Hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) is not only a critical part of the Standard Model (SM) prediction for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $(g-2)_μ$, but also a crucial ingredient for global fits to electroweak (EW) precision observables due to its contribution to the running of the fine-structure constant encoded in $Δα^{(5)}_\text{had}$. We find that with modern EW precision data, including the measurement of the Higgs mass, the global fit alone provides a competitive, independent determination of $Δα^{(5)}_\text{had}\big|_\text{EW}=270.2(3.0)\times 10^{-4}$. This value actually lies below the range derived from $e^+e^-\to\text{hadrons}$ cross-section data, and thus goes into the opposite direction as would be required if a change in HVP were to bring the SM prediction for $(g-2)_μ$ into agreement with the Brookhaven measurement. Depending on the energy where the bulk of the changes in the cross section occurs, reconciling experiment and SM prediction for $(g-2)_μ$ by adjusting HVP would thus not necessarily weaken the case for physics beyond the SM (BSM), but to some extent shift it from $(g-2)_μ$ to the EW fit. We briefly explore some options of BSM scenarios that could conceivably explain the ensuing tension.
The dispersive approach to QCD is briefly overviewed and its application to the assessment of hadronic contributions to electroweak observables is discussed.
The Fermi constant ($G_F$) is extremely well measured through the muon lifetime, defining one of the key fundamental parameters in the Standard Model (SM). Therefore, to search for physics beyond the SM (BSM) via $G_F$, the constraining power is determined by the precision of the second-best independent determination of $G_F$. The best alternative extractions of $G_F$ proceed either via the global electroweak (EW) fit or from superallowed $β$ decays in combination with the Cabibbo angle measured in kaon, $τ$, or $D$ decays. Both variants display some tension with $G_F$ from muon decay, albeit …
The current electroweak data and the constraints on the Higgs mass are discussed. Within the context of the Standard Model the data prefer a relatively light Higgs mass.
Dispersive approach to quantum chromodynamics is applied to the assessment of hadronic contributions to electroweak observables. The employed approach merges the corresponding perturbative input with intrinsically nonperturbative constraints, which originate in the respective kinematic restrictions. The evaluated hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and to the shift of the electromagnetic fine structure constant at the scale of Z boson mass conform with recent assessments of these quantities.
While it is known that third family hypercharge models can explain the neutral current $B-$anomalies, it was hitherto unclear whether the $Z-Z^\prime$ mixing predicted by such models could simultaneously fit electroweak precision observables. Here, we perform global fits of several third family hypercharge models to a combination of electroweak data and those data pertinent to the neutral current $B-$anomalies. While the Standard Model is in tension with this combined data set with a $p-$value of $.00068$, simple versions of the models (fitting two additional parameters each) provide much impr…
We study elelctroweak penguin contributions in pure hadronic $B$ decays in the Standard and two-Higgs-doublet models. We find that in $B_s\rightarrow π^0 (η\;, ϕ)$ and $B_s\rightarrow ρ^0 (η\;, ϕ)$ decays, the electroweak penguin contributions dominate over all other contribuitons. These processes provide unique signatures of electroweak penguin in pure hadronic processes. These modes could be in measureable range of future $B$ facilities.
We reanalyze the two-loop electroweak hadronic contributions to the muon g-2 that may be enhanced by large logarithms. The present evaluation is improved over those already existing in the literature by the implementation of the current algebra Ward identities and the inclusion of the correct short-distance QCD behaviour of the relevant hadronic Green's function.
The current status of the quantities entering into the global electroweak fits is reviewed, highlighting changes since Summer 2003. These data include the precision electroweak properties of the Z and W bosons, the top-quark mass and the value of the electromagnetic coupling constant, at the scale of the Z boson mass. Using these Z and W (high Q^2) data, the value of the Higss mass is extracted, within the context of the Standard Model (SM). The consistency of the data, and the overall agreement with the SM, are discussed.
Reaching the desired precision level for W and Z processes at the LHC will require a mixture of higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections. HERWIRI2 is a step in implementing QED x QCD exponentiation in a hadronic event generator. This program implements leading electroweak corrections and coherent exclusive exponentiation in a HERWIG environment. We discuss the status of the program, recent tests, and future developments.
Using optical theorem within sophisticated fits for exclusive hadronic productions in $e^+e^-$ collisions the interference between leptonic and hadronic vacuum polarization functions is considered and applied for calculation of $μ-$pair productions below 3 GeV. Particularly, the dispersion relation for the pion production form factor was obtained, confirming a possible evidence for the light $ρ(1250)$ resonance. The inflated error was introduced and used to discriminate the quality of various phenomenological fits. Resulting hadronic vacuum polarization was compared with other conventional sou…
We present the complete computation of the tree-level and the next-to-leading order electroweak contributions to bottom-squark pair production at the LHC. The computation is performed within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We discuss the numerical impact of these contributions in several supersymmetric scenarios.
We present an analysis of two-loop mixed QCD and electroweak corrections to the decay of the Z boson into light quarks. We find that the naive factorization of QCD and electroweak corrections does not describe correctly the two-loop effects. The nonfactorizable corrections shift the width of the Z boson by approximately -0.55(3) MeV and increase the central value of the strong coupling constant determined at LEP by 0.001.
We discuss a preliminary study of the impact of duality violations on extractions from tau decay data of the D=6 VEVs which determine chiral limit Standard Model K-->pi pi matrix elements of the electroweak penguin operators.
We study the expected phenomenology at present (Tevatron) and future (Tevatron Upgrade, LHC) hadronic colliders of a model describing a strong electroweak symmetry breaking sector with both vector and axial vector strong interacting bosons degenerate in mass. Due to decoupling, this model at low energies is almost indistinguishable from the Standard Model, passing therefore all low energy precision tests at LEPI. We will show that it gives quite visible signals at forthcoming hadronic accelerators. The new charged vector bosons can be detected more easily than the neutral ones.
We update the global fit to electroweak precision observables, including the effect of the latest measurements at hadron colliders of the $W$ and top-quark masses and the effective leptonic weak mixing angle. We comment on the impact of these measurements in terms of constraints on new physics. We also update the bounds derived from the fit to the Higgs-boson signal strengths, including the observables measured at the LHC Run 2, and compare the improvements with respect to the 7 and 8 TeV results.
We consider hadronic production of a Z boson in association with a jet and study one- and two-loop electroweak logarithmic corrections in the region of high Z-boson transverse momentum, p_T >> M_Z, including leading and next-to-leading logarithms. Numerical results for the LHC and Tevatron colliders are presented. At the LHC these corrections amount to tens of per cent and will be important for interpretation of the measurements.
Presented are complete next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) corrections to top-squark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). At this order, also effects from the interference of EW and QCD contributions have to be taken into account. Moreover, photon-induced top-squark production is considered as an additional partonic channel, which arises from the non-zero photon density in the proton.
It is found that in presence of electroweak interactions the gauge covariant diagonalization of the axial-vector -- pseudoscalar mixing in the effective meson Lagrangian leads to a deviation from the vector meson and the axial-vector meson dominance of the entire hadronic electroweak current. The essential features of such a modification of the theory are investigated in the framework of the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with explicit breaking of chiral $U(2) \times U(2)$ symmetry. The Schwinger-DeWitt method is used as a major tool in our study of the real part of the relevant effective a…
Reaching the 1% precision level for W and Z production calculations for the LHC will require a mixture of higher order QCD and electroweak corrections. As a first step toward implementing the combined QED\otimesQCD exponentiation proposed in previous work, we have implemented the order alpha electroweak corrections and YFS exponentiation structure of the KK Monte Carlo in HERWIG. We discuss the current status of this program and sketch the further developments needed to reach the desired precision level.
We present a discussion on the methods for extracting a given parameter from measurements of hadronic data, with particular focus on determinations of the strong coupling constant. We show that when the PDF dependency on the determination is adequately taken into account, the dispersion between the results from different measurements is significantly reduced. We speculatively propose the concept of preferred value of a parameter from a particular dataset.
The Minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) with light stops, charginos or pseudoscalar Higgs bosons has been suggested as an explanation of the too high value of the branching ratio of the Z0 boson into b quarks (Rb anomaly). A program including all radiative corrections to the MSSM at the same level as the radiative corrections to the SM has been developed and used to perform global fits to all electroweak data from LEP, SLC and the Tevatron. The probability of the global fit improves from 8% in the SM to 18% in the MSSM. Including the b->s gamma rate, as measured by CL…
We develop five new statistical measures of the quality of fits, which we combine with the usual confidence level to determine the models which fit best all available data for total cross sections and for the real part of the forward hadronic amplitude.
We report on a recent calculation of the electroweak O(α^3α_s) corrections to 3-jet production and related event-shape observables at e+e- colliders. The calculation properly accounts for the experimental photon isolation criteria and for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section. Corrections to the normalised event-shape distributions, which are exemplarily discussed here for the thrust distribution at LEP and linear-collider energies, turn out to be at the few-per-cent level and show remnants of the radiative return to the Z pole even after inclusion of appropriate cuts.
We consider the production of squarks and gluinos at hadronic colliders. An overview over the class of processes is given. We investigate in detail the tree-level and higher order EW contributions to the cross sections. Special care has to be taken to obtain infrared finite observables. We study numerically stop--anti-stop and squark--gluino production at the LHC.
The hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and to the shift of the electromagnetic fine structure constant at the scale of Z boson mass are evaluated within dispersively improved perturbation theory (DPT). The latter merges the corresponding perturbative input with intrinsically nonperturbative constraints, which originate in the respective kinematic restrictions. The obtained results conform with recent assessments of the quantities on hand.
For a long time, global fits of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model (SM) have been used to exploit measurements of electroweak precision observables at lepton colliders (LEP, SLC), together with measurements at hadron colliders (Tevatron, LHC), and accurate theoretical predictions at multi-loop level, to constrain free parameters of the SM, such as the Higgs and top masses. Today, all fundamental SM parameters entering these fits are experimentally determined, including information on the Higgs couplings, and the global fits are used as powerful tools to assess the validity of the the…
We assess the impact of the very recent measurement of the top-quark mass by the CMS Collaboration on the fit of electroweak data in the Standard Model and beyond, with particular emphasis on the prediction for the mass of the W boson. We then compare this prediction with the average of the corresponding experimental measurements including the new measurement by the CDF Collaboration, and discuss its compatibility in the Standard Model, in new physics models with oblique corrections, and in the dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory. Finally, we present the updated global fit to e…
In this talk I present the total cross sections, accurate at the NLO in QCD, for rare Standard-Model hadroproduction processes involving multi-Higgs-boson, multi-electroweak-boson and multi-top-quark final states. The comparison between cross sections at the LHC and at a future circular hadronic collider with up to 100 TeV centre-of-mass energy is detailed. Results relevant to the hadronic production of five electroweak bosons, and of a top-antitop pair in association with an electroweak vector boson and two jets are presented here for the first time with NLO accuracy.
The analysis of hadronic vector boson decays at LHC does not normally allow for interference with QCD production. These effects are studied here using the Sherpa package and can move by several GeV/c 2 the peak positions experiments would reconstruct. However, their impact depends strongly on the kinematics involved. The shifts expected in boosted W and Z bosons, which have been the subject of experimental study, are explored for the first time. The effects in the channels examined are all very small or negligible, but this may not true if lower transverse momenta are analysed, for example in …
We present a complete calculation of the electroweak O(alpha^3 alpha_s) corrections to three-jet production and related event-shape observables at electron--positron colliders. The Z-boson resonance is described within the complex-mass scheme, rendering the calculation valid both in the resonance and off-shell regions. Higher-order initial-state radiation is included in the leading-logarithmic approximation. We properly account for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section and for the experimental photon isolation criteria. To this end we implement contributions of the quark-to-photo…
Using experimental spectral data for hadronic tau decays from the OPAL experiment, supplemented by a phenomenologically successful parameterization for the high-s region not covered by the data, we construct a physically constrained model of the isospin-one vector-channel polarization function. Having such a model as a function of Euclidean momentum Q^2 allows us to explore the systematic error associated with fits to the Q^2 dependence of lattice data for the hadronic electromagnetic current polarization function which have been used in attempts to compute the leading order hadronic contribut…
At Run II of the Tevatron it will be possible to measure the W boson mass with a relative precision of about 2 times 10^-4, which will eventually represent the best measured observable beyond the input parameters of the SM. Proper interpretation of such an ultrahigh precision measurement, either within the SM or beyond, requires the meticulous implementation and control of higher order radiative corrections. The FORTRAN package GAPP, described here, is specifically designed to meet this need and to ensure the highest possible degrees of accuracy, reliability, adaptability, and efficiency.
We present results for the hadronic running of the electromagnetic coupling and the weak mixing angle from simulations of lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions. Using two different discretisations of the vector current, we compute the quark-connected and -disconnected contributions to the hadronic vacuum polarisation (HVP) functions $\barΠ^{γγ}$ and $\barΠ^{Zγ}$ for spacelike squared momenta $Q^2\leq 7$ $\mathrm{GeV}^2$. Our results are extrapolated to the physical point using ensembles at four lattice spacings, with pion masses ranging from 130 to 420 MeV. We …
The electromagnetic coupling $α$ and the electroweak mixing angle $θ_{\mathrm{W}}$ are parameters of the Standard Model (SM) that enter precision SM tests and play a fundamental rôle in beyond SM physics searches. Their values are energy dependent, and non-perturbative hadronic contributions are the main source of uncertainty to the theoretical knowledge of the running with energy. We present a lattice study of the leading hadronic contribution to the running of $α$ and $\sin^2θ_{\mathrm{W}}$. The former is related to the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) function of electromagnetic currents,…

The O(α) electroweak radiative corrections to the process pp, ppbar\to W \to\ell^\pmν(\ell=e,μ) are calculated. The O(α) corrections can be decomposed into separately gauge invariant contributions to the W boson production and decay processes. Factorizing the collinear singularity associated with initial state photon radiation into the parton distribution functions, we find that initial state corrections have a significantly smaller effect than final state radiative corrections. We study in detail the effect of electroweak radiative corrections on a number of interesting observables: the W tra…
A program including all radiative corrections to the MSSM at the same level as the radiative corrections to the SM has been developed and used to perform global fits to all electroweak data from LEP, SLC and the Tevatron and the radiative b->sgamma decay from CLEO. Values of the strong coupling constant at the $M_Z$ scale and $\sin^2θ_{\overline{MS}}$ are derived, both in the SM and MSSM. Recent updates on electroweak data, which have been presented at the Warsaw Conference in summer 1996, reduce the R_b anomaly from a 3.2 sigma to a 1.8 sigma effect. In addition, the $b \to sγ$ decay is 30% b…
Recently the development of chiral perturbation theory has allowed the generation of rigorous low-energy theorems for various hadronic processes based only on the chiral invariance of the underlying QCD Lagrangian. Herein we examine the experimental implications of chiral symmetry in the regime of electroweak Goldstone boson interactions. Contribution to BNL Hadronic Beam Physics Workshop.
We study effects of new physics beyond the Standard Model on SU(3) symmetry in charmless hadronic two body B decays. It is found that several equalities for some of the decay amplitudes, such as $A(B_d (B_u) \to π^+π^-,π^+ K^- (π^- \bar K^0)) =A(B_s \to K^+ π^-, K^- K^+ (K^0 \bar K^0))$, $A(B_d \to π^+ρ^-, π^- ρ^+, K^-ρ^+, π^+ K^{*-}) = A(B_s \to K^+ ρ^-, π^- K^{*+}, K^- K^{*+}, K^+ K^{*-})$, $A(B_d (B_u) \to ρ^+ρ^-, ρ^+ K^{*-}(ρ^- \bar K^{*0})) =A(B_s \to K^{*+} ρ^-, K^{*-} K^{*+} (K^{*0} \bar K^{*0}))$, predicted by SU(3) symmetry in the SM are not affected by new physics. These relations pr…
We construct a physically motivated model for the isospin-one non-strange vacuum polarization function Pi(Q^2) based on a spectral function given by vector-channel OPAL data from hadronic tau decays for energies below the tau mass and a successful parametrization, employing perturbation theory and a model for quark-hadron duality violations, for higher energies. Using a covariance matrix and Q^2 values from a recent lattice simulation, we then generate fake data for Pi(Q^2) and use it to test fitting methods currently employed on the lattice for extracting the hadronic vacuum polarization cont…
We discuss, within the framework of the Standard Model, the calculation of the two-loop electroweak contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon involving triangle fermionic loops of leptons and quarks. Because of the large ratios of masses involved, these contributions are rather large. The result we obtain differs from a previous estimate reported in the literature. The discrepancy originates in the cancellation of anomalies in $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$, a cancellation that requires the consideration of both leptons {\it and} quarks within each generation and that ha…
As present and future experiments, on both the energy and precision frontiers, look to identify new physics beyond the Standard Model, we require more precise determinations of fundamental quantities, like the QED and electroweak couplings at various momenta. These can be obtained either entirely from experimental measurements, or from one such measurement at a particular virtuality combined with the couplings' virtuality dependence computed within the SM. Thus, a precise, entirely theoretical determination of the running couplings is highly desirable, even more since the preliminary results o…
We study the impact of electroweak radiative corrections on direct production of photons with high transverse momenta at hadron colliders. Analytic results for the weak one-loop corrections to the parton scattering reaction $\bar q q \to γg$ and its crossed variants are presented. For the high-energy region, where the corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of $\hat s/M_W^2$, we derive simple asymptotic expressions which approximate the exact one-loop results with high precision. The dominant two-loop electroweak contributions are also calculated. Numerical results are presented for th…
In the global fit of the Standard Model using Gfitter, electroweak precision observables as well as constraints from direct Higgs searches have been compared with state-of-the-art electroweak predictions. We use the most recent results for direct Higgs searches at LEP and Tevatron and the latest measurements of m_t and M_W. Example results are an estimation of the mass of the Higgs boson (M_H=116.3 +15.6 -1.3 GeV) and a forth-order result for the strong coupling constant (alpha_S(M_Z^2)=0.1193 +-0.0028(exp) +-0.0001(theo)). A fit of the oblique parameters (STU) to the electroweak data is perfo…

We present updated global fits of the Standard Model and beyond to electroweak precision data, taking into account recent progress in theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. From the fits, we derive model-independent constraints on new physics by introducing oblique and epsilon parameters, and modified $Zb\bar{b}$ and $HVV$ couplings. Furthermore, we also perform fits of the scale factors of the Higgs-boson couplings to observed signal strengths of the Higgs boson.
A program including all radiative corrections to the MSSM at the same level as the radiative corrections to the SM has been developed and used to perform global fits to all electroweak data from LEP, SLC and the Tevatron and the radiative b->sgamma decay from CLEO. Values of the strong coupling constant at the M_Z scale and $\sin^2θ_{\overline{MS}}$ are derived, both in the SM and MSSM. Recent updates on ectroweak data, which have been presented at the Warsaw Conference in summer 1996, reduce the R_b anomaly from a 3.2 σto a 1.8 σeffect. In addition, the $b\rightarrow sγ$ decay is 30% below th…
The energy dependency (running) of the strength of electromagnetic interactions $α$ plays an important role in precision tests of the Standard Model. The running of the former to the $Z$ pole is an input quantity for global electroweak fits, while the running of the mixing angle is susceptible to the effects of Beyond Standard Model physics, particularly at low energies. We present a computation of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the running of these electroweak couplings at the non-perturbative level in lattice QCD, in the space-like regime up to $Q^2$ momentum transfer…
The global fit of the Standard Model to electroweak precision data, routinely performed by the LEP electroweak working groups and others, has been revisited in view of (i) the development of the new generic fitting package, Gfitter, (ii) the insertion of constraints from direct Higgs searches at LEP and Tevatron, and (iii) a more thorough statistical interpretation of the results. This paper describes the Gfitter project, and presents state-of-the-art results for the global electroweak fit in the Standard Model, and for a model with an extended Higgs sector. Example results are an estimation o…
We compute the electroweak (EW) contributions to squark--squark pair production processes at the LHC within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Both tree-level EW contributions, of O(alpha_s alpha + alpha^2), and next-to-leading order (NLO) EW corrections, of O(alpha_s^2 alpha), are calculated. Depending on the flavor and chirality of the produced quarks, many interferences between EW-mediated and QCD-mediated diagrams give non-zero contributions at tree-level and NLO. We discuss the computational techniques and present an extensive numerical analysis for inclusi…
Hadronic tau decay data provides access to the light quark vector (V) and axial vector (A) spectral functions. This makes possible investigations of the dynamics of QCD at intermediate scales and improved determinations of certain QCD/Standard Model parameters. We discuss three such applications: (1) the investigation of the nature of duality violation in QCD at intermediate scales (and its relation to the determination of alpha_s); (2) the extraction of m_s from flavor-breaking differences of flavor 'ud' and 'us' data; and (3) the determination of the dimension D=6 term in the OPE for the fla…
The angle $γ$ of the standard CKM unitarity triangle can be determined from tree-level $B$-meson decays essentially without hadronic uncertainties. We calculate the second-order electroweak corrections for the $B \to D π$ modes and show that their impact on the determination of $γ$ could be enhanced by an accidental cancellation of poorly known hadronic matrix elements. However, we do not expect the resulting shift in $γ$ to exceed $\big|δγ^{Dπ} /γ\big| \lesssim {\mathcal O}\big(10^{-4}\big)$.
The LHCb measurements on the B ->$ K^*$$μ^+ μ^-$ angular observables have shown slight deviations from their Standard Model predictions. The significance of the deviations in the B -> $K^*$$μ^+ μ^-$ decay depends on the assumptions on the size of the non-factorisable power corrections. At present, there are no theoretical predictions on the size of these power corrections in order to identify whether the reason behind these anomalies is due to unknown hadronic corrections or New Physics effects. We have performed a statistical comparison of fitting the data to each of the possible explanations…
We present two new extractions of the QCD coupling constant at the Z pole, $α_S(m_Z)$, from detailed comparisons of inclusive W and Z hadronic decays data to state-of-the-art perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculations at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) accuracy, incorporating the latest experimental and theoretical developments. In the W boson case, the total width computed at N$^{3}$LO is used for the first time in the extraction. For the Z boson pseudo-observables, the N$^{3}$LO results are complemented with the full two- and partial three-loop electroweak corrections…
Nonperturbative QCD corrections are important to many low-energy electroweak observables, for example the muon magnetic moment. However, hadronic corrections also play a significant role at much higher energies due to their impact on the running of standard model parameters, such as the electromagnetic coupling. Currently, these hadronic contributions are accounted for by a combination of experimental measurements, effective field theory techniques and phenomenological modeling but ideally should be calculated from first principles. Recent developments indicate that many of the most important …
