We study the effects of pseudo-magnetic fields on Weyl semimetals with over-tilted Weyl cones, or type II cones. We compare the phenomenology of the resulting pseudo-Landau levels in the type II Weyl semimetal to the known case of type I cones. We predict that due to the nature of the chiral Landau level resulting from a magnetic field, a pseudo-magnetic field, or their combination, the optical conductivity can be utilized to detect a type II phase and deduce the direction of the tilt. Finally, we discuss ways to engineer homogeneous and inhomogeneous type II semimetals via generalizations of known layered constructions in order to create controlled pseudo-magnetic fields and over-tilted cones.
We investigate the optical activity of tilted nodal loop semimetals. We calculate the full conductivity matrix for a band structure containing a nodal loop with possible tilt in the $x-y$ plane, which allows us to study the Kerr rotation and ellipticity both for a thin film and a bulk material. We find signatures in the Kerr signal that give direct information about the tilt velocity and direction, the radius of the nodal loop and the internal chemical potential of the system. These findings should serve as guide to understanding optical measurements of nodal loop semimetals and as an addition…
The Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of topological semimetal, of which topological surface states -- the Fermi arcs exist. In this paper, the Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals are classified into two classes -- class-1 and class-2. Based on a tight-binding model, the evolution and transport properties of class-1/2 Fermi arcs are studied via the tilting strength of the bulk Weyl cones. The (residual) anomalous Hall conductivity of topological surface states is a physical consequence of class-1 Fermi arc and thus class-1 Fermi arc becomes a nontrivial topological property for hybrid or type-II…
We construct a tight-binding model realizing one pair of Weyl nodes and three distinct Weyl semimetals. In the type-I (type-II) Weyl semimetal, both nodes belong to type-I (type-II) Weyl nodes. In addition, there exists a novel type, dubbed "hybrid Weyl semimetal", in which one Weyl node is of type-I while the other is of type-II. For the hybrid Weyl semimetal, we further demonstrate the bulk Fermi surfaces and the topologically protected surface states, analyze the unique Landau level structure and quantum oscillation, and discuss the material realization.
We report the discovery of a time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal obtained by modifying a model Hamiltonian describing the electronic properties of conventional alkali metals. The artificially generated Weyl semimetal features four isolated Weyl nodes in its bulk band structure and displays characteristic surface Fermi arcs arising from topologically protected surface states. The Weyl semimetal occurs as an intermediate state between a conventional band insulator and a three-dimensional topological insulator. The generation of topological Weyl semimetals from conventional metals opens a new …
Weyl semimetal is a recently discovered state of quantum matter, which generally possesses tilted energy dispersion. Here, we investigate the electron tunneling through a Weyl semimetal p-n-p junction. The angular dependence of electron tunneling exhibits an anomalous profile such that perfect transmission angles are shifted along the direction of the tilt. Coupling of the tilted dispersion and electrical potential within the barrier region gives rise to a transverse momentum shift, which is analogous to the transverse Lorentz displacement induced by magnetic barriers.
A new type of Weyl semimetal state, in which the energy values of Weyl nodes are not the local extrema, has been theoretically proposed recently, namely type II Weyl semimetal. Distinguished from type I semimetal (e.g. TaAs), the Fermi surfaces in a type II Weyl semimetal consist of a pair of electron and hole pockets touching at the Weyl node. In addition, Weyl fermions in type II Weyl semimetals violate Lorentz invariance. Due to these qualitative differences distinct spectroscopy and magnetotransport properties are expected in type II Weyl semimetals. Here, we present the direct observation…
Weyl semimetals are a class of materials that can be regarded as three-dimensional analogs of graphene breaking time reversal or inversion symmetry. Electrons in a Weyl semimetal behave as Weyl fermions, which have many exotic properties, such as chiral anomaly and magnetic monopoles in the crystal momentum space. The surface state of a Weyl semimetal displays pairs of entangled Fermi arcs at two opposite surfaces. However, the existence of Weyl semimetals has not yet been proved experimentally. Here we report the experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs by observing Fermi arcs for…
Non-Hermiticity in Weyl Hamiltonian leads to the realization of Weyl exceptional rings and flat bands inside the Weyl exceptional rings. Recently, the platform of non-Hermitian physics is extended to many-body or disordered systems where quasiparticles possess finite lifetime. Here, we clarify that the deviation from unitarity limit in a disordered Weyl semimetal leads to the generation of Weyl exceptional rings regardless of the detail of the scattering potential. In the case of topological Dirac semimetals, hybrid rings and flat bands without vorticity of complex-energy eigenvalues are reali…
Ideal Weyl semimetals with all Weyl nodes exactly at the Fermi level and no coexisting trivial Fermi surfaces in the bulk, similar to graphene, could feature deep physics such as exotic transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly. Here, we show that HgTe and half-Heusler compounds, under a broad range of in-plane compressive strain, could be materials in nature realizing ideal Weyl semimetals with four pairs of Weyl nodes and topological surface Fermi arcs. Generically, we find that the HgTe-class materials with nontrivial band inversion and noncentrosymmetry provide a promising arena to…
The recent discovery of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 opens up new avenues for research into the interactions between topological orders, magnetism, and electronic correlations. Motivated by the observations of large anomalous Hall effect because of large Berry curvature, we investigate another Berry curvature-induced phenomenon, the anomalous thermal Hall effect in Co3Sn2S2. We study it with and without strain, using a Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonian derived from first principles density functional theory calculations. We first identify this material as a tilted type-I Weyl semimetal bas…
Isolated Weyl cones in a disordered environment do not show the phenomenon of Anderson localization due to the abscence of backscattering processes. However, besides the conventional three dimensional diffusive metal, an additional semimetallic phase can form. In this paper we study the effect of tilt on the physics of disorder in isolated Weyl cones. Our main finding is that while the semimetallic phase remains a stable phase, tilt decreases the size of the semimetallic region. Conversely, disorder increases the effective tilt of the quasiparticle excitations.
In quantum mechanics, a particle is best described by the wave packet instead of the plane wave. Here, we study the wave-packet scattering problem in Weyl semimetals with the low-energy Weyl fermions of different chiralities. Our results show that the wave packet acquires a chirality-protected shift in the single impurity scattering process. More importantly, the chirality-protected shift can lead to an anomalous scattering probability, thus, affects the transport properties in Weyl semimetals. We find that the ratio between the transport lifetime and the quantum lifetime increases sharply whe…
Weyl and Dirac semimetals recently stimulate intense research activities due to their novel properties. Combining first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we predict that nonmagnetic compounds BaYBi (Y=Au, Ag and Cu) are Dirac semimetals. As for the magnetic compound EuYBi, although the time reversal symmetry is broken, their long-range magnetic ordering cannot split the Dirac point into pairs of Weyl points. However, we propose that partially substitute Eu ions by Ba ions will realize the Weyl semimetal.
Unconventional Weyl semimetals have attracted intensive research interest in condensed matter physics and materials science, but they are very rare in two dimensions. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that the Si/Bi van der Waals heterostructure is a two-dimensional unconventional quadratic double Weyl semimetal with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Although unprotected by the C3v double group symmetry of the heterostructure, the two-dimensional quadratic double Weyl semimetal is stable for compressive strains up to…
Weyl semimetals are a new member of the topological materials family, featuring a pair of singly degenerate Weyl cones with linear dispersion around the nodes in the bulk, and Fermi arcs on the surface. Depending on whether the system conserves or violates Lorentz symmetry, Weyl semimetals can be categorized into two classes. Photoemission spectroscopy measurements have confirmed the TaAs-class and WTe2-class of Weyl semimetals as type-I and type-II respectively. This review article aims to elucidate and elaborate on the basic concepts of Weyl semimetals and quasiparticle interference experime…
We propose the linear and nonlinear planar Hall effect (PHE) in tilted Weyl semimetals in the presence of an in-plane magnetic and electric field, where the field-induced Berry connection (FBC) plays a key role. We show that the PHE is ascribed to the quantum metric, distinct from the well-known chiral anomaly-induced PHE arising from the Berry curvature. Using a tilting vector to describe the model, we demonstrate the constrains on the linear and nonlinear PHE by the tilting directions. The linear PHE is intrinsic that is determined by the topological properties of energy bands, whereas the n…
Using first principles pseudopotential density functional theory calculations, we find that terminating zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) with monovalent alkali atoms at a reduced concentration has a dramatic impact on their properties. In particular, using sodium atoms for the saturation of ZGNR edges at half the concentration of edge-carbon atoms make it a one dimensional, perfect semimetal, where the valance and conduction bands meet at only a single, Dirac-like point. Unlike pristine graphene, the Dirac-"cones" of Na-ZGNR is not symmetric with respect to wave vector, but rather it is tilt…
Spin lattice relaxation rate is investigated for 3D tilted cone Weyl semimetals (TCWSMs). The nuclear spin relaxation rate is presented as a function of temperature and tilt parameter. We find that the relaxation rate behaves as $(1-ζ^2)^{-α}$ with $α\approx 9$ where $0\le ζ< 1$ is the tilt parameter. We demonstrate that such a strong enhancement for $ζ\lesssim 1$ that gives rise to very fast relaxation rates, is contributed by the combined effect of a new hyperfine interactions arising from the tilt itself, and the anisotropy of the ellipsoidal Fermi surface. Extracting an effective density o…
Graphene, topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals are three widely studied materials classes which possess Dirac or Weyl cones arising from either sublattice symmetry or spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we present a theory of a new class of bulk Dirac and Weyl cones, dubbed Weyl orbital semimetals, where the orbital polarization and texture inversion between two electronic states at discrete momenta lend itself into protected Dirac or Weyl cones without spin-orbit coupling. We also predict several families of Weyl orbital semimetals including V$_3$S$_4$, NiTi3S6, BLi, and PbO$_2$ via fir…
Type-II Weyl semimetals are characterized by the tilted linear dispersion in the low-energy excitations, mimicking Weyl fermions but with manifest violation of the Lorentz invariance, which has intriguing quantum transport properties. The magnetoconductivity of type-II Weyl semimetals is investigated numerically based on lattice models in parallel electric and magnetic field. We show that in the high-field regime, the sign of the magnetoconductivity of an inversion-symmetry-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals depends on the direction of the magnetic field, whereas in the weak field regime, positi…
We propose that the noncentrosymmetric LiGaGe-type hexagonal $ABC$ crystal SrHgPb realizes a new type of topological semimetal that hosts both Dirac and Weyl points in momentum space. The symmetry-protected Dirac points arise due to a band inversion and are located on the sixfold rotation $z$-axis, whereas the six pairs of Weyl points related by sixfold symmetry are located on the perpendicular $k_z=0$ plane. By studying the electronic structure as a function of the buckling of the HgPb layer, which is the origin of inversion symmetry breaking, we establish that the coexistence of Dirac and We…
The recent discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs offers the first Weyl fermion observed in nature and dramatically broadens the classification of topological phases. However, in TaAs it has proven challenging to study the rich transport phenomena arising from emergent Weyl fermions. The series Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ are inversion-breaking, layered, tunable semimetals already under study as a promising platform for new electronics and recently proposed to host Type II, or strongly Lorentz-violating, Weyl fermions. Here we report the discovery of a Weyl semimetal in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ at $x = …
We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed -- the Weyl cones are "tilted" -- the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields, and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast to the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in…
We investigate the orthorhombic phase (Td) of layered transition-metal-dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ as a Weyl semimetal candidate, which was discovered to be a superconductor in our recent experiment. MoTe$_2$ exhibits four pairs of Weyl points lying slightly ($\sim$ 6 meV) above the Fermi energy in the bulk band structure. Unlike its cousin WTe$_2$, which was predicted to be a type-II Weyl semimetal recently, the spacing between each pair of Weyl points is found to be as large as 4 percent of the reciprocal lattice in MoTe$_2$ (six times larger than that of WTe$_2$). When projected to the surface,…
Weyl semimetals (WSM) exhibit chiral anomaly in their magnetotransport due to broken conservation laws. Here, we analyze the magnetotransport of WSM in the presence of the time-reversal symmetry-breaking tilt parameter. The analytical expression for the magnetoconductivity is derived in the small tilt limit using the semiclassical Boltzmann equation. We predict a planar Hall current which flows transverse to the electric field and in the plane containing magnetic and electric fields and scales linearly with the tilt parameter. A tilt-induced transverse conductivity is also present in the case …
We propose that a Floquet Weyl semimetal state can be induced in three-dimensional topological insulators, either nonmagnetic or magnetic, by the application of off-resonant light. The virtual photon processes play a critical role in renormalizing the Dirac mass and so resulting in a topological semimetal with vanishing gap at Weyl points. The present mechanism via off-resonant light is quite different from that via on-resonant light, the latter being recently suggested to give rise to a Floquet topological state in ordinary band insulators.
Weyl semimetals are crystalline solids that host emergent relativistic Weyl fermions and have characteristic surface Fermi-arcs in their electronic structure. Weyl semimetals with broken time reversal symmetry are difficult to identify unambiguously. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we visualized the electronic structure of the ferromagnetic crystal Co3Sn2S2 and discovered its characteristic surface Fermi-arcs and linear bulk band dispersions across the Weyl points. These results establish Co3Sn2S2 as a magnetic Weyl semimetal that may serve as a platform for real…
We investigate the tunneling conductance of Weyl semimetal with tilted energy dispersion by considering electron transmission through a p-n-p junction with one-dimensional electric and magnetic barrier. In the presence of both electric and magnetic barriers, we found that a large conductance gap can be produced by the aid of tilted energy dispersion without a band gap. The origin of this effect is the shift of the electrons wave-vector at barrier boundaries caused by i) the pseudo-magnetic field induced by electrical potential, i.e., a newly discovered feature that is only possible in the mate…
The Onsager-Casimir reciprocal relations are a fundamental symmetry of nonequilibrium statistical systems. Here we study an unusual chirality-dependent Hall effect in a tilted Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ with broken time reversal symmetry. It is confirmed that the reciprocal relations are satisfied. Since two Berry curvature effects, an anomalous velocity and a chiral chemical potential, contribute to the observed Hall effect, the reciprocal relations suggest their intriguing connection.
We analyze the effect of the tilt on the transverse thermoelectric coefficient of Weyl semimetals in the \emph{conformal} limit, i.e., zero temperature and zero chemical potential. Using the Kubo formalism, we find a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermoelectric conductivity as a function of the tilt perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a linear behavior when the tilt is aligned to the magnetic field. An ``axial Nernst" current (chiral currents counter propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient) is generated in inversion symmetric Weyl materials when the t…
We have generalized a quasiclassical model for Weyl semimetals with a tilted band in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. This model is applicable to ballistic, moderately disordered, and samples containing a high density of nonmagnetic impurities. We employ this formalism and show that a self-biased supercurrent, creating a ϕ0-junction, can flow through a triplet channel in Weyl semimetals. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that multiple supercurrent reversals are accessible through varying junction thickness and parameters characterizing Weyl semimetals. We discuss the in…
We study the conductivity of two-dimensional graphene-type materials with tilted cones as well as their three-dimensional Weyl counterparts and show that a covariant quantum Boltzmann equation is capable of providing an accurate description of these materials' transport properties. The validity of the covariant Boltzmann approach is corroborated by calculations within the Kubo formula. We find a strong anisotropy in the conductivities parallel and perpendicular to the tilt direction upon increase of the tilt parameter $η$, which can be interpreted as the boost parameter of a Lorentz transforma…
We study dynamical mass generation and the resultant helical spin orders in topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals, including the edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators, the surface states of weak topological insulators, and the bulk materials of Weyl semimetals. In particular, the helical spin textures of Weyl semimetals manifest the spin-momentum locking of Weyl fermions in a visible manner. The spin-wave fluctuations of the helical order carry electric charge density; therefore, the spin textures can be electrically controlled in a simple and predictable manner.
Although Lorentz invariance forbids the presence of a term that tilts the energy-momentum relation in the Weyl Hamiltonian, a tilted dispersion is not forbidden and, in fact, generic for condensed matter realizations of Weyl semimetals. We here investigate the combined effect of such a tilted Weyl dispersion and the presence of potential disorder. In particular, we address the influence of a tilt on the disorder-induced phase transition between a quasi-ballistic phase at weak disorder, in which the disorder is an irrelevant perturbation, and a diffusive phase at strong disorder. Our main resul…
Weyl semimetals have been classified into type-I and type-II with respect to the geometry of their Fermi surfaces at the Weyl points. Here, we propose a new class of Weyl semimetal, whose unique Fermi surface contains two electron or two hole pockets touching at a multi-Weyl point, dubbed as type-III Weyl semimetal. Based on first-principles calculations, we first show that quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I is a type-III Weyl semimetal with larger chiral charges. (TaSe4)2I can support four-fold helicoidal surface states with remarkably long Fermi arcs on the (001) surface. Angle-resolve…
Tilting the Weyl cone breaks the Lorentz invariance and enriches the Weyl physics. Here, we report the observation of a magnetic-field-antisymmetric Seebeck effect in a tilted Weyl semimetal, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. Moreover, it is found that the Seebeck effect and the Nernst effect are antisymmetric in both the in-plane magnetic field and the magnetization. We attribute these exotic effects to the one-dimensional chiral anomaly and phase space correction due to the Berry curvature. The observation is further reproduced by a theoretical calculation, taking into account the orbital magnetization.
The recent explosion of research interest in Weyl semimetals has led to many proposed Weyl semimetal candidates and a few experimental observations of a Weyl semimetal in real materials. Through this experience, we have come to appreciate that typical Weyl semimetals host many Weyl points. For instance, the first Weyl semimetal observed in experiment, TaAs, hosts 24 Weyl points. Similarly, the Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ series, recently under study as the first Type II Weyl semimetal, has eight Weyl points. However, it is well-understood that for a Weyl semimetal without inversion symmetry but with…
From the Kubo formula for transport in a tilted Weyl semimetal we calculate the absorptive part of the dynamic conductivity for both right and left handed circular polarized light. These depend on the real part of the longitudinal conductivity and the imaginary part of the transverse (Hall) conductivity. We include the effect of the chiral anomaly which pumps charge from negative to positive chirality node when the usual ${\bs E}\cdot{\bs B}$ term is included in the electrodynamics and obtain analytic expressions. To calculate the Hall angle we further provide expressions for the imaginary par…
We consider the impact of disorder on the spectrum of three-dimensional nodal-line semimetals. We show that the combination of disorder and a tilted spectrum naturally leads to a non-Hermitian self-energy contribution that can split a nodal line into a pair of exceptional lines. These exceptional lines form the boundary of an open and orientable bulk Fermi ribbon in reciprocal space on which the energy gap vanishes. We find that the orientation and shape of such a disorder-induced bulk Fermi ribbon is controlled by the tilt direction and the disorder properties, which can also be exploited to …
A relativistic spinor with spin 3/2 is historically called Rarita-Schwinger spinor. The right- and left-handed chiral degrees of freedom for the massless Rarita-Schwinger spinor are independent and are thought of as the left- and right-Weyl fermion with helicity \pm3/2. We study three orbital spin-1/2 Weyl semimetals in the strong spin-orbital coupling limit with time reversal symmetry breaking. We find that in this limit the systems can be a J_{eff}=1/2 Weyl semimetal or a J_{eff}=3/2 semimetal, depending on the Fermi level position. The latter near Weyl points includes both degrees of freedo…
We present systematic theoretical studies of both bulk and surface electromagnetic eigenmodes, or polaritons, in Weyl semimetals. We derive the tensors of bulk and surface conductivity taking into account all possible combinations of the optical transitions involving bulk and surface electron states. We show how information about electronic structure of Weyl semimetals, such as position and separation of Weyl nodes, Fermi energy, and Fermi arc surface states, can be unambiguously extracted from measurements of the dispersion, transmission, reflection, and polarization of electromagnetic waves.
Kramers Weyl semimetals are Weyl semimetals that have Weyl points pinned at the time reversal invariant momenta. Recently it has been discovered that all chiral crystals host Weyl points at time reversal invariant momenta, so metals with chiral lattice symmetry all belong to the category of Kramers Weyl semimetals. In this work, we show that due to the chiral lattice symmetry, Kramers Weyl semimetals have the unique longitudinal magnetoelectric effect in which the charge current induced spin and orbital magnetization is parallel to the direction of the current. This feature allows Kramers Weyl…
Magnetotransport and magneto-optics experiments offer a very powerful probe for studying the physical properties of materials. Here, we investigate the second-order nonlinear magnetoconductivity of tilted type-I Weyl and multi-Weyl semimetal. In contrast to the presence of chiral anomaly in the linear response regime, we show that Weyl semimetal do not host chiral charge pumping in the nonlinear transport regime. We predict that an inversion symmetry broken and tilted Weyl semimetal can support finite longitudinal nonlinear magnetoconductivity, which is otherwise absent in untilted Weyl semime…
We study the dynamic chiral magnetic conductivity (DCMC) and natural optical activity in an inversion-broken tilted Weyl semimetal (WSM). Starting from the Kubo formula, we derive the analytical expressions for the DCMC for two different directions of the incident electromagnetic wave. We show that the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of the transmitted wave exhibits remarkable anisotropic behavior and is larger along the tilt direction. This striking anisotropy of DCMC which results in anisotropic optical activity and rotary power, can be experimentally observed as a topological…
Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) is an essential long range magnetic interaction between magnetic impurities or magnetic layered structures, the magnitude of which oscillates with the distance ($\mathrm{R}$) between them. We have investigated the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities in both time-reversal and inversion symmetry broken Weyl semimetals (WSMs) where the energy dispersion is tilted in momentum space and the momentum of the conduction electron is locked with the pseudo-spin. Two important features are revealed, firstly, at the small tilt limit, we show that the RKKY …
Topological Weyl semimetals can host Weyl nodes with monopole charges in momentum space. How to detect the signature of the monopole charges in quantum transport remains a challenging topic. Here, we reveal the connection between the parity of monopole charge in topological semimetals and the quantum interference corrections to the conductivity. We show that the parity of monopole charge determines the sign of the quantum interference correction, with odd and even parity yielding the weak anti-localization and weak localization effects, respectively. This is attributed to the Berry phase diffe…
Recently, a new type of Weyl semimetal called type-II Weyl semimetal has been proposed. Unlike the usual (type-I) Weyl semimetal, which has a point-like Fermi surface, this new type of Weyl semimetal has a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl point. Here we calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity of a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum for a pair of Weyl points, using the Kubo formula. We find that the Hall conductivity is not universal and can change sign as a function of the parameters quantifying the tilts. Our results suggest that even for the case where the separation betw…
We propose a torsional response raised by lattice dislocation in Weyl semimetals akin to chiral magnetic effect; i.e. a fictitious magnetic field arising from screw or edge dislocation induces charge current. We demonstrate that, in sharp contrast to the usual chiral magnetic effect which vanishes in real solid state materials, the torsional chiral magnetic effect exists even for realistic lattice models, which implies the experimental detection of the effect via SQUID or nonlocal resistivity measurements in Weyl semimetal materials.
Weyl fermions, which are fermions with definite chiralities, can give rise to anomalous breaking of the symmetry of the physical system which they are a part of. In their (3+1)-dimensional realizations in condensed matter systems, i.e., the so-called Weyl semimetals, this anomaly gives rise to topological electromagnetic response of magnetic fluctuations, which takes the form of non-local interaction between magnetic fluctuations and electromagnetic fields. We study the physical consequences of this non-local interaction, including electric field assisted magnetization dynamics, an extra gaple…
A new type of angular oscillations of the high-frequency conductivity for conductors with a band-contact line has been predicted. The effect is caused by groups of charge carriers near the self-intersection points of the Fermi surface, where the electron energy spectrum is near-linear and can be described by anisotropic Dirac cone model. The amplitude of the resonance peaks satisfies the simple sum rule. The ease in changing the degree of anisotropy of the Dirac cone due to the angle of inclination of the magnetic field makes the considered type of oscillations attractive for experimental obse…
We present a new switching mechanism that utilizes the proximity coupling between the surface spin texture of a Weyl semimetal and a superconductor, in a Weyl semimetal/superconductor/Weyl semimetal trilayer heterostructure. We show that the superconductivity in the middle layer can be fully suppressed by the surface spin texture of the Weyl semimetals in the presence of an external magnetic field, but it can be recovered again by only changing the field direction. The restoration of the middle-layer superconductivity indicates a sharp transition to a low-resistance state. This sharp switching…
Multi-band touchings such as 3-band, 6-band and 8-band touchings together with the emergence of high pseudospin fermions were predicted recently at high-symmetry points in three-dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a simple cubic model whose unit cell contains three atoms. There are 6 bands in the system due to the spin degrees of freedom. The 4-band and 2-band touchings are realized at high-symmetry points, where we derive low-energy theories, demonstrating the emergence of pseudospin-3/2 fermions and Weyl fermions, respectively. Away from the high-symmetry points, we find critical We…
