Sets with atoms serve as an alternative to ZFC foundations for mathematics, where some infinite, though highly symmetric sets, behave in a finitistic way. Therefore, one can try to carry over analysis of the classical algorithms from finite structures to some infinite structures. Recent results show that this is indeed possible and leads to many practical applications. In this paper we shall take another route to finite analysis of infinite sets, which extends and sheds more light on sets with atoms. As an application of our theory we give a characterisation of languages recognized by automata definable in fragments of first-order logic.
We study model and frame definability of various modal logics. Let ML(A+) denote the fragment of modal logic extended with the universal modality in which the universal modality occurs only positively. We show that a class of Kripke models is definable in ML(A+) if and only if the class is elementary and closed under disjoint unions and surjective bisimulations. We also characterise the definability of ML(A+) in the spirit of the well-known Goldblatt--Thomason theorem. We show that an elementary class F of Kripke frames is definable in ML(A+) if and only if F is closed under taking generated s…
In the framework of propositional Łukasiewicz logic, a suitable notion of implicit definability, tailored to the intended real-valued semantics and referring to the elements of its domain, is introduced. Several variants of implicitly defining each of the rational elements in the standard semantics are explored, and based on that, a faithful interpretation of theories in Rational Pavelka logic in theories in Łukasiewicz logic is obtained. Some of these results were already presented in Hájek's "Metamathematics of Fuzzy Logic" as technical statements. A connection to the lack of (deductive) Bet…
In this paper we extend and prove in detail the Finite Rank Theorem for connection matrices of graph parameters definable in Monadic Second Order Logic with counting (CMSOL) from B. Godlin, T. Kotek and J.A. Makowsky (2008) and J.A. Makowsky (2009). We demonstrate its vast applicability in simplifying known and new non-definability results of graph properties and finding new non-definability results for graph parameters. We also prove a Feferman-Vaught Theorem for the logic CFOL, First Order Logic with the modular counting quantifiers.
We develop an algebraic notion of recognizability for languages of words indexed by countable linear orderings. We prove that this notion is effectively equivalent to definability in monadic second-order (MSO) logic. We also provide three logical applications. First, we establish the first known collapse result for the quantifier alternation of MSO logic over countable linear orderings. Second, we solve an open problem posed by Gurevich and Rabinovich, concerning the MSO-definability of sets of rational numbers using the reals in the background. Third, we establish the MSO-definability of the …
In this article, we study the complexity of weighted team definability for logics with team semantics. This problem is a natural analogue of one of the most studied problems in parameterized complexity, the notion of weighted Fagin-definability, which is formulated in terms of satisfaction of first-order formulas with free relation variables. We focus on the parameterized complexity of weighted team definability for a fixed formula phi of central team-based logics. Given a first-order structure A and the parameter value k as input, the question is to determine whether A,T models phi for some t…
We investigate the relationship between recursive enumerability and elementary frame definability in first-order predicate modal logic. On the one hand, it is well-known that every first-order predicate modal logic complete with respect to an elementary class of Kripke frames, i.e., a class of frames definable by a classical first-order formula, is recursively enumerable. On the other, numerous examples are known of predicate modal logics, based on `natural' propositional modal logics with essentially second-order Kripke semantics, that are either not recursively enumerable or Kripke incomplet…
We provide a decidable characterization of regular forest languages definable in FO2(<h,<v). By FO2(<h,<v) we refer to the two variable fragment of first order logic built from the descendant relation and the following sibling relation. In terms of expressive power it corresponds to a fragment of the navigational core of XPath that contains modalities for going up to some ancestor, down to some descendant, left to some preceding sibling, and right to some following sibling. We also show that our techniques can be applied to other two variable first-order logics having exactly the same vertical…
For every $q\in \mathbb N$ let $\textrm{FO}_q$ denote the class of sentences of first-order logic FO of quantifier rank at most $q$. If a graph property can be defined in $\textrm{FO}_q$, then it can be decided in time $O(n^q)$. Thus, minimizing $q$ has favorable algorithmic consequences. Many graph properties amount to the existence of a certain set of vertices of size $k$. Usually this can only be expressed by a sentence of quantifier rank at least $k$. We use the color-coding method to demonstrate that some (hyper)graph problems can be defined in $\textrm{FO}_q$ where $q$ is independent of …
Non-definability of languages by generalized first-order formulas over (N,+)
Finite valued constraint satisfaction problems are a formalism for describing many natural optimization problems, where constraints on the values that variables can take come with rational weights and the aim is to find an assignment of minimal cost. Thapper and Zivny have recently established a complexity dichotomy for finite valued constraint languages. They show that each such language either gives rise to a polynomial-time solvable optimization problem, or to an NP-hard one, and establish a criterion to distinguish the two cases. We refine the dichotomy by showing that all optimization pro…
Horn description logics are syntactically defined fragments of standard description logics that fall within the Horn fragment of first-order logic and for which ontology-mediated query answering is in PTime for data complexity. They were independently introduced in modal logic to capture the intersection of Horn first-order logic with modal logic. In this paper, we introduce model comparison games for the basic Horn description logic hornALC (corresponding to the basic Horn modal logic) and use them to obtain an Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé type definability result and a van Benthem style expressive co…
We prove that, similarly to known PSpace-completeness of recognising FO(<)-definability of the language L(A) of a DFA A, deciding both FO(<,C)- and FO(<,MOD)-definability are PSpace-complete. (Here, FO(<,C) extends the first-order logic FO(<) with the standard congruence modulo n relation, and FO(<,MOD) with the quantifiers checking whether the number of positions satisfying a given formula is divisible by a given n>1. These FO-languages are known to define regular languages that are decidable in AC0 and ACC0, respectively.) We obtain these results by first showing that known algebraic charact…
We show that the vast majority of extensions of the description logic $\mathcal{EL}$ do not enjoy the Craig interpolation nor the projective Beth definability property. This is the case, for example, for $\mathcal{EL}$ with nominals, $\mathcal{EL}$ with the universal role, $\mathcal{EL}$ with a role inclusion of the form $r\circ s\sqsubseteq s$, and for $\mathcal{ELI}$. It follows in particular that the existence of an explicit definition of a concept or individual name cannot be reduced to subsumption checking via implicit definability. We show that nevertheless the existence of interpolants …
Definability is a key notion in the theory of Grothendieck fibrations that characterises when an external property of objects can be accessed from within the internal logic of the base of a fibration. In this paper we consider a generalisation of definability from properties of objects to structures on objects, introduced by Shulman under the name local representability. We first develop some general theory and show how to recover existing notions due to Bénabou and Johnstone as special cases. We give several examples of definable and non definable notions o structure, focusing on algebraic we…
In this paper, we analyze timed systems with data structures, using a rich interplay of logic and properties of graphs. We start by describing behaviors of timed systems using graphs with timing constraints. Such a graph is called realizable if we can assign time-stamps to nodes or events so that they are consistent with the timing constraints. The logical definability of several graph properties has been a challenging problem, and we show, using a highly non-trivial argument, that the realizability property for collections of graphs with strict timing constraints is logically definable in a c…
We introduce the branching transitive closure operator on weighted monadic second-order logic formulas where the branching corresponds in a natural way to the branching inherent in trees. For arbitrary commutative semirings, we prove that weighted monadic second order logics on trees is equivalent to the definability by formulas which start with one of the following operators: (i) a branching transitive closure or (ii) an existential second-order quantifier followed by one universal first-order quantifier; in both cases the operator is applied to step-formulas over (a) Boolean first-order logi…
The Guarded Negation Fragment (GNFO) is a fragment of first-order logic that contains all positive existential formulas, can express the first-order translations of basic modal logic and of many description logics, along with many sentences that arise in databases. It has been shown that the syntax of GNFO is restrictive enough so that computational problems such as validity and satisfiability are still decidable. This suggests that, in spite of its expressive power, GNFO formulas are amenable to novel optimizations. In this paper we study the model theory of GNFO formulas. Our results include…
Order-invariant formulas access an ordering on a structure's universe, but the model relation is independent of the used ordering. Order invariance is frequently used for logic-based approaches in computer science. Order-invariant formulas capture unordered problems of complexity classes and they model the independence of the answer to a database query from low-level aspects of databases. We study the expressive power of order-invariant monadic second-order (MSO) and first-order (FO) logic on restricted classes of structures that admit certain forms of tree decompositions (not necessarily of b…
In 1969, Per Lindstrom proved his celebrated theorem characterising the first-order logic and established criteria for the first-order definability of formal theories for discrete structures. K. J. Barwise, S. Shelah, J. Vaananen and others extended Lindstrom's characterizability program to classes of infinitary logic systems, including a recent paper by M. Dzamonja and J. Vaananen on Karp's chain logic, which satisfies interpolation, undefinability of well-order, and is maximal in the class of logic systems with these properties. The novelty of the chain logic is in its new definition of sati…
We investigate the decidability of the definability problem for fragments of first order logic over finite words enriched with modular predicates. Our approach aims toward the most generic statements that we could achieve, which successfully covers the quantifier alternation hierarchy of first order logic and some of its fragments. We obtain that deciding this problem for each level of the alternation hierarchy of both first order logic and its two-variable fragment when equipped with all regular numerical predicates is not harder than deciding it for the corresponding level equipped with only…
The theory of addition in the domains of natural (N), integer (Z), rational (Q), real (R) and complex (C) numbers is decidable, so is the theory of multiplication in all those domains. By Godel's Incompleteness Theorem the theory of addition and multiplication is undecidable in the domains of N, Z and Q, though Tarski proved that this theory is decidable in the domains of R and C. The theory of multiplication and order (x,<) behaves differently in the above mentioned domains of numbers. By a theorem of Robinson, addition is definable by multiplication and order in the domain of natural numbers…
Modal inclusion logic is the extension of basic modal logic with inclusion atoms, and its semantics is defined on Kripke models with teams. A team of a Kripke model is just a subset of its domain. In this paper we give a complete characterisation for the expressive power of modal inclusion logic: a class of Kripke models with teams is definable in modal inclusion logic if and only if it is closed under k-bisimulation for some integer k, it is closed under unions, and it has the empty team property. We also prove that the same expressive power can be obtained by adding a single unary nonemptine…
