We investigate thermodynamic properties of lattice Bose gases in optical cavities in the Mott-insulator limit. We find the system assumes anomalous thermodynamic behavior that can be traced back to the breaking of fundamental additivity by its infinite-long range interaction. Specifically, the system shows striking ensemble inequivalence between the canonical ensemble and the grand canonical one, sharply manifesting in the distinct anomalous structure of the thermodynamic phase diagram in the canonical ensemble. In particular, in the temperature regime around half of the on-site energy, the system manifests negative compressibility and anomalous reentrant phase transitions where the ordered charge density wave phase revives from the disordered homogenous phase upon increasing the temperature. Direct experimental observation of the anomalous behavior can be realized in the current experiments with well-controlled total particle number fluctuations.
We investigate the finite temperature charge density wave (CDW) transition of lattice Bose gases within optical cavities in the deep Mott-insulator limit. We find a new critical regime emerges at a temperature around one-half of the on-site interaction energy, where the first order CDW transition at low temperatures terminates at a critical point and changes to a second order one. By directly calculating the critical exponents and constructing the effective theory in the corresponding critical regime, we find the emergent criticality belongs to the five-dimensional Ising universality class. Di…
We review recent work on a kinetic model for very low temperature dilute Bose gases. The brief derivation, expressions for hydrodynamics modes, and the comparison with a experiment on a BEC of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms are presented.
We explore the quantum phases emerging from the interplay between spin and motional degrees of freedom of a one-dimensional quantum fluid of spinful fermionic atoms, effectively interacting via a photon-mediating mechanism with tunable sign and strength g, as it can be realized in present-day experiments with optical cavities. We find the emergence, in the very same system, of spin- and atomic-density wave ordering, accompanied by the occurrence of superfluidity for g > 0, while cavity photons are seen to drive strong correlations at all g values, with fermionic character for g > 0, and bosoni…
Quantum simulations based on near-resonance Bose gases are limited by their short lifetimes due to severe atom losses. In addition to this, the recently predicted thermodynamical instability adds another constraint on accessing the resonant Bose gases. In this article, we offer a potential solution by proposing long-lived resonant Bose gases in both two and three dimensions, where the conventional few-body losses are strongly suppressed. We show that the thermodynamical properties as well as the lifetimes of these strongly interacting systems are universal, and independent of short-range physi…
Ultra-cold atomic gases provide new chance to study the universal critical behavior of phase transition. We study theoretically the matter wave interference for ultra-cold Bose gases in the critical regime. We demonstrate that the interference in the momentum distribution can be used to extract the correlation in the Bose gas. A simple relation between the interference visibility and the correlation length is found and used to interpret the pioneering experiment about the critical behavior of dilute Bose gases [Science {\bf 315}, 1556 (2007)]. Our theory paves the way to experimentally study v…
Using effective field theories dictated by the symmetry of the system, as well as microscopic considerations, we map out the magnetic coupling-temperature phase diagrams of spin-1 Bose gases in both two- and three-dimensions. We also determine the nature of all phase boundaries, and critical properties in the case of 2nd order phase transitions at both zero and finite temperatures.
The strongly interacting Bose gas is one of the most fundamental paradigms of quantum many-body physics and the subject of many experimental and theoretical investigations. We review recent progress on strongly correlated Bose gases, starting with a description of beyond mean-field corrections. We show that the Efimov effect leads to non universal phenomena and to a metastability of the low temperature Bose gas through three-body recombination to deeply bound molecular states. We outline differences and similarities with ultracold Fermi gases, discuss recent experiments on the unitary Bose gas…
The coupled dynamics of the atom and photon fields in optical ring cavities with two counter-propagating modes give rise to both spin-orbit interactions as well as long-ranged interactions between atoms of a many-body system. At zero temperature, the interplay between the two-body and cavity-mediated interactions determines the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this work, we find that cavity quantum electrodynamics in the weak-coupling regime favors a stripe-phase state over a plane-wave phase as the strength of cavity-mediated interactions increases. Indeed, the stripe phase is e…
Recently the ETH group has reported an experiment on superradiant transition of a Bose condensate in two crossed beam cavities. The surprise is that they find that across the superradiant transition, the cavity light can be emitted in any superposition of these two cavity modes. This indicates an additional $U(1)$ symmetry that does not exist in the full Hamiltonian. In this letter we show that this symmetry is an emergent symmetry in the vicinity of the phase transition. We identify all the necessary conditions that are required for this emergent $U(1)$ symmetry and show that the ETH experime…
We develop an analytical approach for the description of an atomic Bose gas at unitarity. By focusing in first instance on the evaluation of the single-particle density matrix, we derive several universal properties of the unitary Bose gas, such as the chemical potential, the contact, the speed of sound, the condensate density and the effective interatomic interaction. The theory is also generalized to describe Bose gases with a finite scattering length and then reduces to the Bogoliubov theory in the weak-coupling limit.
Recent experiments on Bose--Einstein condensates in optical cavities have reported a quantum phase transition to a coherent state of the matter-light system -- superradiance. The time dependent nature of these experiments demands consideration of collective dynamics. Here we establish a rich phase diagram, accessible by quench experiments, with distinct regimes of dynamics separated by non-equilibrium phase transitions. We include the key effects of cavity leakage and the back-reaction of the cavity field on the condensate. Proximity to some of these phase boundaries results in critical slowin…
Ultracold atomic gases can be spined up either by confining them in rotating frame, or by introducing ``synthetic" magnetic field. In this paper, thermodynamics of rotating ideal Bose gases are investigated within truncated-summation approach which keeps to take into account the discrete nature of energy levels, rather than to approximate the summation over single-particle energy levels by an integral as does in semi-classical approximation. Our results show that Bose gases in rotating frame exhibit much stronger dependence on rotation frequency than those in ``synthetic" magnetic field. Conse…
We study the superfluid transitions in bidimensional (2D) and tridimensional (3D) disordered and interacting Bose gases. We work in the limit of long-range correlated disorder such that it can be treated in the local density approximation. We present the superfluid transition curves both in the disorder-temperature plane well as in the disorder-entropy plane in 2D and 3D Bose gases. Surprisingly, we find that a small amount of disorder is always favorable to the apparition of a superfluid. Our results offer a quantitative comparison with recent experiments in 2D disordered ultra-cold gases, fo…
We have studied thermodynamic properties of noninteracting gases in periodic lattice potential at arbitrary integer fillings and compared them with that of ideal homogeneous gases. Deriving explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities and performing exact numerical calculations we have found that the dependence of e.g. entropy and energy on the temperature in the normal phase is rather weak. In the Bose condensed phase their power dependence on the reduced temperature is nearly linear, which is in contrast to that of ideal homogeneous gases. We evaluated the discontinuity in the slope of …
By studying the zero-temperature and nonzero-temperature phase diagrams of the ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model under an external magnetic field, we find that the competition between ferromagnetism and the quadratic Zeeman energy yields two superfluid phases, which feature discontinuous first-order phase transitions between them for a strongly spinor Bose gas such as ${}^7$Li, contrary to the corresponding continuum system.
Bose-Einstein condensation has in the last two decades been observed in cold atomic gases and in solid-state physics quasiparticles, exciton-polaritons and magnons, respectively. The perhaps most widely known example of a bosonic gas, photons in blackbody radiation, however exhibits no Bose-Einstein condensation, because the particle number is not conserved and at low temperatures the photons disappear in the system's walls instead of massively occupying the cavity ground mode. This is not the case in a small optical cavity, with a low-frequency cutoff imprinting a spectrum of photon energies …
We obtain a rigorous solution of universal Bose gases near resonance and offer an answer to one of the long-standing challenges of quantum gases at large scattering lengths, where the standard dilute theory breaks down. The solution was obtained by using an $ε$ expansion near four spatial dimension. In dimension $d = 4 - ε$, the chemical potential of Bose gases near resonances is shown to approach the universal value $ε^{(2/(4-ε))} ε_F \sqrt{2/3} (1 + 0.474 ε- i 1.217 ε+ ...)$, where $ε_F$ is the Fermi energy defined for a Fermi gas of density $n$, and the condensation fraction is equal to $2/…
In this work we investigate the unique properties of ultracold Bose gases in one and two dimensions. In two dimensions, we present simulations of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition using the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation formalism. We confirm the presence of the BKT phase by observing algebraic decay in the first-order correlation function, unbinding of vortex pairs, and behaviour of the superfluid fraction. In one dimension we use a transverse Gaussian ansatz and the Lagrangian approach to derive an effective equation of motion for the one dimensional Bose gas at…
We consider dynamic, i.e., frequency-dependent, correlations in non-condensed ultracold atomic Bose gases. In particular, we consider the single-particle correlation function and its power spectrum. We compute this power spectrum for a one-component Bose gas, and show how it depends on the interatomic interactions that lead to a finite single-particle relaxation time. As another example, we consider the power spectrum of spin-current fluctuations for a two-component Bose gas and show how it is determined by the spin-transport relaxation time.
We investigate the thermodynamics of one-dimensional Bose gases in the strongly correlated regime. To this end, we prepare ensembles of independent 1D Bose gases in a two-dimensional optical lattice and perform high-resolution in situ imaging of the column-integrated density distribution. Using an inverse Abel transformation we derive effective one-dimensional line-density profiles and compare them to exact theoretical models. The high resolution allows for a direct thermometry of the trapped ensembles. The knowledge about the temperature enables us to extract thermodynamic equations of state …
A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a one-dimensional ring potential supports solitary-wave solutions, which we evaluate analytically. The derived solutions are shown to be unique. The corresponding dispersion relation that generalizes the case of a single-component system shows interesting features.
We calculate the equation of state of Bose-Bose gases in one and three dimensions in the framework of an effective quantum field theory. The beyond-mean-field approximation at zero-temperature and the one-loop finite-temperature results are obtained performing functional integration on a local effective action. The ultraviolet divergent zero-point quantum fluctuations are removed by means of dimensional regularization. We derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to describe one- and three-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures and solve it analytically in the one-dimensional scenario. This equation s…
The idea is advanced that strong perturbations of an initially equilibrium Bose-condensed gas lead to the sequence of nonequilibrium states whose order is inverse to the sequence of states arising in the process of the Bose-gas relaxation from an initial nonequilibrium state. An approach is described for constructing statistical models of nonequilibrium Bose gases. The method is based on the averaging over heterogenous configurations of a nonequilibrium system. A statistical model of grain turbulence is suggested. A simple model is analyzed consisting of a mixture of two phases, one gauge symm…
We clarify some technical issues in the present generalized effective-potential Landau theory (GEPLT) that makes the GEPLT more consistent and complete. Utilizing this clarified GEPLT, we analytically study the quantum phase transitions of ultracold Bose gases in bipartite superlattices at zero termparture. The corresponding quantum phase boundaries are analytically calculated up to the third-order hopping, which are in excellent agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations.
We study the signature of scale invariance in the far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two dimensional Bose gases. We show that the density profile displays a scale invariant logarithmic singularity near the center. In addition, the density oscillates due to quantum beats with universal structures. Namely, the frequencies of the beats can be connected with one another by a universal discrete scale transformation induced by the scale invariance. The experimental applicability of these results is then discussed.
The object of study of this thesis are dipolar systems in the quantum degenerate regime. In general, dealing with many-body systems and evaluating their properties requires to deal with the Schrödinger equation. In the present study we employ different Monte Carlo methods, that are stochastic techniques that allow to find numerical solutions to it.
We show how time-dependent magnetic fields lead to spin motive forces and spin drag in a spinor Bose gas. We propose to observe these effects in a toroidal trap and analyze this particular proposal in some detail. In the linear-response regime we define a transport coefficient that is analogous to the usual drag resistivity in electron bilayer systems. Due to Bose enhancement of atom-atom scattering, this coefficient strongly increases as temperature is lowered. We also investigate the effects of heating.
Using a variational method, we derive an exact upper bound for one-magnon excitation energy in ferromagnetic spinor gases, which limits the quantum corrections to the effective mass of a magnon to be positive. We also derive an upper bound for one-magnon excitation energy in lattice systems. The results hold for both Bose and Fermi systems in $d$ dimensions as long as the interaction is local and invariant under spin rotation.
The stability of Bose gases near resonance has been a puzzling problem in recent years. In this Letter, we demonstrate that in addition to generating thermal pressure, thermal atoms enhance the repulsiveness of the scale-dependent interactions between condensed atoms due to renormalization effect and further stabilize the Bose gases. Consequently, we find that, as a precursor of instability, the compressibility develops an anomalous structure as a function of scattering length and is drastically reduced compared with the mean-field value. Furthermore, the density profile of a Bose gas in a har…
We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.
We investigate the coherence properties of an array of one-dimensional Bose gases with short-scale phase fluctuations. The momentum distribution is measured using Bragg spectroscopy and an effective coherence length of the whole ensemble is defined. In addition, we propose and demonstrate that time-of-flight absorption imaging can be used as a simple probe to directly measure the coherence-length of 1D gases in the regime where phase-fluctuations are strong. This method is suitable for future studies such as investigating the effect of disorder on the phase coherence.
We study the collective modes of the minority component of a highly unbalanced Bose-Bose mixtures. In the miscible case the minority component feels an effective external potential and we derive an analytical expression for the mode frequencies. The latter is independent of the minority component interaction strength. In the immiscible case we find that the ground state can be a two-domain walls soliton. Although the mode frequencies are continuous at the transition, their behaviour is very different with respect to the miscible case. The dynamical behaviour of the solitonic structure and the …
We propose an experimental scheme for studying the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) phenomenon in a quantum mechanical regime using ultracold atoms. Specifically, we suggest and analyze a setup of one-dimensional Bose gases confined into an optical lattice. The strength of quantum fluctuations is controlled by tuning the number of atoms per lattice sites (filling factor). By simulating the real-time dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model by means of the exact numerical method of time-evolving block decimation, we investigate the effects of quantum fluctuations on the FPU recurrence and show that strong quan…
The rotational properties of a mixture of two distinguishable Bose gases that are confined in a ring potential provide novel physical effects that we demonstrate in this study. Persistent currents are shown to be stable for a range of the population imbalance between the two components at low angular momentum. At higher values of the angular momentum, even small admixtures of a second species of atoms make the persistent currents highly fragile.
We study the interplay between few- and many-body physics in Bose gases near resonance. The effect of condensates on the two-body running coupling constant is investigated via imposing a boundary condition on a self-consistent renormalization flow equation. Bose gases are found to become nearly fermionized when the chemical potential as a function of scattering lengths reaches a maximum and the atomic condensates lose meta-stability. The maximum and accompanied insta- bility are illustrated as a precursor of the sign change of g_2, the renormalized two-body interaction between condensed atoms …
We study theoretically some effects produced by a propagation of the charged particles in dilute gases of alkali-metal atoms in the state with Bose-Einstein condensates. The energy change of the high-speed (relativistic) particle that corresponds to the Cherenkov effect in the condensate is investigated. We show that in the studied cases the particle can both loose and receive the energy from a gas. We find the necessary conditions for the particle acceleration in the multi-component condensate. It is shown that the Cherenkov effect in Bose-Einstein condensates can be used also for defining th…
For ultra-cold atomic gases close to the critical temperature, there is a divergent correlation behavior within the critical regime. This divergent correlation behavior is the cornerstone of the universal behavior within the critical regime, e.g. the universal critical exponent for the same class with very different physical systems. It is still quite challenging to observe this divergent correlation behavior in experiments with ultra-cold atomic gases. Here we consider theoretically the interference effect of the critical atomic Bose gas by a Kapitza-Dirac scattering. We find that the Kapitza…
We present a stochastic matter field equation for an interacting many-body Bose system in equilibrium at ultracold finite temperature. Moreover, the proposed equation can be used for non-equilibrium dynamics on phenomenological grounds. This stochastic differential equation is based on a field phase space representation reflecting the underlying canonical density operator (fixed particle number N). Remarkably, it allows for an efficient numerical implementation. We apply our canonical c-field method to interference experiments with quasi-one dimensional Bose gases. Crucial features of these in…
An iterative scheme based on the kernel polynomial method is devised for the efficient computation of the one-body density matrix of weakly interacting Bose gases within Bogoliubov theory. This scheme is used to analyze the coherence properties of disordered bosons in one and two dimensions. In the one-dimensional geometry, we examine the quantum phase transition between superfluid and Bose glass at weak interactions, and we recover the scaling of the phase boundary that was characterized using a direct spectral approach by Fontanesi et al. [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053603 (2010)]. The kernel polynomi…
We show how density dependent gauge potentials can be induced in dilute gases of ultracold atoms using light-matter interactions. We study the effect of the resulting interacting gauge theory and show how it gives rise to novel topological states in the ultracold gas. We find in particular that the onset of persistent currents in a ring geometry is governed by a critical number of particles. The density-dependent gauge potential is also found to support chiral solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional ultracold Bose gas.
We consider a mixture of two-component Fermi and (one-component) dipolar Bose gases in which both dipolar interaction and s-wave scattering between fermions of opposite spins are tunable. We show that in the long wavelength limit, the anisotropy in the Fermi-Fermi interaction induced by phonons of the dipolar condensate can strongly enhance the scattering in the triplet channel. We investigate in detail the conditions for achieving optimal critical temperature at which the triplet superfluid begins to compete with the singlet superfluid.
The dissipative dynamics of a Josephson junction in the Bose-gases is considered within the framework of the model of a tunneling Hamiltonian. The effective action which describes the dynamics of the phase difference across the junction is derived using functional integration method. The dynamic equation obtained for the phase difference across the junction is analyzed for the finite temperatures in the low frequency limit involving the radiation terms. The asymmetric case of the Bose-gases with the different order parameters is calculated as well.
We review some recent results on interacting Bose gases in thermal equilibrium. In particular, we study the convergence of the grand-canonical equilibrium states of such gases to their mean-field limits, which are given by the Gibbs measures of classical field theories with quartic Hartree-type self-interaction, and to the Gibbs states of classical gases of point particles. We discuss various open problems and conjectures concerning, e.g., Bose-Einstein condensation, polymers and $\vert \boldsymbolϕ \vert^{4}$-theory.
In this paper, we explore the nature of three-dimensional Bose gases at large positive scattering lengths via resummation of dominating processes involving a minimum number of virtual atoms. We focus on the energetics of the nearly fermionized Bose gases beyond the usual dilute limit. We also find that an onset instability sets in at a critical scattering length, beyond which the near-resonance Bose gases become strongly coupled to molecules and lose the metastability. Near the point of instability, the chemical potential reaches a maximum, and the effect of the three-body forces can be estima…
We investigate the finite temperature spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) transition of two-component lattice spinor Bose gases in optical lattices in the Mott-insulator limit. At the temperature scale around half of the on-site interaction energy, we find a new critical regime emerges and features, in particular, a new bicritical line and two critical lines associated with the finite temperature SDW-CDW, homogeneous-SDW, and homogeneous-CDW transition, respectively. Direct calculation of the critical exponents for the scaling behavior and investigating on the effective theor…
Novel ground state properties of rotating Bose gases have been intensively studied in the context of neutral cold atoms. We investigate the rotating Bose gas in a trap from a thermodynamic perspective, taking the charged ideal Bose gas in magnetic field (which is equivalent to a neutral gas in a synthetic magnetic field) as an example. It is indicated that the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature is irrelevant to the magnetic field, conflicting with established intuition that the critical temperature decreases with the field increasing. The specific heat and Landau diamagnetization also exhi…
In these notes of six lectures on selected topics in the theory of cold, dilute Bose gases, presented at the 5th Warsaw School of Statistical Physics in June 2013, the following topics are discussed: 1) The concept of BEC, 2) the ground state energy of a dilute Bose gas with short range interactions, 3) Gross-Pitaevskii theory and BEC in trapped gases, 4) Bose gases in rotating traps and quantized vortices, and 5) strongly correlated phases in the lowest Landau level generated by rapid rotation.
We present a novel approach to modeling dynamics of trapped, degenerate, weakly interacting Bose gases beyond the mean field limit. We transform a many-body problem to the interaction representation with respect to a suitably chosen part of the Hamiltonian and only then apply a multimode coherent-state ansatz. The obtained equations are almost as simple as the Gross--Pitaevskii equation, but our approach captures essential features of the quantum dynamics such as the collapse of coherence.
We trap individual 1D Bose gases and obtain the associated equation of state by combining calibrated confining potentials with in-situ density profiles. Our observations agree well with the exact Yang-Yang 1D thermodynamic solutions under the local density approximation. We find that our final 1D system undergoes inefficient evaporative cooling that decreases the absolute temperature, but monotonically reduces a degeneracy parameter.
We measure the position- and momentum- space breathing dynamics of trapped one-dimensional Bose gases. The profile in real space reveals sinusoidal width oscillations whose frequency varies continuously through the quasicondensate to ideal Bose gas crossover. A comparison with theoretical models taking into account the effect of finite temperature is provided. In momentum space, we report the first observation of a frequency doubling in the quasicondensate regime, corresponding to a self-reflection mechanism. The disappearance of this mechanism through the quasicondensation crossover is mapped…
One-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions are known to exhibit the weak-strong duality, where the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of one system at weak coupling are identical to those of the other system at strong coupling. Here, we show that such duality extends beyond the thermodynamics to the frequency-dependent complex bulk viscosity, which is provided by the contact-contact response function. In particular, we confirm that the bulk viscosities of the Bose and Fermi gases agree in the high-temperature limit, where the systematic expansion in terms of fugacity is a…
Investigating out-of-equilibrium dynamics with two-dimensional (2D) systems is of widespread theoretical interest, as these systems are strongly influenced by fluctuations and there exists a superfluid phase transition at a finite temperature. In this work, we realise matter-wave interference for degenerate Bose gases, including the first demonstration of coherent splitting of 2D Bose gases using magnetic trapping potentials. We improve the fringe contrast by imaging only a thin slice of the expanded atom clouds, which will be necessary for subsequent studies on the relaxation of the gas follo…
We investigate the ground state properties of anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose gases in one dimensional harmonic potential from the weak repulsion regime to the strong repulsion regime. By diagonalizing the Hamiltonian in the Hilbert space composed of the lowest eigenstates of single particle and spin components, the ground state wavefunction and therefore the density distributions, magnetization distribution, one body density matrix, and momentum distribution for each components are obtained. It is shown that the spinor Bose gases of different magnetization exhibit the same total density profil…
We study superfluidity of supersolid phases of dipolar Bose gases in two-dimensional optical lattices. We perform linear stability analyses for the corresponding dipolar Bose-Hubbard model in the hardcore boson limit to show that a supersolid can have stable superflow until the flow velocity reaches a certain critical value. The critical velocity for the supersolid is found to be significantly smaller than that for a conventional superfluid phase. We propose that the critical velocity can be used as a signature to identify the superfluidity of the supersolid phase in experiment.
We examine the problem of stability of persistent currents in a mixture of two Bose gases trapped in an annular potential. We evaluate the critical coupling for metastability in the transition from quasi-one to two-dimensional motion. We also evaluate the critical coupling for metastability in a mixture of two species as function of the population imbalance. The stability of the currents is shown to be sensitive to the deviation from one-dimensional motion.
