Time-dependent Hartree--Fock (TDHF) method has been applied to various low-energy nuclear reactions, such as fusion, fission, and multinucleon transfer reactions. In this Mini Review, we summarize recent attempts to bridge a microscopic nuclear reaction theory, TDHF, and a macroscopic aspect of nuclear reactions through nucleus--nucleus potentials and energy dissipation from macroscopic degrees of freedom to microscopic ones obtained from TDHF in various colliding systems from light to heavy mass regions.
Time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory has been a powerful tool in describing a variety of complex nuclear dynamics microscopically without empirical parameters. In this contribution, recent advances in nuclear dynamics studies with TDHF and its extensions are briefly reviewed, along the line with the study of multinucleon transfer (MNT) reactions. The latter lies at the core of this Research Topic, whose application for production of extremely neutron-rich nuclei has been extensively discussed in recent years. Having in mind the ongoing theoretical developments, it is envisaged how microsc…

The theoretical studies are required to provide reliable predictions for the experiments and promote the understanding of the microscopic mechanism in multinucleon transfer reactions. \item[Purpose] We provide a predictive approach for production cross sections, and testify how and to what extent the microscopic approach works well in multinucleon transfer reaction. \item[Methods] We employ…
We simulate a heavy-ion collision using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory (Cb-TDHFB) treating pairing correlation in the three-dimensional coordinate space. We apply the Cb-TDHFB to 22O+22O collision with a contact-type pairing energy functional, and compare results of Cb-TDHFB and TDHF to investigate the effects of pairing correlations in nuclear fusion. Our results seem to indicate that pairing effects do not increase the fusion cross section in this system.
These lecture notes are addressed to PhD student and/or researchers who want a general overview of microscopic approaches based on mean-field and applied to nuclear dynamics. Our goal is to provide a good description of low energy heavy-ion collisions. We present both formal aspects and practical applications of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. The TDHF approach gives a mean field dynamics of the system under the assumption that particles evolve independently in their self-consistent average field. As an example, we study the fusion of both spherical and deformed nuclei with TDHF…
A particle-number projection technique is used to calculate transfer probabilities in the $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb reaction below the fusion barrier. The time evolution of the many-body wave function is obtained with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) mean-field theory. The agreement with experimental data for the sum of the proton-transfer channels is good, considering that TDHF has no parameter adjusted on reaction mechanism. Some perspectives for extensions beyond TDHF to include cluster-transfers are discussed.
In this manuscript we provide an outline of the numerical methods used in implementing the density constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method and provide a few examples of its application to nuclear fusion. In this approach, dynamic microscopic calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice and there are no adjustable parameters, the only input is the Skyrme effective NN interaction. After a review of the DC-TDHF theory and the numerical methods, we present results for heavy-ion potentials $V(R)$, coordinate-dependent mass parameters $M(R)$, and precompound excitatio…
Background: Multinucleon transfer (MNT) and quasifission (QF) processes are dominant processes in low-energy collisions of two heavy nuclei. They are expected to be useful to produce neutron-rich unstable nuclei. Nuclear dynamics leading to these processes depends sensitively on nuclear properties such as deformation and shell structure. Purpose: We elucidate reaction mechanisms of MNT and QF processes involving heavy deformed nuclei, making detailed comparisons between microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations and measurements for the $^{64}$Ni+$^{238}$U reaction. Methods: T…
Background: Synthesis of superheavy elements (SHE) with fusion-evaporation reactions is strongly hindered by the quasifission (QF) mechanism which prevents the formation of an equilibrated compound nucleus and which depends on the structure of the reactants. New SHE have been recently produced with doubly-magic $^{48}$Ca beams. However, SHE synthesis experiments with single-magic $^{50}$Ti beams have so far been unsuccessful. Purpose: In connection with experimental searches for $Z=117,119$ superheavy elements, we perform a theoretical study of fusion and quasifission mechanisms in $^{48}$Ca,$…
Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier offer a vital opportunity to study rich physics of nuclear structure and dynamics. Despite the continuous development in the field, we have still limited knowledge about how deformation - one of the representative nuclear structures - affects multinucleon transfer reactions. Purpose: To shed light on the effect of deformation in multinucleon transfer processes, we study the $^{16}$O+$^{154}$Sm reaction at $E_{\rm lab}$=85 MeV (around the Coulomb barrier) and 134 MeV (substantially above the Coulomb barrier), whe…
Numerical simulation on nuclear collisions are performed using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory (Cb-TDHFB) in the three-dimensional coordinate space. Comparing results of the Cb-TDHFB and the conventional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations, we study effects of the pairing correlation on fusion reaction of $^{22}$O+$^{22}$O, $^{52}$Ca+$^{52}$Ca, and $^{22}$O+$^{52}$Ca, using the Skyrme SkM$^*$ functional and a contact-type pairing energy functional. Although current results are yet preliminary, they may suggest that the pairing correlation could hin…
Multinucleon transfer processes in heavy-ion reactions at energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier are investigated in a fully microscopic framework of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. Transfer probabilities are calculated from the TDHF wave function after collision using the projection operator method which has recently been proposed by Simenel (C. Simenel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 192701 (2010)). We show results of the TDHF calculations for transfer cross sections of the reactions of $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{124}$Sn at $E_{lab}=$ 170, 174 MeV, $^{40}$Ca+$^{208}$Pb at $E_{lab}=$ 235, 249…
Background: Heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier are influenced by couplings between the relative motion and nuclear intrinsic degrees of freedom of the colliding nuclei. The time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory, incorporating the couplings at the mean-field level, as well as the coupled-channels (CC) method are standard approaches to describe low energy nuclear reactions. Purpose: To investigate the effect of couplings to inelastic and transfer channels on the fusion cross sections for the reactions $^{40}$Ca+$^{58}$Ni and $^{40}$Ca+$^{64}$Ni. Methods: Fusion c…
We study fusion reactions of the $^{64}$Ni+$^{132}$Sn system using the recently introduced density constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock formalism. In this formalism the fusion barriers are directly obtained from TDHF dynamics. In addition, we incorporate the entrance channel alignment of the deformed (oblate) $^{64}$Ni nucleus due to dynamical Coulomb excitation. We discuss the influence of particle transfer and other dynamical effects on the fusion cross sections. Calculated cross sections are in very good agreement with data and other calculations.
We develop a novel approach to fusion reactions for syntheses of superheavy elements, which combines the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method with a dynamical diffusion model based on the Langevin equation. In this approach, the distance of the closest approach for the capture process is estimated within the TDHF approach, which is then plugged into the dynamical diffusion model as an initial condition. We apply this approach to hot fusion reactions leading to formation of the element $Z=120$, that is, the $^{48}$Ca+$^{254,257}$Fm, $^{51}$V+$^{249}$Bk, and $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reactions. …
Time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory has achieved a remarkable success in describing and understanding nuclear many-body dynamics from nucleons' degrees of freedom. We here report our investigation of multinucleon transfer (MNT) processes employing the TDHF theory. To calculate transfer probabilities for channels specified by the number of protons and neutrons included in reaction products, a particle-number projection (PNP) method has been developed. The PNP method is also used to calculate excitation energies of reaction products. Combined use of the PNP method with a statistical model,…
Background: Studies of low-energy fusion of light nuclei are important in astrophysical modeling, with small variations in reaction rates having a large impact on nucleosynthesis yields. Due to the lack of experimental data at astrophysical energies, extrapolation and microscopic methods are needed to model fusion probabilities. Purpose: To investigate deep sub-barrier $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion cross sections and establish trends for the $S$ factor. Method: Microscopic methods based on static Hartree-Fock (HF) and time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) mean-field theory are used to obtain $^{12}$C+…
Background: The study of deep-inelastic reactions of nuclei provide a vehicle to investigate nuclear transport phenomena for a full range of equilibration dynamics. These inquires provide us the ingredients to model such phenomena and help answer important questions about the nuclear Equation of State (EOS) and its evolution as a function of neutron-to-proton $(N/Z)$ ratio. Purpose: The motivation is to examine the real-time dynamics of nuclear transport phenomena and its dependence on $(N/Z)$ asymmetry from a microscopic point of view to avoid any pre-conceived assumptions about the involved …
We study fusion reactions of the $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni system using the density-constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) formalism. In this formalism the fusion barriers are directly obtained from TDHF dynamics. In addition, we incorporate the entrance channel alignments of the slightly deformed (oblate) $^{64}$Ni nuclei due to dynamical Coulomb excitation. We show that alignment leads to a fusion barrier distribution and alters the naive picture for defining which energies are actually sub-barrier. We also show that core polarization effects could play a significant role in fusion cross s…
In the present contribution, the effect of pairing on nuclear transfer and fusion reactions close to the Coulomb barrier is discussed. A Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock + BCS (TDHF+BCS) microscopic theory has been developed to incorporate pairing. One- and two-particle transfer probabilities can be obtained showing the importance of pairing. The calculated transfer probabilities are compared to the recent experimental results obtained for the $^{96}$Zr+$^{40}$Ca. Reactions involving the $^{18}$O with lead isotopes are also presented, that are also of current experimental interest. Finally, a study…
Background: At energies near the Coulomb barrier, capture reactions in heavy-ion collisions result either in fusion or in quasifission. The former produces a compound nucleus in statistical equilibrium, while the second leads to a reseparation of the fragments after partial mass equilibration without formation of a compound nucleus. Extracting the compound nucleus formation probability is crucial to predict superheavy-element formation cross-sections. It requires a good knowledge of the fragment angular distribution which itself depends on quantities such as moments of inertia and excitation e…
We study heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier, in particular with neutron-rich radioactive ion beams. Dynamic microscopic calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice using the Density-Constrained Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method. New results are presented for the $^{132}$Sn+$^{40}$Ca system which are compared to $^{132}$Sn+$^{48}$Ca studied earlier. Our theoretical fusion cross-sections agree surprisingly well with recent data measured at HRIBF. We also study the near- and sub-barrier fusion of $^{24,16}$O on $^{12}$C which is important to…
Background: Heavy-ion fusion reactions involving heavy nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier exhibit fusion hindrance, where the probability of compound nucleus formation is strongly hindered compared with that in light- and medium-mass systems. The origin of this fusion hindrance has not been well understood from a microscopic point of view. Purpose: Analyze the fusion dynamics in heavy systems by a microscopic reaction model and understand the origin of the fusion hindrance. Method: We employ the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. We extract nucleus--nucleus potential and ene…
The production of new proton-rich nuclei in the vicinity of 100Sn is investigated via multinucleon transfer reactions within the framework of microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) and statistical model GEMINI++. The TDHF+GEMINI method has demonstrated the reliable description in the multinucleon transfer dynamics and the agreement between theoretical results and experimental data is quite satisfactory in the observed transfer reactions. We reveal the production cross sections of proton-rich nuclei in 100Sn region via multinucleon transfer reactions to be several orders of magnitude hi…
The Skyrme effective interaction, with its multitude of parameterisations, along with its implemen- tation using the static and time-dependent density functional (TDHF) formalism have allowed for a range of microscopic calculations of low-energy heavy-ion collisions. These calculations allow variation of the effective interaction along with an interpretation of the results of this variation informed by a comparison to experimental data. Initial progress in implementing TDHF for heavy-ion collisions necessarily used many approximations in the geometry or the interaction. Over the last decade or…

We discuss possible avenues to study fission dynamics starting from a time-dependent mean-field approach. Previous attempts to study fission dynamics using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory are analyzed. We argue that different initial conditions may be needed to describe fission dynamics depending on the specifics of the fission phenomenon and propose various approaches towards this goal. In particular, we provide preliminary calculations for studying fission following a heavy-ion reaction using TDHF with a density contraint. Regarding prompt muon-induced fission, we also suggest …
Background: Production of neutron-rich nuclei is of vital importance to both understanding nuclear structure far from stability and to informing astrophysical models of the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Multinucleon transfer (MNT) in heavy-ion collisions offers a possibility to produce neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. Purpose: The $^{176}\mathrm{Yb}+{}^{176}\mathrm{Yb}$ reaction has been suggested as a potential candidate to explore the neutron-rich region surrounding the principal fragments. The current study has been conducted with the goal of providing guidance for futur…
We provide a microscopic description of the fusion reactions between $^{40,48}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. The internuclear potentials are obtained using the density-constrained (DC) time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) approach and fusion cross sections are calculated via the incoming wave boundary condition method. By performing DC-TDHF calculations at several selected incident energies, the internuclear potentials for both systems are obtained and the energy-dependence of fusion barrier are revealed. The influence of tensor force on internuclear potentials of $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+{}^{78}\mathrm{Ni}$ is mo…
The Balian-Vénéroni (BV) variational principle, which optimizes the evolution of the state according to the relevant observable in a given variational space, is used at the mean-field level to determine the particle number fluctuations in fragments of many-body systems. For fermions, the numerical evaluation of such fluctuations requires the use of a time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) code. Proton, neutron and total nucleon number fluctuations in fragments produced in collisions of two 40Ca are computed for a large range of angular momenta at a center of mass energy E_cm=128 MeV, well above th…
Within the Time Dependent Hartree Fock (TDHF) approach, we investigate the impact of several ingredients of the nuclear effective interaction, such as incompressibility, symmetry energy, effective mass, derivative of the Lane potential and surface terms on the exit channel (fusion vs quasifission) observed in the reaction $^{238}$U+$^{40}$Ca, close to the Coulomb barrier. Our results show that all the ingredients listed above contribute to the competition between fusion and quasifission processes, however the leading role in determining the outcome of the reaction is played by incompressibilit…
We present a microscopic dynamical study of the reactions involving three $^{4}$He clusters. We show that the much discussed triple-$α$ linear chain configuration of $^{12}$C is formed with a certain lifetime and subsequently decays into a triangular configuration of $^{12}$C and then to a configuration near the ground state. Time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory coupled with a density constraint is used to study the properties of these configurations. We find a sequence of dynamical transitions analogous to the suggested astrophysical mechanism for the formation of $^{12}$C nuclei.
The richness of phenomena occurring in heavy-ion collisions calls for microscopic approaches where the motion of each nucleon is treated quantum mechanically. The most popular microscopic approach for low-energy collisions between atomic nuclei is the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory, providing a quantum mean-field dynamics of the system. The TDHF approach and some of its extensions are used to predict the evolution of out-of-equilibrium nuclear systems. The formation of di-nuclear systems with a structure close to molecular states is investigated. In particular, lifetimes and exit ch…
In the search for superheavy elements quasifission reactions represent one of the reaction pathways that curtail the formation of an evaporation residue. In addition to its importance in these searches quasifission is also an interesting dynamic process that could assist our understanding of many-body dynamical shell effects and energy dissipation thus forming a gateway between deep-inelastic reactions and fission. This manuscript gives a summary of recent progress in microscopic calculations of quasifission employing time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory and its extensions.
Background: Near-barrier fusion can be strongly affected by the coupling between relative motion and internal degrees of freedom of the collision partners. The time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory and the coupled-channels (CC) method are standard approaches to investigate this aspect of fusion dynamics. However, both approaches present limitations, such as a lack of tunnelling of the many-body wave function in the former and a need for external parameters to describe the nucleus-nucleus potential and the couplings in the latter. Method: A method combining both approaches is proposed to ov…
In this work, we introduce a new method to reduce the microscopic mean-field theory to a classical macroscopic dynamics during the initial stage of fusion reactions. We show that TDHF (Time-dependent Hartree-Fock) could be a useful tool to gain information on fusion barriers as well as on one-body dissipation effects. We apply the mean-field theory to the case of head-on reaction between $^{16}$O and $^{16,22,24,28}$O in order to quantify the effect of neutron skin on fusion. We show that the determination of fusion barrier requires, in addition to a precise knowledge of the relative distance …
The effect of pairing on small and large amplitude dynamics is discussed. Pairing correlation is treated in a fully microscopic transport theory using a simplified BCS version of the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock Bogolyubov (TDHFB) theory. The approach is applied to study the Giant Dipole and Giant Quadrupole Resonance in spherical and/or deformed magnesium isotopes showing very good agreement with QRPA theory. The present framework also provides a consistent approach to describe nuclear reactions around the Coulomb barrier. As an illustration, the influence of pairing correlations on multi-nucl…
We study pre-equilibrium giant dipole resonance excitation and fusion in the neutron-rich system $^{132}$Sn+$^{48}$Ca at energies near the Coulomb barrier, and we compare photon yields and total fusion cross sections to those of the stable system $^{124}$Sn+$^{40}$Ca. The dynamic microscopic calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice using both the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock method and the Density Constrained TDHF method. We demonstrate that the peak of the GDR excitation spectrum occurs at a substantially lower energy than expected for an equilibrated system, thus reflecting…
A complete set of existing data on hot fusion reactions leading to synthesis of superheavy nuclei of Z =114-118, obtained in a series of experiments in Dubna and later in GSI Darmstadt and LBNL Berkeley, was analyzed in terms of a new angular-momentum dependent version of the Fusion by Diffusion (FBD) model with fission barriers and ground-state masses taken from the Warsaw macroscopic-microscopic model (involving non-axial shapes) of Kowal et al. The only empirically adjustable parameter of the model, the injection-point distance (sinj), has been determined individually for all the reactions …
Global macroscopic features observed in the fully-damped binary processes in light di-nuclear systems, such as limiting angular momenta, mean total kinetic energies and energy thresholds for fusion-fission processes (''fission thresholds") are presented. Their deduced systematics are consistent with that obtained for heavier systems and follow a fusion-fission picture which can be described by a realistic rotating liquid drop model considering diffuse-surface and finite-nuclear-range effects.
We introduce a microscopic approach for calculating the excitation energies of systems formed during heavy-ion collisions. The method is based on time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory and allows the study of the excitation energy as a function of time or ion-ion separation distance. We discuss how this excitation energy is related to the estimate of the excitation energy using the reaction $Q$-value, as well as its implications for dinuclear pre-compound systems formed during heavy-ion collisions.
Background: Microscopic mean-field approaches have been successful in describing the most probable reaction outcomes in low-energy heavy-ion reactions. However, those approaches are known to severely underestimate dispersions of observables around the average values that has limited their applicability. Recently it has been shown that a quantal transport approach based on the stochastic mean-field (SMF) theory significantly improves the description, while its application has been limited so far to fragment mass and charge dispersions. Purpose: In this work, we extend the quantal transport appr…
Background: [elided for arXiv character count] Purpose: With the advancement of computational power it is now possible to undertake TDHF calculations without any symmetry assumptions and incorporate the major strides made by the nuclear structure community in improving the energy density functionals used in these calculations. In particular, time-odd and tensor terms in these functionals are naturally present during the dynamical evolution, while being absent or minimally important for most static calculations. The parameters of these terms are determined by the requirement of Galilean invaria…
We investigate the fusion barriers for reactions involving Ca isotopes $\mathrm{^{40}Ca}+\mathrm{^{40}Ca}$, $\mathrm{^{40}Ca}+\mathrm{^{48}Ca}$, and $\mathrm{^{48}Ca}+\mathrm{^{48}Ca}$ using the microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory coupled with a density constraint. In this formalism the fusion barriers are directly obtained from TDHF dynamics. We also study the excitation of the pre-equilibrium GDR for the $\mathrm{^{40}Ca}+\mathrm{^{48}Ca}$ system and the associated $γ$-ray emission spectrum. Fusion cross-sections are calculated using the incoming-wave boundary condition approach. …
The properties of the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance (ISGDR) and its electromagnetic structure are investigated within a semiclassical nuclear Fermi-Fluid dynamical approach. Microscopical calculations pointing to a ISGDR distribution splitted into two main broad structures is confirmed within the presented macroscopic approach by the occurence of a ''low-lying'' and a ''high-lying'' state, that are nothing else than the first two overtones of the same resonance. Macroscopically they are pictured as a combination of compressional and vortical nuclear flows. In the second part of the paper th…
The nucleus-nucleus potential and energy dissipation in fusion reactions are obtained from microscopic mean-field dynamics. The deduced potentials nicely reproduce the one extracted from experimental data. Energy dissipation shows a universal behaviour between different reactions. Also, the dispersion of mass distribution in transfer reaction is investigated in a stochastic mean-field dynamics. By including initial fluctuations in collective space, the description of the dispersion is much improved compared to that of mean field only. The result is consistent with the macroscopic phenomenologi…
Realistic fusion barriers are calculated in a macroscopic-microscopic model for several soft-fusion heavy-ion reactions leading to heavy and superheavy elements. The results obtained in such a realistic picture are very different from those obtained in a purely macroscopic model. For reactions on 208:Pb targets, shell effects in the entrance channel result in fusion-barrier energies at the touching point that are only a few MeV higher than the ground state for compound systems near Z = 110. The entrance-channel fragment-shell effects remain far inside the touching point, almost to configuratio…
Thermonuclear fusion reaction rates in the solar plasma are enhanced by the presence of the electron cloud that screens fusing nuclei. The present work studies the influence of electron screening deformations on solar reaction rates in the framework of the Debye-Huckel model. These electron-ion cloud deformations, assumed here to be static and axially symmetric, are shown to be able to considerably influence the solar neutrino fluxes of the pp and the CNO chains, with reasonable changes in the macroscopic parameters of the standard solar model (SSM) . Various known deformation sources are disc…
