. The presence of a kinematically metastable retained austenite in bearing steels can significantly affect the macro-mechanical and micro-mechanical material response. Mechanical characterization of metastable austenite is a critical component in accurately capturing the micro-mechanical behavior under typical application loads. Traditional mechanical characterization techniques are unable to discretely quantify the …
The structural phase transformation in the La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 perovskite manganite was studied by ultrasound, neutron diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. Minima of the velocity and maxima of the decrement of the ultrasound point out the structural transition temperature Ts=200 K. The hysteretic temperature behavior and giant alteration of the ultrasound velocity and decrement present an evidence of martensitic character of the phase transition at a macroscopic level. The martensitic transformation in La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 is tightly connected with electronic transitions in both coexisting hig…
Polycrystalline samples of Co$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$MnGe ($x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.22$ and 0.35), prepared by arc melting under argon atmosphere, have been annealed at 1123 K with final furnace cooling. The samples have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (in function of temperature) and ac magnetic measurements (in function of temperature and applied hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar). On the basis of the experimental data, the $(p,T)$ phase diagrams have been determined. For the low Cu content ($x=0.05$, 0.10 and 0.15), the compounds show a martensitic transition between the low-temperature …
The nature of the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) transition accompanied by orbital order-disorder in Nd1-xCaxMnO3 has been studied by high temperature (300 - 1200K) synchrotron and laboratory X-ray powder diffraction in the low doping region (0<x<0.1). For very low doping a large temperature range of phase coexistence associated with a first-order transition has been observed, resembling a martensitic transformation. The transition appears continuous because of a gradual evolution of the volume fractions of the phases over a broad temperature interval. The first-order nature of the transition an…
Magnetic phase diagrams of the metamagnetic shape memory alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7) were produced from high-field magnetization measurements up to 56 T. For both compounds, magnetic field induced martensitic transformations are observed at various temperatures below 300 K. Hysteresis of the field-induced transformation shows unconventional temperature dependence: it decreases with decreasing temperature after showing a peak. Magnetic susceptibility measurement, microscopy, and X-ray diffraction data suggest a model incorporating the magnetic anisotropy and Zeeman energy in tw…
Stress-induced martensitic transformations enable metastable alloys to exhibit enhanced strain hardening capacity, leading to improved formability and toughness. As is well-known from transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, however, the resulting martensite can limit ductility and fatigue life due to its intrinsic brittleness. In this work, we explore an alloy design strategy that utilizes stress-induced martensitic transformations but does not retain the martensite phase. This strategy is based on the introduction of superelastic nano-precipitates, which exhibit reverse transformatio…

The structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of epitaxial Ni-Co-Mn-Al thin films with different compositions have been studied. The films were deposited on MgO(001) substrates by co-sputtering on heated substrates. All films show a martensitic transformation, where the transformation temperatures are strongly dependent on the composition. The structure of the martensite phase is shown to be 14M. The metamagnetic martensitic transformation occurs from strongly ferromagnetic austenite to weakly magnetic martensite. The structural properties of the films were investigated by atomic for…
The structural transitions, magnetic properties, and electronic structures of Co(Fe)-doped MnNiSi compounds are investigated by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), magnetic measurements, and first-principles calculations. Results indicate that all samples undergo a martensitic transition from the Ni2In-type parent phase to TiNiSi-type orthorhombic phase at high temperatures. The substitution of Co(Fe) for Mn in Mn1-xCoxNiSi (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) and Mn1-yFeyNiSi (y = 0.26, 0.30, 0.36, 0.46, 0.55) samples decreases the structural transition temperature (Tt) an…
Aiming at increasing the yield strength of transformation and twinning induced plasticity (TRIP and TWIP) titanium alloys, a dual-phase $α$/$β$ alloy is designed and studied. The composition Ti 7Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) is proposed, based on an approach coupling Calphad calculations and classical Bo-Md design tool used in Ti-alloys. Its microstructure is made of 20% of $α$ precipitates in a $β$ matrix, the matrix having optimal Bo and Md parameters for deformation twinning and martensitic transformation. The alloy indeed displays a yield strength of 760 MPa, about 200 MPa above that of a Ti 8.5Cr 1.5Sn…
We apply a general first-principles approach to derive the phase diagram of metallic Lithium at ambient pressure between 0 and 350 K, including identification of candidate phases. We use ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS) to identify competing phases and supplement the results with calculations of vibrational properties and relevant derived neutron diffraction patterns. Strong quantum nuclear effects are present, prompting a careful treatment of vibrations. We directly map the Born-Oppenheimer surface of Li for the first time, allowing the extension of the normal quasi-harmonic treat…
We have systemically studied the effects of annealing temperature and alloy composition on the structural and magnetic properties of bulk Ni$_{2}$MnGe and Ni$_{2.1}$Mn$_{0.9}$Ge Heusler alloys. We have observed that both annealing temperature and the alloy composition drastically alter the phases found in the samples due to the presence of competing ternary phases. Annealing at 900 and 950 $^{\circ}$C for both alloy compositions facilitate the formation of L2$_{1}$ Heusler phase. Nevertheless, formation of Ni$_{5}$Mn$_{4}$Ge$_{3}$ and Ni$_{16}$Mn$_{6}$Ge$_{7}$ phases cannot be prevented for Ni…
